from the new tv contracts with the NFL:

In addition to some interactive services, DirecTV will institute a separate "Red Zone" channel devoted to taking viewers from game to game when a team is inside an opponent's 20-yard line and poised to score.

that's pretty cool

Yeah that's a natural extension of the status screens that they have for like 2-3 of the game channels. For the first few game channels currently you get the game at almost full screen and a blue bar that runs down the side and bottom of the screen. It gives you all the current scores and the channel that the game is on... when either team gets in the redzone that particular box turns red.

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!
oh i know, i have sunday ticket =p

never use those channels though, since i like having the game in full screen.

...Jesus christ, how does Pete Prisco write for NFL.com?

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/7870993

The Steelers will lose, yes. But Ben Roethlisberger is NOT going to have a rookie game. He's not going to look like Kyle Boller has since he took his first snap. He's not going to resemble Peyton Manning in his first year, throwing half the balls to the guys wearing something other than a horseshoe on their helmets. He isn't going to look like Drew Brees has until this year, with everybody in the league chanting for his head.

He will eventually look like McNabb did this weekend, like Culpepper does without Moss. He will have bad games, but they won't be because he's a rookie. And if you can't see that at this point, you haven't seen him play. And you can't be taken seriously writing about the NFL if you haven't seen him play.

On top of that, the Rams weren't as good as we thought? If you thought the Rams were going to play as well as they did last year, you've got some serious problems. The Rams were the most predictable fall this season.

The Chargers are a top 6 team right now. They are playing better than any of the three loss teams on both sides of the ball, and to put them that low would be laughable if this guy weren't so clueless all around.

Picks ahoy.

Sunday

Tampa Bay @ Atlanta 1 PM FOX
Chicago @ Tennessee 1 PM FOX
Seattle @ St. Louis 1 PM FOX
Baltimore @ New York jets 1 PM FOX
Kansas City @ New Orleans 1 PM CBS (Why am I picking New Orleans the week after Aaron Brooks made people forget about Jake Plummer's left handed touchdown throw to a fellow on the opposing team? Well, he can't possibly do anyhting stupider than throw it at Wayne Gandy, who is for some reason five yards behind the QB...right? Anyway, the Chiefs, the "How the fuck are they only three point favorites?" team of the week, lost to the Bucs. Party's over)
Detroit @ Jacksonville 1 PM CBS
Houston @ Indianapolis 1 PM CBS
Pittsburgh @ Cleveland 1 PM CBS
Minnesota @ Green Bay
NY Giants @ Arizona
Cincinnatti @ Washington 4:05 PM CBS
Carolina @ San Francisco 4:05 PM FOX(I've picked far too many road teams, that's the deciding factor. I think I see a tie here)

Shit I don't even know I'm horrible at picking :p I only picked ATL cause they're at home. Seriously, ATL could go 3-5 and still win the NFC South :(

the Ravens look like they are starting to gel at the right time, and Jamal Lewis is back... I think they can make the playoffs through the wild card. I also think Ed Reed will have at least 2 picks this sunday...

You'll get a glimpse of what a mediocre qb can do for a team.

A glimpse? Hell I get that every week right here with my own team. ;)

Eminem

goddamit, Griese!
from ESPN's poll:

1) Who is the midseason MVP?

31.7% Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger

23.9% Colts QB Peyton Manning

17.3% Chargers QB Drew Brees

7.0% Eagles WR Terrell Owens

6.6% Giants RB Tiki Barber

5.1% Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper

4.4% Patriots QB Tom Brady

3.9% Eagles QB Donovan McNabb

HOW can people be picking Ben over Peyton? What Ben's done has never been done before...it's unreal. However, he has an excellent defense to back him up. He's shown great poise and control on the field...but his stats aren't all that great. I do think the Steelers could have easily won the games against the Pats and Iggles without him. Again, not putting him down...he's a fucking stud, no doubt.

My case for Manning is this... everyone knows his stats. Ridiculous. 120 QB rating through 8 games. 26TDs, 4 INTS? whaaaaa

But, just imagine the Colts without Manning. One of the worst 5 times in the entire NFL.

With Manning, however(according to another ESPN poll):
After the Steelers, Patriots, and Eagles, which is the 4th best team in the NFL?

Broncos: 8.9%
Chargers: 22.3%
Colts 52.7%
Falcons: 6.6%
Vikings: 9.2%

Total Votes: 115,504

Manning's gotta be the MVP so far this year, imo.

Remind me again, what were the Steelers doing before Big Ben (aka the NFL Messiah)? Oh yeah that is right, they were a mediocre team that most predicted to struggle to get to .500. The Steelers have a great team around Ben, but they were not going to do anything with Maddox behind them. Ben isn't doing everything, but if you were going to pick the person most responsible for the Steelers resurgence, it has to be Big Ben. Hell, even the defense has improved as a result of having a balanced offense. It allows them to have a attacking mentality that they didn't have before.

Not that I would have complained if they had picked Manning, he is definitely the 2nd best QB in the NFL (after Ben ;)),
