United have got Kuszczack at last. Not really sure if it's for a year's loan or a signing. One site says a loan, but others (like Unite'ds official site) don't mention that at all. Don't specifically say they've bought him either, just captured him and things like that.

Either way, West Brom have gotten Luke Steel permanently (keeper, just loaned to Coventry last week, immediately recalled and sold) and Paul McShane, a young defender, on loan.

Blackburn might not got Ooijer now, despite the player wanting to come. He's 32, and his contract is up next year so he could leave on a free, but they want over £3.5m for him. In what I like to call "bullshit reasoning", they say they sold Bouma to Villa for that much and Ooijer is better. Difference is, Bouma was 27 when Villa got him. I don't know if his contract was running out too, but regardless, that's too much for a player of that age. So....**** off PSV, you'll lose him for nothing next year instead.

EDIT: Seems like it is a loan. I don't much care about the deal generally, but I'm glad Foster will be going back to Watford now, we could do with more first choice English keepers in the Premiership.

Apparently Allardyce is in advanced talks with two unnamed strikers in his attempt to strengthen squad. He's still looking for that 20 goal scorer and Sky predicts that one of them is Danijel Ljuboja from Stuttgart. He sounds like someone Allardyce would bring, but this is supposed to be different. I hope it's either Anelka, Saviola, or both. Allardyce has said before that it's more about quality than quantity but the squad is looking awfully small.

I hope Bolton don't get a good striker, it's been their weakness for quite a while. You go to the Reebok thinking you might not win, but also hopeful you won't lose, but if they get a top goalscorer that perhaps starts to sway towards a loss.

Man Utd are still chasing Diarra (the Lyon one), which seems to be the reason Senna's move hasn't happened yet. If they can get the former than that's a major coup, if not they still have a good second choice who'll almost certainly come if they bid.

Excellent and now even Manutd.com are saying that we are going after Adriano.

Is hadareud banned or something? This thread hasn't been updated in quite a while and the big leagues are all set to start in the coming weeks.

And it's about time we get a sticky, 700+ posts and we're still in preseason (for most of the teams you people follow at least ;). I'd say that's worthy.

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. The mods hate footy we didn't get a sticky last year either. :(

Yes they should be kept secret!

I'm starting to have doubts about my 4-3-3. I'm thinking an extra midfielder would net me much more points. I'll give it a try the first week though, but if I get killed, it's 3-4-3 or possibly 3-5-2.

It's fine by me if you post your teams, just don't complain when I copy players I hadn't thought of ;)

seriously, it doesn't matter if you post your teams or not. There is only room for 1 or 2 superstar players, in my case Thierry Henry, a couple of reasonable players and about six guess and hope.

If someone has picked Lampard, i can't really go, oh shit i need frank too, because then i would have 50 points left to spend on 8 players.

If it was a free for all in choosing players then yeah my team would never see the light of day. However becuase it is quite heavily restricted, the chances of people being able to copy something and retain any semblence of a reasonable team is scuppered.

In the BBC one a couple of seasons back the restrictions weren't so bad, so my team was Cech, Terry, Carvalho, Lampard, Gerrard, and Henry with some reasonable back up. Try that with the points here and i don't think all those guys would fit under the points by themselves.

i'm FC United

it would be incredible if Man Utd managed to sign Adriano, with Inter getting Zlatan.....there just might be chance but i'm not completley sure

All the papers, and the BBC are saying Beckham will be dropped this afternoon (England squad announced at 3pm BST)!

There might be hope for McClaren yet!

He'll probably damage control by saying its do with fitness, as long as he's no longer an automatic choice im happy.

I still think Beckham could do a job for England as a reserve central midfielder, but if McClaren wants to bring in younger players instead then that's fine by me. I just hope he's doing this because he believes it's the right choice, and not because he (rightly) thinks it'll make the public happy.

I said ages ago we should have Lennon and Wright-Phillips as our right wingers, and I can't really think who else we have to pick at that level. Pennant's a possbility, looked good for Liverpool, but I suspect he'll be looking to challenge the other two over the course of the season rather than jumping ahead of one of them right away. We certainly don't lack right wing pace anyway.

