Nintendo Switch Preview Tour: Hands-On Impressions

Please stop quoting the image.

And does anyone have any more hands on impressions?

It's been fun, but I think we need to get this thread back on track before it gets locked.

It's basically a certainty that a D-Pad variant will come. It was in the patents. There's probably a reason why they jammed all the tech into the right Joy Con, not the left (IR camera, NFC) - because they want to see variant left ones at a lower manufacturing cost.

I dunno, they're already selling the left Joy-Con separately and it isn't any cheaper. :x

Yeah.. their avatar says it all really

Hahaha fringe af

Annnnnnnnnnd he's gone

Anyway, I'll probably pick up a Switch in the summer but I'm liking how high quality the build is this time around.

edit Lol at the below post

A surprising bit for me is how many folks seem to not mind the single joy-con play as much as they thought. When I saw the form factor, I was immediately like "nope, never gonna play with a single joy-con."

Now? I will use them in separate detached mode for any MP games that don't need RS camera control for sure.

From what I've seen as the average consensus, single joycon play is "not ideal, but serviceable." Which I suppose is fine for impromptu multiplayer sessions where you aren't necessarily going to be holding on to the thing for hours at a time. They seem tiny but I think since a lot of people are already pretty used to thumbing out messages on tiny touchscreen phone keyboards it's probably not as huge of an adjustment as a first look would make you think.

Nice photos. Looks like it was way way busier on Sunday than it was on Friday. It makes sense, but still surprising with how moderately crowded it was in the same venue. I'll post some pics I took too, though yours are much better in quality.

Side question: do people attending the public events get Switch themed stuff to take home too? I got a couple different things.

Yes we did take home some themed stuff. I got a cord organizer, a bottle of water and a Switch cookie.

Yeah this is my read as well. Obviously, they will never be as good as a full controller for comfort/relaxed precision, but I was sort of expecting dogshit based upon my own visual judgement. I will take "it works ok" over that :)

That said, I will see how that works out come 3/3.

Do we know how Switch online usernames work? Do I have to race to get a username that's not taken at midnight? Is our Nintendo ID username already being used for their other stuff?

Just a guess/assumption, but I would imagine it works the same way as it does on the Wii U online, where it defaults to displaying the name of the system's user. You can see in hiphoptherobot's UI video where he sets his name as "GAF" in his profile, that'll be it, linking to the Nintendo Account won't override that.

Of course other games can handle it differently. Animal Crossing and Monster Hunter, for instance, use character names that are set up in those particular games.

Played this in Chicago tonight. I tells ya, these Joy Cons feel a little cheap. Face button smallness is kind of a pain, shoulder buttons aren't particularly clicky or nice. The slide on SL/SR buttons travel half way down kinda mushily before even depressing the real buttons beneath. Not super impressed overall!

Still gettin one regardless, but dang. Thumbs up grip in Arms was pretty cool at least.

How about the weight of the Joycons?? Does they feel kinda heavy, light or in between? Maybe if you keep using them you will get used to the ergonomics, if not, you can always count with the Pro controller :)

It's insane how the Pro controller lasts 40 hours while the DS4 on PS4 only lasts 3. The pro controller on Wii U lasts 80 hours!

My main takeaway from the Chicago switch event (other than loving just about EVERYTHING I played) was that I disagree with people saying joycon grip and pro controller are essentially equivalent.

Maybe it's just me, but I REALLY disliked using the joycon grip. That's the method I had to use to play zelda and I really didn't like it. I can see it working in a pinch, but I can't envision any scenario where that would be my preferred method.

I played MK8 with the joycons apart (one in each hand) and thought that was pretty cool. And of course the pro controller (what I will be primarily using) was wonderful.

A few weeks ago I was quite annoyed to find out the joycon grip in the box wasn't the charging variety. Now I don't care because i sure ain't using that thing.

Mega props to Nintendo for a great switch event in Chicago. The staff was great, the atmosphere was fun, and --most importantly- they nailed crowd size perfectly. Other than Zelda , for which they did sessions where you could come back in a specific time slot-- you never had to wait more then a few minutes to play anything. Most games you could walk right up and play.

ARMS and Snipperclips were awesome and of course Zelda seems amazing. Playing competitive mario kart at a table with multiple switches was very cool. Bomberman isn't anything new; plays like classic bomberman. Puyo puyo Tetris is going to be great.

Wonderful event. Eagerly awaiting 3/3

Was anyone in this thread present for the live Q & A with Koizumi at the NYC hands-on event? I ask because I watched part of that Q & A on YouTube, during which one attendant in the crowd point-blank asked Koizumi (and I believe Takahashi was standing there as well) if Switch owners would be able to store and play digital titles on more than one Switch at a time, to which the answer essentially was "For the time being, no."

That one of the most glaring, critical problems with Nintendo's account system, digital distribution platform, and attitude towards consumers is being carried over from the Wii U era is not at all welcome news. I've posted this in more than one thread, because I don't believe most GAFers caught that Q & A, and I felt I should spread the word.

I'm still a junior, and therefore unable to create a new thread, but I believe this information is threadworthy. Would any GAFer mind making a new thread on this?

Got a link and time stamp?

Any news on Snipperclips launch date?

I remember that question and answer explicitly and I don't understand the problem. Why should you be able to buy software one time and simultaneously share it with 2, 3, 4 different Switches?

Because you can do that on PS4, XB1, and Steam.

And iOS, not sure about android.

Wait, so I could have my PSN account running, active without issue between multiple PS4s simultaneously? I assumed you'd have to deactivate one. Never tried.

I was at the event in Manchester this afternoon, and at the risk of spouting nought but hyperbole I was pretty blown away.

  • The form factor is smaller than expected and the screen is brilliant.
  • Splatoon 2 looks top in 60fps.
  • The HD rumble feature in the guess-how-many-balls-are-in-the-box mini game on 1-2 Switch is outstanding. Honestly was blown away.
  • Zelda.
