Ah, I misread. Okay, that works.
Nvidia restricts voltage so hard that it really doesn't matter. It's volt-modding that's dangerous. Turning up the voltage slider just increases heat a little, though Maxwell and Pascal can be weird; sometimes increasing voltage actually makes overclocks less stable for those architectures.

Did some tuning last night and was able to push my FE to +205 core clock and +550 memory clock before I started seeing artifacts in stress tests. Bought The Witcher 3 on Steam Sale just to see what the performance is like. Also, coil whine is only an issue if I turn vsync off, which I never do. And the fan noise is still barely noticeable even at max load.
Overall, really great upgrade from my G1 970. Very happy and I'll be sticking with this card.

You can completely max out TW3 at 1080p for sure.
What clock was the G1 running at, and i mean clocks not offsets.

Yup. Upgraded to 16gb last week for like $50.
1080 is overkill for 1080p gaming for now, but it'd keep you from having to upgrade for longer.

With an MSI Gaming X or something that has predetermined factory OC levels like Gaming mode and OC mode, do those have an impact on manual overclocking?
What I mean is, if I want to install Afterburner and go for 2000 MHz, does it make a difference if I am currently set to gaming clocks? Like, does what mode I'm in determine what the "base" clock Afterburner will be modifying is?

The 1080 is about 20% faster than the 1070 on average, for a pretty significant jump in cost. I'd just get the 1070 and save the money personally.

I haven't tried overclocking it yet but from what I understand, all FE cards are the same. So the EVGA 1070 FE is no different from the ASUS, or the Gigabyte, or the MSI.
So here is my max stable OC in Firestrike with my FE 1070, Nvidia packaging version from Best Buy.
19,727 graphics score. I would imagine an aftermarket board would allow you to more easily break 20,000, but I wouldn't think you'd get much more. Seems even the aftermarket cards are having a hard time getting past 2100mhz. My card is not being temp throttled at all, but is hitting power limits. I have not seen the card even got into the 70s at load. Most I have seen in GPUz is 69 C. Fan curve is aggressive, though, and has hit as high as 82% fan curve to keep it that cool, but I don't think it's really all that loud in my living room. Typical fan speeds are 40-60% for gaming, but benching will put it up to 70s-low 80s occasionally. While gaming the fan is not very loud at all. No coil whine I can hear.
Does break 2,000mhz, but GPUz log suggests in games it likes to stay just below 2000 with some jumps above. Max seems to be about 2,077ish for my FE in Firestrike. Tried going to 9,000mhz memory and that crashed firestrike pretty hard. Sticking with +700mhz memory so 8,700 memory. Having a hard time believing peoples 9000+ mem clocks are stable.
For reference my other rig with a 980ti G1 gaming will do 21000+ firestrike.
Played the witcher 3 4k Completely maxed at 30+ fps, which seems to be about 1080 level performance. Overall I'd say the 1070 is a good value given the performance.

I'm in the same boat. My case is in rough condition but it was either upgrading my 760 or upgrading my case, and maybe mobo + CPU. Went for graphics card. Case will come next.

Haven't done PC gaming in a long time...GAF, any recommendations from the Steam sale that's under $5 that can show off the card...? I picked up a 3d shmup/STG/bullet-hell game called 'Astebreed' from there for $4.49 earlier today, looks really great.

Have you got Tomb Raider 2013 - while im a bit meh on the gameplay, the vanilla game still looks stunning. I imagine the GOTY version looks better though im not sure.
Ryse Son of Rome is another good looking game, but I haven't played it.
I think they are both $5 each.
Uh that's weird. My 1070G1 isn't recognising both my TV and my screen at the same time. The screen is connected via hdmi to the card's HDMI slot and the TV via HDMI to the card's DVI slot using a DVI-HDMI adapter. I've been using the same setup for a couple of years now and it worked fine on both my HD5850 and GTX970. Not sure what's up with this 1070. I haven't spent much time trying to figure out what's wrong yet though.

