Obama announces support for same-sex marriage

So when I was posting here actively a few years back, there was this gay libertarian called Gaborn who was always attacking Obama on GLBT issues. His signature argument was that half-measures like civil unions were actually detrimental to the cause, because they'd give the illusion of progress while institutionalizing inequality.

A lot of posters at the time figured he was being disingenuous in an attempt to avoid giving any credit to Democratic politicians, because he disagreed with their economics policies. I chose to give him the benefit of the doubt; even if I didn't agree, I figure gay folks are entitled to get mad at foot-dragging.

Now that Obama's announced his support for completely equal marriage, I'd expect Gaborn to be full of praise, since this is what he said he wanted, over and over. Of course, if those other posters were right and he was just playing the fanboy role, he'd find a way to complain about this too.

So how about it? Does he still post here? What's going on with that guy?

He definitely still posts here. I am sort of curious to hear what he has to say

Are you guys joking? His comment is on the first page.

I don't think Shep is an amazing reporter or anything, but considering the state of Fox News, I have to commend him for continuing not to get sucked into the fucked up nature of that organization. He manages to at least avoid the hyperbole.

No, I only read the first post. That's usually how I do it - I read the first post, post my comments, THEN read the topic.

But his comment is hilarious and definitely makes me a little "hmm" on the subject of Gaborn, especially since he continues to support Ron Paul, whose stance on the issue is Draconian compared to Obama's now

Contrary to what most people on here are posting within the last few pages, this could hurt him more than help him. Not only were the Republicans using the Obama Care bill as a rallying call to rile up the conservative base, now they can point to this "war on marriage" as a point to raise enthusiasm. Additionally, while Obama has had a firm hold on the African-American and Latino votes, the subject of gay marriage is not a popular one within those communities who still have a great deal of faith-based morals. This could be a mistake for him with large latino populations in Arizona, and Florida. It could also hurt him in North Carolina who just voted 61% in favor of the furthering it's ban, and in Ohio, a midwest state with a large religious base. Also, don't forget that the North Carolina amendment that was passed yesterday grew from African-American churches opposed to the topic.

Let me quote myself:

Exactly which social conservatives are we concerned about being swayed here? African-Americans and Latinos, who have voted for years in large majorities for Democrats who they know are more socially liberal than they are themselves?

African Americans and Latinos may be socially conservative and thus more likely to back marriage bans when they're on the ballot. But when it comes to races for elected office, they simply don't vote based on social issues the way, say, white evangelicals do.

Indeed, church attendance has been called the main cause of black voters' support for Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage.

But the truth is actually reversed. Focused far more on job creation, health care and education than on gay marriage, black voters aren't supporting conservative candidates simply because they oppose LGBT rights. Instead, they are voting for progressive pro-LGBT candidates — despite disagreeing with their pro-LGBT platforms.

"The truth is, we just don't see blacks voting against a candidate based on [his or her] support of gay marriage," says Patrick Egan, assistant professor of politics and public policy at New York University. "We actually don't see this becoming an important issue for voters of any race."

We should all take a moment this sunday and tip our 40s to the Prezzy’s equally horrible other half, Michelle — better known in the movie community as Chewbacca. (Seriously, get some side-by-side pics on your screens and grab yoself some pop-kern, yo! You can’t make that sizzle up, fool!

Anyway, how soon till he pimps out white house bricks for an oz of herb? “brick fo a brick” sounds catchy. You think we could get him to wear some gold teef that read “for sale”? Or maybe a sticker on his forehead that says “This ass is read.”

Such a hack…at everything he does.

It's so easy to fall down the rabbit hole of ignorant comments.

Romney just now said, about his belief that marriage is between a man and a woman: "That's the belief I've had since - well, since I started running for office."

HAHAHA

I notice a lot of comments in this thread do not relate to how this was the right thing to do, but how it pertains to his reelection chances.

A little sad, but I can see that it's an important part of the discussion.

Everyone knows it's an awesome thing and the right thing to do, the interesting discussion is how it will move the polls.

Did he really just say that? What was his belief before he started running for office? That marriage is between a man, a woman, a woman, a woman, and a woman?

Shepard Smith says GOP on "the wrong side of history"

I really don't know how Shep stands to be on that network.
I think a part of him enjoys being one of the black sheep. He can talk crap about what they air and totally get away with it. Some of the zingers he gets to say on live TV, on FOX no less, are hilarious.
Him mocking Glenn Beck's crying was comedy gold.

