No Man's Sky Spoiler Thread

I guess the most annoying part is that people will be spending 20-30 hours on the game this weekend, not knowing their progress will be wiped. When you release a physical version on a Monday, a huge amount of people will receive their copy 2-3 days before. I think that's awful treatment of their player base.

When I got the PR email from Sony last night, it mentioned that the universe is getting rebuilt?

"For those users who have obtained early copies of No Man's Sky, their save progress will not carry over to the final game after the universe has been regenerated for launch."
Sounds like it more than just "NAH-NAH-Nah-BOO-BOO!!!". Discoveries can't exist if you're recreating everything.

And let's be honest. It's not the customer's fault that the store sold it early. But just how many of these early purchasers went into this whole thing trying to game on somebody to get an early copy, KNOWING FULL WELL it shouldn't be sold until 8/9. I feel little remorse.

A larger amount of people won't receive it until the 9th. This decision is totally fair to them. The fault lies with those who sold it early. The players should probably read their EULA.

They bought something physical. Of course they should be able enjoy it.

What happened to Jack's quote at the PS4 E3 a few years ago?

"PS4 disc based games won't require you to check in online to play, or have any kind of authentication".

That's why players are able to play right now.

They can still play it, but not with an update. If they want any of the new content they need to restart. If the devs did something like that after game launch, they'd get more shit, but before launch? This sort of thing isn't going to be all that big of a faux pas.

LMAO that's not even relevant though

That quote has nothing to do with anything?

They bought rights to enter a license agreement, caveat emptor.

You don't have to have a connection - it's just highly recommended in order to get the patch. I'm not really sure what point you're even trying to make. It's a very clear situation - day 1 patch or delay. They have to choose one.

Anyway how many people do you know that have a PS4 and literally NO internet access whatsoever? I'm guessing few to none.

How far can you push back the draw distance on Minecraft? That does a similar thing, although with simpler environments.

Minecraft also doesn't really do LODs in the same way NMS does them, so it's a bit more resource intensive the more chunks you load. That said, you can push the view distance out pretty far in Minecraft Windows 10 Edition (which is written in efficient C++).

Here's an example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aGL1qS0qho

Obviously there's a limit, but we have no idea if something like this will be possible in NMS until people start tinkering with it.

Can't believe people are actually complaining about content being wiped

This happens all the time with games

There is just a small contingent of people who can't wrap their head around the fact that we don't live in the SNES / PS1 era anymore, where you could just walk into the store, pick up a physical game and play it immediately without any patches, installs, or downtime whatsoever.

For better or worse, the internet is here to stay and will remain a fundamental part of all software distribution from here to eternity.

Yep. I'd rather have the pop-in, than constantly see the world cutting off with nothing beyond the existing chunks.

My point is that they make the patch sound like a very necessary authentication.

Glad I pre-ordered digital and did not get it early.

Authentication means something different than you think it means. I'm not exactly sure how you're using it, but software requiring authentication means you have to login with an account before you can use it -ie, gmail or Facebook.

You're trying really hard to bridge two different things. A day one patch is not "necessary authentication", especially when it's already well known that the game can be played fully offline.

Tank ship

Did they go in it? Was it really a land cruiser and not some ship that materialized half inside the terrain lol It looks very cool though. I definitely like the chunkier models of ships, like that junker BT was flying for a while.

That's a pretty fine hair to split though. At that point any patches for a game-- say, for The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne, become a "very necessary authentication".

How? It's a day one patch... what makes their day one patch any different from any other day one patch released in the last ten years?

On another note, I'm still surprised by the number of streamers that haven't figured out the inventory transfer. They spend half an hour running around with "Inventory Full" and a reminder right there on the fucking screen that tells them how to clear it out, but they either don't read it or simply refuse to do what it says. I hate watching people play like that.

I can't wait for DSP's run.

Has anyone spotted flowing water?

Not that I've seen. But since I've seen BT uses the game's physics engine to smart use i.e. blast a small crater in the ground and then use it to collect smaller boulders rolling downhill from a larger one he shot. If I find a body of water at a higher elevation on some planet, I'll definitely try digging some sort of irrigation trench and see if it'll flow downstream or simply fill the trench in a static fashion.

The point of this though was not just to say, "look, Minecraft is shit even in C++!", but that pushing out proc gen past a set (performance) boundary is possible if you've got the horsepower for it. We still don't know if the NMS engine scales naturally with CPU and Memory size/bandwidth, so this might all be moot. But if it doesn't scale automatically, there's a HOPE that we'll be able to get under the hood and tinker with these LOD distance values so that this pop-in is less egregious. Still knowing full well it's impossible to completely eliminate it.

I'll try that too,but I'm wondering if it's natural for potential waterfall purposes.

I think Sony is really coming down hard after all the tweets and their official statement to early players / reviewers.

