Yuzu Emulator Devs and developer of emulators in general started fighting back

Nintendo is suing the creators of popular Switch emulator Yuzu, saying their tech illegally circumvents Nintendo's software encryption and facilitates piracy. Seeks damages for alleged violations and a shutdown of the emulator.

From what I understand they only really care about stuff they're currently selling (Switch games) rather than older consoles, and I don't think Dolphin infringes on the Wii or GC software itself but rather is custom made

There's precedent, Nintendo tried to sue emulators before and they lost. Emulators that do not use proprietary software, which are fully reversed engineered are legal.

Emulators are legal under fair use laws as long as they are proprietary and do not use copyrighted code, look up Sony Vs Bleem.

Sony, Nintendo have been trying to shut down emulators for over 2 decades but courts have ruled that they're perfectly legal.

That won't hold up in court. If it's your device and you paid for it, you can do whatever you want with it.

I don't actually believe people rip their own games and they have a Switch console while emulating those very same games

Incidentally, this has nothing to do with emulation, strictly speaking, and all with the game itself being leaked.

A pirated Switch game is ALSO playable on a Switch, not just on an emulator.

Sure and if that's how you feel about emulation then don't emulate current systems. That doesn't apply to anyone but you though. Factually, if I rip a game from my Nintendo cartredge, for whatever reason I want, and play it in an emulator then I have broken no laws. Neither has Tropic Haze.

Yuzu allows people to play Switch games at respectable frame rates and resolutions unlike Nintendo's garbage system.

to be fair Nintendo waited years after the emulator was already great enough to play every game. You can even use a phone to play switch games.

Tears of the Kingdom was fully playable on Nintendo’s hardware, which they released with a vulnerability allowing unlicensed code to be run in 2017. Can they connect those 1m downloads to Yuzu and not people like my uncle who just downloaded the ROM and put it on their official hardware? Doubt.jpg

If they’re using any copyrighted or otherwise prohibited code, fine. But don’t point to those download figures as if pirates can’t just run their software on soft modded, stock hardware.

Dolphin, Cemu and Yuzu have all been contemporary with the Systems they emulate GC, Wii/U and Switch.
