Nintendo, it's time to introduce colored versions of the Wii U

Yesterday I ordered a Wii U and would have loved to get a colored one. But there's still only black and white.

There's not even some kind of special limited edition, nothing.

Please Nintendo, you have like 30 different editions of the 3DS, release some colored Wii U.

Google image search shows some examples:

It's not selling as is, how would colors help? They don't even want the ones they have.
A lower price is what it needs.

Still surprised they haven't relaunched it with a GamePad redesign, 2015 would be the year to do it with the lineup they've got.

More colors would complicate things as retailers are reluctant to carry too many SKUs. (at least in the US)

I'm happy with my black Wii U but I agree that color variety is always great. Maybe they'll release a limited one once the new Zelda game is out. :)

Well there was kind of the problem for awhile there that Wii Us were not selling, so I doubt any retailer would want to get stuck with additional stock over color SKUs

I was under the impression that Japan for example is crazy about limited editions, so they could at least try and release a Mario or Zelda themed version.

It just annoys me that the black and white are separated into Deluxe and Basic. I should be able to buy a deluxe white or basic black if I want to.

This is one of the few consoles where I prefer the white one over black. It's cuter, less fingerprint-y and it makes me think of the Wii, and that's pretty good.

Making a console color variant kinda depends on it selling well. I doubt they've gone through the stock that already exists.

I love my Wii U, but I don't see it getting a redesign or anything like it.
Edit:
Actually our Wii U at my house has a NES decal on it. Excuse the weird location, as I've stated on gaf many times we don't play the Wii U very often so I had to uncover it. A bunch of PS4 games and skylanders had been covering it lol.

That looks really good.

I'd be bang up for a NES skinned U :)

Thanks. If you look at the top theres a little gash but yeah other than that it's totally fine. Not sure where he got the decal from. Wii U was actually free too from a Burger King contest at launch?

That looks pretty good! You need to do the gamepad like the NES controller tho ;)

It wouldn't make any financial sense. First priority is getting the Wii U's they have already sitting around sold, manufacturing more and giving them all different colors would only make it harder to make a profit on them.

But they should indeed release a limited NES edition or something. One custom console would fly off the shelves, if only because of collectors buying the crap out of a rare system like that.

They should release a custom color like brown that nobody would want, then immediately announce it's been discontinued. Sell like hot cakes it would.

Black looks *so* good on it, though.

The Black Wii with the blue LED WiiConnect24 strip was a beautiful little box, too.

I don't think they are manufacturing any new WiiU units currently. They are probably still selling units manufactured in 2013.

This. They are still selling the units produced in 2013. That's why they can't pricecut/pricescale.

Also this. One newly produced limited edition series with a higher margin might be profitable for them. But the question is: is it worth it for the small amount of profit it would make.

On a serious note:
  • introducing multiple versions of hardware that doesn't sell that well isn't a good idea
  • faceplates/shells are a good idea

Serious question: how expensive is it to integrate support for replacement shells in a console?

The console isn't popular enough to go fancy with colors, I guess. Even the limited edition Wind Waker Wii U was just the black one with a decal printed on top of the gamepad:

I would be happy if they just released silicon covers in multiple colors, but I can't even find those in any nice/unique colours.

I want a nice mint one. :3
