No Man's Sky Spoiler Thread

How come through all the videos we've seen there doesnt seem to be any "cities" filled with intelligent civilizations? There doesnt seem to be any life on these planets outside of "wild life" and the one guy you see who works as a vendor?

In space you see other spaceships and cargo ships, but no space colonies? I guess its not too much of a big deal if that's all there is to it, but eh....

There are no cities. It's a frontier galaxy, so to speak. And it was confirmed a long time ago.

any examples? that was my biggest concern too, and from the streams I've watched they haven't seemed all that different... what kind of stuff was there? feel free to spoiler tag

We've seen waterworlds, deserts with canyons and cacti, lush planets with caves and lakes, rocky lava-radioactive moons, red planets with sand storms (or something like that).

Structure and landscapes were varying too.

And all of this in a couple hours of streaming.

One of the better examples I've seen are for fauna, flora can be a little samey. Although when flora is dense it can get really interesting

My favourite examples:

One planet I saw seemed to have a lot of crab like creatures. At first, I thought they were all the same species - but then I noticed different amounts of legs. And some seemed to have... Arms? And the sizes varied pretty greatly, until basically I realized there were like 6 different crab things on that planet the streamer had run into already. I think i remember in an interview that this was intentional, and I really think it lends some authenticity to the creatures - it gives you the idea of common ancestry.

That same planet also was pretty desert-y and barren on the surface, however, in any caves or covered areas, you'd suddenly have sooooo much flora. Like, a bonkers amount, and a lot of them would glow, and they packed so tight it wasn't so much about any individual plant, but all of the plants and animals creating such a unique looking environment.

I saw a few creatures that I actually can't describe. Like.... My best with one of them was something that seemed to hop/fling itself forward at the same time, and it was like an amorphous-ish blob, I think it had a face? But, I saw it and I 'bought' it. I wasn't like "this is dumb and makes no sense".

Why doesn't Dailymotion vids work on my laptop? I can hear them and even see the picture when I slide through them but nothing shows in the main window. Anyone got a clue what it could be?

I have issues with this site as well, though not in the same context.

When viewing a Daily Motion video with FireFox it seems to use a lot of upstream bandwidth (almost like the videos are P2P)

Doesn't do this with Chrome.

I find it very odd.

That's not "hardcore mode" so much as "broken space suit" mode. You know that a lone interstellar explorer wearing a spacesuit is going to have a locator in his/her suit that will ping back to the ship; it's the only thing you have to truly protect you at any point, so knowing where it is at all times would be priority number one. And the HUD isn't like in COD where it's a weird overlay over what is ostensibly unimpeded vision; it's text projected on to the visor we know your character is wearing. Getting rid of that would truly ruin immersion as it takes away from the feeling that the only thing protecting you from death is a thin piece of glass (or plastic, or whatever the visor is made out of). Admittedly, some HUD elements could be sacrificed (I don't need it telling me "press space to jump), but getting rid of all of it just seems, for lack of a better word, "unrealistic."

Man. You took my post WAY too seriously.

Are there any cool galleries you guys have of the stuff seen in the streams? I think this is one of those games where we'll probably end up having a web app where people vote on the coolest nms pics.

How fast does the in system pulse jump fuel deplete? I haven't caught that yet.

Watching a stream where the guy was going all out fighting sentinels until he got overwhelmed and booked it out to orbit.

Changing the resolution and then changing it back to 720p worked for me.

On a different note, Sean has said they intend to support it if it does well, and it will do well. We'll see balancing of most things, tightening of the fighting mechanic on ground and in space, bug fixes and additional features added over time. This is a game that can continuously grow and offer more to do. As I said before though, I hope when they do that they don't tell us what they've added. I'd just like to stumble across the new stuff.

I saw someone mention buggies earlier on but I think that's difficult, largely because there will be lots of different terrains out there. What I would do, if they add vehicles, is make it a hovercraft. That way they can deal with most terrains without worrying too much, with the added bonus of being able to travel over water.

Watching other streams, I'm trying to observe more about weapons/multi tools.

I'm starting to put together a better image, but one thing I haven't seen is someone finding a new multi-tool - or at least I can't find any images/videos of that right now (still a lot to pore over) does anyone have any memory of someone finding specifically a non-weapon multitool?

I say non weapon because it looks like the game makes a distinction, as there are "weapons terminals" that give you very gun like multi tools. I'm wondering if these things consistently suck at mining, and if there is are other categories of multi tools

Like jack of all trades seems to be what you start with, however is there a 'mining' type? A 'scanning' type?

Havent read this thread or followed much of the leaks.

Are there weapons? Like different guns or whatever you can equip? or do you just upgrade your multi-tool to do more damage to enemies, ect.

Also been on a bit of a blackout.

I heard someone say they saw a knife? "a dagger" ? Any info on that?

It seemed to be a trade item, as in - a 'treasure' item you can trade for extra money. Like al trade items, it could go for more or less in the right star system

Unrealistic? lol

Most of the game operates on theories of what we should be able to do and see in the first place, not facts.

