Nintendo Downloads - June 2009 (VC / WiiWare / DSiWare)

I almost feel like they've switched what kind of gamer they're targeting with the downloadable games. These things used to appeal to me.
Fix this with Cave Story!

Icarian goddammit. You guys can already play Cave Story. I want my made-for-the-Wii platformer.

Icarian, or Nyxquest as it's now called, isn't that great to be honest. It's quite pretty but I think I preferred Lost Winds, although Icarian does have the advantage of being linear and not having a confusing overworld with no map. The last few levels are quite demanding in asking you to do several things at once which is good if you like a challenge, but on the whole it's pretty straightforward and it plays out as you'd expect. It's a decent 6/10 kind of game but don't go expecting great things from it.

Really? Everything I've read seems to suggest that Icarian's puzzles are a lot less straightforward than Lost Winds'.

I wish Sega would release Fantasy Zone II DX on WiiWare. It deserves more exposure than it has now, as a piece of import-only Sega Ages obscuria.

You might want to wait for when Nintendo releases the Brain Age Express sudoku pack, like I believe they've done in Japan. It's about the best UI for playing the game ever. (I haven't personally tried this one, but I've read that while serviceable, it doesn't touch the Brain Age one.)

Anyway, if that one turns you into a Sudoku nut, then you can jump for this one and get some more puzzles. :)

Thanks for the heads-up. Checked out a commercial of that game on YouTube and yeah, the interface does look great. I might wait until that one.

Edit: this one also has a 'handwriting' option to fill in the squares, btw.

I love the fact that Silver Star Reversi's Press Release is the exact same thing as Silver Star Chess. I didn't think that the PR for it could get any worse, but apparently it can :lol

Poor guy.

Silver Star Chess is the most rudimentary chess game I've EVER played, dating back 25+ years.

So that's new and original software? Is it me or Wiiware games doesn't take much risk into creativity lately.

Good thing we have DSiWare!

(actually WiiWare's real problem is that the interesting things are still yet to come)

NINTENDO DOWNLOAD - IT'S NO REEL FANTASY
I've known that for over a year now--in fact, June 2008 was when, for the first time, I hadn't bought a VC game in two months. (And back then they were still doing two releases per week!)

Fantasy Zone II, on the other hand, is still my first new downloadable Wii purchase since Detana!! Twinbee on March 23rd--over three months. Not that I'm not happy to have it, but Nintendo still needs to hurry up with Cave Story, Super Smash Bros., Pulseman, the rest of the Mega Man series, the three SNES Mega Man X games, Adventures of Lolo 3, and a mess of other things which look significantly more appealing than what typically crops up on WiiWare from week to week.

Edit: Teleporter puzzles in every level of a 2D shooter? Fantasy Zone II is one strange game.

Fantasy Zone 2: Tears of Apo Apo is pretty good. Really wish Sega would release that Sega Ages-only sequel to the rest of the world though. It sounds like the best Fantasy Zone game ever. =(

Fantasy Zone II is nice, and on any other occasion I'd eagerly buy some points for it. But I'm so embittered by the lack of Cave Story these past few months that I really can't bring myself to give Nintendo any money right now.

I'm actually really annoyed by the fact that I haven't bought anything on the VC since Detana!! Twinbee. Every time I think this service has hit rock-bottom in terms of quality, it keeps finding new ways to sink.

so if this is a shit week that means next week has to be good right? Then after that another calculator week? I'm trying to figure out the shit formula here.

Aren't they out of clocks and calculators now? Tingle excepted, which I'd be shocked to see make it out of Japan.
I'd buy it

I totally have this feeling that Nintendo knows that at this rate they'll run out of games by like september and they don't know what to do. I expect to see a zero DSi games week at least once this summer.

If they don't know what to do, I have a suggestion for them. It involves classic games.

Thanks. How does the bounding box compare to Onslaught and Metroid Prime 3's options?

I don't know. You never see it and you can't change it. You can only change your turn speed. If you've played Onslaught then you'll know how this plays. They are about the same with this one being a little faster.

It's such a good idea, I can definitely believe that Nintendo hasn't done it because it's too good an idea for them to implement.

Besides, with the VC in the state that it's in now, it would probably be an eternity before we got anything good.

Is it possible we're just in a "crank out the backlog" stage of WiiWare? There were all those stories of huge numbers of games waiting to be released...

Any impressions of Sudoku?

Also, I just want to say that BoxLife has consumed my existence. It is AMAZING. I see pre-folded box shapes everywhere now... o_O

One of the best reasonings I've heard for there not being VC on DSi is that Nintendo is waiting for the points to expire and trying to promote DSiWare first VC second. This is to force players into trying something they ordinarily wouldn't since looking at the thread for Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony's download games people seem to drawn only to classic ports but flat out refuse to try many of the good originals. If they could get people to buy even by one game it might help them realize what they are missing.

NOA, would have killed you to release a VC arcade game today alongside Fantasy Zone II Tears of He Who Got His Gaming Stash Raided by Che Chou Back in the Day? I was all geared up for Galaga '88 (but is it worth getting if I already have the fantastic Galaga '90?)

FZ II is definitely worth 5 bucks though. I own the SMS cart and it's great. It gets extra points for being an original entry unlike the first.

i think a vc for dsi would be a terrible idea.

classic portable games should be downloadable to your wii.
and then you should be able to transfer some of these games and nes, snes, etc games to your dsi for portable play.

this is the real way to go.

I dunno why you were expecting Galaga '88, it just released in Japan a week ago.

i dunno i actually like the SMS art better in most of those comparison shots

Thats because you're not seeing it in motion.

Everything in the SMS version is static and flat. There is parallax out the ass in the System 16 version, and everything has tons of frames of animation.

Plus, the system 16 version is a much better game. And I say this as a huge Fantasy Zone fanboy.

EDIT: Here, see it the way it's meant to be seen

ok, i was wrong, that looks hot

Sega's been so good to it's extremely loyal Fantasy Zone fanbase in recent years. Full remakes of both Fantasy Zone 1 and Fantasy Zone 2 with tons of new content. The Sega ages port of Fantasy Zone 1 is just as great, as it features 4 new levels and tons of unlockable new powerups, like the dark wings.

It's weird that after 2 decades of neglect, sega chose to embrace it's first mascot so hard. Shame most of it stayed in Japan.

Oh yeah, whoops. :\ They could still give us at least one VCA title a week though to even out the one VC title death march.

edit: Where was the FZ I remake?

It was one of the first Sega Ages titles released on the PS2. It's also on the only Sega Ages compilation to come to the US and UK.

quick video of the new items

There are also 4 unlockable new levels. In the fantasy zone remake, enemies drop red coins in addition to the normal coins. These don't get added to your currency, but instead to tallied up when you get game over. Over multiple playthroughs, you can use this money to buy additional songs, unlock the soundtrack, unlock new items in the shop, buy new stages, and unlock new features (like rapid fire and continue). This is easily the best game in the Sega Classics Collection.

Its sudoku. There are timed modes and a type of "career" mode where you work your way through the different levels from rookie to sudoku master. Its fine for 5 bucks, considering sudoku is a good time passer on a road trip, and I like having it on the internal memory.

Plus the music is catchy as hell :lol seriously its like one track that loops over and over, but its relaxing and...idk, almost tropical i guess.
