Next Level Games has been working on "top secret project" since October

Like what? The only thing that seemed "cheap" to me about Charged was the opposing AI on higher difficulty levels. I thought the goalie ball-blocking minigame was pretty excellent, and would work great with the Gamepad.
Agreed, the point-and-block bit for the goalie was GREAT. As for player power-ups, I don't recall them being "cheap." A supersized Luigi was tough to deal with sometimes, but other than that, everything seemed manageable.

I hope a third Strikers does what Charged did and brings back virtually all of the previous games' stadiums. The arenas are half the fun!

Also, game had CRAZY atmosphere. In the world of Mario Sports, you have sugar-coated Camelot games... and then you have Strikers. Love the sheer intensity, the rolling thunder, the dark clouds, driving rain and irradiated crystals!

Yeah, when I said cheapness, I was on about the highest difficulty. The AI reacted faster that it was humanly possible to do. The difficulty level down from it was all too easy to win after you understood the controls and tactics. I used to play the first Strikers on the highest difficulty, and games would never be certain that I'd win. Being a single goal up or down was a real knife edge feeling, just like real footy.

The first game was less chaotic, and more focused on football. The sequel has more focus on power-ups, special moves, and environmental events on the various pitches. I did love the charged shot mini game, and the selection of captains and team mates with different abilities was a nice addition too.

I see. I never played the first one. Personally I loved the mechanic of checking guys and giving them powerups for it. I could see the "super" shots being less important but overall I love that it's unabashedly a fun arcade-style game.

well, it was pretty cheap when people were only beaming themself into the goals with koopas and boos online. That is something that can be fixed.

And yeah, please be strikers U

They can take the boos and koopa teleporting away as long as I can keep my Toad-jumping-over-the-goalie tactic :P

YES. I absolutely loved how the characters were portrayed. I always laughed as they fell out of the sky to start a match.

And Charged has the absolute best representation of Waluigi that has ever been done. I want that Waluigi in his own game.

You could teleport goals with Boo and Dry Bones iirc. It wasn't unstoppable though, and once you are aware of it its not too hard to start countering it. I think it was probably intentional since its not exactly easy to pull off, particularly with Boo. A lot of the characters had easy goal tactics though, Toad for example, and Hammer Bro had his Hammer that really fucked shit up. It's just about knowing how to play your characters really.

Yeah once I learned about it I rarely got burned with it online. Actually, the most fun matches I had were against guys who were ONLY good at that, and once you stopped that tactic, you could beat them like 15-0.

1. Crush every teleport attempt
2. Make them watch every replay the whole way through.
3. Wait for disconnect.
...
4. Profit!

Works 99% of the time.

I still pop a MASSIVE BONER when Luigi free falls into the stadium to his Spanish guitar theme tune. I love that shit.

The first game still had charge up power shots, but not the goalie mini game. You just struck a single, high powered shot that was likely to score.

hopefully the next Strikers games will be like MK7. Keep all of the improvement that the various sequel have introduced, but tone down a lot of the random cheapness and frustration. Then it would be perfect.

Anything for Wii U, please :)

I see. I never played the first one.

Watch this. You can see how the game is far more like an arcade football game than the OTT sequel. Both have their place, but I prefer the actual football in the original.

In fact, I find the only arcade footy game that compares to Mario Strikers is the first Super Sidekicks on the NeoGeo. Likewise, each Super Sidekick sequel moved away from the frantic, pure, arcade football of the original (but in this case, moved toward realism than chaos).

Hmm, I see where you're coming from, but I just can't agree. What it looks like here is that you don't really have much of a disincentive to smash other players, whereas in Charged the fact that you were giving the other team an item made it a much more interesting choice. Also the samey partner characters definitely is less interesting, but it's hard to have meaningful additional teammates without giving them special abilities like there were in Charged.

I always felt like high-level play in Strikers Charged came back to mastering the fundamental play as opposed to the gimmicks, though. I definitely think it could be refined but I enjoyed managing the chaos of it all. I wouldn't mind finding a happy medium between the two though.

Of course, special options for no items and things should be easily doable.

My God, what an amazing game!

