Lampard denies being punched by Adebayor
Chelsea midfielder says he was not assaulted, but FA calls on Wenger to explain his comments

Frank Lampard has confirmed that he was not punched by Emmanuel Adebayor in the brawl that erupted towards the end of last Sunday's Carling Cup final.

"I've spoken to Frank and he told me that he wasn't punched," the player's agent, Steve Kutner, told BBC Sport. The revelation came in the wake of last night's accusation by Arsène Wenger that one of the referee's assistants, who is alleged to have reported seeing Adebayor punch Lampard, was lying. Wenger also asked for the Chelsea midfielder to come forward and tell "the truth" about the clash.

"I don't agree with the report of the linesman because, for me, he lies," Wenger said after Arsenal's 1-0 FA Cup fifth round defeat at Blackburn Rovers last night. "Adebayor didn't punch anybody. So when the linesman says he punches someone, he lies. I would like you to ask Lampard if he was punched. And I want him to say the truth. If it is 'yes', we will accept it."

The Arsenal manager outburst had made him look a certainty to be hit by an FA disciplinary charge and today there was a call from Soho Square asking him to explain his comments. The FA also stated that the assistant referee's report does not claim Adebayor punched Lampard.

"Contrary to Wenger's allegations, the assistant referee's report does not claim that Adebayor punched Frank Lampard," said the spokesman. "The report states that Adebayor's attitude was aggressive, that he shoved into Ricardo Carvalho and that he aimed a punch at Lampard. It does not state that Adebayor struck Lampard.

"Questioning the integrity of a match official and accusing them of lying is a very serious claim to make as it questions the whole integrity of the game," said an FA spokesman. "We also reject any accusations of bias or dishonesty within our disciplinary system. We will be asking Arsène Wenger to explain these comments."

Referee Webb has also reviewed the whole of the incident again via video replays and from several different angles. The official has confirmed that, apart from the two sendings off and the subsequent charges issued, there were no other red card offences during the melee.

FA acts after Wenger 'liar' jibe

The Football Association has asked Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to explain his comments after accusing a linesman of lying after the Carling Cup final.

Wenger branded a linesman a "liar" after the official's role in the sending off of Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor in the 2-1 defeat by Chelsea.

Wenger said the assistant referee's report claimed Adebayor punched Frank Lampard, but the FA has denied this.

Lampard has since denied being punched during Sunday's fracas in Cardiff.

Interview: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenge

An FA spokesman said: "Questioning the integrity of a match official and accusing them of lying is a very serious claim to make as it questions the whole integrity of the game.

"We also reject any accusations of bias or dishonesty within our disciplinary system. We will be asking Arsene Wenger to explain these comments."

Wenger believed Adebayor was the victim of mistaken identity but his appeal against his dismissal was rejected by the FA.

"We don't agree with the statement of the linesman. I think it's a lie," said Wenger.

"I feel Adebayor didn't punch anybody so when the linesman says he punched somebody, he lies.

"He comes out now and says Adebayor punched Lampard. I'd like Lampard to come out and say Adebayor punched him."

But the FA says the assistant referee's report does not say Adebayor punched Lampard.

"The FA can clarify that contrary to Wenger's allegations, the assistant referee's report does not claim that Adebayor punched Frank Lampard.

"The report states that Adebayor's attitude was aggressive, that he shoved into Ricardo Carvalho and that he aimed a punch at Lampard. It does not state that Adebayor struck Lampard."

Adebayor's appeal against a three-match ban for his red card was rejected on Tuesday and he was unable to play against Blackburn.

And the striker also faces a separate charge of reacting aggressively and failing to leave the pitch after being sent off.

A hearing has been set for Tuesday 6 March.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea have already been charged with misconduct by the FA.

I'd be more than surprised to see Wenger not getting a hefty fine, and even more surprised if Adebayors ban was reduced. The FA is a joke.

So Eboue is on a 3 match ban. Lovely.

Warnock weighs in....

Warnock joins linesman row

Neil Warnock has entered the Arsene Wenger row about linesmen by claiming they have 'not told the truth' when the Sheffield United manager has appeared before the Football Association in the past.

