They could just be searching for more money.
I think you'll be fine, you have too much quality not to hang onto that Champions League spot. That West Ham game was a fluke, even though you did actually miss a lot of good chances, you also hit the woodwork twice and Green made a number of saves which, on any other day against any other goalkeeper, would have been goals. It's undeniable that you're missing your two best finishers, but you can't keep making as many chances as that without scoring.
Wenger's said he's happy with his squad and Arsenal fans seem happy with the way he does things too, but if next season you're 20 points off the lead again, something has to change. There are only so many seasons we can say youngsters just need to get more experience and new players need to get used to the league.
The more I see Arsenal, the more I think they actually have more problems than they'd care to admit. Some more crucial than others, but things which I think need sorting if they're going to challenge again.
I don't think finishing is as big a problem as people are making out. Take away the top two scorers from almost any side and they'll have a problem. I mean, you guys almost have as many goals as Chelsea as it is. Take away Drogba and Lampard and you take away over half of Chelsea's goals (obviously players taking their place would score, just not as much). That's not to say you couldn't improve on that, I just don't think it';s the main worry.
Anyway, here's what I think Arsenal need to sort out:
- New goalkeeper. Ok, Lehman might be staying another year, but he's off soon and you don't want to be stuck scrambling for a keeper when he goes. If a young enough, good enough keeper is available, snap him up. The last thing you want is to be like United between Schmeichel and Van der Sar.
- A tall, good centre back so Gallas can play at right back. This covers a few problems...strength in the air generally, strength in the air when both attacking and defending corners, and Eboue's defensive frailties. Eboue will be a fantastic reserve right back, and earlier in the season he looked like he'd make it for the first team, but recently I've not been convinced, I haven't even seen him bomb forwards as much as he used to and that's his strength.
- This is a minor one and maybe not necessary, but a left back. Clichy is good, better than Eboue, but I just don't see absolute top quality from him, not like I did when Cole played there. Now if every other player in the team is awesome then a good left back is good enough, but if there's someone world class available, it's a position which can be improved. I think the other big 3 teams all have better left backs, frankly.
- An experienced central midfield hardman. I think everyone here knows I don't rate Gilberto Silva all that highly, though I do think he's a good player. I just don't think he provides the cover that the Arsenal defence needs and he's certainly not a hardman, which Arsenal generally seem to lack, apart from mad Jens. You want someone who makes the crunching tackles, who the opposition are intimidated to go up against. Now I know there's Diaby and Denilson etc coming through and maybe one day they'll be two of the best players in that position in the world, but it's one of those positions where experience rules.
- A goalscoring winger. I've said finishing isn't too much of a problem, but it's rare nowadays to see a top side not having a midfielder who racks up the goals. United have Ronaldo, Chelsea have Lampard, Liverpool have Gerrard, Milan have Kaka, Barcelona have Ronaldinho, Lyon have Juninho etc etc. Now normally, I would just say a goalscoring midfielder, but you can't really do much to your central midfield in that way. You can't drop Fabregas, though he doesn't get many goals, and you can't play Fabregas as a defensive player so you need one of those alongside him. So really, there's no choice but the wings. It doesn't have to be a Lampard or Pires number of goals, about 8 league goals a season would be good enough to support the strikers, but someone needs to do it. Maybe Walcott will come on in his game and become that guy next year, maybe you'll have to buy. Ribery's probably the most heavily linked, but he's not really a goalscorer himself.
- An attacking central midfielder...sort of. For some reason Arsenal have a lot of defensive central midfielders, but Fabregas seems to carry the attacking threat alone from that area. Fran Merida might come through next year and that should be fine, but if not, buy the winger and move one of Rosiscky and Hleb over. These guys weren't wingers before they came to Arsenal, I don't understand what Wenger has against playing one of them in the middle when he thinks Fabregas needs a rest.
- A tall striker, a targetman. Basically, a player who doesn't really fit into Arsenal's style of play. the sort of player who can be thrown on with 20 minutes to go in matches like PSV, Blackburn, West Ham, when for some reason Arsenal's passing way just isn't working, and the ball can be swung into him, either to score himself or cause panic in the defence Crouch style so someone else is left free. Can score from those corners too.
So that's quite a lot of things. The buys would be a goalkeeper, tall centre back, possibly left back, hardman defensive midfielder, goalscoring winger, tall striker.
