UK Charts:
‘Cars’ overtakes ‘Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ to give THQ their first All Formats No1 of 2006. The film launched on Friday, helping to boost sales of the game by 88% in its third week of release and put the skids on Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ 5 weeks dominance at the top of the All Format Chart.

‘Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ drops one place to No2, while Nintendo celebrates 2 DS exclusives in the All Formats Top 5 with ‘New Super Mario Bros’ a non-mover at No3 and ‘Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training’ up one place to No5. The 3 remaining Top 10 film tie-in games are slowly running out of gas with Ubisoft’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Jack Sparrow’ remaining at No4, Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ down one place to No6 and Activision’s ‘Over the Hedge’ remaining at No10 – these being the only Top 10 games to lose sales this week. The Platinum release of ‘The Sims 2’ helps push EA’s blockbuster back into the Top 10, up from No13 to No8. Two weeks ago Take 2’s ‘Prey’ was at No2, but now finds itself out of the Top 10 falling 10 places from No7 to No17. Another XB360/PC title to slip this week is EA’s ‘Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II’, down 9 places from No11 to No20. There are two Top 40 new entries: PS2/PSP ‘Formula 1 06’ at No14 and add-on ‘Civilization IV: Warlords’ at No36 (No1 in the Full Price PC Entertainment Chart). A quarter of the All Formats Top 40 is made up of film license games thanks in part to ‘Miami Vice: The Game’ entering the Top 40 for the first time in its second week of release, at No25 and retailer promotions giving ‘The Godfather’ a new lease of life at No34.

ds is pulling in some really impressive staying power for so many titles and the increased exposure it's been given in stores is pretty noticeable everywhere i've looked.

i spoke to a friend of mine who works at game and he said nintendo's relationship with retail has improved, but the bottom line is ds is selling well so stores want to sell it.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

Oh... :(

Oh well, I guess the DS is doing better and that's not so bad. It seems to be benefitting older and better games as well.

i wonder how brain training's sales will continue in europe over the coming months?

i've seen a few people playing it out and about and it's been the number 1 seller in the amazon uk games chart for a while.

Very impressive software sales for DS again. Hardware sales must be insane.

I think NSMB, Brain Training and Animal Crossing will be in the chart for a long time, maybe even till the end of the year.

That could very well happen. What kinda pisses me off, is Nintendo DS' lack of software during the summer in Europa. I want Nintendo to maintain the dominance in Europe they have at the moment :(

good to see Brain Games going up, shame Mario is only number 3. well atleast it's not moved down, i think alot of it is down to a huge advertising effort, i still see ds ads on c4 all the time, plus they sponsor friday night project

It's pretty amazing. I think the only Nintendo games that have ever had so much staying power in the UK (at least since the SNES days) are the GB Pokemon games. They're really turning their image around here. DS is everywhere in my local GAME, it's the first thing you see when you walk in.

Really. That must be quite a turnaround from last September, at least according to other UKers on GAF.

Yep, things are changing massively over here in favour of the DS

By the way, stay tuned for some UK sales to appear soon on VGCharts

There are four huge posters in the window of my local GAME advertising the DS right now, with 4 more advertising Cars, which has a picture of the DS boxart in each one. There are also huge DS boxes stacked up. All else in the window is two Xbox 360 boxes.

There are shelves upon shelves of DS games, too. And gamers believed this day would never come!

Well, in Belgium Nintendo still has to fight hard to get people at least aware of the fact they're not bankrupt. Seriously: it's all about Sony. The PSP is the cool thing to have, and is advertised everywhere, while most people don't even know of the existence of the DS. I thought it would change with the DS.Lite, like the trend in other European countries, but there's nothing happening at all. It's still all about the PSP, nothing else. Some electro- and game stores don't even sell DS'es. And very few have Lite boxes on the shelves.
On the other hand, at least people still know of the gameboy, which is advertised a lot more than the DS.

It's the same with home consoles.
Playstation = one and only videogame console.
Nintendo = dead.
Xbox = "ow yeah, the green boxes on some of the shelves".

UK only. As I say it's educated guessing, but should be good to about 5-10% You have to remember that the pink bundle is doing around 5k a week still, as are the three original versions combined. I reckon combined (three original+bundles+labrador) would be just above New SMB in 3rd place this week if all counted together!! Pretty amazing. Must be looking at similar numbers in France, the chart we had last week had Labrador at 13k for the month- that's 3k a week, plus other versions is prob around 6k a week, similar to the UK.

Please, look at the DS top 5 and the PSP top 5. The PSP top 5 are filled with license crap whereas DS has Mario at it's top and the great games Animal Crossing, Brain Training and Big Brain Academy are after that.

Mario's pretty good but honestly it's too easy and slow for me now that I'm not a kid. Bring on MMZX, that's the game that will sell me my DS.

Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ down one place to No6 and Activision’s ‘Over the Hedge’ remaining at No10 – these being the only Top 10 games to lose sales this week.

It seems Mario didnt lose sales this week so your last figure is wrong I think.

Mario is the only thing that saves the DS, and then still it's... 1 sub-par Mario game with 4 non-games vs 5 "licensed crap..." still a hard choice.

The power of opinion.
