He's from Brisbane, right? I jokingly call everyone with the last name Davis cousin but he might actually be distant family to me. A strain of my dad's clan ended up in Queensland a good long while ago. :lol

Interesting... Apparently Billy Beane (from the A's) was a major reason why Lew got involved with getting the Quakes back. Sounds like he might have a (small?) role in running the Quakes, as well.
Quakes on a shoestring budget forever confirmed.

So I'd be surprised if we don't see at least 6 more buys for City before August 31st.
yes plz.

I was reading a story in MEN that was saying Sven STILL doesn't know what his transfer budget is. That can only mean there's no ceiling. (Always the optimist.)

Figured I'd post this for now...

Portsmouth are preparing a £12m "swoop" for Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe. (Daily Star)

Middlesbrough are on the verge of signing Luke Young from Charlton but have ruled out selling Yakubu to Manchester City. (Various)

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce will talk to Kieron Dyer about speculation linking the midfielder with a move to West Ham. (Various)

Celtic have launched a £2m bid for Paris St Germain defender Bernard Mendy. (Daily Record)

Gabriel Heinze could go to court over Manchester United's refusal to let him join Liverpool. (Various)

Boss Sammy Lee has told Nicolas Anelka he can leave Bolton if a Champions League club comes in for him. (Daily Star)

OTHER GOSSIP

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is about to join the battle to buy Arsenal. (Various)

Fifa are still waiting to receive a formal request from either West Ham or Manchester United regarding the Carlos Tevez transfer. (The Sun)

Jose Mourinho says his Chelsea players will go easy on David Beckham if the Englishman makes his LA Galaxy debut against them on Saturday. (Daily Express)

AND FINALLY

John Pantsil missed West Ham's pre-season tour of Austria because he destroyed his passport by leaving it in his trousers when they went through washing machine. (The Sun)

So errmmm Bernie Ecclestone then..... :-/

Well he's English and very rich...though pretty old so I don't know what happens when he dies. They might accept a bid from him just to ensure the club doesn't go to a foreign owner though.

I'm watching Bolton - Lyon, and Lyon's new forward, Keita, is rubbish. Doubt that means much to us, not until the CL at least, but still. Just his play has been bad, but I look at his stats and they're terrible too for a forward. He cost £12m! Normally flops who cost that much at least did well at their former clubs, I don't understand this one at all. Worst buy this summer.

I don't know if I hope Portsmouth do get Defoe or don't. On the one hand they're the team supposedly chasing Camara with us, so Defoe would likely stop their chase, but on the other hand they're getting annoyingly close to having a squad that could compete strongly for 5th place, just a few more players off.

EDIT: And I'm definitely gonna watch LA Galaxy - Chelsea tonight, regardless of whether Beckham plays. Partly because I want to see how Chelsea are shaping up, but also for my first glimpse of Galaxy. I want to know if they're as bad as the English press are making out.

I haven't really read a whole lot of the English press coverage of GaLOLaxy but when they knock the club for being terrible it's kind of vague to me since the roster changes weekly (if not semi-daily). So when they talk about the team sucking I think to myself, "Are they talking about sucking three weeks ago sucking or sucking four days ago sucking?" (There's a difference.)

Someone at the Express must have got a present from Eggy because they've linked us with Gudjohnsen (Barcelona) and Mancini (Roma) this morning. There's zero chance of us getting Mancini but that'd be hawt if it happened.

You know, I'm surprised Arsenal don't make more of their friendlies to promote their brand. United have had massive success in Asia (apparently there's 70m odd United fans world wide, 40m odd of which are in Asia), Liverpool are also having a go at Asia, Chelsea are desperately trying to take the US...Arsenal just hang around Europe like Blackburn. There's even talk of United heading to Africa too soon, which makes sense. They've got Asia, you're not going to get the rest of Europe or South America when they have their own sides, Australia's too far to go and pointless anyway as it has a small population, the US aren't really interested...so Africa's next. They adore their football, and while parts are obviously poverty stricken, not everywhere is.

Lyon look like they're gonna beat Bolton, 1-0 with a few minutes to go. It should be 5-0 frankly, I should put Jaaskelainen in my fantasy team. Samuel at left back is a major weakness, anyone with a pacey right winger is going to tear him apart.

