I was reading about Dong earlier, apparently he's only playing pre-season because he's not eligable for a UK work permit yet. Good news is he'll be able to claim UK citizenship in December so he'll be all clear to join the full squad then, Fergie seemed pleased about that.
He'll be a great addition to the squad. It will take him some time to adapt and freally show his true colours, but he's got all everything to become a very good footballer. He's quick, he's quite skillful and adove all he's got fantastic composure. Im not just saying that because of his goal yesterday, but last pre season he scored another great goal with a very good finish. He looks like he's relaxed in front of goal.

Think i see why West Ham have been linked with a lot of right wingers lately...

LONDON, July 19 (Reuters) - West Ham United midfielder Shaun Newton has been suspended for seven months after testing positive for cocaine, the Football Association said on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old Londoner, who the FA said would be subject to target testing throughout the suspension, was tested after West Ham's FA Cup semi-final win over Middlesbrough on 23 April.

"The ban, which applies to matches but not training and other football activities, starts May 20, the date on which he was suspended by his club," the FA said on its website.

HEY GUYS WHO WON THE WORLD CUP

:lol :lol :lol

I'd love to see Arsenal land Buffon, but with his desire to stay in Serie A I don't see it happening. Having said that Juvi says they're not going to sell him to AC Milan, so that might help them out. Buffon though says he might well stay with Juvi if they want him badly enough, even if it means playing one or two years in Serie B. If he does that he'd earn my respect, though how Juvi would still be able to afford his salary is beyond me.

I am looking forward to seeing which club WORLD CUP WINNING ITALIAN GOALTENDER Gigi Buffon signs with.

Weren't you in the football thread a year or so back asking how certain things worked and why players did certain things when tackled or injured? How's the Superfan bit working out for you these days?

it's always good when the worldcup ends. The superfans usually disappear within a few weeks afterwards. I am looking forward to this.

I don't know if he is or he isn't, but that World Cup thread was a Kubrickian nightmare.

Lay off roney and his wierd sleeping habits. He isnt the only player who has got wierd habits or superstitions. Here are some other players who seem a little insane.

http://www.football365.com/features/fun_features/story_189045.shtml

"I'll put my Pepsi cans in the fridge and if there's one too many then I'll put it in another cupboard somewhere. I've got that problem. I'll go into a hotel room. Before I can relax I have to move all the leaflets and all the books and put them in a drawer. Everything has to be perfect" :lol

"He’s got this thing about washing his hands. He washes them, I’m not joking, 15 times a day" - Stevie Gerrard's girlfriend Alex Curran.

"I always pour water down my face in the tunnel before I go out, and I also jump every time I step over the white line. It's not enough to wake me up. I don't even know why I do it" - Rio Ferdinand.

"I've got lots of superstitions. I try to cut them down as I have too many. I wear the same belts, same shoes, same aftershave - I've worn the same aftershave all season...Just stupid things really. If we've been on a winning run of games I won't change my boots. Someone pointed out to me last year that I've worked all my life to be a professional footballer, and yet it comes down to which aftershave I'm wearing as to how well I play!" - Gary Neville.

"When we are at home I always put my boxers at the back of my locker with my ring on top and my watch around my ring. I always warm up with my earring in as well and then after the warm-up I put that in the middle of my ring and then I'm ready to go" - Anton Ferdinand.

"I've got to have the same seat on the bus, tie the tapes round my socks three times and cut my tubular grip for my shin-pads the same size every game. I drive to games listening to the same Usher CD in my car...I always have to park my car in the same spot in the car park" - John Terry.

"I have lucky shin pads. I won the league with Chelsea in them. I left them at home at first, but then I wasn't firing in the friendlies so I got them sent over to Germany. I know superstitions mean nothing and it's all in your head really, but I've got so many it's not true. We'd be here all day talking about them. I never kick the ball in the changing room, I always use the same toilet before the game, there's thousands of them" - Joe Cole.

"I wouldn’t call it a ritual but I always put everything on my left first. My socks and my foot in the shorts but that’s more about routine I think but you could possibly view that as superstition" - Owen Hargreaves.

"In the warm-up, I would never shoot at the goal because I didn't want to waste a goal. I wanted to save those for the game. I'd always change my shirt in the second half if I hadn't scored in the first, but I'd keep wearing the same shirt if I had scored. If I ever went on a bad run, I'd always get a haircut" - Gary Lineker.

psycho gets his wish, Alan Smith's going back up front.