Wenger has claimed a linesman lied by stating Emmanuel Adebayor punched Frank Lampard resulting in a red card for the Gunners striker in Sunday's Carling Cup final.

Although Arsenal's appeal for wrongful dismissal was rejected by the Football Association, Wenger is seemingly refusing to let the matter rest.

When asked if he accepted it was over with, the Frenchman replied: 'I don't accept that because I don't accept lies. What the linesman said is lies. It is just not acceptable.'

This would appear to be further evidence of a growing rift between referees and officials, with Warnock adding fuel to the fire with his own comments on linesmen.

'I don't think we've had a good relationship for years (with officials), even though we have meetings and such,' said Warnock.

'A lot of the problems are caused by linesmen, even though their job is difficult.

'When I used to officiate, running a line was more difficult than refereeing - to concentrate, be up with play and judge when a pass was made for the offside. But I do feel they try to get busy, to get involved, and they feel justified. Much like in the Carling Cup final.

'I didn't see the violent conduct from Adebayor, but you have to go along with it.

'I've been at hearings myself where linesman have not told the truth, when they've got together and done their statements. But that's human nature. They try and get enough evidence to make sure they hang you. Certainly sometimes they've not been forthcoming with the truth in some of my hearings over the years.'

:lol

Warnock is great support for us, he couldn't be any more influential and popular with the referees.

The Eboue thing was clear, I'm actually surprised that they didn't ban him for 4 or 5 games. I have no idea why they appealed, what he did was not too smart.

I think they appealed just to keep him active for the Blackburn game.

Injury news for Saturday. Sheesh - still pretty banged up.

Fabregas and Djourou set to return for Reading visit

Arsène Wenger will welcome back Cesc Fabregas and Johan Djourou for the visit of Reading on Saturday however the Arsenal manager is still suffering from a considerable injury headache.

Tomas Rosicky and Thierry Henry are both set to miss out at the weekend. More significantly, the Czech midfielder’s groin problem will keep him on the sidelines for the crucial Champions League tie with PSV on Wednesday. The French striker is also classed as “a doubt” for the game.

“Saturday looks to me very short for all of the injured players,” Wenger told Arsenal TV Online on Thursday afternoon. “The only one who could return is Johan Djourou (ankle). Cesc Fabregas will come back after he was rested at Blackburn but we lost Emmanuel Eboue [at Blackburn] with an ankle injury.”

The Ivorian right back will be missing for the next three domestic games anyway after his appeal against an FA charge was dismissed an hour or so after the Arsenal manager spoke at the Club’s training ground.

The bans picked up by Adebayor and Toure from the Carling Cup Final will also count on Saturday but not in the Champions League. That is a relief to Wenger given that his side trail PSV 1-0 from the Knockout Round first leg and he may be missing two of his most inventive players next Wednesday.

“Tomas will be out for the PSV game and Thierry is a doubt,” said Wenger. “We will try our best to get him fit but at the moment it is impossible to say. The suspended players will be back for this game so Adebayor and Toure will play. Maybe Abou Diaby will be back too.”

For the record the full list of absentees for Saturday’s game is: Adebayor, Eboue, Toure (all suspended), Henry (foot), Rosicky (groin), Diaby (ankle), Justin Hoyte (hamstring), Mathieu Flamini (foot) and Robin van Persie (foot).

Which of players won't be available against PSV next week (more specifically, will Rosicky be absent?)?

Just speculating here based on what I've heard:

Out: Rosicky, Diaby, Van Persie
Maybe: Henry, Flamini, Hoyte

That'd be nice for PSV, Arsenal not having Rosicky. He was the most dangerous midfielder in the first leg. Who'd be his replacement, Baptista? Or will he (or Aliadiere) play if Henry's not fit to start?

Anyway, PSV hasn't been in the winning mood either, we suffered the biggest defeat of the year yesterday away against NAC (3-0) for the KNVB Cup. Several PSV players didn't start though: Kromkamp, Cocu, Simons and Kone. Koeman thought it'd a good idea to bench those player to get some rest...:/

I assume they'd put Hleb and Ljungberg on the wings if Rosicky can't play.

