Nintendo screws Nintendo over - again

Rocked said:
There's nothing wrong with the price. £99 is pretty much what I was expecting. Drama queens FTL!

Well, let's see. $130 is currently around £70. Even adding VAT onto that, it's only a little over £80. Really, this should've been no more than £85, and I'd love to hear Nintendo's explanation for this.

But yeah, it's not like we're not used to being screwed. Which is why I haven't bought anything game-related in the UK for a long time.

DS Launched in the UK at £99. So that for the DS Lite is good in that sense. (Normal DS is now £89). Compared with exchange rates, with VAT, I have no idea.

I think tax is arelady inclusive in $150 for Europe, isn't it a law for that?

For US, we have to pay sales tax on top of that.

$130 + 17% (approx, it varies from 15-25) VAT ~ $152
$152 = 119€
150€ = $190

Therefor: 150€ = 119€

Proven by math.

:/

Hell, I understad if they "have" to go with an exchange rate of 1:1, considering they have no way of knowing if the euro won't go down compared against the dollar. That's basically common practise. But making the product more expensive even after adding vat and accounting for currency fluctuation? That's just shit.

Meh, seems like I'll be getting one from the US then.

Looks similar to an old CK one advert:

European prices are higher for all electronics. Deal with it guys and stop whining. DS price is great.

No they are not, and no, the price is not great.

Macbook: $1099, 1079€
Playstation 2 (before the price drop): $149, 149€
Xbox 360: $399, 399€
Nintendo DS at launch: 149$, 149€
Nintendo DS after price drop: 129$, 129€

And now go troll some 360 thread.

It´s not only VAT.

I can´t confirm it, but companies have special taxes for electronic devices if you import them to Europe. So If you send X units, you pay not only for transport but the special tax.

It´s not a bad prize.

Why should we stop whining? It's not just that electronics are most expensive in Europe.

USA get DSLite for the same price as DS

Europe gets a DS + 20Euro price.

Tell me how that doesn't qualify as Nintendo screwing (future) DSLite owners in EU.

FFS, let me explain it ONE MORE TIME

$130 in US = before tax
E150 in EU = after tax

$130 + ~17-19% tax = $130 + ~$22-24 = $152-154

Now stop your bitching.

let me explain to you that xbox 360 is 399 euro after tax!
150 euro is a rip off.

I'm selling my original DS now, buying Phoenix Wright and New Super Mario Bros. so I'll really enjoy my Lite when it eventually arrives... Am I crazy, GAF?

(Oooh, first post!)

If it's any condolence for you, my canadian friends are complaining it's 150$CDN, when the dollar is apparently almost on par with the US dollar.
Damn straight.

PS2 = $130 US or $130 CAD
DSL = $130 US or $150 CAD

Fuck you Nintendo.

The DS Lite European launch-info has been revealed! The good news: it's the 23rd of june, pretty soon. The bad news: white only... and it's fricking 150 euro's. Japan gets it for approximately $135. The USA pays $130. But noooo, us Europeans have to pay more.

.

On April 24:
Releasedate: June 23rd
Colours: Crystal White
Price Tag: EUR 149.99

April 27:
Well, although I could get the confirmation for the price tag (EUR 149.99) and the colour (Crystal White), no-one could tell me whether it will launch on June 23rd or June 30th.

that burns me up, I will protest by buying the system on day 1.

:(

OK then. But it's 20 euros and it worths it. NOE is famous for its incompetence what can you do? DS lite is a great handheld and unless you wanna wait for 20 lousy euros I suggest you preorder it because I suspect shortages.

I'm not talking about value. The price point is a rip off, compared to all the other markets. I'll just have a friend of mine buy one in the US and send it to me as a gift.

100€ (+s&h) DSL wins.

looks like i'll be buying my DS Lite in new york city instead of toronto just like my original DS. until nintendo of canada starts pricing the consoles in a fair way i will keep doing that. i'm just lucky i go to new york so often or otherwise i wouldn't be able to do these things!

Was supposed to be 130 euro's. Apparently DS-Gamers' source was wrong on that point and it's 150 now.

:(

I'd say the americans are to blame. We are supporting their $129 price point with our $190 DSL :/

Seems like it. Remember it was meant to be a bit more at first there.

Iwata probably was afraid that Reggie would beat him up at E3, so he agreed to the "price drop". Guybrush on the other hand doesn't seem too scary, so Iwata made him pay.

I hope its a rumor because its a rip-off. They are doind 1$=1€ since a little while eh?

And 1$=1€ is a rip-off itself, VAT included or not...now, this rumor is worse.

wtf, 150CAD = €106?
wtf, 130USD = €92?

OMG
FUCKTARDS
After adding the 15% tax* I'd have to pay it would come to $172.50 CAD or just over €121.

*It'll be reduced to 14% July 1st

I'll wait and hope for a Yoshis Island 2 Edition at the end of 2006 =).

Nope, it's not. You just said yourself that you have to add the VAT. I'll take the launch price of the old ds as an example:

$149 ~ 124€ (Obviously not taking the current us/eu exchange rate)

124€ + 15-20% VAT: 145€

Add to that the cost for a longer warranty period, and the booklets etc. that are usually printed in several languages, and you have a fairly comparable price.

So you'll be paying about $141 US after tax or about $157 CAD, a savings of about $15 CAD.

yeah its only £10 more than the current DS price...but I still think these handhelds are pretty expensive. £100 for a handheld is a lot of money, but at least the DS is relatively affordable and has cheaper software. It amazed me that people were buying £200 - £300 PSP bundles around its launch

Okay, those ads are pretty odd. I do like this one, though:

But it seems like they're torn between trying to portray them as Roman goddesses (the all white clothes and setting; ethereal) or just normal models who happen to be playing DS Lite...
