Monaco

Bordering the Mediterranean, the Principality of Monaco spans a total surface area of 2 square km - the second smallest State in the world after the Vatican - of which 40 hectares of land were recovered pacifically from the sea. It unfurls along a narrow coastal strip of 4 kilometres bounded by the French Riviera and the Italian Riviera and benefits from a particularly mild and sunny climate throughout the year.

The Principality has only one commune, Monaco, whose limits are the same as those of the State and is divided into 5 main districts: Monaco-Ville, Monte-Carlo, La Condamine, Fontvieille and Les Moneghetti.

The population, very cosmopolitan, consists of 125 nationalities for 32 000 inhabitants including 8 000 citizens of Monaco, 9000 French and 5000 Italians.

It is a sovereign and independent state within the framework of the general principles of international law and specific conventions with France. For seven centuries, the Grimaldi dynasty has been watching over and working for the destiny of the Principality of Monaco. Throughout history, the Grimaldi have managed to hold on to the independence and sovereignty of the Principality, making Monaco a sovereign state recognised by all.

I thought that this forum could use a starting point for this years tour. I don't follow cycling religiously so I don't really know who the front runners are this year. If someone who is very familiar with the riders wants to post, go ahead. I'll be trying my best to do an update before 7AM GMT every day to keep people informed as to who is in the lead in the various categories, as well as the info for the upcoming stage.

wow, this is going to be an exciting thread!
anyone know if versus is streaming the stages? I need to hear liggett or its not the real TDF.

I'm sure someone will have a webcam pointed at their tv on Justintv if versus isn't doing a direct stream. I'm just kinda digging tomorrow's time trial. They should totally set the last bit up exactly like the F1 circuit, chicane and all :lol

Would've been cool to have seen them go around the complete Grand Prix circuit in Monaco! By that map, is it just the harbour section?

They go through Saint Devote and Massenet, turn before Casino (inside the fountain), and then take the one of the little sideroads that joins just after Casio before getting to the hairpin complex. Then then go along the race route, and join the F1 portion of the circuit right before the tunnel.

nice maps there. that will be cool to look at as the race moves along.

so lets make a list of the GC hopefuls:

Cadel evans

Carlos sastre

Denis menchov

Alberto Contador

Lance armstrong

Andy Schleck (who I love, such an awesome dark horse but has been super strong recently)

Frank Schleck

Christian Vande Velde (people may be predicting a podium just to rope in american fans though. he had a very bad crash in the Giro: five broken vertebrae, broken rib, broken pelvis.)

hopefully someone somewhere comes through with some versus records. I dont mind being a day behind if it means I get to see that coverage (sorry eurosport).

No real interest but will be cheering Mark Cavendish on anyway, you have to admire the man's pure power sprinting at the end of a stage, it's all us Britons have this year!

I'd love to see Lance Armstrong or Levi Leipheimer take the prologue on Independence Day, but realistically, I'm pretty sure Cancellara is going to stomp them. I think Kim Kirchen will finish on the podium if not in the yellow jersey.

Can't wait for the start tomorrow. Really looking forward to the Tour, like every year. Personally, I don't think Lance can win it, but it would be an amazing story.

oh yeah, forgot about kirchen. He's a possibility.

He has finished 7th twice and wore the yellow jersey for a while last year. I think that has opened the team management's eyes to the possibility that he could win. The question is whether his team is all for Cavendish, or if he'll have support as well. He's not strong enough to pull a Savoldelli - he won the Giro d'Italia all by himself while his 7 teammates stayed behind for Ivan Quaranta.

I would really like to see him in a position where he is strong enough to win it, but he rides for Contador. That would be a really awesome gesture.

have to agree with that prediction. menchov has been so fucking close to the top all season. (with a nice win at the giro) it will be interesting to see how he stacks up now that contador is racing and lance is back to form.
also cant wait to see how the mountains go for astana. That team is more stacked than ever with climbers, and contador can make some really awesome moves on the slopes

Just under six hours until coverage begins on versus. Gonna make it an all nighter because I doubt I could wake up at 5:30 am heh

I'd do this too, but then I wouldn't be able to wake up in time for the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. :lol

Pussy!

