I'm surprised no one is mentioning Gerald Wallace as a candidate for Most Improved...with 4 games left, he only needs 4 blocks to become only the third player in league history to average 2 steals and 2 blocks in a season. He has raised his FG% from 45% to 54% this year, he's dropped his TOs from 2.3 to 1.8 and he's averaging nearly 16 ppg.

Its because he plays for the bobcats

Well Kenny Smith had David West as his Most Improved and while the Hornets don't suck it's not like they're an awesome team. Also, you have to take into account the injuries the Bobcats have went through (Okafor and May...I really think we had a shot for 30-35 wins if both were healthy...Wallace himself missed 10-12 games).

Yeah but the hornets were almost in the playoffs if not for their choke down the stretch. Cats were no where close to that

:lol WTS...

Meanwhile the Raptors end their ten game losing streak...by beating the Pistons. :lol This really has been bizarro week.

You think The Raptors winning had anything to do with Flip benching all five starters for the entire fourth quarter?

Oh I'm sure that's all it was...but we're talking about a Raptors team that has choked down the stretch to the Bobcats. Hell, the result was still in doubt till a Pistons turnover with about 6 seconds to go.

and apparently Sheed attempted a 3 with his left hand in the thrid quarter. :lol

:lol

Good game by the Bulls and Wizards. Why didn't that guy from the Wizards call a timeout when he recieved the ball?

I'm not sure about this but I think the Wizards might have slipped a spot or so in the playoff matchups after this loss.

That was one of the best games I've seen all season. I really hope that by next year, Hornets and Jazz can somehow meet in the playoffs, those two teams really duke it out.

so is it a 2 man mvp race now between nash and kobe?

my vote goes to kobe. he's just done too much this year; the scoring title, 81 points, 62 points in 3 quarters against the mavs who only scored 61 in 4 quarters, and most importantly, got the shitty lakers into the playoffs and brought them 6 games above 500. no one expected the lakers to be where they are today, all their critics said they'd be a lottery team and would be lucky if they'd even be a 500 team. let's not forget all the laker records he's broke this year including the laker's season scoring record set by elgin baylor 42 yrs ago, which he broke tonight. and yes, he's making his team better. it took them some time but kobe's teammates are stepping up, lamar has had 2 triple doubles in a row, and kwame is finally living up to his potential.

Nash makes everyone around him better players. Kobe is a ball hog and makes no one look good besides himself. Nash could make the Lakers bench look like allstars if he was playing with them. The choice should be clear between those two.

the MVP is between kobe and dirk, with the dark horse candidate being chauncey billups. and I'm a huge kobe hater, but like Bill Simmons, I know he'll deserve it if he's won it. honestly, Shinobi's list is great, but when I think of 3 people who are the MVP this year, it's those 3 because the first 2 have made the biggest impact on their teams' status, and Billups is simply the best player on the best team.

i don't know about that. if nash were on the lakers, guys like lamar and smush would still hit bricks like they have all year with kobe. they're only doing well now cuz it took some guys all year to understand the offense.

there's making the team better, then there's putting the team on your shoulders. kobe has been doing the latter all year.

Yeah, it's hilarious how Kobe will get the Lakers to the playoffs just so they can get knocked out in the first round. MVP indeed.

"Word. I bought my fishing poll last week"

Nash makes everyone around him better players.

Diaw = 11, 16 and 11
Marion = 31 and 12
Barbosa = 20 and 6
House = 15 and 5

That's without Nash tonight. You think anyone on the Lakers could get that kind of production without Kobe on the court? They lost cos they didn't play a lick of D and Nash doesn't either...

Nash has Marion, a guy who himself has been getting some MVP consideration lately. Kobe's next best player is Odom, who has been mr. inconsistently for all but the last month of the season. He is also taking a team who's starting lineup has consisted of Mr. NBDL Smush Parker, Kwame "Biggest Bust Ever" Brown, and even Brian freaking Cook to the playoffs.

The easy counter to that is that most people expected the Suns to free fall after losing JJ to the Hawks and Amare missing most (and now basically all) of the regular season, and that Nash didn't even deserve to win last year. And instead he's gone on to have an even better season with a starting lineup that changed drastically from last season, while still gaining over 50 wins. Honestly, the Suns have exceeded expectations even more then the Lakers have this season.

After thinking about it some more, my final four for MVP would probably be Kobe, Nash, Dirk and Billups. I figure they'll be the top four vote getters (though Wade could figure in)...I'm just not sure about the order.

