No Wii U version planned for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

I guess you haven't played ps2 in a while?

also mh4 doesn't have underwater combat. it's perfectly playable without the 2nd stick. Using the target camera is more than sufficient.

Im looking at screenshots of Monster Hunter 1 and most of the monsters look nearly the same. Unless you can find me clearer screens that disprove it, but either way, they're still pretty much using PS2 assets.

Also, "sufficient" isn't really what I'm looking for when I discuss controls. Good controls is usually what I'd prefer. Yknow? Good? They put proper lock-on in the iOS version, why not this one?

Some off screen footage and impressions from E3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9omiQpjJw0

It looks GUD.

... My, my. That DOES look gud. Very gud indeed. It looks as good as 3U on 3DS, if not better. 4U looks better than 4, that's for sure. Oh, and Gore Magala looks WAY cooler and more fun than Lagiacrus.

Look at the volcano of 1 and prepare to baulk. Also, here is a comparison:

It doesn't, of course.

Is it a lie, though? They certainly look like the PS2 assets.
MH4U is still in development, I really hope it supports lock-on, it's the next step of target-camera. :(

And yes, that's a lie, boot a PS2 with MH and you will see it with your own eyes, the forest map alone will probably blind you permanently.

I still haven't bought MH3U yet. Still can't get over the no Wii remote/nunchuck control options. It was the most comfortable way to play for me.

Well, this is a shame...I would really rather have the title on the Wii U, since I'm already conditioned for using my Classic Controller Pro for all of my hunting. It's difficult as it is hunting without that, I can only imagine it feeling even more difficult on the 3DS. I don't have a 3DS at the moment, so I guess it could still work out, but I'd really like to have full control over movement, camera, and inventory in the same manner I do right now.

I can always just hold on hope that they'll reconsider in the future...until then, I will continue to hunt in 3U as usual. Still, this is a bummer.

capcom should have thought this through after the good sales of MH3U Wii U, only way to make them realize their mistake is to make noise people.

400x200 resolution picture to prove a point about graphical improvements in 2014. We're through the looking glass here. At least post a picture of the Rathian model from each generation or something.

If you compare models, you can see that they made a new one for Monster Hunter Tri (improved, but still years behind the then-state-of-the-art, obviously) but it doesn't really show because of the shitty IQ and resolution of the Wii/3DS, the added details in the textures only really show up in the WiiU version.

Also as a sidenote, the thing about the "PS2-level assets" complaint doesn't only extend to the low poly character of the models. Movesets and animations... let's just say they're extremely familiar. Even the Chinese MMO spin-off - while looking a generation or two ahead from the mainline game graphically - isn't safe from that criticism, btw. They must find the balance between making Rathian and her moveset recognisable to fans yet update the graphics and animation quality to reflect modern standards compared to years ago.

Given the amount of criticism Capcom's facing right now from people inside and outside the fanbase... I think it's fair to say they haven't done as good a job as they could have.

edit: actually, it might be more appropriate to call the Monster Hunter Tri and 4 assets "Wii level assets", which probably sounds nicer and is more accurate... but in practice and considering the Wii's power, it's pretty much comparable complaining about "PS2 level assets".

From Joystiq:

"In a manner of speaking, all the things you could do with those two versions (3DS and Wii U) previously, you can now do in this one version,"]
I was really tempted to speak my mind about the state of Japanese development and Capcom internally that would make it even possible to consider it's ok to make such a statement, but it'd probably get me banned, so I won't.

I'm salty as fuck right now reading that shit. Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining, Tsujimoto.

Firstly, sorry about the images. I'm on mobile, so I can't really see the difference.

Secondly, I largely agree with you. A revamp of the textures would be entirely welcome, really. I was merely saying that there HAVE been improvements... Albeit not as many as there should be. In spite of this, I am yet to not enjoy a Monster Hunter game, but I do hope they change things up a little. Otherwise, 4 may be the last one I like.

In any case, there were only 3 returning large monsters for Tri, and their AIs, well... Suffice to say, I played Freedom Unite rather recently for the hell of it, and fighting Rathalos was awful. They improved on it a lot. This level of change should happen between every Monster Hunter game, on a larger scale.

Still, this game should be fun. I'm just worried about 5 being more of the same, because that would go from "Staying true to the series" to "taking the piss a little". Seeing as it's Capcom, though, well...

Yeah, I think we're largely on the same page here!

I think I've just reached the "Capcom's taking the piss" stage before you did (and it makes me mad!) - you're more patient and forgiving with the company than I am. :D

If i'm coming across as brash and cynical in my posts it's because they're a reflection of my sadness, disappointment and frustration as a Monster Hunter fan with how Capcom has [mis]handled the series recently.

Yah, it's alright. As much as I still find Capcom's IPs to have a certain form of charm that appeals to me, I admit the company itself is extremely shady, unreliable, and rather greed-driven. I understand your cynicism. I'm rather new to giving a damn about the companies as well as the games, though, so I guess it's because i'm yet to truly notice and experience their horrors. :c

This is gonna be my first Monster Hunter.