Thank ****.
Thnak God. Ever since ruud was rumoured to leave it looked like Smith would be put back upfront, but its good to hear fergie says that what he plans to do. Fergie's always played people out of position and I cant recall a time when it has ever been successful. He played rooney on the left wing for a while and rooney never looked as dangerous being played there. John O'shea was played in midfield and that was just awful, it was made even worse when he was playing alongaide fletcher. Smith was being played as a holding player and he looked very average. Smith has always played upfront and he plays there very well, he is no way a midfield player.

I thought O'Shea did really well in midfield when he had a long run in there with Giggs.

I hope that Thuram/Zambrotta to Barcelona thing is true, as it removes one of Neill's potential suitors, can't imagine they'd want yet another defender.

I wouldn't say £13m is particularly cheap for those two, though better for Cannavaro and Emerson. Perhaps we won't see too many bargain prices, and rather just players available who wouldn't have been.

Blackburn beat Accrington Stanley 3-0. I mean, alright, they're League Two so I'd expect a win, but both Roberts and Jeffers scored so that's pleasing.

EDIT: O'Leary has left Villa, by mutual consent. I might actually believe it was like that for once, as I don't think he was very happy with the club or them with him.

Ellis tries to divert attention from himself by buying out O'leary's contract... 2m that magically appears after it was said that we needed to sell to buy because we had no money... Ellis next please. Who could possibly want to manage this mess of a club?

It's nice to see such an article, and in celebration of that I'm now going to nitpick aaaaaall the little mistakes (to be fair, many are from emails he's got from fans who he's trusting to know what they're on about):

Portsmouth -- Reader comments included, "Blue-collar fans, blue-collar team, there are no executive boxes at their ground which means it's very rowdy and the club has no money"

The club has lots of money. And a new stadium on the way.

Blackburn -- Everyone agrees this is the dirtiest team in the EPL -- they even take a fair amount of pride in this fact.

Hey! We don't take pride. Alright, maybe in the same way a guy who's been in jail 7 times uses it to look cool, even though it's actually ****ed up and he knows it. He wishes he'd never been to jail or at least that no one knows about it, but everyone does know so he's either got to take the shit or pretend it's something to be proud of. That's the sort of pride we have.

and I couldn't gamble on the whole relegation thing.

*sputters in indignation*

But I'm keeping an eye on them.

That's more like it.

Reading -- The ultimate Cinderella story: They were recently elevated to EPL status for the first time in 135 years. Unfortunately, they have no fans -- I probably got three e-mails making their case. I don't want to be stuck with the EPL version of the Arizona Cardinals.

He says he doesn't want relegation candidates, but Reading aren't in his 9 definite "no"s?

West Ham -- Demoted

Relegated, damn you.

"Good for people who like '80s music and make references to George Michaels."

I don't even know what that means.

Manchester United -- Estimated number of "I don't care who you pick, just don't pick Manchester United" e-mails: At least 700-750. By all accounts, they're the New York Yankees of the EPL -- they outspend everyone else

Financially, they blow almost everyone out of the water

they're almost like a European All-Star team

5 years a...wait, never.

Along with Manchester United, the Blues outspend everyone else in the EPL

Correction: The Blues outspend everyone else in the EPL

I don't like "EPL" much either, too American. Almost like that's where the writer's from.

You might remember Terry as the only English player who showed up for the 2006 World Cup.

You might remember that he wasn't on top form and Rio was actually better for once and Hargreaves turned up. Though he's not English. So technically that's ok.

Manager Jose Mourinho...wears all black

Since when?

5. ARSENAL
• American Comparison: their prolonged championship drought ending in 2004

Well....they won it in 2002 and 1998, so no.

Probably the EPL's most popular team

Well....not by supporters, but probably generally the most popular team to those who support someone else.

Most Hated Rival: Tottenham Hotspur. Some call this the most heated rivalry in the EPL other than Newcastle against everybody.

Wuh? Who outside of the north-east hates Newcastle? Who even cares about Newcastle?

Man City - "Most of England hates them, they are filled with a bunch of thugs that are three to five years past their prime."

Again, do most of England hate them? Written by a United fan maybe? I don't think anyone cares about them. And I don't think they have a reputation as a bunch of thugs past their prime. Must have got mixed up from the Blackburn emails.