With injuries to Carrick and King, at least one other player (than Hargreaves) is going to have to come in at defensive/holding central midfield. I expect Scott Parker will get a chance, if two then Parker and Reo-Coker. Central defence is another interesting one, as he appears to think it's time for Beckham to take his bow, it might also be time for Campbell. King's definitely injured and Ferdinand's not really fit, so it does leave space in there after Terry and Carragher. Will Woodgate get a recall? I'd have thought it maybe time for Anton Ferdinand, but he's been called up into the U21 squad.

Actually, now I look Reo-Coker's in the U21 squad too. I'm a bit unsure how it works to be honest, does Peter Taylor name his U21 squad and then if McClaren names his and there's some crossover those players go into the senior squad and others are called up to the youth level? Or have they gotten together and Taylor knows he can safely name these players as they aren't going to make the senior squad? There's just a lot of names I'm surprised aren't going to get a chance higher up...Ferdinand, Carson, Reo-Coker, Bent...

I hope he doesn't stick with James. He's 36 now and no one was confident in him when he was a bit younger, it's time to move on. I'd have Robinson, Kirkland and Foster personally, but I'll be very disappointed if Kirkland at least doesn't make it.

There are so many interesting positions, like left back. Cole obviously, but I don't see Bridge as better than Konchesky. I think I've made it clear what I think of our striker situation, but while attacking midfield looks wrapped up (Lampard, Gerrard, Jenas, maybe Dyer ahead of Jenas when fit), you never know, he might give Nolan the chance many have demanded. Joey Barton even.

Anyway, enough England, we'll find out the answers to all these in a couple of hours.

I said how Diarra was who United really wanted yesterday and Senna was just a good second choice, but now it seems he might be a good third choice! Papers are reporting United want Hargreaves too, whether ahead of Diarra or not I don't know. 3 great players, they can't really go wrong so long as they secure one of them, though the younger two would be better.

It's no wonder I was confused about the Kuszczak transfer, it's one of the strangest deals I've ever seen. Turns out they HAVE signed him on a year long loan, but he WILL sign for them at the end of next season on a 3 year contract. It's not one where there's a possibility that he might sign, the deal is he actually definitely will. In which case...why not just sign him now?

Im pretty sure Taylor asks McClaren if he can pick certain players, or McClaren tells Taylor he can pick certain players. Ive never seen anyone get called into the U21 squad then named in the initial full squad.

Im a bit miffed Reo-coker hasnt been picked, i wasnt really expecting him to play a major role but i thought McClaren would probably only want 45 minutes out of all the players with the premiership starting at the weekend...especially with the Liverpool and Chelsea players playing the community shield this weekend. I guess that means he's been pushed down the pecking order somewhat, obviously Carrick & Hargreaves were ahead anyway, I dont rate Jenas at all but i guess he must be the other central midfielder.

Well Jenas is more of an attacking midfielder, I think McClaren sees it as split. So we have players like Lampard, Gerrard, Jenas, Dyer, Nolan, Barton, and then we have Hargreaves, Carrick, King, Parker, Reo-Coker, and you pick 2 or 3 from each.

Dawson might make the squad I guess as centre back, it's hard to know if he's out of the U21s because of his age (he's 22, but so is Reo-Coker) or because he'll make this squad.

Why do people still even consider Dyer? The guy has scored 10 goals in the last 5 years.

I know its not really his fault, he's been screwed over by injury every time he's been fully fit since signing for newcastle 6 years ago, but still i dont think he's ever going to be the player everyone thought he might be when he first signed.

I would take Nolan or Barton maybe even Jenas over Reo-coker as an attacking midfielder though, Reo-coker doesnt offer an awful lot going forward, his final ball is poor, he's a good finisher but he's goal shy. He'd make a much better holding midfielder imo, Id love to seem tried out in a Viera kinda role because i think he's got pretty similar attributes.

None of those four will be pushing Gerrard or Lampard for the Euros anyway so i guess it doesnt make much difference.

