I like the first Ronaldo goals, where boos ring out around the stadium and the commentator says "There's no boos now". It's that sort of keen observation that makes football commentary such a difficult job.

:lol

Reminder:

The Libertadores 2006 Final kicks off tommorow in Sao Paulo for match one. Morumbi stadium was the home of last year's final match in which Atletico lost to Sao Paulo 4-0.

The final, final match is played next wednesday in Porto Alegre. Estadio Beira-Rio was also the home of last year's final as Atletico's stadium didnt have the required 40,000 capacity.

Whoever wins has a slot in the World Club Cup in December, where they will probably beat Barcelona for the world title.

Hah. Well, I have something against Barcelona, despite winning that signed Ronaldinho shirt (I'm not sure why, everyone else seems to love them), so I won't mind if that's true. I just hope they deserve it this time if so, unlike last year when Liverpool trashed Sao Paulo, but for some reason couldn't put the ball in the back of the net.

Actually, I just found the stats. Liverpool 62% possession, Sao Paulo 38%. Liverpool 6 shots on target, Sao Paulo 3. Liverpool 15 shots off target, Sao Paulo 2. :lol ****ing hell, it takes a special team not to win a game like that.

Is everyone going to join in with predictions this year? I seem to remember not much interest last year, though maybe I'm forgetting. You can predict anything, from any league or competition, for example you could predict an entire Premiership table or just the top 4. Top scorers, who'll finish higher than who, who'll win the CL, who's going down...whatever you like.

I'm going to wait until right before the season beings personally, to see who clubs sign or sell, what injuries are picked up. I am going to reserve the right to change things up until the transfer window closes (end of August), but ONLY based on signings, not the way games have gone so far.

I'm looking forward to the Liverpool game tonight, though not in the hopes of an upset like someone round here ;) Liverpool are in a better position than Arsenal, not only because of fewer injuries, but also they can put out a lot of players who didn't go to the World Cup. Finnan, Hyypia, Riise, Pennant, Sissoko, Gonzalez (if he recovers from a knock), Zenden, Bellamy...I wouldn't be surprised if all of those play. I don't think this will give us much of an indication of what Benitez intends to do about his midfield, I'm sure he'll play Sissoko and Pennant with either Gerrard or Alonso (probably the former, but maybe even Zenden instead of either if he's not forced onto the wing), there's really no point in putting both out when you can rest one.

Liverpool have had a pretty crappy preseason, but you'd still expect a win. I reckon Bellamy and Gerrard will score (if the latter plays).

I think I'm going to do the same and make my predictions right before the season starts. I really hope things are shaken up this year like someone unexpected breaking into the top 4 or a team like Osasuna winning the CL.

I'll sign up for the Fantasy Football thing, but I'm a bit confused. Am I right in thinking you can change your entire line up every week of the season, so long as its worth adds up to 100 units or less? But if say I have Harewood in my team and he costs 5 units when I buy him, but he goes up to 6 units the next week, he still only takes up 5 units until I let him go right?

You have 10 days to get your teams in before it gets locked down for the first round, i'll see how uptake here goes, if its not so great i'll make a new thread to attract some yanks.

And yes Mama, you summed up the basics pretty well, here it is in a more bloated and hard to understand form

Welcome to Yahoo! Sport Fantasy Football, a free game that lets you run your own team of real English Premiership football players from the season's first kick right through the year-end battles to avoid relegation.

Each week, you'll decide which players to start, with a budget of 100. The better your players perform in real-life games, the more their value rises, but if you hold onto them the increase in their value will not be taken from your 100 budget. If you sell that player though, he may well ending up costing you more than you paid previously. Buying players just before they turn in a top performance is the best time to take him on, but that often requires studying form. If your players do poorly after you have picked them, you can get rid of them of them but still you will be left with 100 to play with.

So yeah the name of the game is picking good players up when they are doing badly, then hoping they all come into form at the same time...

Oh man, I don't dare use my preferred team name, The Twats, it says I might have my team removed permanently if it's obscene.

I just realised why the password is that. That's pretty clever, and not nearly as gross as I first thought.

Can I buy players and keep changing them through the week right up to the deadline? Or is it that once I've changed them for the week, that's it, even if there's 4 days until the next match? And what about matches on Monday, when am I allowed to change again after the main fixtures?

I'm taking the fanatic thing as a compliment btw.