Sponsors: A travel company called Thomas Cook. It's a bad sign when you have a sponsor that nobody knows, right?

Everyone in the UK knows Thomas Cook.

Vacation Destination: That's a big fat N-O.

Fine, until...

(Newcastle) Vacation Destination: Not a complete disaster.

Come ooon, and...

(Liverpool) Vacation Destination: Only if you've been kidnapped.

Oh I'm sorry, is the European capital city of culture not good enough for you? I realise it's no Newcastle, but really...

Most Hated Rival: Sunderland, a team that can't even crack the EPL right now. That's a bad sign.

Cracking the Premiership isn't exactly easy. I'm not sure he quite understands the different levels of English football (not that Sunderland aren't shit).

Random Fact that I Found Interesting: Newcastle's No. 9 jersey is the most famous jersey in the EPL -- called the Shirt of Legends

I have never, ever heard of this. Not in aaaaaaall the years Shearer has worn it. I didn't even know there was a most famous Premiership shirt, therefore I must conclude that there isn't.

(Liverpool) the best player in the league

Well....it's not that simple. It's not a reaosn to pick them over Arsenal, Man Utd or Chelsea anyway, who could easily stake that claim too.

rivalry with London that mirrors Boston/New York

To be honest, I don't know what the rivalry between Boston and New York is, so maybe it's exactly like it. But if it's meant to be two directly competing major cities, one clearly beating the other, that's more like Birmingham and London or even Manchester and London.

he is also likely to be appointed England's new captain now that Beckham has stepped down

I'd say it's 60/40 in Terry's favour right now.

Most Hated Rival: Any of the London teams.

....

Everton?

Man Utd?

....London teams? I guess they don't like Chelsea much....but no.

The Spurs. This is important: You either call then "Tottenham Hotspur" or you call them "the Spurs," but no other option is acceptable.

Or Spurs.

Way back in the day, other English teams' fans would derisively jeer Tottenham fans, stereotyping them as Jews and calling them just about every anti-Semitic name you could call someone.

Way back in the day?

Spurs isn't a bad choice though. And he chose a Blackburn pic, so I give this article the thumbs up.

Also, it's not GOALTENDER it's GOALKEEPER :)

Ooooooh, I see. And I didn't even mention his dislike of anything to do with hooliganism, yet Chelsea is number 6 with no mention.

Seems like there's a lack of news today. Chelsea might be buying Cole and Roberto Carlos for a combined £20m, which might make Bridge available for loan at least.

Mourinho's said he only wants to make one more signing (though these two contradict that, though I suppose they are at least the same position), but I'm not so sure about that. We already had the bullshit "3 in, 3 out" from Kenyon a month or two back, something that made no sense the moment he said it, and I wouldn't be surprised if they sign more beyond left backs.

If the Huth move goes ahead, which I would still say is more likely than not, they've only got three centre backs. Three excellent centre backs, but if one gets injured/suspended they better goddamn hope nothing happens to the one of the other two. It's not like they have players in the squad who can play centre back at a push, you really would have to move someone completely out of position.

Not only that, but I expect Mourinho wants to play Gallas at right back (he won't be happy, but he'll be happier than he was at left back), as he doesn't seem to have much confidence in Ferreira and Geremi's really a midfielder. I'm surprised he hasn't signed someone specifically for that position, maybe he still will.

Anyway, if Huth goes I don't see how they can't buy someone else.

Wuh? Who outside of the north-east hates Newcastle? Who even cares about Newcastle?
everyone outside the north east likes newcastle in my experience. attacking play, comedy defending, funny accents, massive blokes with no shirts on..
he must have got a lot of emails from sunderland/boro etc fans

Again, do most of England hate them? Written by a United fan maybe? I don't think anyone cares about them.
I thought they were quite popular, see newacastle above without the fat blokes and the accent is less fun

Oh I'm sorry, is the European capital city of culture not good enough for you? I realise it's no Newcastle, but really...
If there's one place in the north to visit as a tourist, it's liverpool. newacastle for the nightlife maybe but even that's an acquired taste

Hnery is the best player in the premiership

The liverppol v london thing is just the north v london thing. liverpool v manchester on the other hand..

Everton?

Man Utd?

....London teams? I guess they don't like Chelsea much....but no.
The chelsea thing is only recent and everyone hates them anyway. i don't know where he's got that from.

He's changed it now! It's man united.

