Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

Firestrike crashes if I increase the memory beyond +120. No artifacting. The program just quits and says "test run was ended by user" or something like that.

Oh well, seems you didn't get lucky in the silicon lottery. :(

Actually I'm not sure if it's really a lottery, blly can you test something?

First launch a demanding game and while the game is running overclock the memory, then launch Firestrike and after the test started exit the game and see if Firestrike still quits.

The sole problem with Micron memory 1070's seems to be that, once you overclock the memory the voltage won't be amped up fast enough for it but if the voltages are already at high levels due to a game running the memory runs just fine even overclocked.

is this limited to 1070's? About to buy a 1080 but will hold off if this is issue is also on them.

Only 1070s. 1080s GDDR5X was always Micron.

He said he has Samsung memory tho. :/

This thread is like reading a horror story about these micron chips. I'm glad I have a 1080, its micron but it seems like the 1080 was built for micron.

Undervolting successful! :D

The card is very silent, never exceeds 75°C, voltages fluctuate between 850-950mV and it now boosts to 2000-2050mhz, I will try to give my memory a slight boost later.

How do you undervolt the GPU? Just move the power limit slider to the left?

Which is the best in quietness and temps outside of the MSI 1070? I also want to avoid micron as well.

I was pretty much set to buy a 1070 but this micron shit has put me off the MSI, so many reports of that card.

My MSI 970 has been great, maybe I should wait? Haven't really followed the 1070/1080 reviews and I don't see much of a detailed roundup of AIB. Looked at three sites and you quickly go back to the FE back in June, seems no one gives a fuck now to test AIB cards or I'm looking in the wrong places.

Palit Jetstream/Gamerock or Gainward Phoenix Cards. I think newer cards are all Micron memory. You have to be lucky with getting old stock if you want Samsung memory. Maybe from some not so popular shop.

what issue?

Other than coil wine, I'm curious about the exact details of the issue. Is the complaint they just don't overclock as well? That can't be classified as an issue so long as things work at the advertised frequency. Is there something more than that?

It is the overclocking. For Pascal, the biggest increase in performance seems to be memory overclocking since the core overclocks/boost all amount to about the same (in the 1900-2100 range unless you win the silicon lottery). It's kinda crappy to pay $50-100+ more over the base model and get absolutely no performance increase. Some of these cards advertising are based on how well they are supposed to overclock like the EVGA FTW Edition with increased power phases, Zoltac Amp Extreme, etc.

What's really lame is the Micron situation could potentially be solved with a corrected firmware/bios update but Nvidia/board partners have does nothing about it so far.

My MSI 1070 with Micron memory ran stable at 2050 mhz without any throttling when I tried overclocking just for the heck of it, haven't tried overclocking further. I run stock speeds on the card, it's crazy fast as it is. In fact, it's so fast that I often get dizzy playing GTA V on max settings, because it is TOO fast. Never happened with the 970. I believe this is really a non-issue unless you think you need to squeeze every single mhz out of your graphics card because you might get one more frame per second at 4k or something.

Edit: tried memory +200 mhz, worked fine. Could try more, but don't see a reason to.

Would this card be okay to run on a PCIe 2.0 (x16)? I read it wouldn't be noticeable. I am trying to see if I can only update my GPU since the 1070 is very attractive.

I wish I could get an equivalent of my current Palit Super Jetstream just with Samsung Memory... Buying later didn't pay off...

I was wondering what all the hub bub about Samsung memory was. I just checked and my Gigabyte G1 gaming has Samsung memory. I haven't pushed memory clocks, but I did push the core to 2050 without touching power at all.

I did a quick Google to confirm, but PCIe 2.0 will be fine. What CPU?

Guys/Gals, I'm trying to decide which gtx 1070 I'll get, but I don't know some stuff...

I was ready to buy an evga founder's edition, but I read a bit that the blower version is loud and it gets pretty hot...

I live in a tropical country (Brazil) and the weather is really hot, so...

Which model should I get? I don't plan to overlock it, at least not right now, with the summer coming in 3 months...