I've always wondered why United haven't been more popular here than they are. Everyone seems to be a fan of one of London's clubs. (ArsenaLOL particularly) It's like the country falls into the ocean past Enfield. :lol

(I'm not implying that you couldn't find a single supporter in Estados Unidos, it's just that it's definitely not a good example of that old saying that everybody loves a winner.)

Arsenal fans can let out a sigh of relief, looks like Ecclestone is a passionate Arsenal fan and in it for the football. Here's what he's said about a possible takeover:

"If somebody offers me something I think is good value, I will have a go. I'm interested in anything if it's cheap enough."

"Flavio (Briatore, Renault boss) and I were interested in Chelsea not so long ago," confirmed Ecclestone.

"I do go to Chelsea. Flav and I went to matches. I go when I've nothing else to do."

Awesome.

Manchester City will beat Tottenham to the signature of Atletico Madrid's Martin Petrov for £6m. (Daily Mirror)

Wigan are set to sign Fulham's Michael Brown in a £2.5m deal in the next few days. (Daily Mirror)

Birmingham will go back to Tottenham, just days after agreeing a fee for Egyptian Mido, to also sign his compatriot Hossam Ghaly. (Daily Star)

Derby are set to sign Portsmouth defender Andy Griffin in a £500,000 deal. (The Telegraph)

Fulham boss Lawrie Sanchez is waiting to learn if his offer for Cork City forward Rory O'Donovan has been successful. (The Telegraph)

Manchester City want Liverpool's Peter Crouch and/or Bayern Munich's Roque Santa Cruz. (The Telegraph)

Middlesbrough claim they are still in with a chance of landing Manchester United striker Alan Smith in a £6m deal. (The Telegraph)

Sunderland have failed to sign Bobo Balde from Celtic. (The Telegraph)

West Ham are ready to splash £26m on Roma winger Mancini, Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen and Newcastle midfielder Kieron Dyer. (Daily Express)

Sam Allardyce's innovative training methods at Newcastle have led to problems. His vibrating muscle toner machines give players an uncontrollable urge to visit the toilet. (The Sun)

Oops, I've been saying Mancini is 30, but he's nothing of the sort. I've obviously just looked at his wikipedia page, saw 30 (his squad number) and assumed it's his age. He's actually 27, which makes it even weirder that Benitez doesn't want him.

Apparently he is available. He fell out with Totti (who they'll never get rid of) and Roma have bought Giuly and Wilhelmsson (plus co-ownership of Esposito), all of whom are wingers, so it seems like they're replacing him before they sell him.

I dunno if West Ham could get him; maybe. They're pretty wage-happy, and that can attract certain players who might otherwise go to bigger clubs. Apparently Inter might want him to replace Figo, so I don't think there's any hope if that's true, but if not then like I say...maybe.

If they got Dyer, Mancini and Gudjohnsen, I think I'd have to cry myself to sleep. All they'd then need it a quality left back (though I thought McCartney did alright...but they need a left back regardless).

I want to watch the game because I want to see what chelsea are like. I hope we get to see their new signings during the game. However I'm not sure if I can watch the game because its on at 4:30am in dubai. I'm on summer holidays so I should be able to stay up. I'll just read harry potter until the game starts.

We might see a back to form adriano next season. He says that for the last two years he's been dealing with alcoholism ever since his dad passed away two years ago.

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jul21f.html

I'd love to see a back to form adriano. When he's on form, he really is one of the best strikers in the world. The last two years have been a real waste for him. It would be nice to see him get his career on track.

They just might be that bad at least as of recently. Karakand is right though, there's a difference between how bad they were three weeks ago and how bad they were four days ago.

I already have him on my fantasy team.:D And yes I worry about backline this year with Ben Haim going to Chelsea and Gardner being injured. Samuel has been lackluster this entire tournament and unless Little Sammy Lee gets a new left back I feel there won't be another top 8 finish this year. The offensive side of the ball has improved IMO, but it's strange how many midfielders there are on the roster compared to defenders and forwards.

