I like the sound of that!!!Its far and away the cheapest 1070 I have seen.
Check what active 3D processes you have running when you have the issue. You can do with either within the driver (look in the top menu of the CPL for "show 3D processes" or something) or AB (click on the "i" in the main window and scroll down a bit). Try killing them and check if the card downclocks normally after that.
One 144Hz display shouldn't cause this. It's also nearly impossible that a properly setup AB would cause this.
I've figured out what's causing it. Well, three things. Eventually, Calculator, Movies & TV, and Settings will appear in my background processes in Task Manager. Not sure why, as I have them set in Privacy/Background apps to not run in the background. As soon as I end all three tasks, my card downclocks.
So now I have to figure out WHY these apps start running in the background in the first place.
Edit: Disabling the Superfetch service in Windows prevents those apps from starting, but I don't know yet if it's a bad idea to disable that service or not.
They shouldn't affect the card's clock in any case. Do you have the card on Optimal or Adaptive power setting btw?
I have it set to maximum performance. I booted earlier today using both optimal and adaptive, and the problem persisted.
I created a thread on Nvidia's forums to see if anyone else is having this issue, or knows of a solution that doesn't involve disabling SuperFetch.
Edit: Yikes. Turns out it was the maximum performance setting that was doing it. I could have swore I messed with those settings and found nothing worked.
This is the usual error I've seen many times already. Some people seem to blindly recommend setting the card to maximum performance mode on forums and in guides which usually mean that the card won't downclock, ever. In fact, you should only use maximum performance mode for those titles which work better with it - in my experience it's mostly OpenGL titles (id's games) and some DX titles running in borderless window only. For these titles you may try setting maximum performance in the corresponding app profile. The global power mode is best to be leaved at default optimal setting however.
I believe it should be fine, the 2 x PCIE means that the card will plug into one but span two slots in terms of size.
The Gaming X will have a better spec set of fans on it, so better noise and cooling.
MSI are excellent. I've got EVGA and can recommend that. I just put a Gigabyte 1060 into my dad's box and that is fine too. Pick one of those.
Ah. Sounds good.. Yeah, it's just difficult to know. My old card makes a super loud noise when I turn on the machine, and while it does chug along, I don't think it's doing too well.I don't think the Armour would be crappy, it just doesn't have the latest in the Twin Frozr series of fans.
I've noted that there are a lot of varying editions that all seem the same on the surface. Some are usually pre-overclocked and sometimes can contain better heatsink solutions, but I think the gains in performance, volume and cooling are going to be minimal. It's like there are about 4 flavours of the EVGA cards!
From what I've seen, Palit and Gainward are cheap and cheerful, and not necessarily good. Lots of people get Zotac but I have seen complaints about some of the fans behaviour over on overclockers.co.uk. MSI, EVGA and Gigabyte, I really have seen little to suggest any bad feeling. ASUS, I have though, with many saying that ASUS are great for motherboards, bad for graphics cards.
And then there are the reference designs, which we can all put in the bin.
EDIT:
You're right about power though, I can see from the picture of it that it wants both an 8 pin and a 6 pin going into it. For what its worth, my EVGA SC only wants the one 8 pin and came with a nice 6 to 8 converter in the box.
Any consensus on which brand of gtx 1070s are reliable or having better success with?
Been looking around but cant decide.
My dads 1060 gigabyte didn't have an adapter but it's literally £2 on your order, so stick it on to be safe.
My journey with cards was a baptism of fire. I got a cheap 4850 that had no fan control. On or off. Awful. The 4890 I traded it for was a noise monster! From that point onwards, I always checked in on sound stats. It does seem that everything is pretty reasonable nowadays in terms of noise, so well done card manufacturers!
Noticed my new EVGA 1070 FTW wasn't downclocking at idle. A hint from the Geforce forums (specifically about today's new driver) lead me to discover that MSI Afterburner was conflicting with the card and preventing it from idling.
I installed EVGA Precision and it seems to have fixed the problem. Anything I should know about this program, other than that it's ridiculous I needed to provide name, email and serial number to use it? Can I expect similar performance to Afterburner?
Edit: Okay, nevermind then! Getting same results with Precision. Something in my system is causing the gpu to stop downclocking about 5 minutes into a fresh boot. The gpu is downclocked until that point.
Edit 2: Uninstalled Precision just to check, and same result. Anyone know what could be forcing the GPU to not idle? Is it because I'm on a 144hz monitor?
Mine won't downclock either. Not sure wtf is up
edit: I'm using max performance too, but changing it does nothing. Do I need to reboot?
Finally bought the Palit Super Jetstream yesterday. Near silent card. Just disappointed that I got Micron Memory which in my case doesn't overclock as well as other GTX 1070 in reviews. Only achieved +250 there. GPU clock goes up to 2088 MHz tho. Seems ok.
My Gainward GLH has Samsung memory, but I'm not interested in OC yet, since pretty much every game runs at 120+ fps @1080p with minor tweaks.
I want to check how much is possible though.
If I want to get a card with Samsung memory, how do I ensure that?
Decided to get a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming. Reviews seemed pretty solid all around. Anyone else have this card?