I really like the guy, I remember him coming back for Newcastle last season (before promptly getting injured again) and he totally took over the game with his bursts into the box. I really do think he's our third best attacking midfielder, and offers something different to Gerrard and Lampard (in his dribbling and pace), while Jenas is just a worse version of them.

Well that was kind of my point, that's why he's in the defensive/holding half of the midfield choices and why I wouldn't think he's in direct competition with Jenas.

None of those four will be pushing Gerrard or Lampard for the Euros anyway so i guess it doesnt make much difference.

This is true...well, probably, you never know how form changes but it's hard to see.

Venables is going to be McClaren's assistant, which I like, but it's interesting. He was doing analysis for ITV during the World Cup, and I specifically remember him saying if he was in charge he would never drop Lampard or Gerrard, they're such good players that he'd build the team around them.

Now he's not in charge, but he certainly has a large influence. Building the team around them is interesting, it suggests he wouldn't just force them into the middle of a 4-4-2 even if it doesn't work. Are we looking at a 3-5-2? A diamond formation? Perhaps just a normal 4-4-2 with Gerrard on the right? I think a 4-5-1 is out of the question, Rooney as the lone striker and furthest forward is just madness, unless there's absolutely no choice.

Campbell, James, and Beckham have been dropped (forever, probably). Robinson, Kirkland and Foster are the goalkeepers. Bent has made it, despite the U21 call up, Rooney's been left out.

Am....am I Steve McClaren? That's everything I said!

Squad:

Robinson
Kirkland
Foster

Cole
Bridge
Brown
Carragher
Dawson
Ferdinand (guess he's fit)
Terry
G Neville
Young

Downing
Richardson
Gerrard
Lampard
Jenas
Hargreaves
P Neville (....urgh)
Lennon
Wright-Phillips

Ashton
Bent
Crouch
Defoe

No Andy Johnson yet, he might get a chance at some point but not now. I like Brown, but I really did expect Woodgate to get the nod (King probably will over either when fit). While I don't really want P Neville over Parker and Reo-Coker, I'm not too bothered because I know he wouldn't be there if Carrick and King were fit.

Bents a weird one, wonder how that happened.

Anyway its an interesting squad, especially upfront, it'll be great to see how the new guys perform, as long as one of them can knock Crouch out of the team i'll be happy.

Wish he'd given out a few more first caps, but i suppose theres not a lot of point doing that a week before the start of the domestic season.

It's a 25 man squad, so it's hard to know who wouldn't have made it in a 23 man one, as it is at major tournaments. Certainly we can say Rooney, Owen, Joe Cole, King and Carrick would be in the squad if available, so you'd have to take two of these away AND replace another five to find out what McClaren's tournament squad would be right now. My guess would be:

Robinson
Kirkland
Foster

A Cole
Bridge
King
Carragher
Ferdinand
Terry
G Neville
Young

Downing
J Cole
Gerrard
Lampard
Jenas
Hargreaves
Carrick
Lennon

Ashton
Rooney
Owen
Defoe

United have offered kuzszak a 4 year contract. Its a bit wierd, his first season will be on loan and then after this season he will sign the contract. I dont know why they've done it like that but we've got him on a permanent deal so that is good.

Sir fergie and david gill have also said that they plan to offer rooney a contract for life. Rooney said that he would like to stay at united his whole career so they have decided that they will talk to him about a contract extension. Its great news knowing that we can have one of the best players in thbe world at the club for life, he seems really commited to United.

It'll be cool if more people sign up, but there's a good number of teams now.

Damn, another Mexican NT'er might go abroad.

Atlas is in negotiations with Real Madrid for Andres Guardado. The guy looked awesome in the WC game against Argentina, and had both he and Pardo not gotten hurt in the first half, the result might have been different. Offer stands at 2 million euros, with Atlas reportedly wanting way more (around 4-5). The kid is still very young (19 yo), so it'd be great to see him grow in La Liga.

For those of you that still have Sopcast installed, I believe the Bundesliga opener (Bayern Munich:Borussia Dortmund) can be found on the Shanghai Sports channel.

