Well he went to Liverpool for a contract considerably lower than what we offered him to stay, so clearly money isn't everything to him.

Of course, it may not even be his choice, if Villa outbid Blackburn by enough then we won't even get a look in.

Thought he went to Liverpool because that's who he supported as a kid?

And yes Ghost, I'm under the impression he was at Celtic when O'Neill was there.

On the subject of Sam Allardyce, it's clear he's taken Bolton as far as he can, unless they get some sort of massive investment. So he's off, and there's really only two clubs he can go to.

He's not going to manage a lower division club and could you imagine him abroad? I can't. If the Celtic or Rangers jobs were available I could see that happening, but Celtic will be happy with Strachan and Rangers have only just got Walter Smith this season. If the England job was available that'd make me wonder, but even with the current feelings of McClaren I doubt he'll be gone before the summer whatever happens.

So it can really only be a Premiership team. We can rule out all the teams doing well, and we can rule out all the teams with no more money or better attendances than Bolton. Already we're down to three sides, one of which is Middlesbrough. I don't think they've done well, but they've done ok. They've also played really well against the top sides occasionally. Given that Southgate is such a new manager I don't think there's any chance of him being fired, he'll be given the time to find his feet.

That leaves two...Newcastle and Man City. Both have high attendances, Newcastle ~50,000 and Man City ~40,000, on average. Both have more money than Bolton, though Newcastle more so.

Now I'm sure if it was his choice he'd be off to Newcastle. Better resources, better players, more fans...he'd be a fool to do anything else. However...I'm just not convnced Roeder is going, despite their poor season. I think he has the excuse of Owen and Ameobi amongst others being injured to fall back on, and he'll be given another year to sort things out. I don't think he should be, but I think he will be.

Which leaves Man City.

City would only make sense if they were infact taken over. Maybe it's a done deal and that's why he's going.

otherwise he'd be moving to a club with similar small resources, which would be difficult to understand.

Man City really shouldn't have similar resources to Bolton, they have almost twice the attendance. I think they're richer, just spent it really badly.

Unless Bolton's higher league positions are making up the difference, but Allardyce could do something about that, he can't drag in more fans.

He could always just be taking some time off of course.

they have massive debts though, I'm sure they have quite a bit of interest to pay back.

Is there a site that has the budgets of the premiership clubs?

Allardyce is the perfect man for Newcastle imo, he's the man to sort out what must be the chamber of horrors they call training facilities.

according to accountancy age (believe it or not, that site exists :lol ) they had a debt of 60 million at the end of last season.

I seem to remember that I heard something of around 50 million a few weeks ago during a game.

So it's getting smaller, but not too quickly.

See I can hear the Irish in his voice, when I hear it it's similar to my relatives who are also from dublin, but, most of the time there is this really odd accent going on and I can't work it out for the life of me. lol

But yeah, Dublin it is I guess. lol

He can't be Irish, he doesn't support United.

I keep forgetting to say, but my therapist supports Swindon Town. I'm quite impressed, given that she's only about my age (23) and Swindon have only ever once been in the top flight of football, currently residing in League 2. I mean, I guess some of you guys could look at me supporting Blackburn and feel the same way, but it seems to me like it'd be pretty crappy to support a team so far down the league.

That's the thing about women who follow football though, at least in my experience. They almost get into it in a way that a lot of guys don't nowadays. I know so many guys who have been to like 2 matches in their life but know as much about the game as any fan...they just talk as much about transfers as actual games and watch said games on TV only. Some of them don't even have shirts!

Every girl I know though, who's into football, goes to the games when she can. They don't seem to care so much about the politics of football or the latest transfer rumours...they just like going along to the games and supporting their team. So bringing it back to my therapist, she doesn't care that they're not in the Premiership, that they don't get the same media coverage or play with the same quality...they're her local team, so she supports them.

Even I didn't support my actual local team growing up. To be fair, they currently reside 2nd from bottom in the Northern Premier League First Division, which is pretty low in the league system, but I just went straight for the nearest decent side who might have some chance of being in the top division every so often.

I don't know what my point is...maybe that it's the women who are supporting teams in the more traditional way, while we younger men are more...modern in our views, if you know what I mean. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

I mean, I guess some of you guys could look at me supporting Blackburn and feel the same way, but it seems to me like it'd be pretty crappy to support a team so far down the league.

it's quite easy - once you have an attachment to a team, that is basically it.

To paraphrase Bob Paisley "it's like being in a marriage with no possibility of a divorce"

Man I;m very tired and more than a bit drubnk after today but I really don't care if I get banned for this:-

GRETNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

****.

I have no wrds to describe how gutted i am. Even the above is nowhere near.

Our game finished, we won 4-3 and then waited for 4 minutes thinking we were champions then in the final secodns we get it snatched away.

:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Poor Gollum.

Thank you.

