No Gears of War for Germany!!!1111

Of course its possible to cut or forbid any public medium, because of its violent content, but its no usual procedure anymore. The 18+ ratng fits to pretty much every gore movie.

Well that sucks big time...

Looks like it's time for you guys to "illegally" import from Holland!

Nah, online shopping is really big in Germany and its absolutely no big deal to import the UK version. Most gamers already ordered the UK/AT version because of the first rumours about the missing chainsaw anyway.

I find it bizarre that countries I don't consider to be particularly macho such as Canada (I'm Canadian) get sex and violence in their games but countries I do consider to be macho such as Germany (took the world on... TWICE) and Australia ("Now this is a knife") have heavily restricted the availability of violent games.

I think it's BECAUSE of Germany's history, they're now less 'comfortable' with violence and the powers that be are more sensitive to it in stuff like games.

You know there's this INTERNET. Buy the game in online UK or wherever, postal service is good, you'll get in it 2-3 days max. No problem.

Oh man, this thread is disturbing.

To make it short: if Microsoft would release the game in Germany, it would most likely be put on the index, which wouldn't make it illegal. You would be allowed to buy the game (if you are 18+ of course), you are also still allowed to import the indexed international version from anywhere else (the first post says that this version would be "forbidden" which is just wrong).

IIRC Germany restricts games that depict violence against humans.

I remember the original Turok game on N64 did the "replace humans and red blood with robots and green blood" thing so that it could be released in Germany.

For the record, we don't know that its only "humans versus hellspawn aliens". Its a fair bet that there is a noticeable amount of human mutilation and probably a bit of human versus human (e.g., headcrab, plagas, traitors, etc).

Yes, that is likely the reason. And in the same way it's because of Americas history, the Americans are so sensitive to male front nudity on TV and in films. Can't really blame them after what they went through, poor bastards.

Wrong. There are boobs all day long on German TV.

Porn starts after midnight though.

Nothing wrong with Boob-Television, many of those boobs have a far higher IQ than the participators in those bloody Reality-Soaps.

More boobs to the people!!!!

Maybe it's the prominent presence of gooey blood to blame. Germany's really streching it with this one me thinks.

Hell yeah! It got better in the last few years, but I remember some movies that were 18+ and still cut, like The Punisher.

That said, I like the publishers "**** it, no release" attitude far more than releasing a censored version.
What I don't understand, afaik every store can sell the game as long as they don't give it any shelve-space/show anything about it in store. But every adult that asks can purchase a copy. Knowing that this game will be very popular with the 360's core audience, young adults, I guess that dedicated gaming stores could sell a non-rated german version if they would release one... But yeah, it doesn't matter, they'll just sell the Austria/Swiss version.

I would like the "**** it, we developed a brutal game, so let's not be surprised that it isn't legal to advertise it during shows that everyone can see" attitude.

I once found a game (don't remember the name) in a big german electronics store which had "This game may not be sold in Germany" printed on the back and was officially sold in that store... :lol a friend of mine bought it right on the spot.

Years ago I bought the SNES version of Mortal Kombat 2 in a toy store, even though the game was already 'indexed'.

An interesting fact about kids shows on TV is that in fights the opponents may not hit each other, so you can imagine how butchered DBZ or Inu Yasha (sp?) are.

What? Where did you get that idea from?

The reason for this institution was basically books like hitler's "mein kampf". Well, not the ratings institution but the one that can index games if the rating people refuse to give it a rating (which is different than the 18+ rating). If they index it, it cannot be openly advertised in stores but still be sold to adults.

I will continue to liberate france in company of heroes from the army both my grandfathers served in no matter what you think, thank you very much. Oh hey, it doesn't have war in the name, guess that solves that.

It's gonna be easy enough to buy it regardless, EU and all.

I don't know what is worse.

Gears of War getting banned in Germany(okay not really).
GAF members trying to impose their views on another country and/or just being retarded.
People that prefer violence over boobs.

I really don't wanna be nitpicky, but ... Gears of War won't be banned in Germany.