Furthermore, there could be a plethora of sources of interference out there in the universe, both alien and natural, that could cause instruments to not work properly. I personally would like to see a mod or feature that adds procedural interference to different elements of the game.

I don't think I've seen any video where a person browses through various Multitools. Do space stations only sell 1 at a time? I dunno. There's still alot to discover~ And hopefully the hypotheses that there are mining focused multi-tools is true.

Daymeeuhn thinks he figured out why purchasable ships did not improve as he progressed:

Daymeeuhn said:
I actually figured it out. I think it was the same for the multitool all along too. I've been experimenting with it all day and was going to make a post about it when I could confirm.

I thought long and hard about what happened when I started seeing "better" ships, and then it hit me. I had just recently bought a new ship to fix the space station docking bug (it breaks the game). So I tried it again - I bought another new ship - and sure enough after warping to a new system and allowing the game to re-seed new ships, those new ships now were bigger and better yet again.

I bought new multitools many times over the course of my playthrough. I think THAT is what was improving them as I went, and it had nothing to do with center proximity. And it seems the more ships you buy, the better your ship options get. Which kind of makes sense.

My ship is now up to a 7x5 with mostly filled in modules. Will keep buying ships all day until I hit 8x6 for confirmation. Currently sitting in a station waiting for a passerby, because I've been hit with the space station bug again. Can't leave until I get to buy a new ship. Great. Been sitting here for 30 minutes now...

Also, weird thing to note - when you buy a ship, the ship upgrades relatively match the ones you have installed and it affects the price. So if you go ship shopping and want a discount, purge all upgrades off your ship (you'll do this anyway for the resources since you can't take them with you) and load a new system to refresh the ships. When you trade, their ship will be junk now too and much much cheaper. Works like a charm.

So it seems that the game incentives you to replace your ship frequently. That is, until your ship speed spawns max-slot ships.

In another post, he doubled down on listed stats being linked exclusively to upgrades.

Has anyone got any idea how much damage this ONE person's view of the game has done? There are dozens of Youtube channels now telling people it's going to be disappointing, even going as far as to say it's not the game Hello Games promised.

I've watched this person playing the game and he says he likes it and is continuing to play it even though he doesn't do that very often with other games, but it's his critiques of the game that are doing the damage, and some of them are questionable to say the least. It sickens me to think that sales could (and probably will) be affected by ONE man's view who on finishing his rushed playthrough decided to rush out his thoughts without exploring on. Then explored on and found out some of his critiques were incorrect.

Sean Murray and his team have worked there asses off to create something that is groundbreaking and will definitely lead to a new approach to games in the future. I am genuinely angry at this because Hello Games deserve better and deserve every penny they earn. Unfortunately that pay off is likely to be reduced now just because ONE oik wanted his moment in the spotlight and paid a ridiculous amount of money for that to happen.

edit: and there goes another critique. Disgusting.

Once reviews or launch hit, or other early leakers it would have been mostly the same. Just later.

I don't know but for me it had the opposite effect, I went from 'I'll wait for reviews, I'm really not sure about this game' to 'game pre-ordered, can't wait'. I think even it affect initial sales if the game is good people will pick it up eventually.

That's just the way this shit goes man. It happens with most games, especially the ones big enough that copies leak much earlier than reviews.

If we can get to a point where they're no longer beholden to physical retailers, maybe we'll see a day where a leak means they just throw the switch and let everyone play.

People may have read far too much into what this one person has said, especially as he played 30+ hours (and is still playing) and said he liked the game. He gave a pretty balanced view in all honesty, people just took his criticisms too far.

You don't know that at all. Nearly all of the guy's critiques are due to him doing things wrong and his 30 hours to the centre of the first galaxy was due to farming which isn't exactly the in spirit of the game. And 30 hours for a $60 game is seen as great value to most people anyway. The use of 'only' 30 hours is ridiculous.

I don't know but for me it had the opposite effect, I went from 'I'll wait for reviews, I'm really not sure about this game' to 'game pre-ordered, can't wait'. I think even it affect initial sales if the game is good people will pick it up eventually.

If you watched all the footage of the leakers then, yes, but it's his written critique that these sites are running with.

I know but I've never seen a game that so many people want to fail, for whatever reason, although I have a pretty good idea why.

Really good info - and if he's doubling down on the stats bit, then I'll believe him - weapons/ships then probably don't come with base stats. I guess my next line of inquiry would be what I mentioned above - do these different classes of multi-tool (IF they are different classes, it might just be that vendors always call multi-tools weapons) have different effects when combined with upgrades? If not, or if these different classes just don't exist - then it absolutely has to mean that the mining specific upgrades are bugged as fuck, and I'll have to hope for a day 1 patch (as I want to mine the shit out of everything)

HE HAS DEFIED THE WILL OF LORD SEAN

People can play as they like and 30+ hours to get to the centre of your first galaxy is well worth $60, but I can guarantee if you polled all the No Man's Sky fans on this site, 99% of them wouldn't be farming their way to the centre of the first galaxy, they'd be exploring and enjoying everything else this game as to offer. This guy just went from waypoint to waypoint and farmed the hell out of Atlas stones. NOW he's exploring, which tells me a lot about his motives, especially when he reloaded an old save to go back to the first galaxy. It shows that he deliberately rushed and wasn't interested in anything else but finishing.

