Next Assassin's Creed Location and Time Period

Am I the only one that doesn't like the Wild West idea? I mean think of RDR... One big town with some little towns but there's nothing between. It's desert. The whole point of AC is the running across buildings and hiding in crowds. I mean AC3 was boring and had tons of trees to run on. So I assume a Wild West AC would be like AC3 without trees and with sand and different clothing.

I agree, a Wild West Assassin's Creed just doesn't make sense. Gotta have tight cities to climb around on. That's why China and Japan are an inevitability.

And if they wanted to throw in Naval stuff in there too they can.. Not sure how the naval fighting would work. And could even throw in the mongol invasion

Feudal Japan is the clear winner for me. Love the setting and the art would be fantastic.
Kind of a bummer that Osiris/Egypt is probably on deck, but Japan can't be that far off.

Another open world game please. Sailing the high seas and pillaging from whatever ships I decided to take on was a breath of fresh air and gave me that Sid Meier's Pirates feeling for the next generation.

Wouldn't mind that AC setup splitting off to become a pirating franchise...

They basically said in AC4 that Abstergo Ent. won't be picking any setting in 20th century because adding driving etc to Animus code is difficult and can't keep the user synchronized while driving or moving really fast :p

Next year is probably ACIV: B
Year after is Osiris ACV
After that maybe Osiris spinoffs
Then new location

ACIV is already ACIII:B with a new character. Actually apparently there are some hints the game was supposed to be called AC Golden Age originally. So I don't think there will be a AC4:B, I hope.

I kind of feel like whatever they do now will be a step back. After having a massive ocean to sail around on a pirate ship looting, and pilaging how do you go back to just climbing a bunch of boring buildings?

Ill be really curious to see how they try to top IV, because if they bring it forward to risk turning it into a watered down GTA period piece, if they take it further back again they are going to have to find a way to top the naval gameplay.

last i heard there were two AC games in dev and being readied for release next year. one is the mainline game and other is a xbla/psn title.

The future is really the only way I could see Ubi outdoing IV. They did pirates/pirate ships. Now its time for some spaceships.

Japan is a cool idea, but again due to the limited nature of what they would be able to allow within context of the period it would likely feel like a downgrade from IV imo.

Got-damn that looks awesome. Halo 4 Forerunners?

Anyway, Samurais are better than ninjas. Ninjas have been so overused and are generic like zombies. Do you want a zombie Assassin's Creed? NO! So no ninjas. Fuck those guys.

But Japan would be awesome. The buildings.. Ninjas.. Samurai... Ronins.. And Seriously they could make the landscape look so amazing. I'm thinking the game Tenchu mixed with AC on a grander scale and basically being better LOL
My thoughts exactly. I'm actually quite surprised to see so many in favour of a Wild West setting. RDR is my favourite game of all time and I would kill for another good cowboy game, but wasn't a major complaint of AC3 the lack of buildings/structures to climb? That won't work out too well for the Wild West either. I'm not rejecting the idea entirely but I'm interested in hearing you guys' thoughts on how a Wild West AC would work.

Also don't really understand why people think the Feudal Japan setting is overdone. Yeah we get plenty of Musou type games, ninja action games, strategic games and such, but has there been a well done open world Feudal Japan game with the kind of scope like AC and RDR? I can't think of any except Yakuza Kenzan and Ishin, but you know those two are never going to make it to the West. Maybe Way of the Samurai, but that series isn't exactly known for its high level of polish. Where are the other open world Feudal Japan games? Because I sure would love to play them.

Totally disagree. Feudal Japan would allow them to ratchet up the tension and drama way past anything they've done so far. AC2 and Brotherhood had similar potential, but they fumbled it in favor of too much focus on the TERRIBLE future storylines (plus Ezio started out as more of a lovable goof before taking his punches), but Shogunate feuds, ninja, samurai, ronin, the scenery, the politics, the katana duels in flower fields, the return of horses, etc. etc. GIMME ALL DAT

Im all for Samurai, but i think Ubisoft painted themselves into a corner, because what can they do in Japan that would match, or be better then the Naval gameplay offered up by the Caribbean setting of IV? We going to go back to horses now?

I would rather Yakuza be localized to be honest.

I'd prefer London in the Victorian Era. Casually strolling through the fog, wearing a cool black suit and a top hat, and a walking cane which is a disguised sword etc.

The sailing in Black Flag was so dumbed down from 3 that would like to go back to horses. Also the only way any other Assassin's creed game will work is if they go back ti Ass2 combat system.

Seeing as it's impossible to make a decent Tenchu game these days, they should set it in Japan just so I can get that rooftop-running ninja vibe.

Ehh say what you want about it, but the navel gameplay is a big part of what got allot interested in IV, and it seems that most people are really enjoying it. Having a big massive ocean to sail around it, discovering different islands, and treasures/treasure maps, exploring mayan ruins, boarding enemy ships, taking on forts during a hurricane. This is all stuff that a setting like fedual japan would not be able to match.

