New Yoshi's Island announced for 3DS!

Are these any good? Not going to lie, not knowing anything about them they seem a bit shovelware-ish to me :P

You don't deserve to wear a Luigi hat. :P

It's not an amazing game, but it has a few unique aspects (and a neat asthetic) that makes it stand out from other RPGs. It's worth picking up. Point is, they've made a few good IPs the past few years but no one buys them. :(

These are the types of IPs I like to see from Nintendo. No one buys them, but they're refreshing ideas that haven't really been explored by Nintendo before. I'd like for them to continue that. That being said, I have a strong suspicion that Retro is working on a flagship new IP.

I have the top three games you listed in my collection, and yes, they commendable efforts by Nintendo. But ask yourself this, how much effort did it take to even bring those games over to the states? Nintendo wanted no part in it! Xenoblade is an excellent game, and I unduly forgot to mention it in my original post about Nintendo, but the company really dropped the ball in terms of getting the game in gamers' hands.

That's more of a NOA issue. And yeah, NOA pretty much sucks :/

@serplux: Let's see if I can find any of them for cheap :P

That's a whooooole 'nother discussion my friend. NoA is fairly horrible, but that's not what we're talking about.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (Fossil Fighters and The Last Story you can get for about $35, but lol Xenoblade).

Also, my previous remark only applied to Fossil Fighters. Xenoblade is amazing and The Last Story is pretty damn good too.

Since you've not addressed any of my points and simply moved the goal posts, you're the one stalling. You came into this thread and said 'Sony made new IPs this gen. What has Nintendo made?'. A list was provided, with games from 1st and 3rd parties, and then you decided most of them don't count because they don't feel like Nintendo games, without bothering to explain what in the hell that actually means.

I'll explain again what I had in mind... basically games that get the kind of resources, care and talent that titles like Mario Galaxy and Skyward Sword receive.

Anyway, it's 1:10 am here so I'm gonna hit the hay. We can continue the conversation tomorrow if you're truly interested.

Once again, I will ask, is the game in the OP a 'Nintendo' game?

Seems to be, but I don't know who is developing it (?)

I really didn't mean to start a Sony Vs. Nintendo argument when I posted my feelings toward the new Yoshi game...

In any case, I'm still waiting for a really mind-blowing Nintendo game on my 3DS that will give me the proper Galaxy or Twilight Princess experience on the go.

And if I want portable Link to the Past, Donkey Kong, or Yoshi's Island, I can always use my Supaboy :)

I was talking about any of the two Fossil Fighters games :P

But what if *gasp* LTTP2 and the new Yoshi's Island are different games?

aww yiss! The original Yoshi's Island is one of my all time favs. I never played the DS version, but I've heard it's not very good. This one will hopefully be like the original. Then I might buy a 3DS.

The characters and parts of the background kind of look like they're made of... frosting? Cool in a way... I guess 2D would have been better, but this does look good. I can tell that the background/foreground stuff is going to look great in 3D mode.

Fact is that Nintendo has recently refused to pour significant 1st party resources into a new IP, no? What are the exceptions? When was the last instance, besides Xenoblade*?

*Monolith Soft, but technically they are a 1st party team

I recorded a little bit of gameplay to try and get a comparison as close as I could

Growing up with Sega I never owned a SNES, but man Yoshi's Island is stll gorgeous. There is something very unappealing to me about this new style, I can't quite put my finger on it though.

Wow that screen i don't know where to start...
Just look at the tree for christ sake.. Someting heavily blurred it seems.. The grass has not the same style as the rest, as it has a line that makes it stand out on top of everything liek it has nothing to do there.

Oh and in that other gif, the way this same cloud pop up 3 times in a row hyper quick in the background.. really ? It's like it's not a professional job.

Actually, the more i think about it, the more it seems Nintendo just showed us a demo project..
Like you, I wished the graphics didn't look like ass. You elaborated your argument more than I do mine but I am tempted to regurgite my meal when I look at those shots. Your drawings made us more open to graphical styles many of us didn't consider suitable for the high-profile Nintendo franchises but we loved after we saw them Very frankly, the art direction for both Zelda and Yoshi titles pale in comparison. I cannot help but be disappointed.