EDIT: Oh, I think I see. You pick a team for the next week (I guess Saturday to Friday), but as soon as the deadline has passed you can start picking a team for the week after. Only this new team you're picking won't come into play until that next week, so any midweek games are counted by the players you had on the Saturday before.

The deadline to make lineup changes for the next week's games is 10:59 a.m. GMT every Saturday (the first deadline is Saturday, August 13, 2005 and the final deadline is Sunday, May 07, 2006). Any change made after the deadline will not take effect until the following week.

You do not need to reset your line-up each week. If no changes are made, we will automatically carry your current lineup forward from week to week.

So yeah, any changes after 11am Saturday wont take effect till the week after, so no mid-week specific changes.

I'm free to do a team now though and then change it on the 18th, right? You can change things as many times as you like up until the deadline?

While we're on a rules binge, heres the scoring

All teams receive fantasy points based on each player's actual performance in several statistical categories. Each category has a specific point value associated with it (see chart below), and teams receive points for all 11 players in their lineup.

If a player appears in more than one game during any given week, his total fantasy points for the week will be based on the sum of his real-life stats for the week.

If it's not obvious, I'm ThugsWithSkill.

Surely you don't get 3 extra points on top of a goal (and maybe on top of the shot on target) for a penalty! Does it just mean free kicks for set piece goals?

Well, I've picked a team, but I haven't put much thought into who they're actually playing the first week, so it could well change when I look at that. I'd be relatively happy with it as a team over a season, shame it doesn't work that way.

I went for expensive strikers, cheap midfielders who score a few and defenders from non-top 6 clubs i dont think will conceed to many...topped off with the best keeper i could still afford.

Sucks that i dont have commisioners approval over the other teams ;)

Ok, I was really, really confused by the dates they were giving in the yahoo rules. I didn't understand why we had to get our teams in a week before the season even starts. Then I realised these are last years dates (and rules, I guess they won't change), which probably explains why it says Saturday the 13th, when the 13th is a Sunday. So if anyone else has come across the same thing and is as slow as me, there you go.

Rooney and Scholes have had their punishment come through from those friendly sendings off. Right now, they'd both be suspended for 3 games each and amusingly, due to slow post, they'd miss the games against Charlton, Watford and Spurs, rather than Fulham, Charlton and Watford.

Apparently they're likely to win appeals to have their punishments reduced, so Rooney isn't likely to miss any games and Scholes just Charlton.

Benitez has gone with a 4-5-1 tonight, and I wonder if that's the formation he intends to play this season. While he does seem to have more confidence in Crouch than many of us, it's hard to make a case for him playing ahead of Gerrard, Sissoko or Alonso. Here's the team:

---------------------Reina

Finnan----Carragher----Hyypia----Riise

------------Sissoko-------Alonso

Pennant----------Gerrard---------Zenden

-------------------Bellamy

Very strong, plenty of pace.

What is the deal with Louis Garcia? I remember some loan rumors but don't know if that actually went through. I think he's a great player and much better than Pennant and Zenden.

Holy shit, Haifa have an away goal with pretty much their only attack.

As for Garcia, I don't know if he's better than Pennant, want to see him at Liverpool more first, and I do think he's better than Zenden, but it's the wrong position so it doesn't matter. His main problem is he doesn't really have a psotion, he's sort of floaty. And that sort of player needs a team built around them, and he's not good enough for that. Plus he has as many bad games as he does good ones, despite his good games being that good.

EDIT: Aaaaand Bellamy's scored. Said he would ;)

EDIT: DONT PM ME see post below!

Open to all, join now, or ill piss you off with constant nagging throughout the season!
Everyone who replied to my PM said the same thing, they aid they were not planning on making one but if there are enough people willing to do it they will sign up. I was going to ask you all to sign up to the premierleague.com fantasy league, but since you've already made one at yahoo we'll just stick with this and not make any other ones. I'll make my team on yahoo in the next day.

It looks like things have taken a turn regarding cashley cole. Chelsea have made an offer and arsenal have rejected it, so it seems like they've stopped negotiations with arsenal.

I like these early CL games, you get to see where teams need to improve. Liverpool won 2-1 in the end and deserved the win, but it was a bit worrying. I'm sure they'll win through now, but the away goal keeps it in the balance.

Haifa didn't get to attack much, but when they did they made some chances. Don't really understand it, they're the same players who made up the best defence last season, though I suppose Finnan and Hyypia are getting on a bit.