It's got nothing to do with hate...there are several worthy candidates for the award this year.

Of course if Kobe finishes like, 9th in voting, then you'll have a point. :lol

Even though Barkley and Kenny are usually wrong about teams (aside from the constant that the Knicks suck), I agree with them completely that Dirk will win MVP. He's the best player on what many consider one of the best teams in the West, and that's usually what it takes to be MVP.

I'm sick of hearing this brought up in Kobe's defense. He put himself in this position when he threw a tantrum to Lakers management over having to share the ball with other good players. The boy wanted his team to suck and is now reaping what he sewed.

I don't agree with a Nash MVP either, but Kobe zealotry in this forum is comical.

Just remember that the Mavs have improved in record the past two years since Nash, the MVP, has left. But my guess on how it will turn out is:

1) Nash
2) Dirk
3) Kobe
4) LBJ

Oh, and more Gordon love...

Ya, and they still lost. The offense looks like shit without Nash in there.

They scored over 100 points. What they needed was Nash's D... :lol :lol

Billips is the MVP
Billips? Fine just as long as Billups doesn't win it. 18.8 points, 42% shooting, 3 boards and 8.7 assists per game doesn't seem that special. Why should he get the award, because his team is loaded?

They turned the ball over like 18 times and most trips down the court were just one big cluster fuck. Outside of his shooting Barbosa is garbage, they need Nash in there to win games.

Probably because Billups is on the best team in the NBA, and that team is the best because of him. In an ideal world a person would win MVP because he made his team the best, not because he himself is the best.

Nash is third in the NBA for turnover per game. :p
Obviously a team isn't going to be as good and the offense won't run as smoothly without their point guard, especially one who is arguable the best.

So Prince, Wallace, Wallace and Hamilton had nothing to do with it? It's all Billups. Record matters, but you have to take a look at the talent around a player as well.

Two years ago, we would have agreed with you but after looking back at it all, I stand behind Kobe. It wasn't about Kobe not wanting to share the ball with good players, it was about Kobe working harder than anyone else on the team. He's the first to practice and the last to leave. Kobe also works his ass off in the off-season too only to go to camp to a fat, out of shape Shaq (and Shaq does this every year). The same Shaq that would rather get surgery during the season rather than the off-season and the same Shaq that took his contract dispute on the court. So you can't blame Kobe for wanting to leave a team that was committed to Shaq, a Shaq that wasn't even committed to the Lakers.

With that said, it was the Lakers owner that got rid of Shaq and Phil Jackson, not Kobe. Jerry Buss said he got fan letters 5-to-1 favorring Kobe over Shaq. When you look at that, look at their ages, their work ethic, how could Buss or any owner favor Shaq over Kobe?

no you're wrong. This team would have been better off having a fat, old Shaq with Slava Medvedenko and Kareem Rush as the next two best players. CHampionships here we come!

Looks like Nash or James will win it

Early MVP returns
A group of NBA writers from every team submit weekly notes throughout the year, during which at the end of the season we submit who we are voting for in the various postseason award categories.

So far, with 22 of 30 precincts reporting, the closest race is at Most Valuable Player. Here is how I voted, followed by the tallied votes so far from my collegues. First place gets 10 points, second 7, third 5, fourth 3 and fifth 1.

My MVP ballot (I will publish my voting in each category in Sunday's Oregonian):

1. Steve Nash, Phoenix
2. Kobe Bryant, LA Lakers
3. LeBron James, Cleveland
4. Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas
5. Chauncey Billups, Detroit

The Group voting:

Player Points 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
Nash, PHX 152 9 4 6 1 1
James, CLE 139 5 7 6 3 1
Nowitzki, DAL 96 2 5 3 8 2
Billups, DET 91 4 2 4 5 2
Bryant, LAL 73 2 3 3 3 8
Brand, LAC 12 0 1 1 0 2
Wade, MIA 9 0 0 0 1 6

I believe there are 127 voters, so obviously, this is hardly an accurate barometer of how the race will turn out, but thought it might be interesting to pass along.

By the way, looks like Dallas' Avery Johnson is leading for Coach of the Year, Phoenix's Boris Diaw as Most Improved, Detroit's Ben Wallace as Defensive Player of the Year in a close one with Bruce Bowen, and Chris Paul has been an unanimous pick as Rookie of the Year.

As more votes come in, I will update

Quick