Bellamy explained what happened in potugal. To sum it up, Bellamy wasnt happy with the ginger one because he didnt want to participate in the karaoke, so Bellamy hit riise with a golf club, as you do.

http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_1952957,00.html

Craig Bellamy has admitted he "lost it" with team-mate John Arne Riise during Liverpool's Portugal break when it was alleged he brandished a golf club at the Anfield defender.

Bellamy is reported to have been fined for the incident - a figure of £80,000 has been mentioned - and he has revealed he confronted Riise in the player's hotel room while Liverpool were on a sunshine break on the Algarve 10 days ago.

He told the Daily Mirror: "It started when we were all doing a bit of karaoke. I only sang one song and that was Red, Red Wine by UB40. That was because Jerzy Dudek was drinking it. That's how silly it all was.

"A lot of the lads wanted Riise to get up there next because he hadn't turned up at the dinner earlier and I tried to get him up, too.

"I wasn't that bothered whether he wanted to sing or not so I sat back down but he wasn't too happy about me trying to get him to sing so he let me know about it.

"The situation was calmed down then but when I was walking back to the hotel with Steve Finnan, who I was rooming with, I lost control for a few seconds.

"I went and confronted 'Ginger' and I said to him 'don't be doing that in front of the players again'.

"And that was really about it. I didn't want to cause a scene in front of everybody else. I just wanted to talk to him about it alone.

"John has been great about it. Straight away the next morning we were training together. There's no problem now."

The big game on tomorrow chaps...

Liverpool vs. Manchester United, predictions?

I'll post team news when it comes but Crouch will most likely be out, while I heard that Aurelio is back from an injury. As for Man Utd, Saha looks to start but Solskjaer is out for a month.

I don't know what the result will be. Liverpool's recent performances have been good and United's haven't (even though they've been winning). And Liverpool are strong at home, so on the face of it they'd be the team to back. But I'm sure the United players know how important this game could be, so it might be time for them to return to form.

Despite what some at Chelsea are saying, a Man Utd loss wouldn't be the end of their title chances. Even if they lost and Chelsea won their games in hand and Chelsea beat them in that remaning fixture between the two, United should still be ahead thanks to a goal difference that is highly unlikely to be overhauled (they're 17 ahead). And it's not like Chelsea themselves are without other games where they could drop points, they have Tottneham, Bolton and Arsenal still to come.

I would say if United win tomorrow, the title is basically theirs. If they draw, I'd say they're no nearer or further away from the title than they already were. And if they lose, it'd become a bit more tricky but I'd still have them as favourites.

Wenger stokes row with FA
Fri Mar 2, 2007 3:16PM GMT
By Timothy Collings

LONDON COLNEY (Reuters) - Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger fanned the flames of his dispute with the English FA on Friday by accusing them of running an "unfair and dishonest" disciplinary system.

He also refused to withdraw his assertion that a linesman had lied in saying that Togo striker Emmanel Adebayor had punched, or had intended to punch, Chelsea's Frank Lampard during the mass brawl that marred last Sunday's English League Cup final in Cardiff.

Wenger, facing possibly his third disrepute charge of the season after being called by the FA to explain his comments, was in angry mood and said he was prepared to confront the FA and tell them exactly how he felt.

"I am not going to change," he said. "I speak my own mind and I am honest and in this we have been treated very badly and without any respect. It is wrong.

"It is not true that Adebayor punched, or intended to punch, Lampard -- and we can prove it."

Lampard said on Thursday, according to his agent, that he had not been struck during the brawl last Sunday.

Wenger said he was prepared to bring in a professional television editor to show the entire incident frame by frame to prove Adebayor's innocence.

"I will show it to everyone, the press and the FA," he said.

The Frenchman added that he had no intention of apologising for calling the linesman a liar but conceded that his use of language may not have shown a full and subtle mastery of English.

"You can say what you want but what happened is that what he said was not true and we are being punished for something that we did not do.

"This costs the club a lot in players and results and it is wrong that the club has not been shown the proper respect."

