Welcome to the Nintendo Digital Sales Charts Official Thread for March and April!

So, in order to avoid any kind of misunderstanding: what are these charts about? What do they mean?

1. Introduction

Digital stores are becoming more and more important as the time goes by. And this can be said for retail titles being sold on digital stores too. After a quite bad beginning in the digital space (DSiWare but, above all, WiiWare and all its restrictions both from development and economic points of view), Nintendo made lots of improvement through 3DS and Wii U, especially for developers (the most recent improvement has been removing office space restriction), even if there are many things that can and should be one for a much bigger improvement (one for all: accounts not linked to consoles). Still, both the eShops for 3DS and Wii U provide various sales charts too, costantly updated and these are the most important things for this thread. So, after this brief introduction, let's clarify how these charts work and

*look at SmokyDave's post in a random sales thread*

SmokyDave: Eh, looking at Persona's sales in UK, I don't doubt third party titles would sell more on Vita than they do on 3DS right now worldwide :)

...That's factually WRONG! I need to counterattack his trolling! Guys, you continue to explain what is this thread about while I'm away, ok? My God, why. *slams door*

Pit:...Is it just me, or did he remind Viridi in this occasion?
Palutena: That sudden change of feelings was pretty reminiscent of Viridi. He's also a bit annoying, like her. But well, since we're here, let's continue the explanation.
Pit: AND IT'S ON LIKE...
Palutena: No Pit, it's protected by copyright, you can't.
Pit: What...is a copyright?
Palutena: Let's just say that is something that can make you sad. Do you want to be like Bill?
Pit: Bill who?
Palutena: That poor localiser who said something bad and that now is in the basement in Japan forced to look carefully at fruits for the rest of its life. Do you want to end like him, Pit?
Pit:...IT'S ON!
Palutena: Good reasonable boy.

2. The charts on eShop

2.1 How charts are organised

Pit: *looking at the charts* Wow, so many titles! So many charts!
Palutena: These are the Charts. You can use a filter on 3DS in order to look at Current Releases charts and All-Time charts. The Current Releases charts represent how games are currently selling on eShop, while the All-Time charts rank the top 20 best selling titles since the launch of the services
Pit: Ehi, on 3DS there's another filter when I look at the charts! It seems I can filter both Current Releases and All-Time in order to see rankings with all the titles, or just 3DS only titles, or just DSiwares, or just Virtual Console titles!
Palutena: That's right, Pit.

2.2 Ratings

Pit: I've already seen charts posted in the "Nintendo Download" thread, but I don't understand what are those numbers next to each game. Are those...the sales? Damn, my 3D Classics sold next to nothing, less than 12.000 units! People don't want me, why! I'm a good guy always respecting everyone!
Palutena: Don't worry Pit. Those aren't sales: the numbers you see next to games when charts are posted are the amounts of ratings given by users who played at least one hour to the games.
Pit: That makes me feel a lot better! And now I understand the stars for every title in the charts: they're the average of all ratings! But why can't we know directly sales of every title? Those would make sales discussion much better.
Palutena: Unfortunately, Nintendo doesn't allow it: publishers can't talk about sales publicly. Otherwise...you remember Bill, no? Well...worse.
Pit: Ugh. Such a big secrecy coming from someone that laughs so much when he interviews developers. That's the sign there's a dark side in everyone of us.
Pitoo: In fact, I don't exsist at all, indeed.

