43 min: Barcelona 1-1 Liverpool Liverpool equalise! A free-kick halfway inside the Barcelona half finds Bellamy whose header goes straight at Valdez who, inexplicably, is standing a yard inside his goal. Realising his error, he tries to push it out, but the linesman is already flagging for the goal. Bellamy charges off into the night, swearing at all and sundry, before doing his celebration ... a golf shot.

:lol

Meh, shitty goal

How about you stfu? A goal is a goal, Barcelona have scored their fair share of shitty goals too, so has Liverpool, so what's your point?

Anyway, evenly matched so far, I thought we had a nice 10 min start, but a very abysmal next 10 mins, Barca's goal was very good but it was a result of our poor defending. Reina has made some very important saves for us too. Boy am I relieved we scored...

Non european games being played today:

Libertadores

Nacional ? - ? Internacional
Parana ? - ? Real Potosi
Flamengo ? - ? Maracaibo
Cienciano ? - ? Toluca
Deportivo Pasto ? - ? Santos

CONCACAF

Puntarenas FC 0 - 0 Houston Dynamo
CD Olimpia ? - ? DC United

I started watching the game at minute 11, and barcelona has been domaniting completely since then. But that's football for ya, a lucky shot can turn things around.
Also, lol at bellamy's celebration.

Reina didnt make any saves apart from the one against saviola and the linesman had already raised his flag. Reina has had harder games.

The linesman and refereeing has been a little disappointing. Saviloa wasnt offside yet the flag wwas raised and Liverpool had an incident early on where they were offside yet the flag stayed down. No one scored from thse chances so the decisions didnt hae much effect. Aggers booking was very unfair. He hardly touched the barca player yet he got booked. I doubt the ref would have done it if the barca players didnt intimidate the ref. Puyol made a meal of Kuyt tackle. Kuyt went in hard, but I dont think he even touched puyol. Puyol made it look like he was shot by a sniper in the stands.

Liverpool began to fall apart once they let in the goal. The way things were going it looked like pool would be the first team to score. Its good to see pool get a goal; it'll make this game much more interesting. Now that Liverpool have got the away goal, Barca will start to attack more, so Liverpools best tactic is to defend well and then hit barca on the counter.

He's right, it was a shitty goal, from a neutral point of view. Doesn't take away from the fact that it is a very important away goal.

I don't think there's any such thing as a shitty goal from a neutral's point of view. Even something like this or when a ball goes in off someone's face is funny. I can't imagine an unentertaining goal.

It's a shitty goal to concede though, certainly, because it's so easy to stop. All you have to do is not stand in your goal.

Deco was unlucky not to score from that free kick. That would have been amazing.

Valencia just equalised to make it 2-2.

What a fantastic result. It's far from over, but Liverpool really couldn't have hoped for more.

Chelsea and Valencia will be happy too, I imagine.

Well done Liverpool fully deserved. Benitez is like superman in Europe. You need to get 2 head coaches get a good one of the league and you'll be sorted. Tactics worked a charm, let them have the ball but don't let their attackers play at all. Barca looked all over the place for most of the game.

My predictions are looking good except from inter - valencia which could go either way now tbh.

Good results for both Liverpool and Chelsea tonight.

I hope Sissoko is ok. He was an absolute monster in that midfield, he must be a complete bastard to play against. REALLY stupid freekick to give away outside the area at one point though, save those "tackles" for the centre circle.

great result for Liverpool, they can be really proud of that. Of course, they need to be focused for the return game - Barca can always score, and if they get one they can get another. I hope Liverpool keep their cool and don't get too cocky.

Valdes had a horrible game today. What the hell was he thinking when he picked up the backpass? He must have seen it come off the barca player, but even if he's unsure he should have cleared it anywhere.

Valencia did really well today. They got 2 away goals, both goals were really good. Villa's free kick was legendary.

I've been saying ever since the draw that we can take Barcelona, and I'm not usually a confident guy. Still though... wow. Can't ask for a better result. Ridiculously happy. And goals from Bellamy and Riise? Seriously, you couldn't make it up.

Of course, it's not over by a long way. Barcelona beat us 3-1 at Anfield on their last visit and a repeat of that would put them through. And Eto'o changes everything. He's an amazing player, arguably the best striker in the world.

One thing I have to say though... Valdes. Shocker. I have a lot of respect for Barcelona and their players, but Valdes is shite and always has been. The worst part about his mistake with the backpass was how much time he had. It's not like he was under pressure to make an immediate decision. He had time to kick it away!

(EDIT: Hit post too soon, sorry!)