Also this thread reminded me that RAM is very cheap, and so I upped on another 8gb of the ram I have. going from a 560ti with 8gb of ram to 1070 with 16 oh baby, can't wait!

You don't need a special monitor to take advantage of resolutions beyond 1080. I have a 1080p IPS panel from HP, nothing super special, but my preferred resolution for games is 1440p or 1620p. Downsampling is fantastic for image quality, it's the same reason CG films look so clean - render at a higher resolution than you're displaying at.
Uggggggh, the wait for my 1070 is killing me. It's not getting here until Wednesday
I feel ya. I'm kind of "mad" at Newegg even though I have no reason to be. I'm so used to just getting stuff in 2 days from them that when they actual deliver on the estimated date I'm almost surprised. They've done nothing wrong but of all the things I'd love to get early... the 1070 is highest on the list!

So stuck on the fence between 1070 & 1080, will be un the US on holiday over the next few weeks and was planning on getting a 1080 (coming from UK). I'll be saving money either way, 1080 is probably overkill as I'll be running on a 1080p gsync monitor but I was thinking about cranking up the res a down sampling.... man...
A 1440p or 1620p downsample is pretty great on a 1080p panel. Unless you have money to burn I would get a 1070, it's more than adequate for those resolutions.
GTX 1080 is 20% more performance for about 55 - 60% more cost. Up to you to decide if that's worth it to you personally, no right or wrong answer.
a) you have the performance headroom
b) it's the best AA solution, bar none. Most post-processing AA leaves plenty of visible aliasing, downsampling helps reduce this and stabilize the image. Here's a comparison between 1080 native and 4k downsampled to 1080 - big difference which is even bigger in motion.
Obviously playing at native res is still viable if you need the performance, but if you can afford it, there are appreciable benefits to downsampling to 1080p from higher resolutions.

I've got an EVGA GTX970 and I game at 1080p60/High settings. I'm content here and don't plan to move until 4K is mainstream.
Question I have is, is the jump to the GTX 1070 large enough to justify the cost? In the back of my head, I'm always reminded of the 3.5/0.5GB partition on my 970 and with games like Battlefield 1, Watch Dogs 2, and others on the horizon, I'm mildly concerned.
My main thing is, my 970's been a great performer and I haven't had any serious performance issues, but dat 8GB of unadulterated dedodated WAM is incredibly tempting.

I'd maybe look at seeing if you can sell your 970 and then see how much the jump to a 1070 would cost you? They're going for about $200 used on Ebay. I'm not an expert, but the games on the horizon seem like the 970 would start struggling with running them maxed out (if you care about that.) Or you can wait for the next Nvidia cards. Your 970 could last you till then I imagine, though maybe not always at max settings.

My guess would be that's probably a mix of how many other people also pre-ordered ahead of you and when they expect to have it in stock.
Consensus I'm getting is that a 2500K should still be good. Mine is oc'd to 4.6. Have you tried pushing yours a little further? I sat on 4.5 for years, but last night I bumped up to 4.6, ran some tests, and found 4.6 to be stable (4.7 was too much, though).
Mind you, no two 2500Ks are the same, but your oc seems fairly mild, unless you're on a stock cooler?

Same, but I ordered the card past business hours on Friday and Newegg doesn't work on weekends. It's only like 8:24AM there right now so I suspect they are just getting to work.

Assume this is without backplate too.
Is there any negatives for not having a backplate? It reduces the sagging as far as I know but does it help with temperatures or anything?
This will be louder though, right? None of their marketing language there deals with silence/noice, so I have to assume that's not a selling point here.

A lot of backplates are just aesthetic but a metal backplate installed in the right way can act as a sort of heatsink for heat coming off the back of the GPU die.
How good is the MSI Aero card? Is it worth buying that over a other card that has a different cooler?