It was just a matter of wanting to be the first to do it.

Not to mention, HG has said since the beginning that getting to the center was a logical goal and one that many would pursue, but it isn't the only way to play the game.

It's weird that people — and to an extent, Daymeeuhn — are so fixated on ways to speed up that process when that isn't even the stated goal of the game. It's one goal. Obviously it's one that many will do, but really who cares if you can do it somewhat fast?

The streams have probably been good to bring down some of the lofty expectations people had for NMS — myself included — but it is also reasonable to assume that some amount of damage has been done. The narrative of the game coming out has been co-opted (online, anyway) by one dude who basically wanted the rub on some streaming sites. He's kind of playing the martyr, but at the end of the day, he paid stupid money so he could say "first," no matter how reasoned his critique.

He said rushed to center because according his logic best gear is at or near center. When you have best omnitool, suit etc. your experience of exploring and such is a lot smoother. To me that is reasonable reason for rushing to center as most games put best gear to the end point.

Question possibly no one knows the answer to yet: does life vary on a planet? Like if I discover all species in area, get in my ship and go to the other side of the planet, will there be different life?

I think planets will generally be uniform, to encourage traveling between planets and solar systems instead of sticking to one planet.

Then perhaps he should have gone to the next galaxy and continued on instead of telling everyone it was the same as the first galaxy. How many planets did he visit to decide that? I bet it wasn't more than three. It's nonsense. He rushed to finish it and then went back because he felt he might of missed something. A silly concept considering the amount have possible planets, biomes and creatures.

This happened with The Order 1886 and another game... While it was a little warranted with The Order, I don't think it is in all other cases.

From what I have seen, these early leaked copies of games and the feedback they get are worse than any early / day 1 reviews I have seen... And it is usually because of the gaming websites reporting on it, "Man finishes No Man's Sky in 30 Hours" not a single mention that he rushed to finish it.

Hey man... there is billions, BILLIONS missed... can't proceed yet.

If the upgrade system is so un-intuitive that some people think it's bugged, you deserve all the flak you get.

(And it still looks like a bug to me - because deleting weapon mods improved the weapon - back to the state it was in at the start of the game)

He didn't rush it. He said he could have finished the game in 10-15 hours if he had fully exploited the bug and simply rushed towards the center. The 30 hours includes quite a bit of exploration.

Exactly. Why didn't he carry on to find out if things did indeed change. Going back because 'he thought he might have missed something' doesn't sound logical to me.

It is probably due to the linear, or linear-esque mindset that one is used to in most games. This game (with it's 'endless structure') is going to be a new/tough concept to a lot of people.

You see it with the, 'but what do you do?', when things are spelled out to the T in a traditional 'hand holding' fashion.

Are you intentionally twisting his words?

He said he went to next galaxy to see if level of gear would advance, it didn't. It was "more the same" than in first galaxy. He never said he extensively explored planets in 2nd galaxy before decided to rollback his save, because he wants to play and explore near center. Doing that in 1st galaxy is just as viable as in 2nd. Also what it is away from you if he doesn't rush to 2nd to 3rd... galaxy and look for possibility of new shit in them instead of being in 1st?

You might want think that through.

Just for context, there are 18 quintillion planets which is over twice the number of grains of sand in all the deserts of Earth. And we'll call it a day because I already know what you want from this.

I don't think it matters that much.

If it's that great game then all this will be forgotten after release when reviews and everyone else will be praising the game.

Nearly all of the guy's critiques are due to him doing things wrong and his 30 hours to the centre of the first galaxy was due to farming which isn't exactly the in spirit of the game.

Or, and hear me out on this, his critiques are valid because the system is obscure and poorly, if ever, documented. In addition, most of his real critiques revolved around the overall state of the game including bugs and the highly questionable design decisions which allows for quick rushing to the center with easy credit acquisition and free fuel. He hardly farmed anything to get to the center. It was go to space station -> get free warp fuel parts -> warp to atlas station -> get 2 more warp fuel -> go to blackhole -> head towards atlas station or blackhole -> rinse and repeat until at the center. All of that is traveling. There was hardly any farming or resource gathering required.

It shouldn't have had to come to that though. The reviews could well be terrible but it doesn't takaway from the fact ONE man's views should never be able to create a negative like this.

The point is it's ONE man's view and that ONE man's view seems to have been given as much weight by some people as a plethora of legitimate reviews. That's wrong and I'm sure you'll agree.

This is very true. Clinging on both sides to one person's early critiques, mostly fuels the confirmation bias.

What I want from this? Do you mean me? What?

Also what amount of planets in NMS has to do with what leaker wants to do? He rushed to center because he wanted to update his gear before focusing on exploring. Checked 2nd Galaxy if major differences in gear, didn't find any. Decided to explore around center of 1st Galaxy. How this is "wrong way to play"? Because there is more planets out there in galaxy 10 000 0000 0000?