Lucas Neill AND Harry Kewell both missed penalties for Oz against Japan last night, meaning they are now out of the Asia cup...

which is cool because i dont want Neill knackered by the start of the season.

werder bremen are beating beating bayern munich 1 - 0 so far, looks like its going to be a good game. its on GolTV if anyone is interested. There's gotta be a red card if the game carries on this way:lol .

edit: 1 - 1 Schweinsteiger

edit of edit: 2 - 1 Bayern. Great goal by Altintop

Thx for the heads-up, just caught Ribery's goal. Do you have the line-ups?

This is probably not the best idea in the world, but seeing as I've never gotten involved in any fantasy sports whatsoever, I'd like to get some input on my lineup.

So here goes. This is my current lineup:

--------------------Cech--------------------

Richards---Neville---Toure---Ingimarsson

Ronaldo---Fabregas---Landzaat---Mullins

------------Drogba---van Persie-----------

And on the bench I have:

James(GK), Campbell(F), Carsley(M), Pearce(D)

Besides James, my bench is a bit weak but I'm hoping I don't have to use any of them.

What do you guys think?

Ok, then I will drop him. I didn't know much about him. Probably should've researched him lol. Thank you.

Japan knocked Australia out of the asia cup...

things i took away from watching the game (all of which i almost knew already)

1) Kewell is a moaning cheat, but the ref owned him from the start - yellow card for a blatant penalty dive attempt
2) Japanese have no physical game AT ALL
3) Australians can`t play in humidity
4) Japan defense still crap
5) Japan attack still woeful (nice take by takahara though for his equaliser)
6) Shwartz is more annoying that Kewell - waggling his finger at Japanese players a la Edgeworth from Phoenix Wright after he saves a shot from them, grinning like a fool
7) Japan aren`t bad at penalties
8) Kawaguchi is still really friggen good at penalty saves
9) Japanese second penalty was the funniest penalty i`ve ever seen - ball is going so slow, i assumed the whistle had blown for a retake - Shwartz stood there and watch it roll in.

West Ham lost another friendly today, 2-0 to Lazio. Bellamy missed a penalty, he truly is a hammer now.

Not encouraged by our pre-season form so far, hope it picks up.

Galaxy v.s. Chelsea about to start... been tons of hype on ESPN all day (and really all week) but it sounds like Beckham is only going to play about 10 minutes. Just as much hype about the Will Smith/Tom Cruise thrown party for him tommorrow.

Crowd is sold out, and shockingly (people in LA are notorious for being late arrivals) is there early.

Chelsea line up:

Cech
Ferreira
Carvalho
Terry
Ben Haim
SWP
Essien
Lampard
Malouda
Kalou
Drogba

all this Beckham coverage is so embarassing :lol

Galaxy was hanging pretty tough for the first 20 minutes, but Chelsea is starting to take over. Still scoreless though.

Eva Longoria, Katie Holmes, Drew Carey, and Gov Ah-Nuld sightings so far.

Nil-Nil at half.

1-0 Chelsea in the 49th minute, I think.

With the amount of cuts they do to Becks they should've just had a picture in picture with him the entire match. :lol

You try living in an alpha city that has almost no mass transit!

Beckham running and warming up on the sidelines in the 66th minute.

Donovan blows a header in the 70th minute that should have tied it up.

Beckham in during the 77th minute.

1-0 Chelsea. Galaxy looked pretty decent for a "pub team". The gap between the MLS and the European teams is a lot less than the Europeans would like to think.

-Tigres > Chelsea
-You win this round Chelsea, but I'll always have 16 October 2004 and don't you forget it!
-I'm sick of Emo Donovan. Lalas better not be a moron and gut the team to get another designated player slot to keep him. (Who am I kidding, that's definitely going to happen.)
-If I wasn't so meh on the new kit and logo I would have already ordered an Xavier jersey. If you need me to fake an injury to get you some steroids Facebook me, Abel!

Welcome to the club. The sad thing is that I can see the DP slot for San Jose being used to get Donovan. Cornballer am cry.

I watched on ESPNHD, and I dont know if Telefutura did the same but...

The amount of cuts to Becky and the celebs was sickening.

In the middle of the game (ball moving) they cut for a minute to show a full-screen Governator being interviewed. WTF

:lol :lol

MLS is about the same as League 1 in our league system (so 3rd tier).
