Obduction |OT| Explore, uncover, solve, decide in a Mysterious world

change the c to a k and the name means autopsy in my language. Enough to make me have zero interest in this game.

What a silly post. Did you know, if you change the "y" to "i" in Myst, it becomes Mist, which is German for manure, rubbish, crap. Didn't stop Germans from playing the game...

PS: obduction used to mean autopsy in English, too.
 
If you change the first letter to A it's abduction so I guess we all better apply for a refund right now because clearly there are bad things happening here.

On a more serious note Steamspy is showing only ~10k owners so far. Its obviously still early but this was an unusually quiet launch for a game of this caliber.

Wait a week or two before even looking at Steamspy. The numbers are far less reliable at the beginning.

Honestly, I'd like to see Steamspy automatically hide new ownership data until the game has been out for two weeks.

Love the progression from disoriented to making connections in the world and gaining an understanding of your surroundings through observations and puzzles and breadcrumbs of story. I always liked the pitch for the game but did not expect them to be so successful at creating a spiritual successor to Myst, hitting all the notes you want without feeling like a retread or a relic.

Yes, it's actually quite impressive it's doing so well considering the lack of marketing. Consistently in top 3 on steam, number 1 on GOG. Nice to see the support for the game, which I think will grow.

In many ways it's a perfect fit for today's game industry. Atmospheric exploratory games with minimalist exposition and not much emphasis on violence are a popular trend now, when they weren't really in the heyday of the Myst series. In that regard the series was ahead of its time.
 
this game would be good for streamers. people love nothing more than telling streamers when they are being dumb and missing something obvious.

It's great that gamers seem to be really open to this kind of game once again, and no one has ever done it like Cyan does. Their attention to detail and sense of craft is something special.
 
God I hate wondering around for an hour with nothing to do. The only interactive thing I have available to me is a panel with about a million buttons and a bunch of German on it or some shit. When you have one thing to do to continue progress, but you don't know where or what it is, it really sucks.

That's the thing I like about the Witness, you knew exactly what you had to do to continue.

I still enjoy the game a lot, but I'll probably give it a rest for awhile.
 
It seems like this game for some reason has negative mouse acceleration, which makes it unplayable for me. Anyone else seeing this issue?

That's the thing I like about the Witness, you knew exactly what you had to do to continue.

That's Russian, and don't worry about it. Go explore elsewhere; you're missing a path you can follow somewhere.
 
I need to look at some non-spoilery gameplay videos...textures in the screenshots look great
The Giant Bomb first look gives you a good look at the very beginning of the game if you just want a look.
Running it on Epic settings looks as good as some of the best AAA games out there.
Yes, it really does look amazing. Nice to see a full 3D game finally do justice to the artstyle that was so stunning in the pre-rendered beauty of the art in Riven.

Man making Riven must have been such a high point. I mean they made a fortune on Myst. So much money, one of the best selling games ever, and they dumped a ton of it into Riven. Very advanced for its time.
 
Just finished the game, which took way too long due to my faffing around with unnecessary stuff. Good game although
Soria was desperately disappointing.

looking at screenshots and video it looks to me on par, graphics wise, with Vanishing of Ethan Carter (which looked amazing for the most part)...fair comparison?

Yes, they had a KS update about it, which is why i wasnt expecting a good game and am really surprised. They had to scramble last minute and salvage the game.
 
Definitely. I think we're getting to the point where RealRiven could be done pretty well.

The problem with RealRiven and even a true RivenHD is that the original assets are currently lost and likely on a batch of incompatible hard-drives and media types with today's software even if they did ever recover them.

It would literally be a case of recreating Riven from scratch, which is an incredibly tall order.

RealRiven IS being made. It's got its blessing from Cyan.

Never underestimate a dedicated fanbase though.

And it has gotten some criticism for being a cash in. So just wondering if anyone's played it. (Just to make sure there's no confusion, this is not the original prerendered Myst masterpiece).

I haven't finished it but it's basically realMyst with considerably nicer graphics. The downside is that realMyst will run on a potato, Masterpiece edition, not so much. It's puzzlingly demanding.
 
Played for a couple more hours today! Made progress but now feeling kind of stuck. Who knows, maybe I'll pick up a trail immediately like I did this time (great feeling) but I wouldn't mind if someone could provide some vague non-solution hints to get me looking in the right direction, so I don't have to wander all over the place! For those still playing, don't read if you haven't progressed to a point where you have multiple objectives!

