No seriously, why is my PS4 so goddamn loud?

My PS4 sits on top of my cable box in an open shelf in my entertainment center. Kinda like this one:

Even though the space is open, my system starts to sound like a jet engine after a while. The drawer under that space is full of games, so I've taken to pulling the system out and setting it onto the drawer for long gaming sessions. When I do that, the PS4 remains whisper quiet.

Cable boxes are hot, even if they're off. All you're doing is dumping a bunch of heat into the PS4 chassis that doesn't need to be there.

+1 for silent PS4 here.

I believed there were noise issues with my launch version, so I contacted Sony and they sent me a box to have it repaired. They sent me a new one, or "factory certified replacement" and it sounds about the same.

So I'm assuming that they would've tested the replacement to make sure it was up to specs. I have not contacted them since to discuss the possibility of getting another bad unit.

It's not really worth my time at the moment and I have games I'm playing, so...

After a while of having a disc spin in there, the sound gets loud enough that I need to raise the volume on my TV dramatically.

It doesn't happen with digital titles so I assume it is the fan kicking in to cool down the spinning drive.

I have straight up stopped playing a game to stop the noise.

In the summer it was louder, wasn't like a old fatty PS3 or anything, but now it's a bit cooler I can barely hear it.

Look at the size of the console, think about it's hardware, and then remember that the power supply is internal.

There is your answer.

People saying their PS4 is quiet have obviously never heard an XB1, now that thing is pretty much silent.

My ps4 sits beside the xbone, both are silent. The only time i heard the fans make noise on the ps4 was when the vents had dust blocking them, once that was removed it was silent again.

While doing what? Being idle in the OS or while playing games? Try playing TLOU, Ground Zeroes, First Light or Killzone for at least 15min and report back. I doubt you have a PS4 with a noise level lower than ~ 50dB during one of those games. That's loud. Far too loud. Sony f*cked up when it comes to cooling in the PS4. The heat isn't really an issue, but the damn fan noise. Playing games should be entertaining and not uncomfortable thanks to fan noise.

Because all of the parts are crammed together into a small, slim box. Including the PSU.

Edit: Lol, I didn't even realise that I already posted in this thread a few months ago. XD

The only sound i hear from my ps4 is when i turn it on ;)
No really only in summer when its around 29 degrees in living room (celsius that is ) i hear the fan kicking in. But its in an open squar box on wheels. Used to hear a more anoying sound from my x1 with the coil whine but thats gone too so 2 silent consoles here.
(Netherlands btw). In winter like now its around 20 degrees in living room and i never ever here anything.

I've already posted in this thread but I'm surprised so many think their PS4 is distractingly loud. I mean, Killzone is the game that gets played on mine the most and again, it's definitely audible, but I don't believe it's distractingly loud.

The WiiU is distractingly loud even using a digital game. The Xbox One is creepy silent. If the size of the box is the price to pay to have a console as quiet and cool as the Xbox One, then I'm happy to pay it.

But I think Sony straddled the line well. The PS4 was always going to be hotter and louder than the Xbox One at that size with an internal power supply, but I don't think it's too bad. I think they made a pretty good judgement call on the balance they achieved. I can only imagine how good the PS4 Slim will be. With the Xbox One, I'd be happy with they kept the design and size and just made the power brick internal.

Since it has no games you could play on it, it's like that to remind you it exists.

Heh.

That's either extreme exaggeration or you have an abnormally loud PS4. The PS4 is a pretty noisy console, especially compared to the X1, but it shouldn't be so loud that you can hear it over the sound of your game, or that it takes away enjoyment from your game. That's not right.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I've had a launch PS4, and then the White PS4, and neither of them make any kind of noise like you're describing. I have purchased all of my PS4 titles except Destiny as physical copies, and I have never heard my system sound anywhere close to what you're talking about. Only time I hear it is when it beeps on turn on/wake up from rest mode. I don't think you can make those kind of sweeping statements when it isn't the case across the board. If the system were really 'universally' that loud, it wouldn't be a forum complaint, it'd be a large scale recognized fault of the hardware.

