Nintendo Switch #1 Selling Hardware in September. Nintendo Systems = 2/3 Total sales.

I wonder if the npd charges companies extra for the rights to brag about sales publicly

oh ok

So Metroid should be lower than that because of lower retail price?
Or could be higher than that, if the rankings above rabbids in the Nintendo-shared stats were multiple sku of a few games. I guess both versions of destiny and 2K are up there?

Switch WW sales must be at 5-6 million by now right?

Probably more like 6~8 since it was almost 5 mil back in June.

Yep. Japan's just shy of 1.9 million at present, and if Switch was at 2 million or more last month in the US, then even if Europe were lower than the other two, it'd be solidly around the 6 million mark I'd say. Factor in other regions for an extra few hundred thousand or so maybe.

Canada is normally 10% of US sales historically. So 6 million is probably a given.

I don't get it. Are they regretting putting their main Monster Hunter game on the other consoles? Only thing I can think of.

Yeah it's pretty confusing. It's good the Switch is doing well, but there's only a few million of them sold whereas there are nearly 100 millions PS4s and Xboxs out there, so what are they supposed to be losing out on here?

Bet Microsoft is really sweating now. They constantly get beat and pretty badly by the PS4 and now they have another competitor that is likely to erode even more of their muscle to control what games go on their system. If Switch continues like this all year there’d be no reason for Japanese games to go to Xbox One.

That and several other ridiculous decisions that each baffle the mind as to how they came to that conclusion. World is only the tip of the iceberg really, why Okami and the NES games aren't on the Switch this year is just unbelievable.

Okami? Not sure I follow.

I mean I'm not disagreeing with you- I just don't understand. Any particular reason for that particular game?

I'm guessing that Capcom was expected to back the Switch with a plethora of software, and Street Fighter: Gouge Edition left a bad taste in most mouths- I know it did for me.

But which NES games? I only ask because it seems like very few devs have ported NES games to the Switch, so why would we single Capcom out?

Sorry-- I try to be in the know but I am behind.

Best post.

This game smashed Capcom's expectations.

As for the question about NES games, Capcom has released two retro compilations this year on other platforms.

What? It's their own internal data compared to what the NPD provides.

You are saying the NPD can charge companies who collect and research their own sales data to be published.

I'm happily eating crow over the Switch. For a while there I was convinced Nintendo had another Wii U on their hands. Hopefully they can keep all this great momentum going beyond the holidays and into next year.

They played themselves by having nothing of note ready for the system in any territory. Now they're trying to play catch up while their competitors are making "itprintsmoney" gifs.

It's really strange because Capcom has never been shy about jumping into new platforms head first but maybe their recent underperforming games have made them a lot more conservative about greenlighting projects.

I can't blame them about MHW, the Switch didn't exist back when they started development, but not at least having XX ready to go at launch when everyone and their grandmother was expecting it given the timing is a huge headscratcher.

Well back at the financials ending June 30th we had

Japan: 1.12m
Americas: 1.96m
Other:1.63m
Total: 4.7m

So with Japan selling roughly 750k since then, it's reasonable to say that the Switch has probably cleared 7 million by now, if not close to 8 maybe? Depends if the shipment ratios hold true/close to the above ratio of sales I suppose.

Read my mini-essay on this topic. That will get you up to speed.

Aren't WW numbers for the Wii U like 8 million? Could it sell more than that in one year?

I'd also bet on around 8m, but partially because while the shipment ratios may have changed, it's likely that the shipment amounts have increased pretty heavily. We know what they've increased by in Japan but the US has seen quite a big stock boost too, likely higher than that in Japan (relatively speaking).

I'm guessing something like 7.3-7.5m WW will be announced at their earnings report in 2 weeks for the total through September.

Preach. Okami HD not being on Switch is a fucking travesty and I really can't fathom what the hell they are doing over there. I'ts just not comprehensible in any shape or form.

It's not really relevant to NA, but Capcom is possibly missing out on millions of sales in Japan by not having a version of the game on a handheld console.

Yea, I'd guess it's at a minimum of 7 million and may be closing in on 8 million at this point. Hopefully Nintendo can continue to keep the stock up and it will have an extremely good first year on the market.

I can elaborate on Okami here - it's a game often compared to Zelda, meaning it should have an audience on the Switch. The best selling version was on the Wii, with a control scheme that would still be possible on the Switch (with its bundled controllers), on top of being able to support conventional controls and a touch-based drawing scheme in handheld mode. Coming to everything but the current Nintendo platform just feels like they have no idea what they're doing, especially with how Switch games have been selling.

So Switch likely over 6 million units and we're not even in the holiday period.

Depending on how much they were able to produce for the holiday season, I can see it hitting 10 million units WW before the end of the calendar year.

What would you see driving PS4 hardware sales so that Sony can ship more than 20 million units to beat the last FY?

I can see that Gran Turismo Sport, Monster Hunter World, God War and Spider-Man are new games for the system that can help. But is it really enough to make Sony ship more than 20 million?

As I said in my old quote, Sony shipping more than 20 million PS4s in its fourth year in the market would mean there's no longer any point to seeing if it will surpass 100 million sales, it would have to be looked at to see if it could surpass the PS2 in sales.

"Everyone" can relax. I wasn't being literal. But I was calling back posts from April a month after the Switch had launched.

So yeah, I should have said, "Some people".

Last november wasnt that great for PS4 and with AC, Battlefront 2, COD and GTS I think it will be up this holiday.