He said Arsenal received a yellow card for every five fouls committed by their players while some other clubs received cautions only for every 12 fouls committed.

Asked about his use of the word 'liar' to describe the linesman, Wenger said his main intention was to say that the linesman's version of events was wrong and untrue. "It did not happen, that was not true," he said.

"I will defend the club in front of the FA, yes, of course I will," he said.

He said all the players who reacted during the fracas in the dying moments of Chelsea's 2-1 victory had been wrong to do so. "You should never react," he said.

"I apologised for that on Sunday but everything that has happened since is wrong and in this situation we have not been treated right. After 25 years in this game, I feel I should be able to speak like it is and to say what is right and wrong."

Good on Wenger for sticking to his guns...it's absolutely laughable that in a game that refuses to adopt video replay, that we get punished after the fact for things that didn't even show up in a video review, yet the other team gets away with doing stuff that showed up in the same video. **** the FA...at some point you've gotta put your feet down and stand your ground.

Hughes has chimed in now, claiming Wenger just wanted to deflect attention away from the FA Cup defeat.

I don't think other managers should really be talking about this. I mean, maybe you could make a case for Hughes, comments were made right after the Blackburn match, but even then I'd just say I didn't want to discuss the matter. I realise most of the time they're not just coming out and saying it, journalists are asking about it at general conferences before games, but it's not difficult to not comment.

Of course, I know full well why Stuart Pearce backed the FA, he's gagging to be England manager someday.

Speaking of video replays, for goals at least we might see something soon. Blatter, who's always been against it, has said it might be time to go with it. The mentioned technologies are Hawk-Eye, cameras in the goalmouth and a ball which senses when it passes the line.

The latter has been trialed for a while now and isn't reliable. It's a shame, because that would be perfect, it would just beep in the ref's ear when it went in and he'd signal a goal, absolutely no time delay.

I don't know much about the goalmouth cameras, but I don't much like the idea. Surely one smack with the ball could break them. And what if players are standing in the way, or the goal is shaking because the ball has hit the post? I don't like the idea.

I don't know how well known hawk-eye is, but it's widely used in cricket and tennis. Not for actual calls in cricket yet, just for TV coverage. Basically it has cameras set up in various places and computers track the ball in realtime, throwing up a digital recreation which can be moved to any angle to see what the call should be. Looks like this:

hawk-eyereplay237.jpg

and the camera then zooms up to an overhead view to see whether the ball touched the line or not.

It works remarkably quickly. Watching tennis, it come up within like 5 seconds. If they can get it accurate, it's perfect. Problem is, sometimes it makes decisions which everyone agrees are wrong. The technology will improve of course, but it might not be ready yet.

So that's the problem. The two technologies I like most aren't 100% reliable (though I'd argue they're still more reliable than refs/linesmen looking at it from poor angles).

Could just use cameras, but they're not likely to be anymore conclusive, have problems with views being blocked and will definitely take time to check. Maybe not much time, but 30 seconds or so.

And you can't just stop the game to check. You can if the ball's gone out, or there's been a foul, but that's all. You can't even stop to check if the goalkeeper has the ball in his grasp, you're denying him the chance to set his team off on a quick counter attack.

So if you have to wait until the ball goes dead to check. There are problems though. What if the other team scores before the ball goes dead, then they go back and check and the first question goal counted? Do they deny the second goal because the first went in and none of that play afterwards should have happened? You could say yes, but what if it's not a case of goal being scored before the ball goes dead? What if it's a case of violent conduct and a player getting sent off? Does that count even if the goal is given earlier? You can't just let the player off, but it's the same argument that denies the other team a later goal...that wouldn't have happened if the earliest goal had counted. So do you now have to allow red cards and other goals? Are both goals allowed?

There's lots to work out.

West Ham could be in troule because of the argentinian duo's signings. If you want to read all the details, its here, but its basically about Wast ham not owning the players registration, which is a breach of league regulations. For doing so, West Ham could have points taken off them and if thats the case then west ham are doomed for certain. West ham say tyheyhavce the paperwork to prove that there isnt anywthing wrong with the deal, but most people would be surprised if that is the case.

