No seriously, why is my PS4 so goddamn loud?

is yours sitting vertically without the stand by chance? if so, it blocks off the side fan and it has to work twice as hard to cool the system. if you sit it horiziontally its a lot quieter in my experience.

That's either extreme exaggeration or you have an abnormally loud PS4. The PS4 is a pretty noisy console, especially compared to the X1, but it shouldn't be so loud that you can hear it over the sound of your game, or that it takes away enjoyment from your game. That's not right.
On my fourth one which came directly from Sony after sending my third one in to them.
Even changed the thermal paste myself since they themselves can't keep their promise of a PS4 being quieter than a PS3 at all times. Managed to lower the noise level between 5-10dB by doing so. It reaching over 50dB in TLOU is utter crap. This is also the quietest one of all four of them. So no exaggeration at all. Ventilation is not an issue on my side. Plenty of space. Keeping it horizontal as well. They just went with a really bad fan. The size of the console isn't an issue either. It's twice the size of a gaming laptop which sounds as much if not less.

@knerl - You lose the warranty replacing the thermal paste of course?

I wonder if people can replace the fan themselves...

If it's just a bad fan though...and people mention they're playing the same games should there really be such a difference with some people not having any noise issues... when you've heard a console in jet noise mode...you don't forget how it sounds and how worrying/annoying it is. There probably isn't a huge variation in noise level recognition on average like there is with things like framerate, even if different levels annoy people differently...a jet sound is something baad.

Compared to my Xbox One, my PS4 is slightly louder but not loud enough to warrant any annoyance. Could be a faulty PS4 or I just have a better tolerance to the loudness.

Even with the stand it's still loud when the console is under heavy load. I've not the space to put it horizontally though thanks to how large the Xbox One is.

I've just learned to live with the noise, like I did with the PS3 slim before it.

I'd rather see thread titles that aren't so declarative in a statement that simply isn't true for a lot of people.

My PS4 is much quieter than my PS3 and my PS3 was a pretty quiet console.

I haven't had much time to experience how loud the one I own is (I turned it on to download PvZ and turned it off). However, my friend purchased the TLOU Blackfriday bundle (same as me) and his is whisper quiet. I wonder if perhaps different components?

My launch ps3 was whisper quiet, so is my white original slim and my launch PS4. I sit a meter away from them. The only thing that makes sounds is the initial disc use in games.

I'm sorry but I really do feel as if you searched Gaf to find something negative about the PS4 so you could bump a dead thread. So you randomly came upon this thread which must have been dozens and dozens of pages back so you could 'make a valid point' while answering a random post. If you'd have bumped this thread because you had a gripe and posted as much I'd have suspected less but the fact you sought out a post to reply to makes me very suspicious.

By the way, I've played TLOUR 4 times on my PS4 (just finished the 4th yesterday) and never heard a peep from my PS4. Oh, and I sit 3 feet from my PS4 when playing.

Why would you care? Why would I care? Was actually looking for a similar thread, but about the Wii U. Found this and replied. It's a big issue that Sony needs to deal with. Hence someone needs to keep the objective reports alive. I really doubt you never heard a peep from yours unless you have really bad hearing. Been through four of them myself and I've seen a lot of the same complaints floating around everywhere. It really is a lottery whether you get a quiet one or not. That is one that's quiet at all times like it should be. Three of mine were of the latest CUH-11xx model.

i have noticed my white ps4 is more quiet with disc-based games than downloadable versions. it is somewhat loud but it doesnt bother me that much.

Mine is silent when not spinning a disc, but when it does it's so loud I can hear it on the floor below. Glad it doesn't last so long.

Whine sounds are usually unbalanced fans, due to dust or just bad parts. But a whine will carry louder than its actual loudness. It's not just the pure volume but the character of the sound.

OP I would give the fans a good shot of canned air, or failing that maybe swap out the fan for a high quality one (still very cheap) as a possible fix.

Disc based games will be a lot louder as they install for the first bit but that goes away of course.

When playing digital content my PS4 is nearly silent.

When it is initially started up it is a little loud but then quiets right down.

My PS4 is loud, it bothers me since my PS3 slim is so fucking quiet :/ Actually i'm kinda pissed about it. Mine is horizontal and with a lot of breathing room.