The original Yoshi's Island skipped these type of pre-rendered shit sprites in favor of it's timeless style. So now they just do it anyways? This is ugly to the point where I probably won't touch it.

I didn't like it until I realised they were recreating the style from the intro to the SNES game. Then I liked it. It's clay.

man whoever is making the calls for these prerendered sprites for this and NSMB needs to be taken outside and put down. seriously its sad.

Adding black borders and making things less blurry would certainly make me like the style more. But I guess I need a 3d trailer on my 3DS to really get a good feel for it.

And it sure is windy in the background, look at those clouds go.

Looks like a few things clash in the art, but I think they were really focusing on making the platforms/enemies and stuff stand out from the background which is important for twitch platforming. Looking from that angle it's not so bad to me.

Two main problems I have is the inconsistency in design between the environment and the characters, as well as the lack of personality in the prerendered Yoshi. For example, in the SNES Yoshi little things like it's smile lend a more welcoming tone, whereas the prerendered Yoshi seems to have an indifferent look on its face. Am I the only one who sees this?

Yoshi's Island on SNES was one of the best game of the console.
Now, let's not forget that they released an another Yoshi's Island on DS... I don't think that I need to remind those who played it that it was a huge disappointment.
Wait and see.

You are trying to change my memories oO. I think Yoshi's Island DS is great and had a lot of fun with it. And this is not because my name is Yoshi, I was severely disappointed by Yoshi's Story (though I love its aesthetics).

Though I like the new version, I notice something that seems off...

In the SNES version, the "top layer" of the flowers travels at a different speed than the "main layer" that's the one with actual gameplay. This give us a false sense of depth that is pretty much appreciated. (I don't know you guys, I love that)

In the 3DS version both layers move at the same speed. This flattens the image and takes away the depth. Though it will then come from the 3D on, I believe the effect will be more convincent with the SNES pacing.

EDIT: Also, they should add a black borderline on some things. That flower was totally invisible the first three times I saw that gif.

Nice comparison... I agree with you on this. I also do not like how the distant background is out of focus in the new version...

The top layer should still move at a slightly faster speed as it would sell the idea it is much closer to the screen better. See Rayman Origins for how modern 2D graphics should be approached (the only game which really reminded me of Disney's old multi-plane camera technology... this game does quite a lot with horizontal and vertical scrolling, awesome tech and use of such tech...).

I'm sure this will get a polishing before release.

Looking at some screens of Mario & Luigi Dream Team, they've polished up the visuals in that one. Doesn't look as off as it did in some of the screens they showed before.
(Mainly the combat scenes)

i don't know how to even stop the cycle. Their strategy of game releases is absolutely disgusting at this point, they announce a new fucking Mario franchise whore game every other hour, but then there's always those buzz word Mario or Zelda games that I just will get anyway, thus reinforcing the cycle.

I wish Nintendo would just break the cycle of awfulness so that people like me without self-control wouldn't have to have all this self-loathing over supporting these awful practices.

Sorry, I've never read your full stance. I get Yoshi games as played out, since he had Game Boy Advance and DS games. Luigi's been alone unless you count Mario And Luigi R.P.G., though.

Is it just the principle of them throwing out, like, Wario and Donkey Kong as Mario proxies for sales purposes, or do you think that tying things to Nintendo's Official Super Mario Rules stunts gameplay experimentation?

Ah, those were the times... back in the day when new Mario titles and new Nintendo ideas meant 'the complete package' and not 'hey guys you can choose good gameplay or good visuals! I don't know why we're making you choose, but you gotta!'

Do you think they're under the impression that they're good? I think they more resemble cheaply animated 3-d childrens television programs around the world, and they think that gets kids to buy them. I trust Nintendo to know what good aesthetics are.