2.3 Different region, different charts

Pit: Pitoo, you here...too?!? ...Why no one's laughing, that was a good joke!
Pitoo: That was a disaster, not a joke. I'm here also to talk about charts too. Especially about the regions.
Palutena: Ah, you mean the fact that charts are different depending on the region.
Pitoo: Exactly. The eShop charts are not worldwide, but are tied to specific regions. And the number of ratings as well. The 12.000 rating for...err, our 3D Classics was just for US, as well as the charts. There are charts specific for US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan. And then the European charts: UK, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and some countries are counted together, like Greece + Scandinavia and Spain + Portugal.
Pit: The elencation would have been much better with some music! I remember seeing a cartoon many years ago teaching every nation in the world with a song, that was amazing. Oh, I still remember nations thanks to that song, do you want to hear it?
Palutena: Pit, I don't think it's the ca
Pit: *singing* United States, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Haiti, Jamaica, Peru...
Pitoo: I should have stayed at home definitely, it's embarassing.
Palutena: And that's nothing compared to its love for its obsession for Hot Springs. Think that months ago, he...

*slams door* I'M BACK! That SmokyDave, blergh!

Palutena: Oh, you're back. We have quite explained the charts, we can go now.
Pitoo: Thank God.
Pit: Ok, but I'd like to continue singing while we go
Pitoo: FOR THE LOVE OF GODS, PLEASE N
Pit: *singing again* Republic Dominican, Cuba, Caribbean, Greenland, El Salvador too!
Pitoo:...Why

...Well, they've explained the charts, I've seen. Even singing, but still. Now, I'll explain how threads will be organised.

3. Organization of the threads

Nintendo eShop Charts Threads will be bi-monthly. For example, this one will be for March and April, the next for May and June, the other for July and August, and so on. The idea is that everyday these thread will collect Current Titles Charts coming from the various regions. So far, we have two user that will alternate in posting US Charts (Colonel Mustard and lunchwithyuzo), but any contribution from anyone is well accepted, especially for countries like Canada, Mexico, and the European nations.

Major rules to follow:

Current Releases charts will be posted three times a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Posts with 3DS Current Releases charts can consist of just the overall 3DS Current Releases chart or it can contain the 3DS Only (retail + 3DS dd exclusives, so no DSiWare, no VC titles) Current Releases too. The same for Wii U when Wii U eShop will be updated with this filter.

If you've posted charts for one console, but you want to post them for the other console too, just update your previous post, so there aren't two links referring to charts for the same country.

And that should be enough. So, let me make other two posts as future archives and...let's lit off!

Additional notes:

1)I repeat: Ratings don't represent strictly sales. They're posted to give additional information about titles and (if possible) discussing about trends of ratings
2)The charts do represent what's selling right now...and don't. In fact, "Recent Releases" charts list the best selling software during the last two weeks. Stated in the eShop digital manual itself (thanks serplux XD ). There's also beril's experience testifying this.

I'm guessing the eShop charts use a pretty long average time period, probably around 10 days or so, so while the first day sales where the highest (though legs are pretty good so far), it kept climbing the charts for some time, simply by virtue of selling more than it did before it was released, then it went down a bit when the first few days sales were no longer accounted in the average.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
KNOWN / POSSIBLE DATAS SO FAR

1) Fire Emblem Awakening is over 63k digital copies downloaded as of March 2, 2013. Souce: NPD and NoA.
2) 3D Classics Excitebike has 23,440 ratings (last update: March 21, 2013) Considering the charts counted the period when it was free, its ratings mean that every title above Excitebike has been downloaded at least 23,440 times
3) Gunman Clive has been downloaded more times than on iOS and Android combined. Looking at the graph and considering what beril (GC's developer) said in the thread:
DarXsXY.png

Just making an eyeball estimate off of the graph and what you said, if every line was 5K that would put the iOS slightly above 10k sales, Google Play at above 25k sales and eShop at above 30k sales? 65,000 sales total?

close...

but you should realise that this is just the first two months for each platform (except the 3DS wich is a few days short of two months). The iOS and Android version has been out for almost a year and the 3DS sales just passed the android version the other day so their LTD sales are about the same, and the iOS LTD is close to the next line

This means Gunman Clive's sales are around 50k+ WW in three months.