My PS4 and my brother in law's PS4 are both fairly quiet. They have fan noise sure but I can never hear it over the ambient room noise, unlike PS3 phat and 360 DVD drive.

Mine gets really loud during TLOU and some of the menus in AC: Unity. I'll have to check if I've got any dust blocking my vents, but it's definitely noticeable.

I hate loud consoles. It's what put me off the x360 majorly. Sounded like something nearby was about to take off.

Not liking how half the users are reporting silent console and the other are saying it's a rocket. Where's the quality gone. Bad enough the controller thumbstick material wasn't well tested/launch owners not reimbursed/replaced faulty contollers.
Though he does mention it's with framerate unlocked in some games...but I bet it's not limited to that :P

Don't want any of that noise pollution.

So it seems the PS4 is exceptionally loud when playing The Last of Us... from a disc? Digitally there shouldn't be loudness issue? Should try some digital demos to see if its always like this.

Just got a PS4 and the sound is goddamn annoying. ANNOYING! Thinking of hiding the PS4 behind the TV but I don't like the idea of having to do something like this. I mean, I get it when you had to flip a PS1 when its been played out and it doesn't read the discs properly anymore, but having to jump loops with a few days old system is disappointing.

What? I sit literally 3 feet from my system at a desk and have never, not even once, heard it over the sound of a game. Or at all.

I just picked up a new one (the pick 4 bundle) and its noticeably quiter than my launch PS4. The launch one has been the same loudness since launch so it's not dust.

I'm sorry but I really do feel as if you searched Gaf to find something negative about the PS4 so you could bump a dead thread. So you randomly came upon this thread which must have been dozens and dozens of pages back so you could 'make a valid point' while answering a random post. If you'd have bumped this thread because you had a gripe and posted as much I'd have suspected less but the fact you sought out a post to reply to makes me very suspicious.

By the way, I've played TLOUR 4 times on my PS4 (just finished the 4th yesterday) and never heard a peep from my PS4. Oh, and I sit 3 feet from my PS4 when playing.

Seems to be a quality control thing. My first PS4 was loud and I returned it (it also crashed a lot), but my new one is dead silent after installing games.

Could be:

Defect console.
Placement.
Dust build up.
Your hearing is over sensitive.

Seriously, my ps4 is silent.
Placement is open and not in a shelf or closed of.
I keep it dust free, clean the sides etc.
Wont overheat unless your living in a desert or your room has a tropical climate.
More people have silent ps4's than loud one, so you guys must be doing something wrong or the console is defect.

"Half" the users (in quotes because it is still an inflated generalization) on an enthusiast forum where people are more likely to nitpick things. I can tell you from my experience in retail, that I can count the number of complaints I've had from customers, let alone concerns/returns for noise issues on one hand, across our entire district of Best Buy stores. I can't account for the issues people are having, but it doesn't pan out for anything close to a large cross-section of actual affected users.

My launch era PS4 is quiet except when there is a disc in it. Then it is loud until the drive spins down, then back to quiet. It is quieter than my PC, hell even my Wii U with a disc is just as loud.

My launch PS4 was exactly like this, and was really loud on most games and insanely loud on others. It eventually had a network problem so I returned it for a new one about six months ago - the new one is virtually inaudible when gaming. I guess there must be luck involved in which one you get.

I sit right beside my PS4 (I sat beside my PS3 last gen) at my desk with my monitor. If you think the PS4 is loud, try sitting beside an OG PS3 Phat. That fucker is loud as all get out.

White ps4 owner here. It's pretty quiet with the ocassional disc noises under heavy load. My xb1 much quieter (expected seeing as how big it is and how the power supply is outside). Only time my ps4 went loud was when I tried to put it in a vertical position.

I don't think it's a nitpick though. It's a problem, a nasty one. Some are apparently working fine too...

Yeah, "half" was a bit BS, true, but there are way, way WAY too many reports of it for me to pretend like the chances of running into it are low.

I know people are more likely to complain about anything when discussing anything, especially on the internet...but at the same time I care more about what the average gaffer has to say than Tom, Dick and Earl Pleb - they've left me hanging with framerate etc already.
Although I imagine noise would bother more people...maybe they're used to it coming from the x360 :P