Exactly. I'm still a Juve fan even though we were thrown down to Serie B.

Indeed - i know people who have been fans of Liverpool, Man Utd, and Chelsea - just switching when the going gets tough.

When Zoe Ball (i think it was her) on air said "i used to be a Liverpool fan, but now i've decided to support Man Utd" - i did, literally, retch.

My first game i ever went to see was at Carlisle, but i had a childhood affinity with Ipswich (from the age of about 8) so they were actually fairly good back then.

It's been very up and down as an Ipswich support (and i guess a closet Carlisle fan due to them being the only pro team in cumbria and the first team i ever actually saw live)

But yes - once you are locked into a team - that's it. Right to the end.

:lol So true.

I'll always support Newcastle Utd even though they're just a giant cluster**** atm.

Sunday Mirror says we're going to get Bellamy for £8m and £60,000 a week.

We're also fighting off competition from Inter and Bayern Munich for Celtic's goalie Artur Borac. Probably £5m for him.

Also been linked to some guy I've never heard of, Cameroon midfielder Achille Emana.

Oh how I love transfer rumours.

Of course, you can't switch teams when things go bad (unless you're my cousin, who went Liverpool, Newcastle, Arsenal), but I'm impressed that she chose her local team when they've never been a good side.

I mean Ipswich, Blackburn, Juventus...we're hardly small sides with little chance of seeing the top again when things go wrong...but Swindon...

Chelsea are being linked to Berbatov again...of course that happens every time Chelsea have a bad game or Berbatov has a good one and both those happened this weekend...but I wonder how much it would take to tempt them to sell. I think way over £20m, if not over £30m.

Chelsea can't offer a player up front in part exchange (unlike Man Utd with Saha), so they might just have to pay fully, but if they could persuade Robben to agree to the move than that could do it. Spurs are desperate for a left winger and have bid for Robben before.

Derby are losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace at half time. If they lose the match, Sunderland and Birmingham are promoted. If they draw the match, Birmingham are promoted and Sunderland might as well be, being 3 points ahead with one game left (against the bottom side in the division) and Derby needing to make up 9 goals somehow.

Why not support Swindon Town? I always say you should support your local side or at least the side you decide to support for your entire life. They may be in League 2, but that only means she wants them to be promoted. Are you guys saying if your teams got relegated to League 1 you would quit supporting them? The two teams I support are Bolton who haven't won a trophy since 1958 and Red Bull New York who were formerly known as the Metrostars, and they have never won a trophy in their history. However, that just makes me pay attention to them even more because I'm starving for a trophy. It's terrible to hear people change allegiances because their team is going through tough times because that's just sports in general. Teams do well and teams do poorly, and as a fan you're supposed to stick with them through thick and thin. If everybody was just a fan of success then why have any other teams besides Man Utd., Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool?

My closest team is MK Dons but I wont support them outright because of my disagreement with the whole "moving a club" thing. Might go see a few matches at the new Denbigh North stadium though, when it's finished being built that is!

You really haven't read what we've been saying properly at all. For a start we've all said we would stick with our team if relegated (and have, Blackburn, Ipswich and Juve have all been through that), so I don't know where you got that from.

Secondly, there's no reason not to support Swindon Town, I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is that I'm impressed that she's chosen to when most guys I know around the same age just picked a big Premiership club or, at best, the closest Premiership club.

I don't know how what I've been saying has gotten so confused, but I'll make it clearer. I'm not having a go at her or anyone who chooses to support their local team when they're so far down the league. I don't know if I could enjoy it, but obviously they do. I think it's great and dying out, particularly amongst guys. If I'm having a go at anyone, it's those who pick the big teams when there's a more local club needing their support.

I'm not even really having a go at them though, just noting that they're more commonplace nowadays and the local thing seems to belong to the past, unless you're lucky enough to live closest to a Premiership side.

Palace are now 2-0 up with 20 minutes to go, barring an impressive turnaround Birmingham and Sunderland can start preparing for next year in the Premiership.

Apparently Gatusso is going to be fit for the Man Utd clash, but Maldini almost certainly won't be. That's a blow for United, but less important than it would have been if they'd gone into the tie needing to score. As it is Milan getting a defensive player back is good for them, but scoring isn't as important as it might have been (not that I think United will just go there to defend or anything).

I think slightly more worryingly, Inzaghi should be fit to play. In the first leg it was basically if Kaka wasn't going to score for Milan, no one was, largely thanks to an invisible Gilardino. With Inzaghi though...he's a goalscorer, could really be a danger to the United defence.

BTW, any word on which United defenders will be back, if any? I expected Neville to be back by now, he was rumoured to be fit for the first Milan game, but I haven't heard anything on it. Are United going to have to play Richardson left back/Fletcher right back?

