Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

Incorrect, you cannot fire someone for protected activity even in an at-will state. Political activity is a protected class in CA, so you can't fire someone for it just like you can't fire someone for their race or sex and claim you were just doing it "at will".

Maybe facebook will ask him to fall on his sword and resign truly voluntarily, he cares a lot about VR and oculus presumably so he might be willing to do it to help oculus' PR. Not like he needs the money or a job at this point.

So if I work in Cali and hire goons to say vile, political shit online, I can't be fired from my 9-5?

No one deserves to be fired for something like this.

Fascinating how Palmer went from building up so much good will among the enthusiast community (and being everyone's favorite VR darling) to completely destroying it over the past couple of years. What a wild ride it's been.

Just curious, do you guys think anyone who donates to Trump or votes for Trump should be fired?

No. There are a lot of people in difficult financial situations that hold misguided political beliefs and shouldn't have their lives ruined over them.

Palmer isn't one of those people. He's set.

Especially since he was obviously playing a character there for fun - he was 16 and not rich when Trump would have run last time, he doesn't have a private plane. It seems really obviously a take on the stereotypical super-rich-guy.

Ahh yes...I see you are still saying he is 'playing a character'

What a delicious meme.

This shit isn't a game.

As well, most people are not the public face of an emerging technology that is still trying to find its footing. The guy was on the cover of Time magazine. He has a stronger association with the product and brand than even Carmack.

But all the same, simply supporting Trump is not what is on the table here and people need to stop misconstruing the reality of the situation to make it easier for them to come to conclusions.

(Regardless of the fact that it's illegal in California to fire someone for legal political activity, and no, registering your company in Delaware does not get you out of complying with state law for an employee who works in a CA office)

I'm not voting for Trump and have donated to multiple opponents this cycle but firing 40% of American voters or the millions (edit: more like 10,000s based on opensecrets data?) of people who have donated to Trump or a Trump PAC seems like an excessive response.

This isn't about funding a Trump candidacy, it's about funding white supremacists to, at best, generally lower discourse online and, at worst, harass people.

2012 = 8 years ago, gotcha.

What white supremacy group is Palmer supporting?

Nimble America says it’s dedicated to proving that “shitposting is powerful and meme magic is real,” according to the company’s introductory statement

Luckey met the man who would serve as the liaison for the nascent political action group, and provide legitimacy to a Reddit audience for later donations without having to reveal Luckey’s identity: Breitbart tech editor and Trump booster Milo Yiannopoulos. The bleached-blonde political agitator is most notable for being permanently suspended from Twitter for harassment after a series of abusive messages to actress Leslie Jones.

Article in the OP.

The Trump campaign / anti Hilary memes. The title is absolutely libelous imo.

Is it though? Seems disingenuous to call the mass of what comes out of the_donald which is where the pitch was originally posted on as something other than hardcore trolling that leans hard into white supremacy.

If your entire aim is to push literal shitposting for Trump then all you have to do is roll around social media to see examples of what that shitposting looks like. It's not a pretty picture to be associated with, and it certainly has a lot to say about anyone who isn't white. In any case, at worst he gets associated with the alt-right which have already been pegged as a self serving rebranding of white supremacy/white nationalists. Not exactly great any way you cut it.

Thankfully Im not, but do we have any examples that come directly from this nimble America group?

So supporting Trump automatically makes him a white supremacist. Is there anything to this or is this just young internet people getting emotional again?

It's not that he is supporting Trump. This group has ties to Milo Yiannopolous and 8Chan. Trump isn't the only connection. Try reading the article and it will make it more clear.

Yes let's just gloss over and completely ignore all of the surrounding circumstances around this other than his Trump support.

This makes my selection of future VR hardware much easier since Oculus will no longer be in the picture for me

Good thing I decided not to buy a Rift or back the Kickstarter. I will not be purchasing any of their products in the future.

I'm actually curious how far people who think like this take their logic in their everyday lives?

Do you vet actors, directors, or the massive amount of people it takes to make a movie and see where they stand up to YOUR political beliefs before you see a movie?

Do you do this when you shop for groceries? A car? When you listen to music?

I can separate the person from the property. Especially in this case since he sold nearly all of it to Facebook. I'm probably answering my own question here but in the end I guess it comes down to the point being - it's your money and you can do what you want with it. Though that probably applies to Palmer as well, I guess.

Would you say that it's worth categorizing the level of shitposting that comes out of the Trump campaign? I mean do you really want to stamp a grade on the posts that come out of that group if any at all, doesn't exactly seem worthwhile when he's explicitly asking to thrust more vulgarity into the online discussion. This isn't some PAC that's out there running legit ads, this is just shitposting and nothing more. The fact that there's a generous offer to fund this nonsense alone seems enough to paint a poor image of Palmer.