My PS4 runs silently, and it gets at least a few hours of use every day for Netflix, physical games, and digital games. Mostly Destiny, but Shadowfall, Infamous SS, The Evil Within, and Alien Isolation are the other possibly demanding titles that I've gotten around to.

Only noise there might be is the disk for physical games upon launching the game.

Now the OG PS3...that's a loud system.

I sit substantially closer to my PC when I play games(PC/PS4 respectively) than I do PS4, and I notice the PS4 noise more so I'm not sure what you're getting at.

He probably has a crazy loud GPU, CPU fans and a case with no sound absorbers :P

I've had that, or a mixture of those.

It's pretty bad. Almost as bad as the rocket x360 my friend has.

I sit like 30cm from my PC now and it's sexy quiet unless the game is insane and pushes my 780ti really hard.

Got one last week and it's pretty damned loud. Even while just running Netflix. And it seems to really struggle with certain blu-rays. One of my Zatoichi discs errored out on the first try. The rest of them took almost a minute before I could start them.

Should I get it replaced while I still can?

Yes. I replaced my insanely loud PS4 for an unrelated problem and now I have a whisper quiet model :)

depends on games really

Killzone SF and TLOU made it louder (drowned in TV still), rest of games don't even make it sweat a little

Mine is considerably loud.. But after the 360 and the PS3 last gen, it's great.

Of course, it comes nowhere close to the dead silent Xbox One,, but considering the internal PSU and size, Sony did a good job.

I have a launch PS4, and the first time I ever heard the fan ramp up was with Far Cry 4 recently as we moved into summer. It's pretty hot and humid here right now(usually over 30 deg C and ~90% humidity), so I'm not surprised the fan is kicking into overdrive.
My PS4 sits in an open-shelf entertainment unit so ventilation is not an issue.

It's not that loud that it bothers me, but it's noticeable of course.

Lol, trollin.

I replaced the thermal paste and pads in my launch PS4 the other day which was surprisingly easy to do, it had a fair amount of dust in it for over a year of almost constant running.
I can probably say that it has made it slightly quieter when it idles on the menu and I have noticed it ramps the fans down a lot faster after coming out of a game when the system is under stress.
Just for reference I have my PS4 upright using the official stand and it's probably less than a metre away on the computer desk, next to screen I use to play on.

I just bought my PS4 on Christmas and I can't hear anything. I've been playing destiny which is disk based and I can't hear a single thing. But my buddies PS4 makes a shit load of noise. I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones.

It doesn't matter, mine is super loud horizontally too, I think some consoles is just louder than others, it was the same thing with PS3 fat. It's annoying to hear that the problem is still there on the new consoles too though, mine is a launch system so I always thought it was loud because it was the first batch. :/

I would have preferred a PS4 that was twice as big and half as loud. Thankfully I have the Gold Wireless headphones so I don't have to hear the fan much while playing, but it doesn't save me from the noise during movies.

My PS4 gets incredibly loud on The Last of US Remastered but on every other game it's almost silent.

I had one of the loud ones purchased at launch. Although it was quiet most of the time, some games like Infamous Second Son would cause it to get annoyingly loud after a few minutes of play. To solve this problem, I cut a hole in the wall behind the entertainment center, and a corresponding hole in the wall in the room behind it (the study). I bought a couple grommets and then ran the wires through the wall. The PS4 now sits on a small table in the study and I can play whatever I want and I never have to hear the fans blowing. I put my gaming PC in the other room as well, not because of noise but because it was so large and wouldn't fit in the cabinet. So this solution is working out well for me.

During movies? My PS4 sounds like a hair dryer when playing games but it's very quiet when playing Blu-rays or at the dashboard.

maybe i'm lucky, but i've had exactly ZERO problems with my ps4 (and my ps3 last gen). Thumbsticks, in working order. No slow PSN. Messages work fine. Can barely tell it's on.

Unless playing TLoU Remastered or InFamous in 40c temperatures with little ventilation, it should be completely silent. At least it is for me. I've only ever heard my PS4 when it didn't have much ventilation and it was around mid-July and I was playing one of those two games...

Never really notice any noise, but I lived through the noise of a refurbished 360 pro in the winter so that could attribute to why I don't notice any noise.
