Nintendo decides to charge $25 (via an Amiibo) for a QoL feature in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

So the port will have a feature to let you switch from sky to land anywhere, anytime, instead of using specific statues. The only catch is to unlock the feature you'll need to buy an Amiibo, an extra expensive one at that, $25. What do fans think of this "pay for features" model Nintendo is going for?

Fucking duuuuummmmmbbbbb. There was annoying shit like this in BotW too, I ended getting a roll of programmable NFC stickers and just spoofed some amiibo shit with my phone to get around it in that game. Hell, you can buy amiibo cards outright now on Amazon from people.

Like other cult following products, the users will come up with mental gymnastics to justify this.
Such as, for example, the game being perfectly playable without the feature?

Or, for example, the possible idea that the non-essential extra feature for the game is being used as an incentive to make the expensive figurine a more justifiable purchase for people? Like literally every other Amiibo function is.

The problem with stupid shit like this is most fans would have bought it anyway. The number of people who will be incentivised to buy it for this reason alone is a fraction of a fraction. It only serves to piss people off for very little benefit.

Hiding a feature that is standard for any adventure game behind a paywall is wrong.

They upresed a Wii game for $60...

I have no interest in the game (played it on Wii and it’s the weakest game in the series) but this Amiibo looks great, SS Zelda is the best version.

It clearly wasn't standard when Skyward Sword was made. A remake isn't required to include it. Amiibo 'lock' outright cheats behind those paywalls as well - it doesn't mean they should be part of the base game they're added to, either.

Really don't see the issue. Gotta agree with Sean, it's more or less a cheat and not part of the original base game design. It's not a must have feature that one couldn't live without, it's not locking a base game feature behind a figurine. Gotta give those plastic toys some in game value too I suppose even though I believe it's hardly ever the deciding factor for buying one seing how their main value is a collectable.

Completely optional, it's not removing features that were there originally, and people who buy amiibo probably do it mainly for collection purposes rather than to actually exploit the in-game features?

Nintendo isn't gimping the original content for this. They're also not holding a gun to your head so you buy amiibo. Being forced to make an account to EA or Bethesda to play a game offline is much scummier, even if it doesn't cost you money (you're giving them contacts and data), and that happened.

BTW, I stopped buying amiibo ages ago, and at the moment I'm not planning on buying SS "remastered".

I always see this but kinda doubt it.

At least to start; random shitty plastic figures wouldn’t have created such a market, the gimmick started it all.

You've got to be kidding me 🤣

This is a remaster of the game.. QOL improvements are part of the deal..
If mass effect legacy edition did this there would be war.

I agree that it's bad in general to lock features like this behind amiibo.

But considering it requires the amiibo to work it's barely a QoL feature to begin with imo. It looks more bothersome to me to have to use that thing just to "fast" travel.

Stupid decision by Nintendo, could have been a great QoL feature otherwise.

It doesn't require the amibo to work.. that's the way they implemented it in the end but it didn't need to be like that.

There is no defending this decision by Nintendo. They tried to pull this with Breath of the Wild but this is worse because Skyward Sword needs all the help it can get for a remaster and they pull a stunt like this.

Just to reiterate. This is a full priced remaster which is bad enough as it is but to quality of life improvements behind a plastic toy.

Shocking.

Its shit of course but hardly new. How much have EA made via Sony and Microsoft consoles with their Fifa, Star Wars, etc lootboxes?

As if full price wasn't enough. Would love to play this game since I missed out on it originally, but the price point is just ridiculous. Why couldn't they have thrown in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess? It could have been a Zelda 3D All Stars. That would have justified the price point.

Zelda 3D All Stars was an option but people negatively reacted to limited digital release of the first party Mario 3D All Stars. As a compromise you now pay full whack for the prolonged chance to buy one of the games. Thanks Nintendo

I remember when they did this with Hard Mode in the Metroid II remake. It's bullshit... but this is what the video game industry has become and it is only going to get worse. So get used to it.

Nintendo does this, because they know they can get away with it. Now what does that tell you about the fanbase? Eating every turd Nintendo feeds them. As if asking full price for the game itself wasn't enough.

Give any of these companies an inch and they will take a mile. Gamer's have been far to accommodating in the pursuit of profits, for far too long. None of these guys are looking out for us, the little guy.

Sure, anything is hypothetically possible and things can always change. But as is you do need the Amiibo for it to work in the game right now which looks more like an annoyance than QoL to me.

I love how upset people are lol.

It's more than tedious to pick out your amiibo, scan back and forth from the menus whenever you want to teleport or teleport back. There are even tons of statues for fast travel already, you have to be so retarded or mentally disabled that you needed one to finish out the game.

I said it back when BOTW was getting such accolades in my circle of friends...

But for ALL the whining about DLC and seedy practices from Sony and MS and third parties (much of which is deserved), ONLY Nintendo was asking for 12 to 20+ bucks for extra costumes and other goodies...and no I think it's gross.

Some will say "but you get a collectable" and that's true, but if it was about the collectable and not the game code I would think they would offer the costume etc DLC on their store, and last I checked they don't

The worst zelda game has the worst amiibo integration.
I’m not shocked.

Corporate apologism with a pinch of aggression towards people that do not fall in line ;). Nice…

People always talk shit about EA of Ubi, but Nintendo are a bunch of sleazy dogs too when push comes to shove.

I have a feeling that it's not the killer QOL feature that the article makes it out to be - in fact, it sounds kinda superfluous to me tbh - but I personally don't even mind it, since NFC cards are a thing.

It didn't take long, did it. Already 3 peeps defending it.
Counterpoint: It didn’t take long, did it. Two threads full of people shitting on Nintendo for selling a completely optional item that unlocks a function that can’t be even classified as DLC.

That’s why they completely reworked the controls.

So what's the total cost of the game now?
$60, exactly as yesterday.

Look, you can complain about this all you want, but at least be honest and don’t try to make it appear like what it isn’t, i.e. Nintendo locking “DLC” or “necessary QoL features” behind a (not) compulsory plastic toy that people will buy mainly because it’s a plastic toy they like and want in their collection.

The collectable is the point. The point is the Amiibo bonuses aren't DLC. They're not supposed to be in the game. You get the extra stuff as a bonus for buying the collectable, not the other way around. If the bonus was the point, Nintendo would have been far more serious about making sure you actually own the amiibo when you activate it, and aren't just using some phone app or cloned card.