Who's making this? The team behind Yoshi's Universal Gravitation and Yoshi's Island DS or what is left of them at Arzest or Marvelous AQL?

I don't think it necessarily stunts gameplay experimentation altogether for Nintendo, actually. For Nintendo, it's pretty much the way they experiment because like 2/3 of what they release these days is connected to one of their established franchises. I do believe that because fans have certain expectations for these types of games, they might not be able to experiment as much as they could with just a new concept.

For me, it's more like what I lose in my enjoyment of a total package when I take 'new characters, new worlds, new themes' out of the equation. For me, part of the appeal of games is exploring genuinely new worlds and characters, and when you remove that aspect from a game it does diminish my attraction over time. It doesn't happen overnight, of course... if I love a game, I might play many sequels before I get to the point where I get sick of the universe. But of course with something like Mario, I've played probably over fifty Mario games at this point or something insane like that (I'd actually be curious to try to count lol), so it has reached that point for a while.

If we look at the comparison GIFs of Yoshi Island original and this new one, we can already see the similarities between the worlds and themes of the old one (albeit with an inferior style), and that's kind of why it's a little annoying. 'Cause I think I would love these games all the more if they just had a new set of characters and worlds, since for me that's a big part of why I buy games.

I probably prefer the old style, but I honestly think that it's looking lovely, absolutely not bland or average, especially lookint at the standadized style of today's industry

Probably, if it's the same team it's probably Arzest since the ones that stayed with Marvelous AQL were just a few of the people working on The Last Story.

While Arzest continues to contract work for Nintendo, the critical reception of the Yoshi series has dropped in the old Artoon hands. If EAD is producing this one especially, I don't think the main developer is Arzest.

Could even be NST. Probably not EAD. But still a possibility.

Excluding new spin-offs to exisitng franchises, since 2004:

Fossil Hunters
Soma Bringer
ASH
The Last Story
Pandora's Tower
Wii Sports
Wii Fit
Wii Music
Wii Play
Wii Party
Dillion's Rolling Western
Sakura Samurai
Crashmo
Xenoblade
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Nintendogs
Brain Training
Endless Ocean
Kiki Trick
Line Attack Heroes
Rock N Roll Climber
Fluidity
Another Code
Electro Plankton
Ouendan
Magnetica
Hotel Dusk
Style Savvy
Sing Party
The Wonderful 101
Harmo Knight

But what if those aren't the IPs he's interested in. Surely the risk of putting out IPs that don't appeal to me, aren't worth recognizing.

new yoshi looks like ass. the boots are the worst in the way they animate and look especially bad on slopes.

looks like they're using pre-rendered sprites for most of the visuals

man whoever is making the calls for these prerendered sprites for this and NSMB needs to be taken outside and put down. seriously its sad.

It's not the end of the world for me, but I agree that this looks a little off. Prerendered was the cool thing back in the SNES/N64 days, but with the power of today's systems it's just not needed for great character models.

Didn't catch who was developing this, but I do hope the level design is almost as good as the original Super Mario World 2. The original was just incredible.

The critical reception of the Yoshi games did not stop Nintendo from working with the same team at Artoon. They were still working together on the critically panned FlingSmash, so I guess they just don't care too much about that.
From a time perspective, Arzest would make sense too. They were founded in 2010 and have 50 employees now. However, despite some minigames for Wii Play Motion, additions to the StreetPass Mii Plaza, and character designs for The Time Travelers and some Android RPG, they haven't done anything.

How many teams does NST have now? One team is working on yet another Mario vs DK title, another team is busy with development/Unity tools.

There are some things to consider. Both Yohi and Zelda seem to be in a similar development cycle and are being developed under the same philosophy. Kind of like the New Play Control line. Just odd one would be in-house and the other outhouse. EAD has never worked with Artoon / Arzest either. Only SPD has. Maybe it is EAD. Maybe it's EAD and Arzest or the old SPD and Arzest.

NST definitely has something else. They have too many designers unaccounted for.