If they ended up going back to just riding horses, and climbing around big old buildings I probably would go back to not caring again.

I would love to see it set during 7th/8th century Europe, with the tensions between the Carolingian Christian west and the Vikings. You could play a Viking, although hopefully ubi don't paint the Vikings as bloodthirsty nutters, perhaps even make Charlemagne and his nobles the "bad" guys.

Ancient china, Silk Road peak era, would also be interesting. But it needs to be set in chang'an

Assassin's Creed isn't a naval game. I'll grant that it's a tonne of fun in AC4 but I'd rather have them improve the melee combat system, not allow guns to be anything other than a support weapon and most importantly of all focus on getting the mainline story right (it was meh in 4). It's time to move on. Assassin's Creed 2 was fun because it had a great story and it's combat balance was good. I want them to go back to that.

The best part of Assassin's Creed, through all the weird free running hiccups, all the dumb combat simplification, and all the ridiculous "side content" busywork, has been the assassination, chase, and "large melee combat" missions. All of that is not only still possible in Japan, but made better by an atmosphere and landscape 1000000% fit for all those missions. Sailing is okay in Black Flag, but if they retool gameplay to actually make stealth stealthy, make combat faster and more deadly, and make all the systems deeper, I feel safe in saying people will forget about sailing.

And yes we going back to horses. Horses are great and I miss horseback assassinations. And I want to see the power of next gen with dozens of samurai riding into battle carrying their flags and weapons of war.

I just want something drastically different. Asia seems to fit the bill, but I'm not biased towards one direction or another as long as it's different.

Would love to see a well executed Japanese/Asian setting but just picturing the dreaded accents is making me cringe. Nothing wrong with subs though, or if they pull a "The Last Samurai" where the MC is english speaking and a few other cast members happen to speak english as well!

I never said it was a naval game, all I said was that they will need to find something that will be a match for IVs Naval aspect to ensure that the next game does not feel like its going backwards.

I want victorian London. The reason ass creeds have not been as good is due to the lack of real cities that are stuffed full with buildings. 4 was decent because it was pirates and the sea play.

Let me hunt down ol Jack the Ripper.

I really hope they one day go the Adam & Eve story that they had video for in 2 and briefly mentioned in 4.

But the way the story is moving in 4, we might just end up with some sort of reboot.

I'd like to see an AC in the same time period (or close to it) as the first AC, but in England/France. London depicted like this:

Posted before, but I think an AC in the Netherlands in the 'golden century' could be the tits:

- cities like Amsterdam, Haarlem, Alkmaar, Utrecht & Leiden were all booming and very close to each other.
- A'dam was one of the most multicultural trade centres of the world. VOC was founded as the first multinational corporation with shareholders.
- Protestants from Belgium and Germany were pouring in.
- Windmills were suddenly erected everywhere as cheap sources of energy, starting up a network of industrialized areas with immense output.
- Netherlands had a monopoly on trade with Japan.
- There were a shitload of scientists/philosophers/painters doing groundbreaking work (Grotius, Descartes, Huygens, Spinoza, van Leeuwenhoek, Hals, Rembrandt, Bol, Vermeer, Potter, etc) which could function as interesting characters around the protagonist.

Stuff looked freaking awesome:

If it were up to me:

1) One last cross-gen AC (while new consoles grow) set in Asia. Back to melee and back to basics, setting new strong foundations:

-Improve free-running: one button for climbing, a different one for running. While running you jump over and around stuff, while climbing you jump on top of it or grab to it.

-Improve stealth: Introduce a light/shadow system, focus on night stealth missions.

-Improve combat: Focus on shorter animations with deadlier combat both for the player and enemies. Reduce janky animations.

Once everything works, go back to europe and do the french revolution, "next gen" only.

A post-game quest in Assassin's Creed III hinted rather strongly that a French Revolution game was in the cards. Even after playing and loving AC IV, I'm still kind of bummed that game doesn't exist yet.

Ancient Egypt sounds interesting, from what's been teased. Lots of potential there.

They basically said in AC4 that Abstergo Ent. won't be picking any setting in 20th century because adding driving etc to Animus code is difficult and can't keep the user synchronized while driving or moving really fast :p.

Yeh, that quote made me laugh. Abstergo says they'd be
"hampered by the semi-catatonic state most people enter when driving for medium and long periods of time – and this makes data retrieval somewhat more difficult.”"

Not like...say...driving a pirate ship over the sea for large periods of time at all then? :-P

I do think it's quite neat that they basically answered the question about modern day AC within the fiction of the game itself though. There's quite a few nice touches to AC4 with how they can riff off the whole Abstergo mechanic. I liked it.

If it's to be an Asian setting, I'd like it to be Ancient China. It's a setting that's rarely done in video games. You can almost say the Japanese setting has been done to death these days.

That was the all point of Desilet's 1666 Amsterdam.
Too bad we will never see that game.

But for AC, I remember they said that feodal japan was a really bad idea. French Revolution is more likely, wait for the annual Ubisoft February leak :-)
