Well I wasnt aware of this and Im not sure it really matters...but, I sold my Wii and in the interest of keeping my info secure I went through the process of untying my MyNintendo.com account from the wii. I then went through the process of removing my log on info from the Wii and guess what? It deletes every purchase of VC games from the console. No way to keep what you paid for and transfer it to a new user. Only you have the right to play the games YOU paid for.

No way to recover those purchases either if at some point I decide to buy another Wii. Just a warning for you that the VC is even worse than a ROM dump, because you cant keep what you pay for.
 
From what I've heard around here if you call up Nintendo with your serial number they can usually see what you've bought and fix it for you if you have a new console. Not much use to you now if you've sold your Wii I guess.
 
Nintendo will transfer your shit if you buy a new Wii right away, I dunno what happens if you buy one much later.

If you don't like it, add the cost of the VC games to the sale price of your console, I don't see the problem here. Should you get free copies of all your games while the other guy already has all your games?
 
Nintendo is gonna love the free money when they release the inevitable HD Wii version. Time to pony up for those VC games again.

Are you serious? You mean, VC games are not tied to an account that's independent of the Wii? I was under the impression that you made an account, and then signed into the service.

That's pretty retarded.
 
Everything I wanted to say (like calling Nintendo to ensure you can keep your purchase history) is already here, so I just wanna say... nice thread title, dude. :/

Also I think as long as you have your My Nintendo account on the system then Nintendo will give you back the games you bought.

Well, Microsoft tie downloads to the console too. I agree, it's truly retarded.
 
Well Its my fault for buying the system and not enjoying it. But at least with my XBOX the games were tied to my account. I can sign in anywhere with my GT and have access to them.

I literally had to enter the serial number of my Wii for the wipe process to complete. (Oh and it doesnt let you know its gonna remove the games from the Wii in the process.)

how so? did you know you couldnt keep the games you paid for no matter what you do with the system? It was news to me when it happened.
 
So basically you want to sell your wii with your vc games and then dl the games again for free, thus getting the games twice? since the buyer of the original wii would also have free vc games.

By that logic i guess i've gotten away with 3 "free" copies of HL2 on Steam.

because to leave the game on the console you have to leave your logon to the VC store. I dont feel secure doing that. would you leave your gamertag on an xbox if you sold it?

The only way that the data can be transferred is if the system needed to be repaired, and was sent in to Nintendo for the repair. In that case, Nintendo can make an exception and transfer the data for you.

However, since you sold the system, there is no way for the data to be transferred. Unfortunately, you will need to purchase the games you want again. Sorry.


So, does that mean that in Wii-Too (hehehe) ....we all need to send our Wii consoles to Nintendo, along with our new consoles, so we can get our games that we bought back again, becuse of some ..laziness in Nintendo's part in creating a better structured system that at least recognized that you bought that game in the first place????

I love them, but they need to solve this whole issue..
I only miss Super Mario 64 and I spent "just" $20 in those 3 games...so no big deal...
But there are many out there with over 40 games, that they are going to lose in the next console??

All -3 main- companies are not held responsible for things that may happen in the future....
If for some reason Microsoft decides to delete a few Arcade games from Live, even after you paid for them,yo uwon't get your money back if for some reason you need to download them again..same with Sony..

Is the small letters/fine print at the end.. ;)

Uh, if he wasn't clear, all of the game were DELETED from the Wii itself. Basically, now no one gets access to them.

You don't have a real account with the Virtual Console. It's basically just a service where games you download appear on the My Nintendo site. Your credit card info or any personal data doesn't really remain, just your email for Nintendo's site.

Who cares, unlike XBL you have to re-enter your credit card info every time you buy Wii Points.

Doesn't Nintendo have a process to transfer your MyNintendo account to a new Wii, if that's the problem?

Logon? The Wii..
-Doesn't store credit card numbers
-Doesn't store username/passwords to your MyNintendo Profile
-Doesn't store any personal information


The VC is attached to the serial number of the Wii and your MyNintendo profile...not to anything else..even if someone gets your Wii with all the games..that person can't change the login, or anything...from MyNintendo..

