Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

I wonder how well this card does at 4k. I am thinking about a 4k monitor in the future.

I got my GTX 1070 along with my 4K IPS panel to play in native 4K. While it struggles to play some of the newest games in 4K, I can usually turn down a few settings to maintain 60fps.

If you want to crank everything to Ultra, it can do 4K/30 on the most demanding titles. You can get closer to 60 if you don't mind turning down some settings.

It should be able to do 4K/60 on less demanding and older titles.

If you want 4K/60 Ultra on everything right now, you've got to shell out $1,300 for the big bad Titan X.

Really popular, great warranty.
I've heard that their models might have some coil whine but I think that's only because they're popular and the issue is not really widespread.
huh, good to know. im debating getting either that EVGA or the G1 gaming, but knowing EVGA can actually be good, the difference of almost 400 BRL seems ridiculous. would the difference on clock speeds be that significant?

I'd say its pretty negligible difference, and you can OC the EVGA manually, should have no difficulties reaching same clocks as G1, but if you don't want to that and want the best out of box performance G1 Gaming could be a good choice. Definitely not worth that much though, 400 BRL is 100 euros? Just OC manually if you ever need more power, I'm fairly sure you'll be quite happy for a good time with the stock EVGA, though depending on your resolution/fps needs.
yeah, basically 100 euros. really thinking of pulling the trigger on the EVGA then, seeing they have a better representation here in brazil too, in case something happens. thanks for helping.

That sounds good enough.

Makes sense, but I don't spend 1k on a gpu, so yeah, 1070 it is.=p

What do you mean by that?=O

Titan XP won't be enough for 4K@60fps everywhere. It's quite often goes below 60 in 4K even in games which don't use MSAA. You'll have to lower the settings considerably to have 60 in 4K everywhere.

IMO, it's too early for 4K monitors at the moment. GPUs aren't fast enough yet as even a $1200 videocard can't pull off stable 60 fps there.

Damn, well, as long as there's a way to get 60FPS often with some settings turned down that's fine by me.

4k with 60 fps on ultra settings seems really hard to do. I'm just gonna wait for the 1170s personally. I think that will be the 4k card

Anyone with a Gigabyte card use their extreme gaming software? Ever since the anniversary update, it has been slightly bugged for me where it will hold on to part of the background and not display correctly. Difficult to explain so hopefully the screenshot linked below shows what I'm talking about well enough. Was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue.

Saw a couple below $400 this week, but man I did not expect the average price to stay this high for this long. My decision to get that $399 Windforce back in like July is looking better and better.

With no competition there's no incentive to lower the price.

Really curious about the Volta line-up next year, myself. My 1070 is serving me well at the moment in 4K or 1440p (sweet spot for a lot of games).

I would hope that essentially any game that came out in the PS3/360 era would be able to max it out at 4k. I'd be happy with that.

Any MSI Gaming X 1070 users here? I can get it for a good price in my country, and the reviews are amazing. How is it, does it have coil whine?

My first one died and had to be sent back, but the second one is going strong. Both of them have been perfectly silent, even while gaming.

So I picked up a hard copy AC Unity for $8 (comes with 5 discs). It runs surprisingly well on my 1070/6600k setup. Gameplay at 1440p with everything on aside from PCSS is almost at a flawless 60fps. It looks absolutely ridiculous, especially the interiors. Cutscene performance is dreadful, but that seems to be the case with a lot of modern games. Pop in is also horrendous even after the patches, and somehow there is no population density setting.

Is there a guaranteed way I don't get the Micron GDDR5?
In the market now... :P

Not likely, unless you plug in the card and run gpuz. For what I've seen you have more chances on getting micron if you buy MSI or Gigabyte. If I were you, get an EVGA. Great support, most of them are Samsung, and you got 90 days if you wish to step up to a better card (like the 1080 or if a 1080 ti comes out in the future) by just se ding in your card and paying the difference. Just my 2 cents.

Hmmm... Do most of the cards have coil whine?

Maybe I'll sit and wait for a bit... :|

Undervolting successful! :D

The card is very silent, never exceeds 75°C, voltages fluctuate between 850-950mV and it now boosts to 2000-2050mhz, I will try to give my memory a slight boost later.

What problems were you having?

I didn't have any problems actually but a friends GPU inspired me to try this. He runs a R9 390 in a mini-ITX case which frequently hit 85°C during summer, I eventually solved this by undervolting his card by 81mV. The card ran still at the same clockspeeds 100% stable but lost almost 10°C and a whole load of noise so I wondered if I can drain a few mV on my 1070 to offset the cheaper cooler and give me a bit more boost-potential. Turns out I could and it also solved the 83°C in Overwatch that kept nagging me without adding more noise :D

Ah, sounds like you got good results then.

Is 2050 core 4120 memory a good overclock for the msi gaming x card? It's the best I can get with full power limit unlinked from temps and no voltage adjustment without Firestrike crashing. In afterburner it says +90/+120.

I'm not sure if I want to play with voltages or if it's worth it.

Pretty ok if you have the Micron Memory I would say.

Alright boyz I will try here.

I have a problem with shadowplay. I record for around 10min and, sometimes, it freezes at 7-9min mark for about 6 seconds WHILE the sound keeps playing.

I have no lag whatsoever, I have no CPU high temps whatsoever, I did do a fresh windows installl ( its a fresh pc) with display driver uninstaller, I tried geforce experience 2.0 and 3.0, still same issue, I tried to put 3d nvidia settings on performance, stil same issue, I have cpu oveclocked to 4.4ghz, 16gb ram, 1070gtx.

There are more people at reddit with same problem, we tried giving feedback to nvidia, no one is giving any help so far.
I tried SSD to SSD temp and save, I tried SSD temp and HDD save.

People that use Shadowplay longer than me say that it happened in Windows 10 Anniversary.
I was wondering if anyone could test out some 10 minutes records and check at 7-10min mark for freezes.
Sure I can fix it by only saving 6min OR by saving 15min and actually delaying the alt +f10 for some minutes to make sure my content is not broken but it's kinda weird, we seem to be a minority, but it's there.

This is annoying considering my PC is new.
I have a nvidia forum thread and reddit thread if anyone wishes to know more.

Any ideas?

I wish I could get an equivalent of my current Palit Super Jetstream just with Samsung Memory... Buying later didn't pay off...

Ugh, I was so going to buy a 1070, now I have to wait... :(
Will wait until I can get a non-Micron GDDR5.

Seems Micron units have the coil whine too... :|

It seems newer Asus, GB, MSI and EVGA 1070's are on Micron,
so there's no getting away from it.

Ah, sounds like you got good results then.

Yeah, in Rainbow Six Siege it barely breaks 60-65°C now :D But I found out my 1070 doesn't like memory overclocking at all D: It might be related to the undervolting but even a mere +200mhz makes it unstable :/

Then you should be able to gain much more on the memory. Run some kind of benchmark and always increase the memory clock by 10 while still having the benchmark open until you are seeing some artifacts.

Firestrike crashes if I increase the memory beyond +120. No artifacting. The program just quits and says "test run was ended by user" or something like that.