If you're arguing it's political by pointing to the results in NC that doesn't make any sense because if you look at the results, then it would be easier to win NC with his "evolving" line.
It's not about playing numbers; it's about focusing media attention on him. (Though I'm sure someone ran the numbers before he decided to do this.) It's about getting headlines for taking a stand against a notable, very public bigotry in recent memory. Whether a bunch of people disagree with his stance or not is immaterial; he's doing it because he's going to come out looking noble.

Unfortunately, the state of American politics is that you have to "play the game". You will NEVER AGAIN see an American president that hasn't made completely politically calculated moves every step of the way.

Your only goal is to figure out who is the lesser of the available evils.
Yeah, I know. I'm way more jaded and bitter than I should be for only being in my mid-30's, but this is exactly why.

My conservative father who owns a flower shop in Connecticut:

"Fucking hell that Obama, now if the gays can get married everywhere we don't get the wedding business from the rest of the country"

Thanks, Dad. Always the practical one
(he's half joking).

Today is a good day.

Gaborn and Fox behaving as expected.

I don't know about that.

Oh, nm.

Pretty much.

1) Rumors are, Shep is gay

2) His numbers are too high for them to fire him, but

3) Most people that work for Fox News are pro-marriage equality

Just reposting here so everybody knows that this happened:

Un. fucking. believable. It was up for ~15 minutes.

"If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you'll never learn."

Did you actually see it? Some people are claming it's a photoshop.

Dude.

DUDE!

The fact that he can use this as a strategy to GET VOTES is fucking AMAZING.

America fuck ya?
The fact that supporting gay marriage can now be used as a wedge issue to WIN voters speaks for itself, really. This would have been unthinkable in 2004.

"Rumours are, Shep is gay"

Source please? I hate when people say "rumours are" or something, especially when it's about someone's sexual preference, because it's all gossip mongering.

The thing about Foxnews website is that their news articles are really copy/pasta from ABC and other outlets; they just edit the headline, sometimes in an inflammatory way.

A little sad, but I can see that it's an important part of the discussion.

That's how my thoughts have been going.

"Oh shit, this is amazing, he really said it! This is great!"
...
"Wait, this might be bad and that makes me sad in many ways."

If he hasn't done it before, why would he do it now?

This whole time, I don't understand why he hasn't been open about it. Why would homophobes vote for him, anyway? If he's worried about older blacks, what else are they gonna do? Vote for Romney?

The fact that we're even contemplating to possibility that the US president could lose his re-election because he says--not passing any laws; just saying it--a group of Americans that pay their taxes, serve in the military, etc.. should be be granted equal protection and rights is damn sad.

Goold old Obama. must be feeling the heat in the polls.

Its about time but coming from him its nothing but a worthless political move.

Because he wants to let them fire him. Shep will have no problem at all finding a job at another network. Just trolling them hard.

He's about the only thing on FOX News that they can continually point to to demonstrate that they are a legitimate "balanced" news organization. So they give him his time slot to shit on Fox News, knowing they have the other 23 hours of the say to spew forth their agenda narrative.

The actual picture on Foxnews is amazing. Not Obama. He's doing his typical Obama sort of want thing. But the inset, with the two gay guys getting married? A couple of silver foxes, one in a blue shirt with a pink tie and the other in a pink shirt with a blue tie. Fucking fab.

The Log Cabin Republicans issued the following statement on news of President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage:

“That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous,” said R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. “Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late to be of any use to the people of North Carolina, or any of the other states that have addressed this issue on his watch. This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain as much as anybody, and after his campaign’s ridiculous contortions to deny support for marriage equality this week he does not deserve praise for an announcement that comes a day late and a dollar short.”

And I thought no one could possibly come up with a worse response than Gaborn

yes he's a monster.

first got rid of don't ask don't tell
then gave more people health care
now openly supports gay marriage IN AMERICA as a sitting president.

I'm sure there's other shit he did, I heard the stimulus is actually working as well?

actually what are this guys faults? did more shit than bush so far.

I love it when haters say 'he's just a politician'.

If he gets another term and then actually does something about the gay rights thing in US, I will enjoy reading gaf on that day.

of course he's a politician. ITS POLITICS.

I don't think so. It was more of a result of his "evolving" position becoming untenable, and pressure mounted, given Biden's remarks last Sunday, for him to either step up or step down.