Hawk Eye is well respected in tennis, really brings down the nummer of wrong calls. I hope they introduce it in football soon.

This has been a Wenger flaw since the start and everyonebut arsenal fans know it (and some of them probably know it deep down) - Wenger is a bit of a prick.

Always whinging and moaning, his teams play great football but for the most part are the poorest behaved bunch of prats you'll see in the English game. They looked to try and improve after they got loads of abuse, but the latest incidents just reveal their true colours.

Ironic thing is they have long been the darlings of the Southern biased FA and the London press, especially with David Dein involved.

For the first time ever I hope Arsenal get perhaps a tad more then a slap on the wrist.

yeah, put him in the stands for half a year. 100k fine. Ban 5 players for the rest of the season.
But god forbid we changed some of the idiotic regulations and brought football into the 21st century.

today's our match against Berlin. I'm pretty excited about that because Schalke lost their match against hamburg just yesterday. And to be honest, I've got a quite good feeling!

Liverpool vs United starts in an hour and a half. I cant wait for the game. reagrdless what happens i think its going to be one of the best games we'll see this season. There is a lot at stake today. Its fair to say that If United win this game, then we've got one firm hand on the trophy. Im sure the players know just how important this game is, so the United players will give it all they've got to make sure that they can get that 12 point lead, and Liverpool will try to stop United from doing it. We wont win the title at anfield, but we will take opne big step towards it. if we today it would be our title to lose. The only way chelsea can win is if we shoot ourselves in the foot and drop points against the smaller teams.

We've been quite poor in our last few games, but I doubt we will play like we have done against fulham today, its just too important to have a poor game. This is the type of game where we need rooney to rise to the occasion and do something special. I reckon ronaldo will find it tough. He's getting used to the jeering from oppositions fans, but pool fans will take the booing one step further.

Im not sure what will happen. United have got more to play for than Liverpool, so its either going to be a draw or a United win. If we do win, I hope either rooney, ronaldo or neville score, preferrably neville. Pool pans have given him so much shit over the years.

I'm really looking forward to this game, COME ON YOU REDS! Team news should follow soon... and I think Liverpool have much to play for including pride and the fact we're fighting for a Champions League place (mainly 3rd). I think both teams will go at it and not settle for a draw, which is why I think it'll be one of the best matches this season too. Bore draws suck.

First half is over. Liverpool have been the better team. Riise's free-kick was ****ing close. he hit it so well even though the player that passed the ball to him did a bad pass. He got so much power on it whilst his body was positioned over the ball. Bellamy has done really well so far, he's walking all over vidic. Everytime Vidic has to defend against bellamy, he screws up because bellamy is just too quick for him.

man Utd have been ok. We've had a lot of possession but its been for small amounts of time. We've got the ball up the field and ojn the edge of liverpools box, but then we cant do anything with it. Ronaldo's had our best chance and that wasnt even very good; it went over. It looked like we could have scored near the end of the first half, but Carragher did some bloody good defending. He ackled ronaldo then ran across the box to tackle rooney. It was frustrating to see that happen, but its difficult not to admire the determination that carragher had.

As soon as we got that free kick I knew that we would score. I actually dont believe that we just one. Liverpool were all over us. Oh well I dont give a shit, we won!

:lol You lucky, lucky bastards United! Last four games, you've either been outplayed or been well below your best and no better than the other side, and have won all of them by one goal margins.

Really fun game I thought. That's been a good thing about the Premiership this year, the games between the top sides have been entertaining. In the last couple of years that generally hasn't been the case, but we're back to the sort of games we used to see.

God Liverpool need that top finisher *coughshouldhavegotOwenwhenyouhadthechancecough*. I don't care what it takes, I don't care if they have to spend 2/3 of their massive transfer budget to get the guy, they need Eto'o, Villa or Trezeguet (or someone else I'm forgetting). No point going after players like Iaquinta, he's decent, but you already have decent strikers.

I point and laugh at Chelsea fans, who are probably more crushed than the Liverpoolers at the moment. Shame Solid stopped posting here (in this topic, I see him post elsewhere)...coincidence that there are no Chelsea fans commenting this season? HMMMMMM.

