this Rodrigo Palacio rumour is popping up left, right and centre now and apparently he's supposed to have a medical at the club tomorrow.

I have to admit that I know nothing about the guy so it's difficult to tell if he's a centre forward or if he can also play on the wing. But my suspicion that Eduardo might be used more as a winger is not out of the question now.

I don't know if we really needed another striker if this is actually true. Van Persie, Adebayor, Eduardo, Walcott, Bendtner and another one? 15 million pounds is quite a hefty sum too, Wenger must think this guy is something very special.

:lol
thanks. luckily I'm going for a couple of weeks and not just a few days.

I am also going to reserve my tickets for the Salzburg v. Arsenal game next Wednesday. Should be good, it's the Stadium opening and the first time for Eduardo and Sagna in an Arsenal shirt. The rest of the team will be back for that game too.

well, since nothing is going on I shall spam the thread with this little part from an interview with Peter Hill-Wood:

How important is it for Arsenal that Arsène Wenger extends his stay beyond this season?

I very much hope he will. It's very important. He's done a marvellous job for the last 10 years or so. He looks pretty fit to me and I think he enjoys himself still. He's got a good job and I'm hoping he'll stay with us.

Are you talking to him about it now?

We had a fairly lengthy conversation recently and that went very well. Hopefully, in the not too distant future we'll have something positive to say about it. I'm confident he'll stay.

It really looks like Wenger is about to sign a new contract. I really hope it's gonna happen soon (before the season starts), it would give so much stability and believe to the club.

Two thumbs up from me. C'mon Wenger, get it done before hadareud's vacation.

it would definitely be our biggest signing this summer

edit: allegedly Freddie Ljungberg was not on the teams flight to Austria today. gone after all or just a lie?

Breaking news:
Police raid three football clubs
Police have raided three football clubs as part of an investigation into alleged corruption in football.

Newcastle United is believed to be one of the clubs raided but the other clubs involved have yet to be named.

The operation is not connected to Lord Stevens' ongoing Quest inquiry into the Premiership and was "totally independent", police said.

Search warrants were executed on the club premises and two homes between 0730 and 0900 BST.

A police spokesman said: "We can confirm that search warrants were served at three football clubs and the homes of two individuals in connection with corruption in football and its impact on owners and shareholders."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said they were aware that "an operation" had been carried out by their London colleagues at St James' Park, the home of Newcastle United.

Newcastle, Bolton & Pompey apparently, so this investigation has nothing to do with the Lord Stevens report, but it dug up the exact same culprits :lol

Edit: Wait...BBC is saying Rangers are the second club and the 3rd one hasnt been named.

Oh look all Souness managed teams so far

We don't really know anything though, aside from Newcastle and Rangers. We don't know what they're being investigated over, we don't know if they're guilty anyway...need a lot more information.

Is it bungs, is it match fixing (it better ****ing not be), is it just some sort of dodgy financial dealings...who knows?

There's a slight nasty side to me which is saying I hope it's something bad enough to get Newcastle relegated, 'cos they have some tasty morsels there who probably have relegation release clauses.

Sheppard loved his release clauses so much, i wouldnt be supprised if Owen has a 'allegations of match fixing' release clause.

If they dont get a record fine, even if they didnt do anything, Eggy should take them all (including Rangers) to court. 2 Wrongs dont make a right, but im willing to be 4 just might.

Wonder what it is? :D

They've been raided by these guys:

The Fraud Squad changed its name to the Economic Crime Unit in June 2004.

The change reflects the breadth of cases and issues dealt with by the unit, and brings it in line with the ACPO ‘Economic Crime Portfolio’ which the unit comes under.

Within the unit there are three teams, Confiscation, Major Fraud and Money Laundering.

The Confiscation Team are all accredited financial investigators and the primary function is the recovery of assets from convicted criminals and also pre charge restraint of assets.

The Money Laundering Team investigates serious and complex cases of Money Laundering. They are also responsible for dealing with ‘consent to transact’ issues received from the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). Within the team is a Financial Intelligence Development Officer who is responsible for the processing of suspicious transaction reports received via SOCA from the regulated sector and the development of intelligence package requests. The team also undertake the further detention inquiries relating to cash seizures.

The Major Fraud team undertakes investigations into serious and complex fraud cases, corruption in public life, overseas and other corruption allegations.

The unit is based at Loddon Valley Police Station and at Woodstock Police Station.

So something along those lines.

Beckham and him are good mates too
Interesting - there's also an announcement that the US is set to name a Spanish-speaking technical director to oversee development here in the US. When Capello was quoted about MLS, he actually just said:
'They have contacted me from the United States, however I must think about it,' Capello told Monday's Gazzetta Dello Sport without naming the U.S. team.

'It would be a new experience that would intrigue me not for the money but to see if anyone could make American soccer take off.'
Which makes me think that maybe he's in the running for the tech director job and not an MLS one.

yeah, I think that's more likely. A man like Capello could definitely be helpful in bringing your football forward

I don't think Capello and Beckham are actually mates

I think he'll do well away from United. Can't believe they got £5.5m for him though, even given that.

Given that Park's out till January, Richardson's gone and Giggs is soon enough turning 34, looks like Nani should get plenty of chances to show what he can do.

Man Utd fans will celebrate - Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Richardson

dancelikethereisnotomorrow.gif :lol

Actually Keane knows him well. They have played and trained together for almost 6 years. If he is willing to pay such a high price (2m too high considering his performance in United, even though he was an English international...), he thinks he can do like he did in WBA rather than sh*tty performance now.