Bellamy likes running down the right wing, it's one of his strengths normally, but that was a problem against Haifa. They had so many men back that if he went out wide, he was surrounded and they still had plenty of cover in the box, and there wasn't much room to run into. Pennant (played well except for this) and whoever plays on the other wing need to learn that when playing with one striker with a lot of width, they need to get into the box towards the far post when the ball is on the other side. Can't just leave the loan striker in there, especially if he's only Bellamy's height. He didn't have this problem at Blackburn, we harldy ever played him up front alone, so when he went wide there was someone to cross to and Pedersen was ALWAYS in the box. And no one bothered to defend deep against us, so the space was there. Think he could form a great partnership with Fowler or Crouch, but I don't think Benitez should play him as the loan frontman against teams who are going to defend deep.

I was surprised Benitez took Bellamy off for Crouch, even if they did win the game eventually. I don't see why he couldn't have taken off one of the central midfielders instead, I feel they would have won the game more convincingly with two up front.

Ah well! In other news, Chelsea say that "no agreement can be reached in the current circumstances" for Cole. It's probably just a rubbish attempt to get Arsenal to lower their price, though Chelsea have shown no sign of having any balls when it comes to this sort of thing so far. Unfortunately for them, Arsenal are under no pressure to sell him, this time next year he'd still have a year left on his contract, they could sell him then.

Liverpool will probably be quite happy when they see some of the other results around Europe tonight. Salzburg beat Valencia, Dynamo Kiev beat Fenerbache and Levski Sofia beat Chievo.

Blackburn also lost in our penultimate friendly, to Sparta Rotterdam. I'm not too bothered about the result (1-0), as we only had two definite starters in the side and one possible, what I'm more bothered about is...well, that. We're so close to the Premiership starting and 8 to 9 of our players are missing? Hardly ideal.

So Reggina is the latest Italian club to get implicated in Fixgate, while Lazio plans to appeal this shit all the way to a legit court (if, you know, such a thing exists in Italy).

Henry was pretty adament about not wanting to see ole' Cashley get cashed in. Whether that outburst had anything to do with Arsenal's choice of rejection is up for debate I suppose, though I'd guess it's relatively little. It's not like Arsenal want to sell Cole, but Cash doesn't seem to be giving them an option at this point. Though with both clubs setting a deadline of week's end to complete this thing, who knows...maybe he trots out at Emirates Stadium in ten days after all.

(Interestingly enough Henry doesn't appear to have said anything about Reyes. I suppose you can read into that what you wish as well.)

It is amusing though that Chelsea thinks the asking price for Cole is too high. Let's see...they spend 21 million pounds on a winger that played with a mid table club and hasn't proven much of anything on the big stage so far, but they're gonna niggle on price for what many people consider the best left back on the planet who's won two leagues, two FA Cups and been to two World Cups. It's really ****ing laughable, and Arsenal knows it. Chelsea will cough up whether they want to or not...they really don't have a choice, especially if they're unable to smooth over the Gallas situation. And they've all but admitted that Wayne Bridge isn't gonna cut it, at least on his own.

Sao paulo - Inter half time

0-0

10 players a side. The ref that did the US-Italy game in the world cup is here (and his entire team of refs)

Hes not bad though, the first explusion (minute 10) was right (elbow) and the 2nd one wasnt bad (tap on the head) but I geuss its a makeup red card

International beat Sao Paulo 1-2 in Morumbi. The away rule isnt in effect for the final, so next weeks game is still interesting.

The game was close, fast paced and exciting.

Godamnit I cant believe this wasnt aired here. The game was rigged I tell you.

HOUSTON (AP) -Forward Samuel Eto'o scored in the 90th minute as FC Barcelona came from three goals down in the final five minutes to tie Club America of Mexico City 4-4.

The international friendly at Reliant Stadium drew a sold-out crowd of 70,550, a record for a soccer match in Texas.

Forward Nelson Cuevas scored three first-half goals to help lead Club America to a 4-1 lead early in the second half.

Ronaldinho, FIFA's World Player of the Year for the second straight season, sat out the first half as team officials rested him for the second straight match.

But he played the entire second half and pulled Barcelona to within 4-3 on a penalty kick in the 89th minute after being knocked down by Club America's Jose Antonio Castro.

Forward Javier Saviola started the comeback when he took a pass from Eto'o in the 85th minute to score from 15 yards out to make it 4-2.

In the Dutch Mickey Mouse league, you should be bothered about that :p

+1 for Mclaren, Walcott & Bent have been picked for the U21s, so they arent in the full squad.