Just caught up on the last couple pages of this thread. Arsenal have played two bad games in a row (hell, three if you count Wigan). Fatigue might be a factor, but I think it's a dangerous thing to keep talking about it, or the fixture schedule, or abolishing replays or whatever. You just have to suck it up and deal with it. I'm still pretty confident that Arsenal can go through, but they've gotta keep the net shielded or absolutely murder PSV. At least Gallas will have had a couple more games under his belt by then, so provided there are no more injuries he'll be paired up with Toure.

Of course, Liverpool shouldn't have played the Champion's League after their victory but the UEFA changed the rules just for them... Premier League clubs are rich.

:lol You mean the same Liverpool who's fans somehow got all of ****ing England booted out of Europe for five years? Please, spare me your tears.

That prick Wenger got his ass handed to him tonight. PSV will finish the job at the Emirates.

WTF...that prick? How dare you label the best manager on earth in such a disparaging fashion. Just for that, I hope we take you to the woodshed in two weeks.

Though merely scoring a goal would be nice...

"This will be a hard tie but, in truth, I don't think Barcelona are playing football at the same level as they were last season. I don't feel we have anything to be afraid of."

Anyone without blinkers on could see that...Barca hasn't shown me anything for any team to be scared of this season, and that includes some less than glowing home results. Conversely Benitez's tatics just seem to fit Europe better...not that I think he's a bad EPL manager, but he's certainly had a tough time againt his big four compatriots. So I'm honestly not surprised by the result at all.

beckham has been saying that he wants an england call-up. I feel sorry for him because he already deserves to be in the squad. Maybe he isnt required for the first team, but i cant stand seeing players like downing and richardson getting into the squand whilst Beckham isnt left out; that isnt fair on him at all. Backham is a victim of his own success; all the publicity he gets makes people think that he's a celebrity and not a football player, yet half the time bweckham looks like the hungriest player in the team. Beckham might not be as good as rooney or gerrard, but he works just as hard as both of them. I dont understand how he got ropped from the squad after the world cup. if it wasnt for him we wouldnt have done half as well. He got the cross that set up the own goal against paraguay, he set up crouch against T&T and he scored the only goal against equador.

Lille are a disgrace I'm astounded.

First of all the deliberate choice of a crappy stadium with horrible pitch over the Stade de France. Then they fail to open enough seats for the Utd fans and the police start attacking the fans who try to complain about it. Use of tear gas even affected Van der Sar for most of the first half!

Then you have the walking off incident. What a bunch of schoolboys. That riled up the fans in what was already a hostile atmosphere and there could have easily been riots afterwards. They made it into a dangerous situation.

and now they have come out calling Man Utd unsportsmanlike, criticised Ferguson and filed a complaint to UEFA about the referee - er hello! there are bigger issues here!

Hate those guys with their dirty play. Last season Giggs had his cheek fractured deliberately by that team and they foul you all game. Then they cry when someone outsmarts them. :lol read the rules you Lille idiots, as soon as the ref walks away the ball is live. the only time the attacking team waits is if they ask the ref to count out 10 yards.

Rooney had a great chance in the box but the defender literally wrestled him to the ground without any thought for the ball - interfering with his shot. That would be the Rooney penalty someone failed to spot *roll eyes*

You know, I never thought I'd ever say this...but I agree with you 1000% percent. And to get more specific, I don't know how anyone can have any issues with the disputed goals. Nothing disputed about 'em...Vidic was pushed, while Giggs had every right to shoot. That goal and the events that followed BTW made me laugh out loud.

Valencia's two goals were just superb, especially the free kick goal. Fun match to watch, and it sets up a doozy in the return leg.

It'll be interesting to see how serious John Terry's injury is. If he's out as long as he was with the back problems, then the FA might as well Fed Ex the Premiership trophy to Old Trafford.

It also turns out that Henry's been hurt for the past two weeks, as well. That explains his lack of zip at the moment. Something's wrong with his foot.

I agree that they just have to suck it up and deal with it. Hopefully the kids can put a good performance in this weekend against Chelsea and inspire the full squad.

Best manager on earth, surely you're joking, right?

What's the deal with Eboue btw, will he be able to play in two weeks time? He believe his vital to Arsenal defense, especially when Arsenal has the ball.

Defintely explains a lot...chances are he would've been rested had Persie been available.

BTW, Terry will be missing the Carling Cup final. Jose isn't sure how long he'll be out.

Best manager on earth is a very big claim, what about retail stores such as EB Games, they might have good managers.

But seriously, what Wenger did with Arsenal is absolutely amazing, he's built one of the best squads in Europe and continues to provide some of the most entertaining football. You can see football is his life.