When is it out in Europe?

Same as Americaland, early 2015. Seeing as i've been looking forward to it since Monster Hunter 4 was announced, though, it's taking way too long for me~

On the one hand, I'm as annoyed as anyone at how long they held the series back from HD consoles, slow or nonexistent localizations, etc. On the other hand...it's Capcom. It could be worse. A lot worse.

I was honestly shocked when they confirmed a localizaton of MH4G immediately instead of making us wait two years again.

I personally love MH and everything about it. It's quite honestly my favorite game series ever. Capcom however... Well I've honestly expected MH to have paid DLC and pay to win stuff by now and I'm fully prepared to just abandon ship if it reaches that point

Screw Capcom

So sad. Probably won't end up playing this even though I put 400 hours into MH3U. I think this is a mistake on Capcom's part, and I am certain MH3U on Wii U did well enough to warrant the limited resources it would take to port this game to Wii U.

I don't know. 3DS currently has about a 45+ million install base worldwide.

Capcom must hate the idea of people comfortably playing Monster Hunter games. They always focus on handhelds that cause carpal tunnel.

I do that and then I gotta clean it off with a microfiber to get the fingerprint off, plus I risk scratching the screen. No thanks.

Haha dude give me a break. This comes off like a joke post, you're more likely to scratch the touch screen with the stylus than you are wiping it off with a cloth designed for wiping off screens.

Yes, I do so love everything about Monster Hunter, too. I originally bought the very first one as "the other game" to Timesplitters back when I was a youngin, because I liked the cover. And it turned out to be possibly my favourite game series ever, really. I was not expecting that~ And I damned nearly gave up on it because I found the Great Sword to be too hard to use. But then I found the Sword and Shield, and loved the game ever since!

I also am... Somewhat surprised that (to us Western gamers, anyway) Capcom has largely avoided shitting on Monster Hunter. I'm afraid that this will be the calm before the storm, but i'm still pleased that we got at least 4 great games (with plenty of excellent, utterly beneficial expansions too) before it becomes a bit icky with FTP shite, and the like.

On a side note, has anyone else noticed that there's a gradually increasing story element added to each game? In the first game, you were literally a hunter in some village with fields around it. In the second game, you got knocked down a mountainside, bruised up a lot, nursed back to health, and then worked for a village. In the third game, you were called to a village because they suspect that a monster is causing earthquakes that could potentially prove fatal, so you have to eventually hunt it
and it turns out you've got the wrong monster, and that you should think BIGGER
. In the fourth game, well... You are a part of a travelling caravan, looking for the origin of an extremely hard, valuable monster scale that you are in possession of, and there is a monster which is causing havoc with the ecosystems, spreading a powerful frenzy-inducing virus... Which sounds genuinely interesting.

Maybe they'll actually bother to add voice acting one day?

Figured as much Capcom. Sad though. I really love playing 3U on WiiU, I barely touch it on the 3ds but the save transfer is great.

Actually it's more that the JPN crowd has made it clear that they prefer them there.
It really sucks that vita is a no go for monster Hunter since a vita tv would solve this for some folks. I can see why they are skipping the Wii u though with the vast majority of their sales being on portable why waste time to release a game that will make a small profit. Same reason you won't see it on vita as well though so good times I guess.

I'll never prefer a hand held experience overa console one. Playing on my huge HD tvis fast more preferable then playing ona tiny low resolution screen. Controls would also be better on console.

This is pretty disappointing as a mh fan.

Capcom is spending hundreds of millions trying to appeal to a worldwide audience with so many of their other franchises and ill-advised ideas yet neglect the international Monster Hunter audience with insultingly late ports and a blatant disregard for system preferences (I'd like to see it on WiiU because I own one, but they could release it on any console and I'd be fine with it).

I really feel like this should one of those "vote with your wallet" things, but not sure I can miss out on some good monster hunting.

The 'vote with your wallet' thing is exactly why Capcom is focusing on a 3DS version first :P The vocal cries here about a preference for WiiU did not reflect in actual sales.

Been playing Monster Hunter since the first one. Always preferred the console versions over the handheld ones. Big screen playing is just a better experience for my lifestyle. My friends and I much rather lug our WiiU's and a monitor to each others house instead of just bringing our 3DS's to play.

You're stealth port begging.

We all know where it will end up, and what agenda you're pushing with this post.
Everyone in this damn thread is port begging.

The thread practically requires it. Almost everyone would rather have this on a console (ANY console) rather than 3DS exclusive.

er, but it did reflect in sales, I dont know how much the 3DS version sold, but capcom has went on record and publically with pride said that the Wii U version has sold 500,000 copies worldwide, and this was like last year, so that number has even gone up, not only that, MH3U has benefited alot from the youtube community where channels like the game grumps made a miniseries out of it
