I hate to be that guy, but what is this core that you speak of?

Mauer, when healthy, is a true talent. Beyond that, though? Who do the Twins have? Obviously in former seasons, Morneau would be mentioned here. But who knows if he'll ever truly return to the levels he was at before suffering the concussion? Span is a nice player, but he's not a key piece. Cuddyer, Kubel, Young...meh.

Blackburn is an excellent pitcher. Scott Baker is terribly underrated. Liriano is a huge question mark.

The Twins have always been one of my favorite teams to watch, but at this point, their future looks quite bleak.

On a different, note, GO BREWERS! Six in a row. Just need the Cards to start losing some games.

When does eznark return from his ban, by the way? This thread needs some more Brewers aggression.
 
Congratulations to Jo-Jo Reyes, who just tied a record.

The Blue Jays' Jo-Jo Reyes has matched a major league record by making his 28th consecutive start without recording a win.

Reyes was pulled after the third inning of Wednesday's game against the New York Yankees with Toronto trailing 5-0. The Yankees went on to win 7-3.

Reyes hasn't won a game since June 13, 2008, when he beat the Los Angeles Angels as a member of the Atlanta Braves.

On Wednesday against the Yankees, the left-hander allowed all five runs on five hits and two walks, including two-run homers by former Atlanta teammates Andruw Jones and Mark Teixeira.

Matt Keough of the Athletics set the record for consecutive starts without a win from Sept. 6, 1978, to Aug. 8, 1979. Keough pitched a complete game in his next start on Sept. 5, breaking the streak with a 6-1 victory over the Brewers.

In my mind the core is Mauer, Morneau, Span, Baker, Liriano. Valencia & Nishioka profile out to be solid players. Blackburn & Duensing are fine back of the rotation types. Gibson should be a good #2 type pitcher. They have what seems to be a steady stream of outfielders who can hit and field a bit (Revere, Benson, Morales, Hicks) that should be ready in the next year or two, which should help a lot.

The bullpen is a complete joke now, and absolutely needs work. The rotation is potentially solid, especially if they come around and re-up Liriano for a couple more years (assuming his turnaround now is the truth). I don't think they're going to just go in the toilet quite yet, especially once they get Mauer & Morneau back to form. They should have ~$20-30 million to work with in the offseason, and hopefully they can move some pieces in July to get a few mid-level prospects. There are holes to fill, but in theory, they can put a pretty competitive roster out there.

But here's where the fact that Bill Smith is the GM worries me...

I absolutely love Kubel, but I fear he'll be gone after this season. Thome, Kubel, and Cuddyer are all FAs after this year. Thome is 40 years old, Kubel is basically a DH and corner outfielder who bats left handed, and Cuddyer is a favorite of the manager since he does magic tricks in the club house and will (poorly) play all over the infield in addition to the outfield.

I'd be shocked if Kubel re-signed, but I think it is a smart move for them to re-sign him as he probably has a couple more good seasons ahead of him. It's a tremendously stupid move to re-sign Cuddyer because his better days are behind him. I am positive they will both end up signing for around the same amount of money next year, and Kubel will go hit 30 homers for another team while Cuddyer will be hitting .235 for the Twins and playing far too often since Gardenhire is infatuated with him.

Book it.

Yeah, I don't really feel that good about it. I guess this is what teams felt like when beating the Mariners last year, or the year before etc.
 
What the HELL, Hochevar. He keeps having this cycle where he has nine or ten consecutive scoreless innings spread out over a couple of nights, and then when it's time to crash back down to earth, he crashes HARD.

I personally think some afternoon games are great. The problem is MLB rarely has them, especially for this Sox team. So color me surprised when I tune into Sox-in-2 replay.

I take what I can get at this point with the lineup.

I was going to get Mets/Phils tickets for this Saturday. Good seats on Stubhub for Section 138 Row 3, Pagan going to be back. Plus Hamels pitching, who the Mets usually give fits. Plus a nice giveaway too! Was about to order when I saw Mike Pelfrey was pitching...

This is ridiculous. Evidently his shutout counter started again in the next inning, because he's been lights out since then. At this rate, he'll pitch a complete, shutout game, except for giving up eight runs in the fourth.

I'm going on Friday, fourth time this year. It's a good meal, night out. They're 0-3 so far.

LOL Ruben Tejada is tricky. Pitcher motioned to throw to 1st so Tejada squared around. Infield plays to bunt and Tejada hits a single. Why would the Cubs play the bunt with the pitcher on-deck?

Bases jacked, 0 out and the pitcher batting.

Slowey said this same shit when he was sent to the bullpen at the end of spring training. It hasn't worked for his body to pitch out of the bullpen, and instead of trying to shuffle the roster around, they instead imply he's a pussy and/or a whiner and/or not a team player and/or a bad guy and/or a clubhouse poison.

Bill Smith rolled into the season with a bullpen that was essentially Matt Capps, Jose Mijares, hope Joe Nathan is good, and a prayer. One of those prayers was that Slowey would thrive in the bullpen. He has not. Duensing has in the past, and hasn't been a very effective starter this season, yet he remains in the rotation while they trash Slowey and prepare to move him for pennies on the dollar.

Bravo.

Looks like the Reds are coming out of their slump in time for this weekend in Atlanta.
Mixed blessings-I appreciate them beating the Phillies. I do not want a hot Reds team in Atlanta.