Has an annoying noise when the fans are off and there's a chance it uses Micron memory. Not that great of a card to be honest.
Noticed I have the same problem with my Micron VRAM... and I found this thread in the Nvidia forums with people having the same problem: https://forums.geforce.com/default/...os-bug-in-micron-memory-1070-cards-/?offset=4 We're not alone on this.Recently installed a MSI 1070 Gaming X and I seem to be experiencing the same thing described in this thread:
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=409087
I've been able to get my memory up to +500 while Valley or Witcher 3 are running and not see any artifacts or anything. The problem is that if I try to set it above about +280 on the memory immediately after a cold boot, I get a gnarly checkerboard pattern + hard freeze and either a reboot or a BSOD (video_scheduler_internal_error usually, sometimes dpc watchdog)
This led to a situation where the settings kept being applied at boot, causing one of those two things to happen seconds after seeing the desktop, which required me to boot into safe mode and edit the afterburner .cfg in order to be able to do anything
This is the first time i've ever actually put any effort into overclocking a video card so I could use some advice here. Should I RMA the card or is this maybe a issue with windows or afterburner or something? I haven't tried anything other than afterburner (latest version, 4.3.0 beta 4)
Crikey didn't realise so many overclocked their GPUs. Is this for gaming performance or just the fun of it?

I'm totally happy* with the performance of my new MSI 1070 as is,
*Amazed even.
Just buy the cheapest one, waste of money imo.Decided to get a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming. Reviews seemed pretty solid all around. Anyone else have this card?
Yep, much easier than OCing a cpu as well...though OCing the cpu still helps a lot of course!!!It's because it's so easy and so safe to do. Why leave that extra performance on the table?

Yeah overclock your 1070 the 5% it lets you. woo

Any good safe guide for that 5% overclock? Most guides I check seem to aim for the "impossible", I'd rather just have safe stable smaller overclock.
Is it worth overclocking a 1070 FTW edition?
what's the opinion on the evga 1070? http://www.evga.com/products/Product.aspx?pn=08G-P4-6171-KR
never really bought evga stuff, but i hear good things about them, and they're way cheaper here in brazil, compared to other branded cards.
Absolutely! I have my core clock set to 1725 and my memory at 2202. I could likely push it even further but I'm happy with the results. Samsung memory, by the way.

I don't know exactly that was wrong with the Micron memory (early?) MSI Gaming X card use(d), because mine has Micron memory and the card runs 100% stable at 2050 mhz core and +250 mhz on the memory, I haven't tried overclocking further yet, I basically did it only out of curiosity, I don't really overclock the GPU at all, because the card is fast enough for everything I do. Today I played Doom, at 1080p with all settings on ultra, and the framerate was between 130 and 170 fps all the time, without manually overclocking the card. Good enough for me![]()
Edit: No coil whine either on my card.
I caved and got a 1070 FTW this week.
It runs everything so well...except for Deus Ex Mankind Divided, which still requires me to turn some settings down. Seems like that is a resource hog compared to just about any other game I try on it. 1440p for what it's worth.
I have no idea what coil whine sounds like so I dunno if mine has it or not.![]()