I remember the first time I saw this on demo at a GameStop, my friends and I sat at the station for over an hour. Once the clerk was like "Dudes, we're closing," we figured we pretty much HAD to buy the game at that point; then we grabbed a twelve of Shiner Bock and played it until like three in the morning.

I'm with you 100%, the pure arcade action of the original can't be beaten!

If they can replicate that in a Wii U game with a little more content (maybe a Sakurai style achievement grid) would make it a DAY ONE buy for me forever.

Seems like LM2 is exploding in Japan, might become one of the highest selling western developed games ever.

Jumping the gun a litte? That was better kept in the MC thread where it's context was more likely to be understood. Hope that Luigi's Mansion does well, but posting anecdotal remarks out of context (i.e. it's one of a few anecdotes from the MC threads, including one saying that there are lots of LM2 on the shelves, presumably not moving) may do more harm (e.g. setting expectations unreasonably high) than good.

I think everyone should bare in mind that any impressions are from the first day of sale, on a public holiday in the middle of the week and wait until next week.

I'd love a portable Strikers.
In the event of a Strikers 3DS, I hope they retain the following features from LM2:

- Single-card download play for the FULL multiplayer mode
- Local players can team up and join others online

That would be perfect. And they could even have the goalkeeper minigame on the 3DS -- the goalie would be prompted to pull out their stylus and block the shots on the touchscreen, or maybe use the system's gyro function to aim a pair of hands. :)

EDIT: Oooo Mario Sunshine 2. :O

I would lose my ever-loving shit if they were developing Sunshine 2. Far more than anything short of a new Metroid.
It's fun to imagine what a Super Mario Sunshine 2 could be like.

Hopefully they'd increase the level variety like they did with LM2 and the five mansions.

Imagine:

+ Tropical resort town
+ Ski resort town
+ Desert casino town

And so on. And maybe a Sunshine 2 could expand upon FLUDD with like, I don't know, snow-blowers and lasers and shit.

As long as it has that cohesive, interconnected feel Sunshine had. Lamented at the time, I've come to appreciate Sunshine's "one world" vision.

Don't you do this to me.

I can't handle thinking about this game and it then never happening.

I think NLS could do wonders with Sunshine 2. In fact I bet they could put a creative twist on the "sunshine" aspect as well, possibly tying day/night cycles to some gameplay element. In my opinion this is the perfect 2014 title for the 3DS. I big epic 3D Mario.

So this is pretty much a confirmation that it's a Wii U game without an official confirmation.

Or 3DS. I mean, they mention Nintendo, but not specifically Wii U.

With how well Luigi's Mansion 2 turned out (based on the reviews so far, at least), I'd really like to see them do Sunshine 2 on 3DS. It would be amazing for all possible reasons, and a good fit for the studio that revived Luigi's Mansion. That said, do you guys think Nintendo would outsource a main series Mario? I can't see this happening at all. On top of that, it's a bit early for a main series Mario. We'll have a Wii U Mario this or the next year, and they just can't release two 3D Mario games in a sort time.

I hope for Punch-Out!! U! Strikers isn't that grand. Actually, I wish there was a Sports Mix 2 (such an underrated game!) that contained Strikers, much like it had Hoops. I've never played Sluggers, is that worth being a separate game? I know Tennis and Golf have a big fanbase.

This gameplay mechanic is in the first game too. Hit another player when they don't have possession, and you give them an item.

I'd fucking kill for Sunshine 2, preferably for Wii U, but having another 3D Mario would also fucking rock, UGH CHOICES!!!

I like my 3D Mario to be 60fps, so would much prefer a Wii U version. Sunshine 2 would be the absolute tits though.

Oh, weird... I didn't see it in the video. Might be a UI thing. Or was it turned off? I admit I skimmed it after the first couple minutes. Maybe I'm blind XD

If Nintendo makes Sunshine 2 I'm never buying one of their systems again. Wind Waker 2 (Phantom Hourglass) was already too much, can't see another mediocre GC game being continued.

only half serious.

You guys thinking anybody other then Nintendo are making a 3D Mario (Mario Sunshine 2.) for their Flagship System are out if your minds.

I hope the half that wasn't serious was the part where you called Wind Waker mediocre.

I would agree with you if Nintendo wasn't in dire need of more games for their systems. And the more Mario the better, in Nintendo's eyes at least.
