After thinking about it some, I don't think the Canucks will look for anything other than a right handed defenseman for depth on the blueline. I took a look at our roster and we're pretty much set on what we need for a deep playoff run. The biggest question I think going in, is what kind of forward lines we're looking to use going in.
For most of the season so far, the Canucks have been rolling three scoring lines and a defensive-minded 4th line. Going into the playoffs, they can follow that same idea, or they can fall back into a traditional two scoring line system.
When everyone is healthy, we've got 9 top six forwards in Daniel, Henrik, Burrows, Booth, Kesler, Higgins, Raymond, Hodgson and Hansen.
9 bottom six forwards in Lapierre, Malhotra, Weise, Bitz, Reinprecht, Duco Volpatti and Ebbet (the latter two will likely be back for the playoffs). Also I think Bitz will be on the playoff roster for sure because of his ability to play with the twins and interchange with Burrows when the twins start facing some abuse.
Moen would be nice, and we COULD overpay to get him, but looking at our inventory of bottom six players, we don't actually need him. People keep forgetting that Reinprecht is in the system and has already been confirmed by Gillis to be part of the playoff plans. He's basically what we want from Moen but free since we already have him.
On defense, we're a bit shorter on depth. We've got 9 NHL defensemen for the playoff with Hamhuis, Bieksa, Edler, Salo, Ballard, Rome, Tanev, Alberts and Sulzer. Considering how well they play together, I can see Ballard and Tanev moving up as a 2nd defense pairing without too much problem. We could try and snatch another top 4 d-man, but that'd be really expensive and I don't want to lose top three round pick in this year's draft.
Raymond's the biggest tradebait here, but considering how much our top six suffered through injuries last season, I think we need all the top six forwards we can get to ensure that we burn through them all up as quickly as we did last season.