At work, so I can't confirm if it'll work or not. Game starts in about 20-25 minutes.

So how are the exhibition games going?

DC United - Celtic 4-0
MLS - Chelsea 1-0
Chivas-Barça 1-1
America - Barça 4-4
DC United - Real Madrid 1-1

Did I miss any? None were aired on TV and since theyre just exhibition games they dont get as much coverage. Still interesting though.

How did Hargreaves do in a more attacking role?

The word from Bayern Munich fans is that aside from one or two mistakes (early season blues), he was superb making great plays all over the field all day. They're not very happy with Santa Cruz right now, and are pissed that Podolski didn't get in until the 88th minute.

In MLS news, Red Bull NY announced the groundbreaking for their new stadium:

Wow. I'm impressed. It seriously outclasses anything else in the league, even the Fire's Toyota Park. This is more inline with what I envisioned when MLS started talking up "soccer-specific stadiums" in the USA. Should provide a great atmosphere if the Bulls ever field a team worthy of such a home. :lol

I like the stadium. Im glad to see the Red Bull deal brought some good, since obviously the name of the team sucks. Thats a real stadium.

Garber said that the one in the New York area would surpass anything we've seen in this country. Plus, Red Bull has experience I guess as Red Bull Salzburg's Wals Siezenheim Stadion looks really nice as well. I say it's about time that the club moved out of Giants Stadium and I'm impressed with what I see. There's no outside view so it's all about the game once you get inside the stadium, and the roof covers all of the seats. I think I'll be in Harrison Sept. 19 as I've waited for this for a long time. Oh and you're right this team has sucked since its inception (perhaps excluding the 2001 season where Mathis was on fire).

Shoot, that kicks the crap out of Toronto's digs...

It'll still be fun to see a MLS team playing here though, along with the U20 World Cup games. I just hope it's well supported...Toronto soccer fans have a habit of supporting every team in the world but our own. :lol

I know im contradicting myself but the stadium has the best skyline in the MLS.

I think the team will do fine in Toronto. Apparently there's already been 600 deposits for season tickets so it's 600+ as you only need one deposit no matter how many season tickets you're getting. MLSE just needs to advertise the product, and allow the supporters club (I'm guessing one will start up) to do their thing. At least you guys start off with a soccer-specific stadium unlike most of the teams.

Are you going to support them Shinobi?

Yeah, I plan to...certainly gonna go to a few games a year at the very least. I'll probably become a member in a couple months, get myself a couple of perks. I'm also planning to buy the eight game U20 World Cup ticket package that's on offer, though it'll be the cheapest one available ($192, plus the usual bend over in taxes and service charges).

The rumours about hargreaves joining United have resurfaced again. It looks like we will buy either him, diarra or senna. Ive always preferred to see hargreaves join United because I think he is young and he will adapt to english football with no trouble at all.

no way, my friend. hargreaves will stay in bayern. believe me.

I wouldnt have thought that Bayern would sell Hargreaves, especially to Man U, and i doubt Hargreaves is that insterested in a move considering the stick he's gotten from his countrymen over the years.

I saw an interview with him recently saying he'd love to play in the Prem at some point, and I reckon if it could happen this season he'd be fine with it. Hell, he was one of the few England players who fans would've carried off the field on their shoulders, as opposed to throwing him under a bus. He'd be a great fit at Man U, and I'd love to see the move occur as I'd get to see him more often.

Meanwhile the Special One says that the Reds could suffer a serious psychological blow if they lose tomorrow's Community Shield match against a "50% Blues squad" tomorrow. :lol One day someone will to publish a book featuring all the quips from Jose, Alex and Arsene.

Football365 do a weekly feature called quotes of the week and each week its usually filled with crap that those three say.

The best thing that mourinho has said was when he called wenger a voyeur and a man who is obsessed with chelsea. He went on to say that they have a 120 page document of what Arsene has said. Not only is that the saddest thing Ive ever heard, but doesnt that make mourinho the voyeur if he is keeping note of everything wenger has said about chelsea :lol ?