It is the best piece of business we do in market since 2000, maybe except Ronaldo.

And Hargreaves will be number 23 tomorrow then

just found a way to watch all the bbc channels online, really good stuff.
not that anyone will be interested, but I'm still quite proud of myself.

Ahm, Wenger.

*cries* I never thought Id be so happy to see a player leave.... Good bye Richardson we'll miss your mediocre play and your tendency to give the ball away during crucial build ups. Bus mostly what we'll miss is the laughter...

Few games to look forward to tomorrow, thank god.

United are playing Urawa Red Diamonds at 11.05am (UK times) and Ferguson says he'll play Van der Sar, Brown, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Carrick, Scholes, Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney and someone else, so a strong side. No Neville, Hargreaves, Nani or Anderson, but that makes sense as they're either recovering from injury or have been at a tournament this summer.

Liverpool are playing Bremen at 7.15pm, and I know Torres is making his debut and I suspect that means it'll generally be a strong side, though I don't know that bit.

And if you're an insomniac, Chelsea are playing Suwon Bluewings at 4am (Wednesday technically) and they played very strong sides last game so I see no reason that'll change.

So Marlon Harewood has been spotted at Villa's training ground...

causing 1081 responses in less than 7 hours on a Villa board....not all of it good :lol

Speaking of Chelsea friendlies, I didn't see any discussion of it (as our Chelsea fans rarely come out of the woodwork), but they beat Club America a few days ago. I don't really care about that, but Malouda scored one and set up the other, so a good start for him.

I wonder if Chelsea are going to go back to a 4-3-3 (or 4-5-1, whatever you want to call it) with Malouda. He on the left wing, Robben on the right supporting Drogba...it's like the good old days of Robben and Duff. Alternatively Malouda and Joe Cole if Robben is sold.

I don't think anyone thinks the 4 central midfielders formation was a success. Except against Barcelona, and they can always switch to that when it seems like it'll work.

Given the current squad and assuming a winger is gonna be sold (I'll say Wright-Phillips, but it could be Robben in which case promote J Cole and put W-P in the second team) here would be my teams:

-------------------Cech-------------------

Ben Haim---Terry---Carvalho---A Cole

--------Sidwell---Essien---Lampard-----

--Robben----------------------Malouda--

------------------Drogba------------------

/////////////////////////////////////////////

------------------Cudicini-----------------

Johnson----Alex----Ben Haim----Bridge

--------Mikel---Makelele---Ballack------

--J Cole---------------------------Kalou--

------------------Pizarro------------------

Others:

Hilario
Ferreira
Diarra
Sinclair
Shevchenko

Alright, I've cheated And put Ben Haim in both, but he would be reserve centre back even if he was first choice right back. And it's no problem, Ferreira and Diarra could both cover that position if Ben Haim had to go centre back and Johnson right back.

There's just...there's no weaknesses. Either team would make the CL at least, and even the spares would make it into top Premiership sides (except Hilario).

They played at Stanford, which is about 45 min South of me. My coworker went to the match, so I'll ask him what he thought. I couldn't bring myself to spend $50 to watch Chelsea play.

Buying all of our disgarded crap this summer eh? How are you set for defenders with wacky hair?

He's scottish!

To be fair though Martin O'Neill had Emile Heskey scoring goals at one point so Marlon should be on 20 a season at least.

You said it, brother. Duff was injury prone, but I was quite sad after he was sold. He had great pace and was undervalued as a playmaker (could put in some great balls and 1-2s.)

Chelsea were downright DEADLY when they had blistering pace down the wings. For some reason they weren't happy with this and decided to buy up every central midfielder from Africa to Europe.

For this reason, I'm very happy with the Malouda signing, but selling Robben would be an enormous error. Seeing Robben and Duff go within a few years would make me very frustrated, especially since Chelsea usually only play with one striker.

the under 19 Euro started today by the way, Austria are playing Spain as we speak.

It's on Sopcast if anyone is interested

edit: oh, the address would be useful I suppose:

Are you in Austria hadareud?

Hammers are there pre-season training, you could go see if you can wind up Craig Bellamy (how hard could it be?)

Hey Cornballer I hear there's an announcement concerning San Jose at the All-Star Game this Thursday. You psyched?

Definitely. Have to wait and see what happens during the announcement, but early indications are very positive.

Can we have our old players back, too?

Right, how many age groups and international tournaments are there this summer? It's annoying me now, why are there teams for every year? 19 year olds, 20 year olds, 21 year olds...can we not group these together? If you're a good enough 19 year old you're probably already in the U21s, so the 19 year olds we get aren't the best.

They are in Bad Radkersberg, near Graz. There's a game on Saturday against in Graz...apparently.

I assume since so many clubs use Austria there is some better source of info for all the matches taking place than West Ham websites.

yeah, half the Austrian U19 team is actually at the U20 World Cup in Canada - I suppose it's the same for the other nations.

I agree that 3 tournaments for guys that are 3 or 4 years apart is slightly exaggerated.

There's a chance that I go to Graz at some point this weekend, so it may be an option. Real Madrid are close to my hometown, so I'll see a match with them too.

Quite some football in the next 2 weeks, excellent.

I think the countries in this hemisphere are in a similar bind with the Pan-Am games going on. It's another youth tournament, but I don't know what the age cutoff is. The US is sending some college kids.
