Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

Aww yisssss. I'm in for a fun night.

Hell yeah Shiner.

Does Gigabyte have good customer support? I've been with EVGA for a while now and never had any problems. That $399 card from Gigabyte will be my first card from them.

Currently have this in my cart. Is $429.99 a normal price for this or will it be coming down a bit?

No one really knows when the $379.99 price will actually happen. $399 has been the lowest the 1070 has gotten to.

Eff it. I'm tired of waiting. This will be my first pc build. Now it's time to pick out the rest of the system.

Received our MSI FE 1070 yesterday finally after numerous shipping delays. Everything we've been throwing at it via the Vive has been nearly flawless; the middle schoolers in our program are losing their goddamn minds with VR. It's great.

I'm not even sure what a 379 1070 will be with the founders at 449.

The 399 gigabyte looks to have a good fan on it. Worth the extra 20 dollars over msrp.

My MSI Gaming x 1070 at newegg has been "packaging" for five hours. Have I entered newegg order hell?

It will go through. Mine took a full day of packaging (overnight, that is) and my card arrived today. Gotta say, it was well-packaged.

Generally speaking, Newegg doesn't really do "order hell." However they run their stock system it works really, really well. I've almost never heard of someone having an order cancelled when it says it went through. Items becoming sold out before payment is finished - that's another matter - but generally if it says the order was successful, it was.

Yep, Newegg's always been awesome with their checkout and stock system. Plus, their packaging is always top notch! Can't say the same about Amazon's packaging...

Gigabyte G1 Gaming in stock at Newegg right now.

I got one and like it a lot so far. Had my heart set on the Asus Strix but Newegg hasn't even ever received any stock on it yet and I got tired of waiting. My card boosts straight to 2GHz without me having to do anything, which is nice and it's super quiet while gaming too. I also like the fact that the card doesn't protrude an inch or more beyond the bracket width-wise like a lot of cards do, it can be a problem if you have a fan on the side panel of your case.

Want to purchase it badly but life duties are telling me not to do it. Instead...I took the $500 and paid on a credit card bill.

I'll join you all soon. I promise. I'm sad.

I'm in the same boat and starting a little savings fund for it with 300$ saved so far. Ill probably pick one up in a week or two during a hopefully more saturated market. In the meanwhile ill be living my dreams through the people of this thread and picking out a new monitor.

We are now identical. I'm looking for an upgrade in that department myself. I'm rocking an older Ben-Q and ASUS back from '09. Always been a console gamer until Play Anywhere was announced.

Anyone recommend a great monitor (around $500) to use with the 1070?

I recently ordered this Acer G257HU for its great value at $280 USD: 25" 2560x1440 IPS 60 Hz.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6113&cm_re=acer_g257hu-_-24-009-728-_-Product

Here's one short review that shows that it's a pretty good monitor with great colour accuracy:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2483192,00.asp

I considered going for high refresh rate but I absolutely wanted IPS. Getting both IPS and high refresh rate pushes the price way up. Given that most of them are 1440p and the GTX 1070, although mostly staying at or above 60 fps, wouldn't be able to maintain 100+ fps anyway to make use of the increased refresh rate, you'd also want G-Sync. That increases the price even more to a point that I just couldn't justify it.

Given those considerations, I went and bought this significantly cheaper monitor which will tied me over until OLED and high refresh IPS monitors are so much cheaper and when new video cards come out that can render future games at 100+ fps reliably. Maybe Nvidia will support Free Sync by then too (ha).

Does anyone know when the Gigabyte Xtreme 1070's are going to be coming out? I've looked around and haven't really seen much. But the clock speeds are higher than either of their variants currently offering

That feeling when you get a new graphics card and then realize all the really graphically demanding games kind of suck.

except The Witcher III

it's here! excited.

Congrats! thats the one im getting!

Hey man, you did the right thing. Don't feel bad. If it makes you feel any better I went from thinking about getting a 1080 to a 1070 to save $200.

No they're probably going to be really limited if the other manufacturers are anything to go by. Are you going to flash the BIOS to change the voltage to get a higher overclock? If not you may as well go with any of the other cheaper variants of the 1070 as they all get to around 2000Mhz because of the voltage lock.

I've been building computers since about 95/96 and I can honestly say i've never once overclocked anything. Haven't even looked up how to do it lol

GOGOGO

I just plugged this in and been running smooth so far!

I don't know if I really want to know the answer, but...
It's worth the upgrade from a GTX 970? Any consensus from the media and reviews?

The main reason I upgraded was the VRAM, but the 50%+ increase in performance isn't bad at all. That said, if you're fine with what you have right now just keep the 970, especially on 1080p. With a few exceptions, it's pretty overkill at 1080p for now.

At this time I'm playing everything at 1080p on my monitor and a bigger TV, I don't have any 4K device and my PC is doing an awesome job (i7 4790K, 32GB RAM, SSD), but that ~50% of extra performance is very tempting.