4) Nintendo Land probably has been downloaded more than 7,000 times. All explained here:

US. It comes from the NPD thread, where creamsugar spilled Wii U February sales (66k) and said that 11% of total sales came from Zombi U bundle. The Zombi U bundle contains also a downloadable version of Nintendo Land, and those downloads are counted in charts since they come from a bundle / deal that has a price set (on the contrary, apps and games with no price at all aren't considered in charts); so, since 11% of 66k = slightly over 7k, this means that Nintendo Land has been downloaded probably 7,000 times (especially looking at how it suddenly increased in Current Charts after ZombiU bundle's release), and that's the inferior limit for its sales.
5)Touch Battle Tank 3D has been downloaded more than 100k times: http://www.4gamer.net/games/142/G014231/20130425112/

It's named Pokemon Dream Radar here in Canada. Unless the language is set to French, which I'm not sure what it's called in French.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
If you've noticed the OP again, you have probably seen I've added two Additional Notes, one of them being

2)Actually, the charts do represent what's selling right now...and don't. Too many titles climbed charts well after their official release, if not after the ending of a sale period, something quite impossible. This means that, while charts are updated costantly, they probably use a time period of around some days.

Well, actually this is true and there's someone who can testify it. It's beril, the NeoGaf user who developed Gunman Clive. I've contacted him two months ago about a possible comparison between GC's chart ranking on eShop compared to iOS / Android, especially considering it had a low debut on eShop and then it climbed the charts (and it's still very high). And his answer was pretty clear about how much eShop charts represent the current sales and don't represent them at the same time.
Here it is (and thanks beril for allowing me posting it :) )

I'm guessing the eShop charts use a pretty long average time period, probably around 10 days or so, so while the first day sales where the highest (though legs are pretty good so far), it kept climbing the charts for some time, simply by virtue of selling more than it did before it was released, then it went down a bit when the first few days sales were no longer accounted in the average.

So GC's sales have been higher at debut, but on charts we've seen the title debuting quite lower than the positions it occupied around a week later (and where it's still charting). This because the time period used by the charts is quite long, and titles start rising after that period is passed. So, using the most recent example, seeing Fire Emblem topping the charts right after its release tells us that the game had not just a good digital debut, but an amazing digital debut, since it obtained to do it despite the long time period considered by charts.
At the same time, seeing titles like Etrian Odyssey IV being in top 10 after being out of top 20 / 16th on Monday don't tell us that it's having legs, but that now we're seeing its true potential in charts, a possibly good but not mindblowing potential.

EDIT: Going to edit the OP so everyone can see this.

Denpa Ningen 1 & 2 sandwiching 3D Classics Kirby, I see. Strange that the Japanese Current Releases chart lists also videos, didn't think they would have been so popular to enter rankings anywhere. =P

I guess Shaun the Sheep is popular in Japan? I think they're also ultra-cheap but still sucks that they chart so high and most non-first party Virtual Console titles struggle.

Yup, done!

You know, I'm confused. The "Recent Releases" charts aren't really recent releases, are they? It's more like Recent Best-Sellers. I mean, there are games on those charts which were released ages ago.

As a note, if you read the manual (lol) for the Nintendo eShop on the 3DS, it says:

Recent Releases
Lists the most popular software of the past two weeks.

So that whole theory in the OP is correct.

Oh, you're right. Actually, I must admit it was an error but you've raised a good point: charts referring to times like 1:00 GMT are tricky, since, using your example, your chart could be referred both to March 11th (using GMT) and March 12th (using EST). Considering most of Neogaf posters are in US, for them it'd make more sense to use EST for the Archives, especially considering the actual times the charts referred to are indicated at the beginning of every post. Yes, I think this can be a good criteria.

Ok then I did it. I think, OP, that daily charts will be too much even for GAF! IMO only the global recent sales every two weeks should be enought. Top 20s are too much for some filter to apply and the data to remain relevant past the 5 first places of, let's say for example, 3DS virtual console.
All time charts should be cool once per quarter, maybe.