Somebody save me! :D please >_<

PS. I'm upgrading from a gtx 680 =p

Gigabyte 1070 dual fan

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007709 601202919

$399, two fans and full size heat sink. The other $399 cards are smaller and even a single fan. I think three fans is over kill

Go for the Gigabyte G1 Gaming if you can it has great cooling and is priced nice compared to similar 1070s: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125871

That's a good alternative but keep in mind that that model sticks out about an inch over the bracket width-wise which can be an issue if your case isn't wide enough or if you have a fan on your side panel. The G1 Gaming is almost flush with the bracket.

I mean even if you can get 9000mhz out of the memory, you aren't going to see that much of an fps boost vs like 8250-8500. My card does 2000-2100 and 9200 and it really only gives you like a 10% boost in firestrike/timespy scores, so a less aggressive overclock should net you at least 5-7% of the 10-15% you might get with a more aggressive overclock. It's really not that big of a deal. Basically talking about a theoretical 5% performance "loss" if you can call it that.

Oh, thanks for the quick reply!

I had a very bad gigabyte experience in the past, so I dunno if I would get anythong from them again =(

And here they are known for having the worst components and the gpu just dies after the warranty period =p

i7 870 (4 cores @ 2.9GHz). For some reason, My CPU is showing that is it running at 3.5GHz. I didn't OC it.
I am hoping the CPU can work with an 1070 as well as I don't want to get into an expensive dominoes-effect upgrading.

Thanks. The Gainward Phoenix and Palit Gamerock cards look like a really good alternatives for the price. Same cooler and company.

I had a GTX 580 Gainward phantom which was really good.

Welp, the new promo is for Gears of War 4...

Looks like I'm holding out longer unless there's a solid price drop or rebate since I have no interest in that and the whole Micron overclocking issue isn't helping matters.

i posted the other day about my msi gaming x 1070 not being able to overclock over +90/120 without firestrike crashing. i downloaded 3d mark again and it seems to be updated with "Time Spy" which renders in 1440p and is DirectX12.

i've now got my overclock to +100/350. so maybe it was a problem with the previous directx11 version, i don't know. i'm going to keep overclocking to see how far i can get.

Man, US prices are awesome. I am trying to decide between the Gigabyte Gaming G1 and the MSI Gaming X. Silent and powerful would be my preference. Any advice?

Between those 2 I would pick MSI.

So I just purchased my EVGA gtx 1070

I upgraded from a gtx 660

My cpu is i5 2500k

16gb ram

I'm not that blown away so far so I'm thinking something maybe wrong?

I uninstalled the 660 drivers before i installed the 1070 and installed the new 1070 drivers.

In overwatch, the fps will never go higher than 59 for some reason even tho I set all settings to low (wtf)
when I set it on ultra, it will run like 55-59 and then sometimes drop to like 30ish.

average like 30-40 fps ultra settings at 1680-1050

My 3dmark score was 3823 for firestrike ultra.

is something wrong? I set power management mode to prefer maximum performance but everything is still the same.

Yep, there is something off about that.

Whats the good word purchasing a 1070?

I was looking to get the MSI Gaming X but I saw the discussion about the "micron" and kind of nervous picking up any cards right now.

So I got my EVGA 1070 SC and it's got the Micron memory of doom.

If I don't plan on overclocking how big a deal is this?

Won't make a difference in all likelihood if you aren't overlocking. From what I've read it looks like Micron is more common than Samsung on 1070s.

After finishing my build and now everything has been running for month, I have my MSI Armor at +120 Core and +400 Memory and that seems stable so far but I didn't want to push it too far because of the issue.

Interesting to read that the Micron issue seems to come from a possible voltage problem and there is an apparent work around, so I might try the solution below to try and push my OC higher.

If the card is idling at the 300mv level when you click apply to overclock the vram from default levels to somewhere in the range of +400 to +500, The Micron memory cards will produce checkerboard artifacts and either crash the driver or create a video scheduler BSOD. If you lock the voltage in Afterburner first, then you can quite easily run +500 to +600 mhz offset overclocks without the card crashing.

I got my evga gtx 1070 sc yesterday and OMFG Doom looks and plays great omg!

On ultra, I get 140+ fps in closed areas, and it looks sick! (on asus 144hz led)

Though, playing the witcher 3, with all settings on max, there are several fps drops, and it's hard to keep 60 fps while in 1080p, and I'm using the newest nvidia drivers...

I have 8gb ddr and an I5 4690k, maybe it can be the cpu/ram?
