That's bizarre. I'll have to watch that match now.

EDIT: Ok, I just saw it. I'm kind of surprised that he said he was listening to somebody in the audience though. I don't know if it's just me, but I was on the taekwondo team in college and whenever I was in a match, I was so focused that I literally couldn't hear anything outside my immediate vicinity. It's like tunnel vision except for audio.

It's the same way for free throws, I don't get bothered by people heckling me since I don't hear them. I imagine most NBA players are like that.

Spain beat them in overtime.
So using the transitive property Spain's going down easy.

And cities don't already build new stadiums?

I think it'd be awesome for golf, i.e. my interest in it. We'd undoubtedly some really creative new course designs.
They do, but those house numerous events. A golf course would be a huge expense for one single event.

I don't want to belabor the point but it cost upwards of 10 million (30 million with a resort attached) to build a new golf course and have it running (according to USGA). In comparison it costs anywhere from 500 million (New Indianapolis Colts stadium) to a couple billion (see New Yankee stadium) to make a new stadium.

Of course, this is all in US dollars.. so it might actually cost 75 bucks in Europe.

Once again I'll point out the stadium is housing numerous events and can be used for other sporting events, shows, etc. in the future. A golf course is just a golf course. It can be used as a golf course in the future. Couple that with the fact that they'd have to set aside a great deal of land and plan the roads and other things pertaining to infrastructure for one event. It's easy to see how a host country wouldn't think it worth the effort for one event.

A golf course can also be used for equestrian events, as demonstrated a couple days ago in the Olympics ;)

Sorry have these have been posted already but it's a big ass thread so I hope you'll forgive me.

Doesn't golf already have its own international competition ? What's the point of adding it to the Olympics ?

All sports have their own international competition. Doesn't stop a load of them being in the Olympics. In fact the Olympics wouldn't be the same without them.

amateur golfers in the olympics would be bad. golf is nothing without its elitism (and racism) and they'd have to do away with both to represent the world!

No wait: The Ryder Cup

but if you think about it, I don't think most countries can field more than 2 or 3 players that's worth anything. Golf takes up 4 days for 1 tournament. I guess you could have team play then another round the next week for single play. Then it's that whole backward ass scoring other countries accept as the norm. Too many complications. Hot Dog Eating would be a better sport.

Racism against whom? Tiger Woods is a prime example of this; he is multiracial.

Not only that there are tons of pro golfers from all around the world.

golf is still an incredibly closed off sport. Tiger is like the only black guy allowed within 250 feet of any golf course.

I think that has more to do with it appealing to rich people though, so across the world it's pretty much played by wealthy white/asian people. it might be the most homogenous sport out there.

Were you cryogenically frozen a decade ago and just thawed yesterday?

You cant really call it homogenous if it has a significant population of more than one races playing the game (aka East Asia).

Edit: Countries which could put forth fairly competitive golfing teams: United States, Canada, Argentina, South Africa, Spain, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand.

Thats more than field competitive basketball teams.

Also, I think a Taiwanese girl won the WPGA this year.

Please go spew your ignorance elsewhere.

the real truth of why there is no golf at the olympics is you don't play any better in it on steroids, so the IOC probably doesn't view it as a legit sport.

edit: also lol @ golf fans, the only good thing to happen to that game is Happy Gilmore.

Hating Phelps is un-American. You must be a Buckeye.

:lol I DO go to Ohio State, but that's not the reason.

I just hate to see people winning all the time. It's nothing against him personally. :) I'm a fan of upsets.

i thought buckeyes were used to fail by now? oh well.

why? do you want to see someone else specifically win? or just to see phelps lose?

I don't want him to lose, but some people in the media are really going overboard with him being the greatest Olympian ever. The guy is in an sport that awards medals left and right.

Yeah I can see how that could cause some jealousy when being a Buckeye.

Am I the only American that wants to see Phelps lose?

*runs*
Probably not, but I'm not in that boat with you.

I'm cheering for the USA, but I would laugh my head off if they failed to get basketball gold again.

Trivia Time!

In the past two years, what college football team has the best overall record?

A:
The Ohio State University

I didn't even know that he went to Michigan until I saw that "sleep, eat and swim" piece that they did on him yesterday.

Is there where we inform you of OSU's SOS rank the past two years? As if two straight beatdowns in the championship weren't enough to shut you up.

Doesn't make it any less amazing. Gymnastics gives out a ton of medals too, as does diving, but nobody in either sport--or anywhere--has gotten 10 golds, right? I mean, he may well not be the greatest Olympian ever, but if he gets eight golds this time around I'd be hard-pressed to name a greater one.
