NicoNico App launches on the Switch this week in Japan

I'm also curious to find out what happened, maybe we will find out sometime.

Same here! I seem to recall seeing a theory (or rumor, can't remember) that Nintendo was just really selective about who had access to dev kits. I wouldn't be surprised if they only focused on getting devs on-board first and made services like Netflix/Hulu wait until after launch. No idea how long it takes those folks to get something up and running once they do have the hardware.

App has been launched

Interesting... This is the first Switch title that uses your Nintendo Account natively for an external service

You can login to the website with your NNID too.

Also this is hilarious. Why do they have a Japanese dub of a full children's movie on here?
Gonna watch it anyway

Anyone have any tips for using the app?

Any way to change the language text?

It's a trip seeing some of the first videos I recognize while browsing are Etika reaction videos from E3 2017 and Cinemassacre's Shin Godzilla review with subtitles. lol

Are there some videos you cant access on Switch version of NicoNico or blocked off behind paywall or something. Seems like Switch cant play some of the videos, but dont understand Japanese to do anything about it and there in lies the problem lol

It's a Japanese video service, it does not currently have translated text, and I expect it probably never will.

NicoNico Premium costs 540yen a month, it is mostly used for anime simulcasts.

i will never understand who had the idea to put the worst part of every stream over the only interesting part of a stream (the stream itself)

or how people went along with it

imagining watching agdq with twitch chat all over the screen makes me physically ill

thank god niconico never caught on outside japan

Other streaming services (outside of Japan) have that option as well. So what are you talking about?

How do people use niconico? Do users not really care about the video itself? It seems like it'd be super distracting to watch anything with walls of text comments scrolling across the image.

We are pretty much used to it. Variety show constantly have text popping up in 10 different fonts and 20 different colors moving in different directions with audience and guest reaction windows/bubbles in the corners.

So the Niconico app is really good. Makes me hate the YouTube app on every console even more than I already did.

Why? I'm pretty happy with the youtube app on say the PS4. I wish it was faster and less laggy, but otherwise its alright. For that reason I tend to use the ShieldTV version as its much snappier.

I am a bit surprised by this announcement given Nintendos problematic relationship with game streaming. But I guess with a shareholding in niconico that gives them some influence.

YouTube app feels unfriendly, and like you said, laggy. Niconico app is super snappy and quick, touch screen can be used (unlike YT Wii U app). The UI is clean, simple and quick to navigate. It just feels like a step up from whatever YouTube is doing with their apps.

Also man, I have not logged into Niconico in a long time lol. So many old videos from 2008 in my favorites lists.

I was mainly using the Apple TV YouTube App before trying it out on PS4. Apple version was laggy and sluggish but the PS4 version is near perfect, runs smooth without problems.

Is there a guide to how to download stuff off another region's eshop?

create a second user account on your switch, pick Japan for a region, create a Japanese eShop account with one of your backup email addresses. then when you go to the eShop, pick that user account and presto, you're in the Japanese eShop. you can add eShop points if you want to buy Japanese games, but free apps and demos don't require anything of the sort.

The app is really good, the stream is smooth.
Currently watching Ariana Grande music video on my Switch :D
You can set video quality inside the gear icon, the one before the last option, pick the 1st one for FHD and the last one for LQ (left to right)

Edit:
This option is for profanity filter (pick the right one for unrestricted). The video quality is auto, based on battery and the connection.

This is good to know. Was kinda fumbling around looking for streams and quality toggle. Thanks!

It's the gear in overlay during the video playback not in the app home screen.
Surprisingly the Switch screen is really good when I'm watching HD videos. The viewing angle is top notch, like a retina screen lol

was able to find some english content which was nice. So close to being useable as an english speaker.

Sort of annoyed though that switch doesn't separate 'apps' from 'games' on the home screen. Gonna get annoying even just 6 months from now I already own too many games.

I really do hope that we see Youtube or Netflix as one of the first Apps on the Switch in the West. Would be nice to have those available so that you can have those experiences with you on the go as long as you connect to a Wifi.

Thanks and done. App is cool but the video quality seems sub HD. I don't know what to do about that.

Nii!