Only downside for United is Scholes and Rooney. Rooney didn't look too bad, though who knows if he'll be back in time for Lille even with a minor injury, but Scholes getting himself banned for 3 games in the 85th minute when it wasn't even a dangerous position is just stupid. Happy to say he'll miss the Blackburn game, but I imagine United will just move Giggs into the centre with Park and Ronaldo on the wings. They have O'Shea and Fletcher too, shouldn't hurt them too much, but it might have if they hadn't grabbed that goal.

I dont think that rooney will be injured for that long, his knee will be bruised but I dont think its anything more serious than that. It will be a big problem if he is out for a long time because Larsson goes on march 12, which will leave us with saha. Scholes suspension is a concern too because we dont have much back-up in midfield and our next three games are middlesborough away in the fa cup, then blackburn and bolton in the league. We can cope without scholes for the borough game, vbut against blackburn and bolton we could really do with having scholes in the team.

We have been riding our luck for a while, but all league winning teams have this. When we won the treble, we scored so many late goals and had decisions go our way. the same goes with chelsea for the last 2 seasosn. they've scored plenty of late goals, deflected goals and they've had the beenfit of the doubt in most refereeing decisions. Its frustrating to see teams get that luck, especially when its undeserved, but its those lucky moments that make the difference between being champions and being a runner up.

I do sympathise with lakitu and the other lIveropool fans, but at the end of the day you've got to look at your teams failure for not taking their chances. Liverpool had more than enough opportunities to beat us by a big score, but you didnt convert any of them. Crouch's shot was the only shot that you couldnt have done better with, Van der sar did an unbelievable save. But every other chance Liverpool could have done better from. Gerrards chance easrly in the 2nd half is a perfect example of that. You would expect gerrard to bury that shot, yet he hit it wide.

Solskjaer is out for 4 weeks, so you really better hope Rooney isn't injured.

You wouldn't be left with just Saha though, Smith's not injured is he? Not ideal, but a hell of a lot better than having one striker.

which will leave us with saha and solskjaer

Isn't solskjear out for a while after a knee operation? That leaves just Rooney and Saha up front bu they have had Ronaldo pushed further forward a few times this year, so that's an option. Oh yeah Smith...

Holy crap! What a HUUUUUUGE goal by O'shea. That might be the title right there. Ronaldo and Giggs took the right decision on the FK, because if Giggs took it from that position, it would've probably ended up in nothing.

Oh yeah, Saha was clearly brought down by Agger. What a shitty ref, he was so close.

Yep Ole out until end of month, Larsson leaves after middlesbrough in the cup. Smith is fit again but needs games.

Shit i forgot about Ole being injured. If rooney is iunjured seriously, which looks unlikely, then we are screwed. Smith is available, but he really lacks match fitness and we are not in a position where we can play smith so that he regains his fitness. Maybe fergie is still trying to convince Larsson to stay. There is a lot at stake for us and he would be a really helpful addition. He's said that he's going to go, but having him could make a big difference.

"Rooney's injury is just a cut on his leg. How bad can it possibly be anyway?"

if you have ever pld football that was not "just a cut", looked really bad, very high tackle.

quote from skysports
"Rooney leaving the field with a badly gashed knee, courtesy of Carragher's high challenge."

looks bad, I see him missing the Lille Champions League match

You have the Dong guy too now he has a work permit. He did very well in Belgium, and I doubt Ferguson wanted to introduce him this season but if the situation is dire then he's an option.

Exactly what I thought. :lol Once again United get outplayed but pinch a win at the death. But this is what championship winning teams do, as psycho said. Hell, even the Invincibles of '04 had to scrape a few victories out to keep Man U behind us. Which is why Jose's bemoaning of United's luck was so ****ing rich. I'm sure he'll be bitching about it again later today.

I was rooting for a draw in that game myself...I want Man U to win the league, but I have a bit of a soft spot for Liverpool these days and figured they deserved at least a draw after getting clowned by Man U for years. That said it's the best result for the Gunners...now we've got a chance to grab third place with a couple games in hand.
