Makelele states case for USA

Chelsea's Claude Makelele would consider joining David Beckham in America after admitting his future at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain.

The France international midfielder still has one year of his contract remaining at Chelsea but has revealed one of the options under consideration is to follow Beckham into Major League Soccer in America.

Makelele, 34, realises that the emergence of Mikel John Obi and Lassana Diarra will limit his chances of first team appearances for the Blues again next season.

Makelele was inspirational in helping Chelsea to win Premiership titles in 2005 and 2006 but told Telefoot: "I have not decided where I will play next season. I could remain with Chelsea, as I am under contract for next season.

"The United States is an option. It wouldn't prevent me from playing for France, ask the coach."

It was his insistence on remaining part of the France national team which upset his relationship with Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho last season.

Makelele had made it clear to national coach Raymond Domenech that he wanted to retire from international football after last summer's World Cup.

But Domenech continued to select Makelele and Mourinho made it clear to the player that if he wanted to remain part of his first team plans, he must cut down on his international football.

But Makelele now insists he would be delighted to play for his country in the Euro 2008 tournament and his desire to do so will only increase speculation about his future.

Makelele added: "If Raymond Domenech calls me up, of course I would be pleased to play Euro 2008 next summer."

It's amazing that Man Utd still really haven't found a true long-term replacement for Schmeichel after he left 8/9 years ago.:lol

I'd probably vote for Friedel's but I can't decide if I'm being biased, so I like Jaaskeleinen's next.

funnily enough, I thought that Jaaskeleinens's was one of the "easier" ones there, despite looking the most spectacular. still a great save of course

I think that Van der Saar is on a level with him. Of course he's too old to be considered long term, so you're right

I wouldn't say Van der Sar is on Schmeichel's level, but I think only a few goalkeepers at a time are that good and you're extremely lucky if you have one of them (Cech and Buffon would be two of them at the moment).

Van der Sar's like the next level for me, the very good keepers which most big sides would be after.

it's so difficult to say with keepers, but I'd put him up there. the one that stands out is cech for now, he has the potential to become the best ever - if you can even say such a thing.

I don't think you can

I can become the best ever if I want to, don't tell me what I can't do!

Petr Cech is amazing, Buffon as well. Buffon is an idiot though and if he keeps up the gambling he's gonna get banned from the sport.

When are we staring a new thread? I assume we are, unless someone just wants to get the mods to change the title.

h0pper can do it, he's new enough to still be our butt monkey.

Speaking of monkeys and butts, I just convinced one of my best friends, who's quite gullible (or could I just have said a girl?), that wild cats have claws around their anus and monkeys can't die.

Just a little insight into my world for you there.

Well I'm out, I wouldn't be able to take is seriously. I'd either make it Blackburn themed to the point of burning white and blue halves into your retinas, or I'd dedicate the whole first post to women's football.

:lol

I think we should wait until August, a week or 2 before the season starts. That way we won't scare too many people off with our transfer talk (maybe). I think you should start it.

Btw, the Premiership fixtures are gonna be released in 10 days.

you are an evil man.

I just watched a Seinfeld episode where Jerry convinces Elaine that War and Peace was originally called "War, what is it good for". For some reason this fits perfectly in

I'm not making it, I can't handle the pressure! I don't want the illusion of power, I want actual power. Other people lead, and I stay close and influence things, letting them take the fall when things turn out shit.

Are you typing in code Lakitu? I think I've cracked it...does the 5 mean nutmegged and the 6 mean girlfriend?

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"People in Denmark hate me, but I have no feeling yet what the reaction in Sweden is, other than they of course believe I am an idiot" - Identified only as "R" for his own safety, the Denmark fan who attacked referee Herbert Fandel during their game against Sweden at the weekend acknowledges that, in his home country at least, he's about as popular as a dose of crabs.

inside sport is on at the moment, story about Graham Poll.

I feel really bad for the guy. Genuinely bad. Also reminds me what a classless bunch of wankers Mourinho and his club are

I have no idea why anyone would be a referee in the first place. Thankfully there are enough suckers out there willing to take it up.