That's very easy to fix, when watching a video, pull up the playback settings in video by pressing y and then selecting the gear and turn 低画質優先 at the very bottom to OFF.

Bumping this thread because I somehow completely missed the news the first time around and randomly found out about it by looking at a GAFfer's play history on my playlist.

Anyway, I've been using it for the last couple nights, watching some videos in bed, and it's awesome. I found this Japanese guy who, among other things, streams AM2R (yes, that one). Nice voice, pretty relaxed tone. Not gimmicky or over the top. Nice way to practice your Japanese too. He kept praising the Western guy who made the game for all the care and attention to detail, haha. And his video capture software must be pretty good, because the image looked so crisp it felt like I was ingame. Made me jones for Virtual Console even more. If you're interested, his channel is まんとる (or まんとるさん, I forget), but you can probably find the videos by just looking up AM2R anyway. It's an 18-parter, and I doubt there are many videos of that game on Niconico, on account of it being a Metroid fan game made in the West. The guy didn't even know there were so many fan game of Metroid and he's never played the Prime games despite being a huge fan of the series apparently.

Speaking of, any Japanese video game channels you would recommend on Niconico? Either for gameplay with commentary, gaming news, or even game analysis. I already know about the 1UP-mushroom challenge in Mario 64 btw.

NicoNicoDouga hot tip: Search for Gachimuchi. It's their most popular meme.

No joke: when I opened the app for the first time, the first video my eyes fell on in the "recommended" list was a 10-minute-long compilation/history of Gachimuchi. Which I found simultaneously disturbing and reassuring: Nintendo definitely isn't monitoring or restricting video content in any way on this app. That's great.

Recently, I've been searching for and watching users who use Voiceroids for commentary, and I particularly enjoy the back-and-forth banter of those who use the Kotonoha sisters. JACK (Shougun) has a fun PUBG playlist, and ブレイクビー doing Kirby's Dream Course.

Thanks for the recommandations, much appreciated.

Unfortunately, I have a few issues with this type of videos that make them unwatchable for me:
1) Not too keen on the artificial Vocaloid voice. I'd rather listen to natural Japanese spoken by an actual person
2) Don't like the whole "multiple fictional characters interacting" thing. Don't really see the point. Though really, my main gripe about this is...
3) Anime waifus. Don't like the designs, and if I'm honest, I don't like anime-type female voices. They all sound samey, too high-pitched/cutesy/ぶりっ子 for my tastes. Besides, as a male learner of Japanese, I'd rather listen to male speakers if I can help it.

Here's the AM2R playthrough I was talking about by the way: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm31638611

Anyone got any other recommendations?

Watched some Nostalgia Critic, Joueur du Grenier and AVGN videos... on NicoNico (with Japanese subtitiles) and it seems that they're quite popular in Japan (especially when the NC does a cameo with Joueur du Grenier) ^^.

The jokes seems to have been well translated, regarding all the "wwwwwwwww".

You weren't kidding. I normally don't watch Joueur du Grenier (a.k.a. the French AVGN), but I watched the Ultraman episode out of curiosity. Seeing all those Japanese comments flying over the screen on a JDG video is kind of a surreal experience, though weirdly entertaining if you can read the language. Niconico-type comments are such a different experience too. It really feels like you're part of an audience watching the thing live. Obviously this wouldn't work in the US and maybe even in many EU countries, as comments would just devolve into spam, bigotry and stupidity. Gotta love the Japanese mentality on this one.

Yeah, just find a rare niconico video that's been linked around in the West and the comments are awful; the Switch app hasn't helped as I think a lot of people suddenly learnt of NicoNico as a result of its announcement and guides on how to download it.

Speaking of being part of an audience, I remember when NicoNico tried to expand into the West many years ago and did some live streams from various anime conventions. Those were a lot of fun to be part of and due to the very niche subject matter + niconico not being that well know, the comments weren't too spammy. A nice bonding between the viewers and those in front of the camera developed. An experience I doubt I'll ever experience again. (Twitch spam chat will never replicate it)

I think the same... that what make the charm of NicoNico ^^. I wish there was more JdG fansub, I'd love to see the reactions of the Takeshi's Challenge two part video (way better than JonTron's video on Takeshi's Challenge in my opinion).
