On to the teams:
A
Venezuela: I don't know the first thing about this team. Only one player plays in Europe. Will have to fight with Bolivia over the third place, to try and qualify for the next round.
Uruguay: A traditionally strong team, missed the last WC after a defeat against Hiddink's Australia. I still remember that match, it was broadcast live on Dutch tv. Look out for Fenerbahce defender
Diego Lugano and ofcourse
Diego Forlan. I heard
Recoba already managed to get himself injured (again, and again etc). :lol
Peru: With just a few players not playing in the Peruvian league, Peru has an exceptionally strong squad. Their starplayers are strikers
Jefferson Farfan (PSV) and
Claudio Pizarro (Chelsea)
Bolivia: Not a clue about their players. Only
Pena is nowhat famous, as he plays for Villarreal. Will fight for third place with Venezuela.
B
Brazil: Even without starplayers like Ronaldinho and Kaka, they're favorites to win it. Some of the not so well known players like
Afonso Alves (Heerenveen),
Mineiro (Hertha Berlin),
Elano (Shaktar Donetsk),
Alex Silva (Santos),
Kléber (Santos) and
Josué (Sao Paulo) are bound to make an impact, if Dunga lets them. Man United fans will be watching
Anderson with particular interest (who is the second youngest player at the Copa America).
Chile: Are extremely unlucky to be in this group. Will challenge Ecuador for the third place.
Mexico: A strong team, with youngsters like
Guardado and
Castillo (and second keeper
Ochoa) combined with a lot of experience.
Marquez (Barca) is their absolute starplayer. Should do well as a team, finishing second in the group.
Ecuador: Suprisingly strong in last WC qualifying (finishing third behind only Brazil and Argentina) and the WC itself (narrowingly losing to England in the round of 16l), Ecuador no longer has the home advantage of playing at an extreme high altitude. Should be able to beat Chile to the third place. Hell, the might even cause an upset by not losing to either Brazil or Mexico. I'll be keeping an eye out for
Edison Mendez, who scored an
important goal against Arsenal in the CL last year.
C
Argentina: My personal favorites for the title. Players like
Tevez,
Messi,
Cambiasso,
Riquelme,
Crespo and
Heinze don't need an introduction. Keep an eye out for Boca's
Rodrigo Palacio, an extremely skillfull striker. Let's hope Argentina shows us some
beautiful football (best played goal of the WC).
Paraguay: A few high profile players (
dos Santos, Santa Cruz). Should be quite a challenge to both Columbia and the USA. Watch out for striker
Oscar Cardozo, who was just signed by Benfica for some 9 mill Euro.
Columbia: Don't know much about them, really. Won the tournament back in 2001.
USA: Quite a different team compared to the one that attended the gold cup, it'll be interesting to see how the youngster do it. But more importantly, how will the USA fare without Beasley?! :lol I hope to see
Nguyen get some playtime.