About the All-Time Charts: maybe once per quarter is just a too big span of time to comprehend trends, but once a month instead of once a week could be a good compromise. It's a possibility I'll consider.

About Daily Charts: charts change costantly, even considering the two weeks time period. Example: charts on...16th March will consider sales for the period going from 3rd to 16th, while charts on 17th will consider the one from 4th to 17th, etc.etc. But if you don't feel posting the charts for a specific day for any reason, there's no problem. Still, originally I thought that posting charts three times per week could have been good too, with posting them daily as the best outcome possible. We could do it in this way: if people here don't have the possibility / don't want to post them daily, three days a week could be good too.

You know, I'm also starting thinking we could follow a certain schedule, posting charts just in fixed days, like monday, wednesday and friday. Let me know if you think it's a good idea; I want this project to work, so I'm open to proposals.

I think all-time charts should be posted bi-weekly (once every 2 weeks).

It is a pretty long span of time to have a possible change.

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Ok, so let's actually vote with posts.

1)Do you agree in posting "Recent Releases charts" not daily anymore, but just three days per week? Less work for everyone, more possibility of seeing this as an interest and not as a duty, and not a big change in understanding sales trends. And, above all, Archives being much more readable.

2)If you agree with three days per week, what days would you select for posting charts? I proposed monday, wednesday and friday, since this schedule would consist of:
Monday, that represents both the day before usual tuesday's retail releases and the day after Nintendo's big sunday releases.
Wednesday, representing the day after usual tuesday's retail releases and before the eShop updates with the brand new downloadable content
Friday: the day after the brand new downloadable content is lauched
And week-end would be free of charts.

3)How many times should we post All-Time charts? Options:
Once a week
Once a month
Once a quarter
Your personal proposal (like DaBoss):

Let me all know your opinion. For the first two, I'd like to have answers as soon as possible, since they are about the most posted charts here :D

You know, I'm also starting thinking we could follow a certain schedule, posting charts just in fixed days, like monday, wednesday and friday. Let me know if you think it's a good idea; I want this project to work, so I'm open to proposals.

Yeah fixed days should be cool IMO, but then again, the process is pretty tidious and I doubt it make sense for recent releases/sales charts, since we won't (I assume) have a regular flow of data for each country.
However for the all-time charts, every 1st of the month should be great.

Finally, we will see how things works indeed, but I'm starting to think that, with too much data (several new country charts each day), we will not have the time/the possibility to develop a discussion around it.

Thinking while typing, maybe we should do it once per week, trying to match the PAL charts (from Gfk) threads. By the way look at it, some weeks, there is not so much discussion in those topics. ;)

Edit:
1) I prefer longer spans, even if I heard the arguments about how Nintendo publish its charts :) So 3/week, 1/week even :)
2) monday, wednesday and friday I don't care much, but in PAL land releases are on thursdays, so monday->wednesday will have low changes and low sales at all!;
3) Once a month then :)

1) 3 days per week sounds good.

2) Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are good suggestions

3) Same as I said before, once every 2 weeks.

I'm down for thrice weekly recent sales charts, and biweekly or monthly all-time charts. Seems fair.

Also, if daboss wants, we can split duties for the Canadian charts. I'll cover Wii U, he can do 3DS.

We should probably also work out what sorts of 3DS charts we are posting, as right now it's a bit of a hodgepodge of all software, downloads only, etc.

Guatemala, Bolivia, then Argentina, and Ecuador, Chile, Brazil.
Costa Rica, Belize, Nicaragua, Bermuda, Bahamas, Tobaho, San Juan...
Paraguay, Uruguay, Suriname, and French Guiana, Barbados, and Guam!...

(I have no idea what's going on in the OP, but I now have to mentally finish the song thanks to it. Norway and Sweden and Iceland and Finland...)

...and Germany now in one piece.

As for the questions, 3 days a week for recent releases is good, bi-weekly for all time releases is good, and bi-weekly for all-time charts is also good.