True. When I bought my 360 Elite after my other one died I couldn't get my XBLA games back. They appeared as demos and not full games. Luckily I only had like 5 games and I didn't give a damn about them anymore.
 
What happens if you let your Gold account expire on XBL? Doesn't it lock out if you leave it dead for too long? Wasn't there also an issue that if you go from Gold to Silver, you can't go back to Gold or something? This'd prevent you from ever playing your XBLA games online again on a future XBox, no?

You can use the games if you connect to XBox Live. You need to be online to confirm they're yours to unlock them.

It sucks ass for those of use using the Wireless connector, because the last firmware update deactivated auto-signon for us. So if you want to play an XBLA game you bought on a previous XBox, you've got to manually log in first.

You can play them either silver or gold. Doesn't matter as long as you're connected online.

Can you go from Gold to Silver to Gold again? I remember a thread with someone complaining that you couldn't. If you can't, then you'd be left with games tied to a permanent Silver account, so no online gaming for you.

I tried that and it pretty much said "Screw". I didn't have many games anyways so I didn't really care. I basically only has Geometry Wars and Smash TV and a random 3 others. I was on Live when I put the Elite on. I wasn't able to transfer any of my previous data from my other HDD.
 
It's basically Nintendo's way of thanking you for being a disloyal bastard.

What?

No, no, no. You can always log out of an account after loading the game and log into another one, if that's the problem. If you have several accounts (like I did), you can also call 18004MYXBOX and have them dump all your purchased points into one account.

That way, you can repurchase your old stuff if you like.

What about Gold->Silver->Gold? And I think old gamertags would become permanently disabled after a certain amount of time on the old XBox, is that still the case?
 
Not that I've ever seen.

The best way to avoid all this hassle is to keep one account and renew it.

Buy renewal cards too.
 
Oh, well it shouldn't be a problem then. Your old account transfers to your Xbox 360, your Xbox 360 account stays active until it runs out, and even then I think it self-renews if you tied a credit card to it.

But the account will only revert to Silver after expiration of a code or non-payment. Otherwise, you're gold (pun intended).
 
I never could understand why people would buy a system only to resell it and then buy it again,. thats a total waste of money. The way Nintendo does VC games is dumb, but so is selling and rebuying systems. It isnt good financial sense. Its more what I'd call jumping the gun.

If you need money asap and you can buy the system cheaper in the future, it's not a total waste of money.

I'm the one stuck with Silver. I called to cancel it with the intention of resubscribing later on, the rep told me that was possible. Come time for this to happen, I try everything from using the old CC, a new CC and a Live code from the BK games, called up MS multiple times to no avail, they said it wasn't possible. Yay for misinformation. >_<

For XBLA, I bought four games (GW, MBU, Texas Hold em, Uno) on that account (Barnolde) and since I don't use the Barnolde account anymore as Silver blows, they are considered trials on the main account I use now. Also got three games (SF2,UMK3,DOOM) with the system I used to have. When that system broke, those became trials, because they were purchased with another gamertag. So my main account is currently locked out of $55 worth of games thanks to DRM.

I've read you have to call up MS, hassle them and try to get refunded the points to repurchase them, but that's just a pain in the ass. Plus, I'm not even sure if I could get the SF2,UMK3 and DOOM points back since they came with the system and I didn't buy them with either gt, but I got achievements in them on both accounts, so it's a maybe. It's the least MS could do after killing my Gold account I've had since being a beta tester.

XBLA games are tied to the system AND the account. The account used to purchase them can redownload them at any time, but if it's not on the system they were purchased for, they will be trials for all other accounts.

I have gone from silver > gold > silver > gold no problem.

when my gold membership expired a message popped up telling me its reverting back to silver and signed me out.

when I logged back in, it was silver again.

went and bought a 12 + 1 subscription card and went gold again a month or so later.

*EDIT*
you cannot cancel the subscription... you must let it expire... once you cancel it you cannot use it again.

That's true but in that sense then they probly shouldn't have the bought the system in the first place either and just waited.

It's like the people who bought the 360 at launch and sold them 3-6 months after the system came out because it had no games. Then rebought the system when Gears of War came out. I'd rather spend the $400 once.