Yanks:
What do these mean?
The Boston Celtics, only if it were 1986 and Lenny Bias made the decision, "I'm never doing drugs."
and
A reader described them like this: "Ladies and gentlemen … your 2005 Atlanta Hawks! It's gonna be ugly." Besides, I could never root for a team named after a Yankee.

That a Red Sox fan would pick Spurs is absolutely bang-on predictable: a fan base that whines constantly about buying power when it can outspend 98% of the clubs out there, has a history of choking at key moments, pities itself relentlessly, and defines itself by beating or finishing ahead of one other team. Yankees fans don't care about the Red Sox nearly as much as the other way around, and it's the same for Arsenal and Spurs. We love to kick the shit out of our little brother, but we play in the CL and don't have time to sit around picking our noses and damning the scum down the Lane.

Oh and for the record, I hate both the Yankees and Sox: I support the Mets.

Stevie G: The Atlanta Hawks are the joke of the NBA, with an indifferent fan base losing constantly and never putting out a team that can compete. Len Bias was one of the greatest college basketball players in a long, long time who died of a coke overdose soon after being drafted by the Celtics.

Jeez guys, the article was supposed to be humorous. Of course it's laced with inaccuracies, it's effing Bill Simmons talking about futbol FFS. He was heavily entertained by the WC i'd assume, and now he wants to follow a team for a year. You can't expect him to be an authority on the subject, especially considering most of his info comes from the very fans of the teams in question.

Just be happy that the Premiership is getting that kind of exposure on ESPN.

I don't think we really care if the the Premiership gets exposure in the US, it's the richest league in the world anyway. However, if he's going to do an article on which team to start supporting, he might as well get it right. Some of the stuff is just nitpicking that would have improved the article, but you'd have to watch the Premiership for about 2 seconds to find out Chelsea have by FAR the biggest spending power and that United aren't even in the same league. Really shouldn't be getting such well known things wrong.

I liked how there was a picture of lucas neill next to the text about balckburn thugs

That's actually Kuqi, but I don't blame you for not recognising him, I like to pretend he doesn't exist too.

Mama Smurf said:

This, and the mentality that nothing really exists until Americans are involved in it somehow.

Seems like Duff is really leaving. I have a strong suspicion that Robben is too, bound for Real.

This leaves Chelsea with a problem though, who will they buy? Kaka will be difficult to get even for them.

I really don't think Robben's going to go. I think Chelsea would rather he rot in the reserves than go if he was that desperate (it's not like they can't afford to lose him on a free eventually), and I don't think he is.

I don't either, but it does look more and more like Maureenyo wants to play four central mids. I suppose he could put Robben in the hole behind Shevchenko, give him more of a free-roaming role, but I doubt it, even though I'd cheer it as it'd mean Drugbuh would ride pine.

No love for Makaay?

Well, I would take him for my favorite club (Eintracht Frankfurt)!

But I don't think that Makaay and Van the man playing at the same time would work.

It didn't work for the dutch national team either.

So it's factually proven that Materazzi didn't say anything racist. The bleeding hearts can officially shut the **** up now.

Also a little off topic, but I just picked up WE8 last night. Going through the training mode right now (this is my first ever WE), and god damn I wish my stupid friends would realize that just because a game doesn't hold your hand doesn't mean it "sucks". The animation and total control in this game is astounding.

The problem with me is that I don't have a favorite team for league play. When it comes to hockey, I cheer for my hometown, when it comes to football I cheer for my heritage... but when it comes to league play soccer, it's just a flip of the coin. Man U, Arsenal, no difference to me. I still like watching it just because of the high level of skill, but when you're not invested in a team, it's hard to really care who wins.

I suppose I could pick a random player like Cannavaro or Buffon and start cheering for whatever team they play for this season, but even that is pretty spotty.

That's why I love the World Cup (and Euro) so much, it gives me a team to cheer for.

Word. It's funny that he compared Arsenal to the Bosox, in terms of championship futility. :lol Arsenal's won five league titles in the last 17 years (second only to those bastards at Old Trafford), to mention nothing of their numerous FA Cup victories. Spurs on the other hand have won what, two trophies (and no league crown) in the last 30 years? Yeah, makes perfect sense that he's gonna root for them. :lol

I like the spirit of the article though, and it was entertaining to read...but as was mentioned, some of the inaccuracies are pretty glaring. Five minutes on Wikipedia would've fixed most of those mistakes.