Today's humourous article...the Premiership's Judases starting eleven.

http://www.itv-football.co.uk/Story/0,14272,6110_1399004,00.html

Funny how half the players in the lineup have some sort of link to the Gunners. :lol

Lyon has denied making a bid for Ribery, which seems to be another one of those stories that repeats the same two or three things every few days. Lyon pres thinks they'll be able to land him though...guess he's just waiting for Ribs to make his transfer request official.

Meanwhile Arsenal's also playing hardball on the Reyes deal with Real, insisting they not get less then the 16 to 17 million they essentially agreed to pay when they bought him from Sevilla a couple of seasons ago. I think Arsenal just wants to show that they're not gonna get pushed around by anyone else, or have players dictate terms to them. It's a bold stance on their part, particularly since it might end up costing them the chance of landing Ribery (no way they'll be able to get him without selling at least one of the transfer targets).

As for Walcott being "demoted" to the U21 squad, I'd rather see him in the U20 squad, as that would give me the chance to see him in person next summer at the U20 World Cup. But I assume he'd be a more likely candidate for the U21 side (how many U sides does a team need anyway? Sheesh).

Its only as much work as you want it to be, just pick 11 players and leave it at that if you like.

And i think the u20 wc must be the same thing as u21, its probably just called a different thing over here because of the required birthdays to qualify.

I have a couple of Pedersen (I think I'm meant to call him Gamst now, that's his mother's name and what he'll have on his shirt this year) compilations I demand you watch them. Shows exactly what I mean about wingers coming into the box when the ball is out wide on the other side.

You'll probably want to turn the music off on both, and make sure the second one is playing at the original size and not blown up.

You do know that Sparta is one of the low-ringer teams in our competition and usually subject to relegation right?!

In the Dutch Mickey Mouse league, you should be bothered about that :p

I know, but look at the team we put out:

-----------------------Brown

Neill----------Mokoena---Todd------Matteo

Gallagher----Douglas----Acuna----Peter

---------------McCarthy----Kuqi

We're not a big squad, second smallest in the league last year, once you get past our first team and a few subs the quality drops dramatically. As a contrast, this is our first team right now (probably):

---------------------Friedel

Neill-------Nelsen-------Khizanishvili-----Gray

Bentley-----Reid---------Savage-----Pedersen

-------------McCarthy----Roberts

Almost completely different. And out bench would be:

Enckelman
Todd
Peter
Tugay
Jeffers

As you can see, only two of the team who faced Sparta even manage to make it into the subs.

Here are highlights of the Barcelona game:

1st half http://www.uploading.com/?get=6M00A1SE

2nd half http://www.uploading.com/?get=CF6RRSB8

The commentator makes some good points.

Ibrahimovic has signed for Inter for £16m. I don't really rate him, but clearly they do and that surely signals the exit of Martins. Either that or the Adriano to United rumour is true. Either way, they have to many good strikers now. Should be an interesting battle between them and Milan next year, they really have strengthened well.

Terry's been named the new England captain.

I think it's absolutely the right choice. I'm sure Gerrard would have made a great captain too, but the reason I always thought Terry is better is that he's more likely to play. We don't know yet how McClaren intends to play, but there's the possiblity that he'll decide to play either Gerrard or Lampard alongside a defensive player, thinking about what makes a better team rather than just who are the best individuals. If that was the situation, he'd play whoever was on the best form at the time as they're both so close in terms of ability, so there'd be no guarantee Gerrard would even be in the side to captain.

Don't really understand Bent being in the U21s. I've said this a few times now, but we have two qualifiers coming up where we can't play Rooney or Owen. If Bent can't get into the senior squad now, when the hell will he? When Rooney and Owen are back? And who's getting in ahead of him? Defoe, Johnson, Ashton and Crouch? Those are real kicks in the teeth for Bent.

EDIT: Gerrard is vice-captain.

Yeah Terry was my choice for Captain, he stand out as a natural leader imo, Gerrard comes across as more of a 'lead by example' type and given his England perfomances, i dont think thats an example we want anyone following.

I don't think Gerrard's played badly for England for a long time, he was one of our better players at the WC, but he certainly doesn't seem to perform to the same level he does for Liverpool. Whether that's down to playing with Lampard or some other reason, I don't know.

Another reason for Terry over Gerrard is he's a bit younger (only a bit) and plays in a position where you can go on longer at the top level. If he's a good captain and keeps his form, we'll probably be looking at a few more years of leadership from him than Gerrard could provide.