Interesting article about Eduardo da Silva who plays for....Croatia. He moved from Brazil to Zagreb when he was 15. His goalscoring record is impressive: 73 goals in 100 matches for Dinamo Zagreb (this season he had 34 goals in 32 matches), 8 in 12 for the Croatian U21's, and 7 in 12 for the full Croatian side. I wonder if he'll be able to make the transition to a bigger club and still be successful, or will he struggle like Kezman at Chelsea...

interesting

I wouldn't want to do it, it's a horrible job

it's an excellent report though

Having seen this feature, it seems ridiculous that the referee isn't allowed to speak to the media. Let's hope the FA figure out that letting us see them as people, letting them explain things, will make things better.

It's like road rage. Road rage happens because you can't see people's reactions, you can't hear them apologise or their facial expression or their tone, you just assume they're a jackass and think they own the roads. Yet the same people who get roadrage can bump into someone walking down the street and be perfectly pleasant, because they get all those things.

This is similar, so long as they're not allowed to talk, the fans will get mad and assume they're just arrogant assholes who don't care and never think they're wrong.

absolutely. The other thing is: if referees were allowed to repeat what players and managers said to them, these people would think twice to open their gob.

At the very least they should be allowed to explain their actions. **** knows what the FA is afraid of.

I was wondering when someone was going to start another thread. Just give me the word.

THEY call it the Beautiful Game.

But I discovered an ugly side to it on a recent trip to the land of football.

I've always cherished watching Premiership matches and idolising my heroes from the Theatre of Dreams.

Manchester United: There's only one Manchester ... and one United.

So imagine my euphoria when I had the chance to go on a 'pilgrimage' to England, during a season in which my favourites - from my childhood days - are crowned the champions.

It's where I also learnt that the often-uttered phrase 'fair play' does not exist.

At least, that was the impression I got after going behind the scenes on two conducted tours at London giants Chelsea and Arsenal.

I can reveal it's a dirty game, spelt with a capital 'D', when it comes to the dressing room. It's something you don't see on television.

I was almost shell-shocked when I learnt of the behind-the-scene tactics adopted by the 'home team', in order to gain a psychological advantage over the visitors, even before the first whistle is blown.

Flashback to the Champions League match between Barcelona and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this season.

I remember the controversy surrounding the away team dressing room when Spanish newspaper Marca revealed that it had just three showers and one mirror.

More revelations from The Bridge?

The tactics board for the away team is fixed right next to the door.

The regulations state that this door has to be kept open at all times, thus exposing the away team's tactics to the home side.

CUNNING PLOY

One can reasonably assume that, by now, the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafael Benitez would have found a way to counter this cunning ploy - by bringing their own tactics boards!

The Bridge also ensures that, for the away team, the players' lockers are placed directly below their seats, which means that Peter Crouch (arguably the giraffe among the Premiership herd) either has to squat really low or ask a team-mate to help him take his stuff!

But such inconveniences are not only to be found within Jose Mourinho's castle.

Our Chelsea tour guide revealed that at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium, the away team's dressing room is shaped in the letter 'L'.

Not only does it represent the word 'loser', Grin it also makes it difficult for the manager to make eye contact with his players when he delivers his talk.

I wonder if former Boro manager Steve McClaren recommended similar L-shaped rooms at the new Wembley, where the Three Lions will be playing their Euro 2008 Qualifiers later this year.

Champions League finalists Liverpool also have their own way of ensuring an uneasy welcome for the visiting team, according to the tour guide.

The floor at Anfield is thoroughly polished before a big match - so immaculately shiny that visiting players have to literally tip-toe on their boots to avoid slipping on it. Or they can use it to practise their diving!

And how do Chelsea overcome this problem? By getting their kitman to lay out a carpet on the floor.

But it is not all doom and gloom in dressing rooms.

The room where John Terry and his millionaire team-mates change is fit to be screened on 'Cribs' - the MTV show which features luxurious homes of celebrities.

