Oculus Rift Gets Competition " vrAse "

So it's basically this + one industrial designer.

Competition.

Oculus Rift really needs more direct competitors though.

---

But yeah, they need to do something about that name.

EDIT: Oh look....I'm a member :D

It's good to see competition, but it's just an idea right now. I don't see the point in passing judgement on something that doesn't exist.

The Oculus Rift should have competition it's only a good thing. But this is not a direct competitor. Yeah, it might undermine parts of the VR market via confusion; the headset looks somewhat similar, and they are using "virtual reality" in their PR. But as it is today this is basically only a competitor to Sony's HMZ headset.

It's a bit odd thought that tech crunch didn't clarify this, I'd think that their readers would appreciate it..

More competition is always good.

yup, but i would hope the tech would standardize first on some level with the Rift.

and Rift was already supposed to be the budget choice, i wonder how much image quality a 75$ set will drop.

edit: oh wait what you slide your phone in and just look at the phones own screen? not convinced :P

expected proper VR headset for gaming......... this is not that.

Actually in essence this is not far away from what the Oculus Rift is: a smartphone screen displaying stereoscopic imagery with optics on top to warp it appropriately for your eyes.

It sounds like it would be terrible, but surprisingly it's not. I got to try out a similar contraption at Gamescom by a company called Dive VR or something, you slide a smartphone in their setup (looked very similar), load up the app and bam, the experience was not very far away from the Oculus Rift at all. (and I've tried the Rift)

It's like saying: "Oh, it's the same as walking, except that you don't have any legs.."

I wouldn't mind proper competition, but let's face it, without tracking sensors, it is not VR, period. They shouldn't call it VR, or have the words "virtual reality" anywhere near this thing. It's more like a 3DTV taped to your face, not a VR headset.

Except for the fact that you cut out the rest of my post where I explain this kinda stuff can actually come very close to what the Rift does. And while the Rift does do a lot of custom stuff, it's not doing anything that is lightyears beyond traditional gyroscopes in smartphones, in fact I believe the hardware is derived from just about that.

I mean it. I tried out the Rift and was amazed. I tried out a smartphone contraption similar to this one and I was like holy shit, how does this come so close to the Rift? The optics, the tracking, it just worked damn well.

Yeah we should've told them a few years ago that they could just stick an iPhone in there instead of wasting their time on all that R&D..

You know, your "close to what the Rift does" is what made VR fail several times already..

..and that is why the OR guys are hard at work perfecting their VR headset, like trying to get down to that crucial-for-VR low-latency and XYZ tracking..

..and not to mention weight...oh my god the thought of having my Galaxy Note 2 on my forehead........... Haha

I don't get it.
Occulus Rifts's shortcomings are:
  • not enough resolution (needs at least 960x1080p per eye to be ok, better would be 1280x1440p, best would be 2048x2160)
  • need a really powerful PC GPU to drive those resolutions
  • slight input lag
  • no full positional tracking (yet)
Now look at this thing:
  • Smartphone screen res << PC
  • Smartphone GPU performance <<<< PC
  • to get rid of GPU performance lack -> Smartphone gets streaming data from PC = giant input lag
  • no tracking

They've realized that VR was hot and figured out how they can jump on the bandwagon without any of the R&D that Oculus is putting in.

I welcome competition, but this isn't competition. This is a sideshow. If people see "VR" through one of these and the framerate/tracking/pixel refresh/etc aren't very good at all, and they think that it's indicative of where VR currently is, then it's a bad thing.

Really?! We've had affordable VR headsets with 'retina' resolution displays and pretty solid gyroscopes and tracking several times before? Incl easy software support and drivers? Tell me more about this.

Yes. Smartphones these days. So heavy. Those iPhone 5's are like bricks of lead.

Of course the Oculus Rift is way more optimized but I am actually 100% convinced you wouldn't be talking like this if you had tried out the Dive VR or vrAse concept. After having tried it, it's easy to imagine a scenario where VR find its way to mainstream because of these kinds of smartphone-based setups.

I'm with you on this one, depending on how easy it is to get high quality video onto the phone from the PC.

Download any content which is “Side by Side” (SBS) ready to your smartphone and you are set. The Smartphone is a machine built for communications, so you can also stream the contents and games from various devices, such as the PC, MAC and TV.

There's absolutely no mention of the need for warping, or of any application they're designing to facilitate the transfer of an A/V stream between any of those devices and your phone. There's no mention of how the tracking would work for games depending on phone models, etc.

Basically, this is just a case/lenses, and everything else is up to you.

I read this as VR-arse.

And it looks like it too. More in common with a view master than with a proper VR system.

But hopefully this kinda stuff is the spur the Oculus team needs to turn VR into not just a headset, but a platform...

You have to attach a smartphone?

Sorry,but I have to pass.

And not a big fan of that name either.Hopefully they come to their senses and change it.

I'd be more on board if they were at least honest about what this thing can and can't do. Out of the box, with no software, all it can really do is play videos shot in the Oculus Rift form factor. SBS videos will look bad without warping since they aren't the proper FOV. Basically, the content is really limited. Claiming that this thing can play VR games is really shady without mentioning how much work would have to go into that and that the work wouldn't be done by them.

This is how I feel, They are trying to make a quick buck.

Err, smartphone screen res is definitely better than current PC monitors, especially when you talk about PPI, which is what the occulus rift needs.

No John Carmack, no sale!

*edit* Also this thing looks like pure junk. Expect to see a lot of this kind of stuff after the Rift really takes off.

dat name yada yada.

i remember when i got my first cowon S9(Like an ipod touch but with a high quality amOLED screen and far better codec and sound quality/support) and I mad something like this using a pair of safety googles and a cardboard box and has this idea of this product years ago but with my being 2D.

The only problem with these sought of devices is that they are not very practical, it seems cool in theory but in reality they are uncomfortable and a hassle.

If this thing is comfortable to wear for a few hours then I would be interested in one.

As I read further and further down the page, I began to suspect it was an elaborate joke. By the time I got the end, I'd decided it was just a cash grab, or a scam at worst.

Oculus already has a lot of heat so this one better be at least as good or they are just taking away potential sales of a great piece of kit. I want to see more of this before I completely dismiss it though.
