hey guys im having this problem

whenevre i go in the first door of the game it crashes and gives me a "VPU Error" whats that all about.

I experienced similar problems when playing Call Of Duty before I updated the drivers for my 9500 Pro.

Wow... the one fix for the cache megs to 96 has now allowed me to play the game on High WITH NO PROBLEMS!!! Im sooooooo happy!!!!

Wow... the ingame server browser sucks balls.

Turn filter settings to remove passworded games and full servers.

Yet half of the servers I join still demand a password, and the other half are ALWAYS full (yes, apparently 3/12 is considered "full").

Did you guys notice the cameo appearance by Carmack in the game? I swear that first dude in the trenchcoat sitting out at the subway station is supposed to be him.

This was a known problem with Call of Duty and Radeon cards. It plagued the game for months!

Hmm I wonder why the ID guys are saying extracting the pak files do nothing but add load time??

I just extracted them to see if it would help. It definitely does. When the files were compressed I had to run in 1024 X 768 at medium settings to get nearly hitch free gameplay. If I bumped it to High I would get hitches sometimes. After extracting the pak files I can now run at 1280 X 1024 on high with no hitches at all. However I did bump it back down to 1024 X 768 in high setting since I didn't like the fact my frames dipped to about 20 in action sequences in 1280 X 1024. I can keep them at about 30 min in 1024 X 768, usually in the 45-55 range. I have to say I'm very impressed with how well my 9800PRO is handling Doom 3.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Can someone please show me how to run this game 'windowed'?

Please.

Alt+tab, alt+enter... None of that works.

Heh...extracting the Pak files DOES add loading...but it also removes nearly every single little hickup while playing...I'd rather have extra loading and better gameplay :b and even still, the loading is still faster than Far Cry soo....

The game is well worth it for me, the multiplay blows...yes...but I play almost exlusive LAN in other games for that

Doom 64 > Doom 3

I dunno...

Doom 64 is pretty slick, but Doom 3 stands above it. I played and finished Doom 64 for the first time this week (using the Doom 64 Total Conversion pack). It was fun to play (and HARD), but Doom 3 is a better experience...

what's the command line (or where's the mod) to keep bodies from disappearing on a map? i thought i saw someone post it somewhere but i can't find it anymore. i'm sick of "gibbing" demons and zombies. i want their bodies to remain, if nothing else, to serve as landmarks so i don't get all turned around. :)

i've been tweaking and running timedemo benchmarks. on my very modest computer (2Ghz P4, 512 RAM, GeForce FX 5950), i'm running on high detail with the self-shadowing "ultra-high" mod, and a bunch of other effects turned on at 800x600 and i'm getting close to 30 fps (27.8 to be exact).

definitely a very fun game, but i find that it's not something i can stay up all night to play. it's just too stressful and draining and i invariably get too sleepy to be scared.

What is the Doom 64 Total Conversion pack?

And by the way I didn't play Doom 3, I just felt like saying something controversial :p

Just played for an hour... got to probably my favorite part of the game so far. You have to escort this guy Edwards to the exit in -total- darkness. He has a lamp, you have a gun, and together you walk through the valley of death. Or something to that effect.

And I like this shot because it just feels so damn George Romero meets Silent Hill.

So has anyone tried this, or seen it tried, on a x300 se yet? I downloaded the far cry demo and it was actually playable at very high quality @800x600, so I'm tempted to give this one a whirl. I plan to upgrade my video card as soon as pci-e versions of the 6800 gt get released (unless it's late enough, in which case i'll just get the next gen gpu,w hich should be native pci-e).

My other specs are

1gb 400mhz dual channel ddr ram

AHAHAHA I've managed to get High Quality running in 800x600 on a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 at a great speed (30+ FPS) along with ungibbable bodies.

Here is an excellent set of configs that I've compiled myself from a list of sources and created a very thorough graphics/speed upgrade.

My Config said:
This is a list of changes I've made to the Doom 3 config file. For some reason one or two of these cmds won't change unless you type them specifically in the in-game console, placing them in the config sometimes doesn't work. Most of the these can be merely placed in the "DoomConfig.cfg" file without hassle but JUST IN CASE you should create an "autoexec.cfg" file (create new .txt file then rename it) and simply copy and paste these cmds into it. Save the file then load up Doom 3, every change placed in the "autoexec.cfg" file SHOULD work. To double check load up the console (I changed it so simply pressing ~ works now, but if it doesn't: CTRL + ALT + ~) and type in the cmds to see their values (ignoring "seta" and the "#" part). Of course delete what I've written in the parenthesis.

seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "512" (this value should be 1/4 or 1/6 of your system ram)
seta image_cacheMinK "20480" (this just sets the minimum ram size for Doom 3 to use)
seta image_downSizeLimit "1024"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0"
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "1024"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "64"
seta image_downSizeBump "0"
seta image_downSizeSpecular "0"
seta image_downSize "1"
seta image_forceDownSize "0"
seta image_lodbias "0"
seta r_preload "1"
seta r_skipBump "0"
seta r_shadows "1"
seta r_useOptimizedShadows "0"
seta r_useTurboShadow "0"
seta g_bloodEffects "1"
seta g_decals "1"
seta g_showBrass "1"
seta g_projectileLights "1" (off by default, enables the monster's weaponry to light up the enviroment)
seta g_muzzleFlash "1" (off by default, enables your weaponry to light up the enviroment)
seta g_doubleVision "1" (off by default, enables your vision to blur when you get damaged, no performance hit)
seta g_showPlayerShadow "1"
seta image_anisotropy "4" (raise the value, 20 is maximum, for better visual quality)
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST"
seta com_videoRam "128" (obviously if you have a 256 mb card then change it to reflect that value)
seta com_allowConsole "1" (allows you to simply hit the ~ key to enable the console)

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
I previously posted information about a co-op mod and also displayed a link up to it. Many have reported that this mod allows the host of the match view your CD Key. This information hasn't been verified by anyone so no need to panic (if you've only played with a friend then you have no problems). I've gone ahead and searched through the .pk4 file and found no hints of CD Key stealing but JUST IN CASE, do not install this mod.

I have a few problems with the game. I am running the game on a 9800 PRO but I can't enable AA/AS and it seems that I can't even change the res. I have tried to save the settings, restart a new save. Restart the game altogether from desktop, tried to force AA/AS thru ATI graphics settings in desktop etc. and it won't work. I just tried some other game and AA/AS work just fine. What is the problem?

Well I have tried both and I can't see any difference. The game stays at 640x480 or whatever the default res is. This is getting annoying as the game really doesnt look good with the settings I am using right now.

Finally got around to installing it last night. Cried as watched the cutscene (1024x768 Medium) at what seemed to be about 10 fps. Then i realized i forgot to reset my aa/af setting in CP from playing DAoC. I had 6x AA/8x AF roofles. Took down AA and left AF same. Definetly became much smoother after that.

One thing i noticed on my system is I actually prefer having V-Sync enabled, as the tearing w/o it is a real bitch. I've never found it problematic w/ other games, but it is much too noticeable in D3.

finished the game this morning.. it was fun but somewhat tedious in the middle, after crawling through military installation corridor #2391, anyone who complains about halos somewhat repetitive levels woudl go crazy here. imo they should have cut out a few of the middle levels, since
the later levels are pretty cool, especially hell. the animations in that level is awesome, love the bricks flying everywhere to make walls and watching them shift around to open as a door. the later bosses are cool too, well except maybe for sarge, and they were fun to take down. the graphics for the final bosses and the soul cube is impressive as well, maybe it was because i was up way too early, but some of the final scenes really seemed like a taste of what will be possible when computer graphics bridge the gap with professional cg in movies.
I think if they trimmed down the game a bit and opened up some of the areas it would have perfect, but as is its a fun fps for people who just want to blast shit. beyond that it doesnt offer too much.

Yes the tearing is huge. I've never noticed any tearing before until Doom 3. I've got a couple hours in with Vsync off and the tearing isn't as bad as it is in the beginning. Well, perhaps I am used to it now. Anyway I don't really notice it anymore.

I'm in Alpha Labs 2 right now and have to say the experience is just getting better. Yes, the gameplay consists of pop around one corner, fight off baddies, pop around another, fight some more, rinse and repeat. However, I am totally digging the atmosphere of this game. The setting. The ambience. The enviroment. Perhaps having this 5.1 sound system is making a big difference. I can hear enemies behind me, to the left, to the right, etc. It adds to the tension of the game. Of course, some people might get bored, but doesn't it raise your adrenaline a bit when you two around a corner and see four beady red eyes staring at you in the dark? I've been known to bash ID in the past, but this is a fantastic effort on their part. Can't wait to play some more tonight.

this is exactly where i'm at right now and i too am starting to love it more. i don't mind the same-y environments at all. even though it's all sterile metallics puntuated by the occasional splash of crimson, i really like all the thought they put into the mechanical designs and the random animating industrial machines. like all good horror movies, the environment plays just as central a role as any of the monsters here and UAC's mars base definitely has a menacing organic feel to it -- like the innards of some techno-cyst growing rapidly out of control.

i check my brain at the door, lower the lights, and go with my gut instincts. it's an incredible ride.

Probably same exact reason why they disabled self shadowing, it isn't perfectly implemented and a bit buggy.

I disabled the U-E-Q-Mod (self shadowing) because franky it looked like shit. At first it was incredibly cool to see players cast their own shadows on themselves but it's so badly implemented and buggy.

Personal guess is that they couldn't optimize and fix the feature so they just cut it out by default. There are also lots of problems with the player shadow (like the fact that it's a disembodied shadow) and a few glitches here and there but it's worth it for the extra immersiveness and the bugs are easily ignored once you get used to it.