A flat-screen television, DVD player and audio-surround system help players get ready in the minutes leading up to a big match.

I was in the Blues' seven-star dressing room on the eve of their final home match against Everton and watched as Chelsea staff placed the players' equipment in their respective cabinets.

SIX PAIRS OF BOOTS

It was a sight to behold. Each player has five or six pairs of well-polished boots ready. All the paraphernalia - towels, jerseys, training kits - were neatly laid out for them.

At Stamford Bridge, which hosts probably the most expensive band of soccer millionaires ever assembled on this planet, the players' seats are grouped systematically.

The Englishmen - like John Terry and Frank Lampard - occupy one side of the room. Africans Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou are near the middle and, for good measure, since they speak French, Claude Makelele is next to them.

At Arsenal, the players are seated randomly. French captain Thierry Henry's place is at the centre. In his absence, vice-captain Gilberto Silva takes the seat next to him.

As one can pretty much expect, the dressing rooms of Arsenal and Chelsea boast top-of-the-range showers and physiotherapy facilities which may embarrass even Singapore's 6-star Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

The Gunners even have a hydro pool for players to rest their bodies after a gruelling 90 minutes of football.

One thing's for sure, my first trip to London has opened my eyes to what goes on in Premiership football.

Believe me, I had a ball of a time.

So, to my fellow Singaporean League devotees, I say: Go and soak in the atmosphere in and around the stadiums during matches.

It's out of this world, something you will never experience by merely sitting in front of your television sets.

And who says footballers live a pampered lifestyle?

I don't think six pairs of boots are enough for a match!

Int5erest5ing.

Wait is this guy from Singapore? If so, then no s*** he's gonna be impressed by English stadiums and their dressing rooms! Professional athletes get the finest treatment, that's not news to me. Here in the US, some universities even paint the visiting team locker room pink or other colors that are nauseating.

He came off as almost resentful that footballers have such luxuries.

Do you think players like Ronaldinho came to Nou Camp to play on dirt fields with rolled up balls of paper and then retire to a dressing room fit for farm animals like they did when they were kids?

Chelsea move in to snatch Alves

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly hoping to snatch long-term Liverpool target Daniel Alves from under the nose of Real Madrid

The Brazilian full-back, who plays for Sevilla, has been a target of Reds boss Rafael Benitez for some time, but now Chelsea are confident of sealing a deal, despite claims in the Spanish press that he was on the verge of joining Real.

The Sun claims Blues academy director Frank Arnesen met with Alves' agent at the Hilton hotel in London last Friday to discuss a potential move and that the Blues will offer Paulo Ferreira or Khalid Boulahrouz in exchange.

Alves first shot to prominence in Sevilla's march to the UEFA Cup in 2006 when they defeated Middlesbrough 4-0 in the final and was widely tipped for a summer move to Anfield, but the two clubs could not agree a fee and the move collapsed.

The 24 year-old, who is tied to Sevilla until 2012, has won five caps for his country but possesses Spanish citizenship, meaning he can move to a team in any EU country without requiring a work permit.

Lol @ white kit.

Not neccessarily...Vieria posed in a couple of pics for the home maroon jersey before he was sold.

That said, I'm not worried about the Henry talk...there was far more reason to be concerned last year, and even then I considered it a 50/50 shot of him staying or leaving.

Of course if Arsenal miss out on both Ribery and Malouda, that could change things...

I mostly like the kit BTW, but I still think it should be the third jersey. My one major gripe is the hooped socks...it isn't quite as eye jarring as the ones they used in the mid/late 90's, but it's still pretty ****ing ugly. Solid white or solid maroon would make that kit look boss.

~_~

And to think we were priced out of a move for Alves last year, damn why did Liverpool have to be so poor... in relation to the other top 3 clubs.

I don't understand why Alves is wanted by so many English clubs. Have they seen him play? Hell, have they seen him at all? He's tiny. He will get crushed. Maybe they will use him as a winger. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense.