The last couple things I've done:
- "Powered up" the tree in Hunrath.
- Went to the blue-ish world with trees surrounding, teleported the minecart and destroyed the red lazer
A couple things in my direct line of interest:
- In Hunrath, I need to connect the battery somehow. I went up to the battery and interacted with the plug, but upon further inspection it seems to be disconnected further down. I suspect it has something to do with the broken railway.
- In Hunrath, I have not managed to get across to the other side of the river. I have destroyed some rocks using the minecart from the upper junkyard however. I have raised the ramp and rotated the bridge to the other side of the river (stuck there now). I suspect this has something to do with using the barrier by the switch we pulled to divert water earlier to get to the Grinder (sp? as per green marks on map in house) but I cannot access that anymore as the lift required the water to be running the other direction. There are some obstructions on a door and railway above that may be related.
- In the blue-ish world with trees surrounding, I rotated the bridge and went through the barrier. On the other side I found a lever, but pushing it either way did not seem to do anything. I haven't found any other intractable objects here.
- In the green-ish lush world, there is a door. Nothing else seems to be found here.
Oh, and one other small oddity. There is a trophy in
The Tower by the mayor's desk
that appears to be intractable but nothing happens when I try. Anyone know whats up with that?

- Just keep playing, which is honestly a lot of the advice you'll get on most things that concern getting to another part of the map you can see from a distance. There's ways, but you're not there yet. Pull anchor and find something else to focus on.
- Stay on the other side of the barrier and keep looking for pathways in that big area where you brought down the barrier.
- Fuck that door. I hated that door when I couldn't figure out what to do about it until the solution came just like the other side of that river. It'll open in time because you'll find a path that will allow it to open. Until then, just find something else to focus on.

That trophy is a backer item, I believe. Just there for looks - but I could EASILY be wrong as I haven't finished the game yet.
 
Hmm, okay, I bought the game and I am making progress (slow progress, but I am getting places nonetheless) but... are there any tips to stop being just straight up overwhelmed? Like, not knowing where to go next from all your options, what to focus on, how to know to get back to places (some places take a fair amount of walking to get to for me to keep coming back and forth yet I'm doing it anyway so I'm spending a long-ass time just walking). I'm loving what I played so far but it's not even that I'm stuck on a particular puzzle, I'm just overall struggling with the overall experience. When I thought I was ok with the general lay of the land I
destroy the laser
and then I get overwhelmed right again. Is there a way to make that better, like a method to how you approach the game, or is it just something I need to get used to?

It does seem like you unlock shortcuts as you go, so this might be remedied later on so that might end up being better but it's still kinda too much rn haha.

Yes, it will be overwhelming at first, but just go at your own pace. What you wrote in the spoiler at the bottom is correct. It will get much easier to find your way around as you make more progress.

I was going to say "keep going back to the bunker guy" but you're past the point where that will really help 'focus you'. If you haven't, go back one more time now.

In regards to your spoiler, I'm pretty sure the developers intended you to feel that way. If you got okay with the lay of the land you will again, it'll just take some time!
 
I've finally hit a point where I'm completely lost. Afraid the game may be bugged. I've just finished the third

So, I just finished the third tree in the jungle area. I killed the alien who was disguised as Josef and destroyed the big red orb near the seed machine. The seed is now just lying on the ground, and when I get close to that area it makes a sound, but I cannot interact with it. I'm concerned that it may be bugged and should have taken me to the next area?

So, I'm not even really sure where to go next. Without spoiling anything, can someone lead me in the right direction?

In the blue are, I had found a wheel which I've now realized was keeping me from getting to the tree there. I left that area and am trying now to figure out how to get back since it's the last tree I need. I think I know how to get back there
(Need to move the sphere stairs around to where it was before I messed with it)

However, I am not sure how to stop that wheel once I get back to it. How do you get that thing stopped so you can pass it and can anyone help with getting back to that specific part? I can see the tree opening from a spot I'm in now, but I'm up above it.
 
Anyone else having issues with the positional sound? It's very jarring as sound will go from loud, to absent, from the left to the right speaker very suddenly when walking around.

edit: it's as if the game thinks I have surround speakers...so I'm losing out on the center and rear channels.

edit2: yeah oops...my mistake. My motherboard was set to output 7.1 sound.
 
Does anyone have a save file with access to the
cryogenic pods
that would be willing to share it?

I realized there is a way to prevent yourself from ever returning to that area, and it's keeping me to getting the final achievement without having to replay the entire game again.

Same boat. Two achievements I need from that specific area that contain points of no return.

Can we credit Dear Esther for making first person adventure/exploration games popular again? Cause I feel like we've had so many of them since 2012.