Really curious what this patch is all about and how it influences the game.

You have to look at is sensibly. If they are worried about people seeing an unfinished game with missing features, they would surely publicise a list of said missing features and what is going to be added in this patch. They would be going out of their way to make sure everyone is aware of what is coming.

This is surely damage control for people who may review the game unfavourably before people have rushed out and bought it, the same as their lack of review copies, pure and simple? Before people jump on me, I bought the game, have played and enjoyed it as well.

Yeah true, the lack of "what is in the update" is kind of weird. All seem just like "damaga control". I saw streams alot there is some bug but nothing so much gamebreaking. But they surely dont want to lose score on these bug.

I would like to think that Sean and Co. are going to include an option on PC. That'd be amazing.

It's not a land vehicle, the "wheels" usually look more like the repulsor pads on the hovercraft from The Matrix.

No, I hear ya. And I hope so too!

I mean, if the patch notes are 90% a litany of small bug fixes with a smattering of gameplay tweaks and balances, why would they bother with posting it prior to launch? To placate the small number of people like us on gaming message boards?

Since you have the game and have been playing it, I've a question: Do you feel NMS is a good candidate for a game where, because of its vastness and amount of variety in it that you've experienced first hand, that people that are even a little bit on the fence can easily hold off buying it for a while-- even a long while-- and still get a fresh-off-the-rack, "I'm the only person ever to discover this stuff" feeling from it?

Ahhh. Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. Still pretty fun design though!

It does feel like that, and it seems it has a HUGE scope for discovery. However, what there is to discover is what some people are likely to take issue with, and it may seem extremely repetitive to some as well. You might find that once reviewers and the general gaming public have expressed that underlying gameplay loop and how limited it can be in scope, it may take the shine off the exploration aspect. Does that make any sense?

EDIT: I have to say, from what I have played, this game is more for people who want to relax and don't mind trapsing 10 minutes across a map to discover a 'question mark' location that only holds the same resources as 100 other locations they have already visited, all the time working towards that bigger picture of the journey, game progress and overall goals that they have set themselves. While they walk to that location, planning that once they have what they need, returning to the space station to upgrade weapons, possibly their ship, trade excess stuff off in the galactic market, and then head out to do the same thing again. I find myself in that mood quite a lot, I enjoy MMO end game stuff for example, so I can see the games appeal. However, there will be a hell of a lot of people expecting something different from this, so expect a LOT of backlash.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. Yeah, the moment they (either HG or Sony) didn't put a lock on the scope of "what do you do in NMS?" to help temper expectations, the narrative got away from them and shifted to whatever people wanted to project onto the game, which just sets up many for disappointment if they haven't been following its development closely. I also think HG understands, better than anyone, what their game is and isn't, and is expecting the eventual backlash, but is also confident in the kind of legs a game about exploration and discovery has, especially one with NMS' scope. Your example of MMO end game motivation for continuing to play something well past "finishing it" (however defined) is spot on I think, and I have to imagine that HG took that particular psychology to heart as well when designing NMS.

Put a bunch of hours in and explored about 4 planets. I absolutely love it, it's a wonderful game. Atmospheric, mellow, and full of wonder and personal discovery.

- The survival and resource collecting element is strong, you're constantly making your own goals and working towards them. I felt like I always had a shit-ton to do and keep an eye on.

- I landed on a beautiful tropical planet that was like 70% ocean, but it was radioactive. I barely went swimming at all because my health would drop so rapidly. At one point I looked into a lake and saw a massive eel-like creature swimming about.

- There are huge, mountainous areas to hike around. There are tons of things to discover in the game world, outposts, rare resources and blueprints. It's only your own boredom with a planet's scenery that may move you onwards, not the lack of things to see and do.

- The animals and plants can get WACKY. Saw some wierd-ass upside down fish and a plant that looked like it made out of penises. The game wouldn't let me name it the penis fly trap. :(

- Got the hyperdrive and left the galaxy, but apparently the servers will be reset. :(

- There's copious pop-in when you're in a ship flying over a planet, but I was enjoying it so much I didn't care a huge deal. Hope it gets cleaned up though.

5/5 will play again

So of ALL of these early people getting the game is there no one who has taken a single .png screenshot so far? Every single pic and video has been so horribly compressed it's impossible to tell how the game actually looks. Obviously the colors and art direction are great but goddamn those reddit screens are like postage stamps.

How massive are we talking?

Also, are the monsters hard to kill? I haven't seen much combat, but I'd hope that taking out a giant beast isn't easy.
Depends on your gun, and the monster. I saw this toad from Mario looking motherfucker the other day that would not go down.

Probably...speedboat sized. I've seen elephant sized creatures that are pretty impressive. Nothing enormous yet though.

I couldn't kill anything. I got chased by a carnivore and didn't have a proper blaster so I was just shooting my mining laser. It was super ineffective.