Anyone try the features I listed above? COMEONE I DO IT FOR YOU, MY PUBLIC.

Yes thank you. I got a nice boost after tweaking it. It actually runs pretty well now on Athlon T-Bird 1400MHz, 768Meg Ram and 9800 PRO 128 Meg at 1024x768.

The first 5 hours or so I played only after 1AM with headphones on because I worked all night. The game scared the shit out of me and made me so paranoid. But then I got a day off and played it with 2.1 speakers during the day for about 5 hours and I think that pretty much completely killed the mood for me.

Maybe I just got used to the 'monster jumps at you when you open a door' or 'door opens behind you to reveal an imp' scare tactics. In a word, desensitized. Or maybe its the playing during the daytime thing that kinda took away some of doom 3's luster.

I don't know. I played it again at night with headphones and it just wasn't the same as the first few hours. I still love the game and its quite a ride, but my advice is to ONLY play it at night with either a 5.1 system or headphones.

There's something that kind of bugged me about the chaingun guys. In the alpha, during one level, there was one of those guys at the end of a hallway kind of taunting you. The things he said and his voice was just insane and freaky. But they don't do that nearly as much in the final game which is disappointing.

Another thing, does anyone know how to keep the blood staying around? It disappears after only like 10 seconds or so, which sucks. I'd like to have it stay for at least 3 or 4 minutes.

The guy with the lamp doesn't hold a candle to a part later in the game where you have to follow this glowing tube holding a specimen that is the only source of light. It leads you though a maze and doesn't stop, all the while imps pop out of the walls very fast. I was just trying to keep up with the tube and had 5 or 6 imps on my ass. If you stop to shoot at them the tube continues and you are stuck in pitch black in this maze.

In Delta Labs, WHERE THE HELL IS THAT DAMNED PLASMA CONDUITER THING? Is it in Chief Abrams office? I can't find the entry code to the office so :\

Well I got the game, been running it on my system that i talked about a few posts up.

It's pretty playable at 640xx480 @medium settings (i notice no performance difference between med and low).

Very good game so far, quite creepy. I wasn't expecting to be scared by it after playing it before *ahem*, but it's come a LONG way since then.

Very atmospheric, always something going on aurally. Very cool.

It's not in Chief Abrams office, although there is a nice surprise in there if you can get inside. The code for that room was given to you much earlier on in the game though, IIRC it was in one of the first few PDA's you find.

The Plasma Conduiter I think requires that you go up a couple of levels at that part of the game, I really can't remember.

I love it when the voice laughs after throwing a body or two around, scares the crap out of me but its so freaking I like it.

I've only noticed this at this one part of the game. Can't say I've seen it anywhere else but this one place, the shadows look like they are faked. Least as I move around they look more like some offset. Can some one elaborate on this. Least when I move around it doesn't behave like a shadow.

Well I'm not experienced with the Doom 3 engine but I think I understand it enough to explain it. The flashlight's shadow calculation renderer is completely seperate than the realtime shadowing engine used in the rest of the game. The flashlight doesn't produce a real shadow that is cast over other objects but creates a reasonable facsimilie.

Essentially the flashlight renderer instructs the object(s) it's being shone on to extrude a semi-transparant polygonal mesh that acts as a shadow. It's actually wholly connected to the object and only extends a short distance away, hence why it appears strange. The renderer takes it a step foward and calculates the adequate distortions to the mesh depending on the location of the background objects and the angle you view it. It's certainly not perfect but if you don't specifically look for it (or don't have an eye for graphical techniques) it will most likely escape your notice.

While I can't sit down and discertain the benefits of this method over traditional realtime shadows but I'll go ahead and assume it's an ample enough benefit (ie: the framerate stays stable whenever the flashlight is used) to provide a less convincing result.

I hope I've been atleast somewhat helpful with my ignorant assesment.

EDIT: I'm glad my configs helped you out Shompola!

I tried them out, but I prefer the other tweaks found at the upset chaps doom 3 guide for 128 cards. Their tweaks provide a much more consistant framerate at 1280x1024 at high quality on my r9800pro and that is just what I prefer. Of course, I've yet to test out multiplayer with these settings so it remains to be seen just how much I'll have to play down the graphics in order to get a completely solid 60FPS. Before the tweaks, I actually had to turn everything down to 800x600 with medium quality in order to get a smooth playing experience in multiplayer. Really unfortunate. I wonder why that is...

Yes my tweaks are incredibly aggresive. They are mostly a combination of what UpsetChap listed for high quality video and a few other modifications of my own (including the ram and video card sizes). Suprisingly my card is a mere 128mb but I do run at 800x600 on High Quality.

Like Ryu mentioned, UpsetChap has provided a blend of best quality/FPS on his website. I previously posted it a few pages back but it seems he has updated it and provided a few changes. The best thing you can do is go through the URL's I listed and pick & choose what config edits you want to do. Going through the massive list of Cvars & Cmds is incredibly helpful along with UpsetChap's excellent website.