That will be fun. I intend to watch as many of the big rivalry clashes this year as I can. I've never seen an Old Firm clash before for Pete's sake, and that's a fixture I intend to view at least a couple times this season.

:lol I'm already looking forward to Euro '08 qualifying (think it starts next month with a couple teams, with a full slate of games in September), and the under 20 World Cup that takes place here next year. I'm likely going to buy the 9 game ticket package that's on offer for the Toronto venue, which includes a quarter final, semi final and final. I'll be getting the cheapest seat of course, which'll work out to just over $200 Canadian...not a bad deal.

http://www.ticketmaster.ca/promo/lrapn1

I wish I was still in Vancouver for the Under 20s thing. Though I suppose then I wouldn't be in the UK for everything else football, so that doesn't really make sense.

Thuram and Zambrotta have officialy signed for Barca now. Time some Premiership sides got in on the act.

Schweet, the Chivas are up 2-1 on Velez Sarsfield @ the 85 min mark.

So the Copa Libertadores Semi's will be

Chivas (Mexico) v. Sao Paulo (Brazil)
Internacional (Brazil) v. Libertad (Paraguay)

Thuram signed for Barcelona, that will teach me to believe my Arsenal "insider" ever again.

Anyway, I'm in the process of moving, so this will probably be my last post for a while. Let me just say that I am going to the Bergkamp game and you are not :D

Have fun at the game...all indications is that Emirates Stadium is simply stunning.

I shouldn't laugh, but...:lol :lol :lol

Too bad about Thuram...I think he would've been a perfect stop gap for the next couple years at the Gunners. But it's hard to begrudge a move to Barca. Hell, I wouldn't have blamed Henry for making that move.

Meanwhile Buffon says he's going to stay at Juvi...a hell of a move on his part. As was said before though there were only a handful of teams he could really go, and even Arsenal was a bit of a wild card with Lehman still here and coming off arguably the best season of his career.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is likely to let Damien Duff and Asier Del Horno leave the club before the start of the Premier League season. Here's a quote from the special one, showing that he's still in top form...

"Look at my haircut - I'm ready for war."

Buffons decision is very admirable. Wilst Del Piero and Nedved have also said they are going to stay, they are old and not many top class clubs would have taken them because of their age. Buffon is still young for a goalie and could have probably gone to a big club, but he opted to stay at Juve. My respect for him has gone up.

So far its only been the spanish clubs that have taken advantage of Juve's relegation. No English clubs have made a move. Wenger siad that he wont buy a Juve player and he seems to be sticking to his word. Rafa and fergie said that they are monitoring the situation, but they've not made a move for anyone. Im happy that United have not said anything about Vieiera, I really dont want him to play for us,m it will just be too awrkward for the fans and for him. If Ruud goes i hope United try to get Trezeguet, he would fill the gap left by ruud. they play exactly the same role.

I can only imagine women around the country are in tears over his hair, wtf has he done? I hope his players follow, come on shaved head Carvalho!

There's a rumour that Duff might be stolen from Spurs' grasp by Newcastle, which I think would be very sensible, so long as they have money left over for a defender or two.

Did I tell you guys I won a signed Ronaldinho Barca shirt? I can't remember if I said about it before I moved or not. Anyway, I did. If they had won the world cup I might have sold it, but if anything I expect its value has depreciated since.

Don't really know what to do with it, I can't wear it as I don't dare wash it, I don't know if the ink he signed it with will run or not. I could frame it, but it's not like it was the shirt he wore in the Champions League final, it's not that special. So currently it's just hanging in my wardrobe.

EDIT: Buffon could alwasy go out on loan, save his club from paying his wages for a season or two, then have no problem going back when they look like returning to Serie A.

Don't Lazio and Fiorentina have any good players (except Toni)? All I ever hear is about Juve, but they weren't the only ones down. It doesn't even need to be the big clubs after them, surely some of the players good enough for Fiorentina and Lazio will be good enough for somewhere like Blackburn.

His haircut is great, He said that he did it because he's ready for war, but I doubt its actually going to intimidate anyone. Its better than when he doesnt shav e and his hair is scruffy, when he's like that he looks like a caveman.

Lucky you mama smurf, the signed shirt is cool. Ive got a signed shirt, unfortunately it isnt from anyone as cool as ronaldinho, its from O'shea. I actually got it signed by him when he came to my school so it feels quite special.
