Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

It might be a good time to re-evaluate things.

- Trump's political career is owed to leading a racist conspiracy theory for almost a decade to 'other' the first black President.

- Trump's introduction to the public eye was due to being sued for discrimination against black people, he took out a full page ad in the paper during calling for the execution of kids accused of a crime (4 black, 1 hispanic), is quoted as saying 'laziness is a trait in blacks', and the list goes on.

- White supremacist groups have rallied behind Trump, and consider Trump a savior for their movement. They see Trump's political career as mainstreaming the white supremacist ideology.

- He called for a ban on all Muslim immigrants and suggested they carry an ID that identifies them as Muslim.

- He called for the use nationally of stop and frisk, a notorious bigoted policy that overwhelmingly targets black people.

- Trump and his family repeatedly re-tweet white supremacist tweets. Seriously this has happened many times since he announced his candidacy.

- Trump relies on a smorgasbord of bigoted political rhetoric and blatantly racist rhetoric on a regular basis, including suggesting a judge recuse himself due to his heritage.

I was just about to ask. If we're going to call the Trump campaign a white supremacist group then the lady who championed tough prosecution of "superpredators" largely to the detriment of minorities should hardly get a pass. Trump as a metonym for racism is overdone and can be used to ignore the systemic operation of racism even in his absence (just as egregious police conduct continues unabated under President Obama).

But there is no doubt Trump attracts white supremacists (not to say all Trump supporters are) and there may be other troubling aspects to Luckey's involvement that I didn't get from the OP.

If presented with facts about that person, whether you look them up or not, and they don't align with you you're free to change your mind. I see nothing wrong with people choosing to not associate themselves with something they don't agree with. We aren't tied to liking something/someone for forever.

You might be able to separate it. With twisted logic. It's still apart of that person you support and it means you don't care enough about that subject to not help line a not so decent person's pockets.

Palmer is free to do whatever he wants. I'm also free to call him out for supporting a racist for president because, I know, it's going to do nothing but harm my fellow man.

Playing ignorant doesn't help anything and it doesn't make you noble.

I suspect it's not so much a matter of vetting people as it is a matter of trying not to support those who you know to be powerfully furthering causes that are against your own interests. Now modern economies are complex and many powerful people have their hands in many different pies. It would be fruitless to attempt to make sure all personal purchases are ethically unburdened, because let's face it, they aren't.

But if we're talking about luxury goods for which competitors exist and can be easily selected? Then sure, some people will shift their purchase to hopefully get fewer dollars in the hands of people actively working against them.

Everyone is free to make their own purchasing decisions. I'm a huge cinephile, but I have no interest in seeing new Woody Allen or Roman Polanski films. Nor do I plan on seeing Birth of a Nation, despite being very excited for it initially, due to hearing about Nate Parker's troubling past.

Luckey is the face of Oculus, even after the Facebook buyout. Unless Facebook does the right thing and removes him from his position, I can't see myself supporting a man who supports white supremacy.

r/the_donald is not the campaign. Go read what are considered acceptable posts by the community there and tell us it isn't a hate group. Much like /pol/ the overton window there has shifted so far that it fully encompases white nationalism.

One would think that people who grew up steeped in the technology of 2010s might be aware that simply deleting pages online and acting like it doesn't exist never fucking works. At best it makes people more interested in digging in harder.
 
I'm sure he will be moved on quietly with a press release sometime soon, i bet Facebook have some kind of clause that would give them an easy out of any contract.

Hey to be fair sarcasm is difficult to discern in any written text, let alone on the Internet. And these days you can never tell when someone is serious or trolling.

Which is another reason funding an organization dedicated to memes, shitposting and trolling is an evil endeavor.

Should start taking bets on which approach Palmer will take responding to this. Apologetic and professional, and distancing himself from the company somehow (whether that means resigning or what)? Or will he play the victim, and downplay everything in the article?

I would say his strategy is definitely going to be one of these two.

Appreciate you posting this list. I will be researching this further as well as some of the other things ive read. It would not be possible for to support someone who has those outlooks.

I'm not defending Luckey. There is a point where satire can be dangerous, and that's beside the point since he just seems like an actual piece of shit, not an ironic one. I just think here on gaf people react very quickly to posts and rarely bother to figure out who they're responding to. If something seems like a joke it doesn't take much effort to see if previous posts indicate that's the case.

Also an aside. oculus connect is in early October , they can't Ignore it, unless they want the coverage dominated by Palmer, if he attended or even if he absent and shoved into the background.

I'm super late to answer back to this, but whatever.

I like reddit the site and I think it has a ton of great communities. I specifically meant the front page didn't list any variant of the story not even /r/all has it on its first page. That's kind of strange considering much smaller gaming related things have made it to the front page. I'm little surprised by this I'm not implying all the mods on reddit are corrupt ultra fascist whitesupremacists. I was more leaning on the side of maybe there's a lot say /r/The_donald members down voting instances of this story.

Pretty much this. It's unfortunate that someone like Trump has obtained so much traction, but let's not kid ourselves. The alternative is not much better ( if at all really ) ...

I can't say I agree for calling for this guy's head for his political views though. No matter how indifferent you feel about them.

That being said, I'm not very educated on this movement he's trying to push here.

If you want to fund satirical hit pieces then fine. It's perfectly reasonable to think that he could do just that through other avenues, he's entitled to it. To approach /r/the_donald and ask for their help explicitly in pushing his ideas was braindead stupid by any measure.