I wasn't really attacking anybody, it was more of a rhetorical question. Sorry if I caused any confusion. I was just saying that supporting Swindon Town may be enjoyable to her for reasons that those guys who pick the biggest clubs don't understand, and that basing your allegiance on success and only success is the wrong way to be a "fan".

the Dutch have quite the exciting league final on today.

3 teams that can be champion, at the moment it's PSV with 15 minutes to go. One goal by AZ and they are champion. 2 by Ajax and they are.

Would be great to have a final like that in the Premiership next year.

The thing is for most people who support their local team it's something that started for an early age - my dad to me to my first St Johnstone game when I was 3!

By the time that Saints had their really dark spell in the late 80's (at one point we were bottom of the Second division - the lowest possible in Scotland!), I had been supporting them for over 10 years; as DCharlie said once you support a team and you are a hardcore football nut, then it's well-nigh impossible to change even if you wanted to.

My other team is Real Madrid (my grandfather was at Hampden for the 7-3 European Cup final against Eintracht, and gave me all his memorabilia before he died - I've supported Madrid ever since, through bad times (getting beat by Aberdeen in the Cup Winners cup was a bad one!), and through good times as well.

However, some of my best memories as a Saints fan have been in the 'bad times' - yesterday was an experience I wouldn't care to repeat in a hurry, but it's one that me and my mates who were at the game will share and talk about 20 years from now.

QFT. Great Post.

Whilst success is great when and if it comes, it does not define what it is to 'support' a team, at least not to me.

I always go and see my hometown play when I'm there, I wouldn't call myself a real fan though. I started going there since I was 5 or so and then played for them until I was 15. I follow what's going on, but I have no real emotions attached for some reason.

They could get promoted to the second Austrian league this year btw, which would be quite an achievement for such a small town (around 5k).

not sure if he has enough to play for a top side.

Baptista is starting today btw

edit: full lineup:

* 01 Lehmann
* 27 Eboue
* 05 Toure
* 10 Gallas
* 22 Clichy
* 13 Hleb
* 04 Fabregas

* 02 Diaby
* 09 Julio Baptista
* 25 Adebayor

Do people here rate Darren Bent? What's the odds of big clubs snapping Darrent Bent if Charlton go down?
I think he's a great player. id love to see United get him. He plays a lot like saha, but he's younger so he can still improve. If he could get 20+ goals for charlton during his first season, he can do it for a big club.

Also I see Birmingham and Sunderland have gained automatic promotion.

Roy Keane has done amazing things at Sunderland. I think they'll do really well in the Premiership. They seem to have great team spirit.

As for the Blues... Can't wait for the Second City derbies :D

Baptista scores after 4 minutes. Oh Fulham has it all to do

BREAKING NEWS

Sam Allardyce has stepped down as Bolton manager.
Sam Allardyce has resigned as manager of Bolton Wanderers. said:
Allardyce leaves Bolton on the verge of qualification for the UEFA Cup, with Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside confirming in a statement that Allardyce has left the club amid rumours he could be appointed as Manchester City boss in the summer.

Gartside told the club’s official website www.bwfc.co.uk: “I have reluctantly accepted the resignation of Sam Allardyce after eight years of unprecedented success at the club.”

Allardyce has steered Bolton to within touching distance of UEFA Cup qualification despite a traumatic campaign.

Gartside added: “I would like to thank Sam for his enormous contribution to Bolton Wanderers, both as a player, but more importantly as a manager.

“Since joining the club as manager in October 1999, he has helped lead a fantastic transformation of this famous Lancashire club and has helped design and build an infrastructure that will enable the club to continue the progress that we have undoubtedly made in his period of office.

“He has given his reasons for wanting to leave the club at this time, which are private and we respect that privacy.

“I would like to wish Sam and his family every success in the future.”

I'd like to wish him the best of luck as he has turned this club from relegation strugglers to a club that consistently finished in the top half of the table.

God...I don't know how Arsenal can't go for Borac if 5 mill is the going rate. **** Lehmann's resigning.

Only thing I can think of (if that figure is accurate) is that Arsenal are gonna load up on defensive and midfield help. Or they're gonna spend a fortune to acquire Ribery, which would probably take up most of their transfer budget.

The Arsenal women have won the UEFA cup, in a thriller of a game.

I am considering watching paint dry to calm me down.

Look on the bright side...at least one of the Arsenal squads is winning things. Dominating in their case...their run of success the last few years is borderline stupid.

Typical Arsenal home game, wasting a ton of chances. At least they went into the half up a goal instead of down. They've gotta keep Fulham off the ball in the first ten minutes of the second half, or at least keep their quality chances down to a minimum, then look to kill them off on the counter.

PSV scored a 5-1 victory and are now sitting ahead of Ajax due goal differential. A 1 goal difference!

A lot of leagues are finishing crazy-style this year. Bundesliga is a 3-horse race, La Liga has 4 teams within a victory of grabbing 1st.
