It's an interesting concept, since a lot of larger smartphones do provide displays that are fairly close to the original 5" panel the Oculus Rift used. My main concerns are that having to fit various phones would make it harder to fine-tune the optics, and latency from having to run everything through the phone's OS.

It uses lenses to achieve basically the same effect as Oculus, at least in theory. Phones have accelerometers and gyros that could give you head tracking capabilities.

Actually they do provide quite a huge fov, bigger than your average consumer hmd (~30deg vs ~70-80deg). So these products serve a purpose, just not the same as the Rift. These smartphone hmd are well more suited for watching movies than the Rift for example.

Isn't the Rift using smart-phone screens anyway? So this seems like a pretty good concept for a cheaper alternative.

I guess my main concern is how well the lenses can be if they need to work across various screen dimensions.

It's not competition for the RIft, because it doesn't do head tracking in imersive 3D environments. It's a neat way of viewing existing side-by-side 3D content without crosstalk and on a seemingly huge screen.

However, unless they're going to use a software overlay to warp the image, that content will be curved out of shape., I'd have thought.