So, go for it? Or maybe wait for true 4K60 gaming with the GTX 1170/1180 and upgrade my TV and monitor?

You won't get 4k60 with a 1070 unless I'm mistaken.

Something is DEFINITELY wrong with my G1 card. It's just been getting worse and worse the more I play it.

Just booted up Dark Souls III and am getting lower FPS than I was on my 780. 1440p at ~25 FPS? What the fuck?

The card is CONSTANTLY at 100% GPU usage when any game is running. Temps are ice cold, like 50 C maximum.

2500k at 4.5 GHz and 8 GB RAM. I don't know why the card is behaving so fucking weird.

Edit: Yeah just tried Witcher III. When I first booted up with the new card I got 1440p / Ultra / 60 FPS. Without changing ANY settings it now decides to run at ~30 FPS, 3 hours later. Terrible!

In that case, the Xtreme version isn't going to have any better performance than say the G1 which should be a fair bit cheaper maybe $30-50 cheaper. But check some reviews.

If you're gaming at 1080, the 970 can probably last you until the next generation of cards at least. If you're at a higher res you could probably sell the 970 and get a 1070 for ~$200. Comes down to your needs really.

The MSI Gaming X clock modes listed on newegg seem to be way off.

Core Clock
1607 MHz (OC Mode)
1582 MHz (Gaming Mode)
1506 MHz (Silent Mode)
Boost Clock
1797 MHz (OC Mode)
1771 MHz (Gaming Mode)
1683 MHz (Silent Mode)

From my experience, using MSI App, all 3 core clock modes are set to 1582 MHz.
And OC Mode's boost clock is actually 1961 MHz.

That's good enough that I probably won't worry about the fact that Afterburner is broken on my system. I may just update the bios to default clocks to OC mode and disable the MSI App.

In that case, the Xtreme version isn't going to have any better performance than say the G1 which should be a fair bit cheaper maybe $30-50 cheaper. But check some reviews.

The Xtreme version doesn't auto OC? The thing I read said that it's OC setting was 220mhz faster than stock

OK I'm stupid all the downclocking from before was apparently the result of the GPU entering safe mode following a too-ambitious overclock. I have.... little experience overclocking, obviously. Reboot fixed it.

anyone with Zotac GTX 1070 AMP, can you please try changing the LED visualizer to red or yellow? mine can't show those colors.

Thanks!

Hmm yeah looking for demanding games here also . I got Crysis 3 guess its decent ? Maxed out Crysis 3 is really really pretty though . Think I will get Metro LL from Steam .

What's the core clock when you're seeing 100% gpu usage, poor fps and 50C?

The Xtreme will be a little faster than the G1 out of the box. But if you install either the Gigabyte Overclocking Software or MSI Afterburner, you can adjust some sliders yourself and see how far you can overclock it. It's really basic, and its just about impossible to blow your card up, cause there's only so far the sliders let you increase the power limit.

The G1 clocks are -

Boost: 1822 MHz/ Base: 1620 MHz in OC Mode
Boost: 1784 MHz/ Base: 1594 MHz in Gaming Mode

The Xtreme clocks are -

Boost: 1898 MHz / Base: 1695 MHz in OC mode
Boost: 1873 MHz / Base: 1670 MHz in Gaming mode

So in OC mode on both of them the Xtreme version is 76Mhz faster or roughly 4% faster.

However like I said, you can download the overclocking software and adjust some sliders to boost the clock speeds. Most people are getting 2000Mhz across all brands of 1070. That's faster than the Xtreme. A lot of reviews say that the card is voltage locked so it can't get any higher than 2000-2100Mhz on air coolers. 2200Mhz on water cooled is the fastest I've read so far.

The Xtreme does have a slightly better cooler than the G1, have a second BIOS, and an extra 8 pin plug for better power delivery, but if you are not going to use a custom BIOS you won't really be taking advantage of it.

If you just want to plug and play and put the fastest 1070 into your machine, get the Xtreme, but I just wanted to let you know you can get pretty good performance out of the G1 and probably the Windforce one as well. I'm not expecting much difference between the G1 and Windforce too and the Windforce is $30 cheaper than the G1.

EDIT: Xtreme version also comes with some extra HDMI ports for the front of your case, very awesome if you have a VR headset.

Thanks a ton for your response. This makes a ton of sense and I think I'll just got with one of the cheaper models!
(This is the reason i love gaf so much. Devil is in the details and people here don't skimp on them!)

No prob! As always check out some reviews, even the youtube guys like Jayztwocents, linustechtips are very helpful as a starting point.

It was like 900-something. Figured it out though, I did an unstable overclock and the GPU reverted to safe mode. Rebooting fixed it, seems fine now. Still getting slightly lower performance than reviews indicate but I think that's due to my 2500k and 8 GB RAM.

Holy shit though Doom FLIES on this thing. 2880 x 1620, all maxed out with 8x TXAA, averages around 90 FPS.