Told the girls that the Tour starts. They're not happy about me having the TV to myself every night, although partner's sister said she'll watch the Tour with me this year and pick a team. Last year she only watched bits and pieces of the mountain stages so it'd be nice to have a watching buddy this time around.

Leipi #1, but tbh, I'm a little disappointed in the times. I figured differences would be larger today. On the other hand, people like Contador, Kreuziger and particularly Cancellara not been yet. So the big differences might yet come.

Lance faded hard in the second half, I doubt his time will hold up.

THey're playing Lance up a bit too much in my opinion, perhaps to try to draw in more American viewers. He's still a very strong rider, but not really a contender after 3 years off and at the age of 37.

stoked to see the team TT back in action too.
Me too. Anyone know the timing mechanics and if they bone teams if one teams blow all the others out?

The 2004 (IIRC) rules said that loser teams could only lose a certain amount of time to the winner. What happened was US Postal destroyed the field, but since the second place team could only X amount of time (2min?), and the rest of the teams could only lose X+ something like 10 seconds, the second place team got boned on the minute or so they took out of the third place team.

This is the Tour de Suisse all over again :lol
And what a humiliation for Menchov, Rabobank might as well start riding for Gesink.

Yeah what was up with that. Is TTing not his specialty?
It most definitely is, I have no idea what is up with Menchov. His time trials during the Giro were epic, with only his fall keeping him from winning the final one in Rome.

the whole doping hypocrisy makes me so angry.

They are all doped, why not just allow it. If they want to willingly ruin their bodies, fair enough. It's not like professional cycling is healthy in the first place.

All I care about is watching good races, I really don't give a flying fuck if they are doped or not.

Good to see an official thread on this fantastic sporting event.

Contador was great today, finishing only 18 seconds behind Cancellara. More importantly though, he beat his team mate Armstrong, further securing his place as the leader of Astana.

Menchov was a big disappointment, I don't know what happened to him, losing 1 min 31 seconds....I still have high hopes for him though.

I'll try and watch as much of this year's Tour as I can, but unfortunately I'll miss most of the stages monday thru friday.

i dunno, stirring words in the interviews. if he says hes there to win, I believe him. although he might just be running distraction for contador. contador certainly put a stamp on the time trial. that boy is good at everything.

also, I had no idea until today, but the place where I'm living has like 900 channels on the TV and one of them is VERSUS! FOOK YA!

Mountain Passes & Hills:

  • Km 8.5 - La Turbie - 8.6 km climb to 4.3 % - Category 3
  • Km 49.5 - Côte de Roquefort-les-Pins - 4.3 km climb to 4 % - Category 4
  • Km 81.5 - Côte de Tournon - 4.2 km climb to 3.6 % - Category 4
  • Km 129.0 - Col de l'Ange - 1.5 km climb to 3.6 % - Category 4

Looks like a very nice stage tomorrow, plenty of space to sprint, but little peaks thrown in here and there. Loved seeing the cyclists on the streets of Monaco today though. Tomorrow's update will include a little more detail on the KotM and Sprinters competitions, as there wasn't much to put in for today :lol

I agree to a point. We all know the guys in the past doped. Hell, Indurain was my favorite before Armstrong, and I can't say he didn't also juice. He sucked in the mountains, but he was a beast in almost all other aspects. In most sports, designer steroids have become big. They should just do like bodybuilding and accept that people cheat. Create a seperate division for non-juicers and test that heavy. Otherwise, let the cheaters race a good race. The Armstrong/Ulrich battles were epic. I loved that shit. Same thing with the year Marco Pantani won. His fight with Indurain was great. PEACE.

He didn't do too bad. Under a minute off, and he can still do it. Let's see how he does in the mountains, b/c that's where he's won it in the past. Crazy to think of the winning and current Lance Armstrong compared to the almost sprinteresque, thick-legged Armstrong that quit the tour early in like 1998. I was a fan of him from then, but he had a totally different style back then. PEACE.

Against?
The headbutting, journalist slapping, colleague mocking Cadel Evans is always a good choice for that.
