What's worse is that Capello lead Real Madrid to the La Liga title exactly 10 years ago and got sacked after that, the guy doesn't learn.

I'd understand Benitez because he's supported Real Madrid for a long time, but even then your brain has to override your heart in Real Madrid's case.

It's hard to understand why you would want to go back. I don't think Benitez would go there any time soon, he's too smart for that.

By the way, Barcelona aren't perfect with their managers either from memory.

I wouldn't want to work at either club, the constant rumours and pressure don't allow for progressively good work over a long period of time.

THE MADNESS OF SPANISH FOOTBALL

THE SACKING of Fabio Capello after winning La Liga is another example of the madness that affects Spanish boardrooms.

La Liga clubs have long been controlled by trigger-happy presidents who react too quickly to even minor unrest.

Former England boss Terry Venables (right) left QPR for Barcelona in 1984 and within two years he had led the Catalan giants to their first title since the 1960s.

A year later he guided them to the European Cup Final - where they lost on penalties to Steaua Bucharest. He was sacked in September 1987.

Real Madrid won the Champions League in 1998 but German coach Jupp Heynckes was dismissed just weeks later.

Vicente del Bosque was fired in 2003 after winning La Liga and was replaced by Carlos Queiroz who lasted just 12 months.

It's crazy, England's no better with the lower teams but at least the top teams are more stable in that regard.... maybe not Chelsea, depending on what happens next season.

I would think that England has one of the best manager records in Europe, top and bottom

If you compare it to Germany and Spain it's for sure a lot better, I'm not really sure what it's like in Italy though.

some more news on the Martins situation, and Newcastle want Rozenahl and Geremi:
"All I can say from the club's point of view and mine is that it is only speculation because we have had no official contact from anybody at Arsenal at the moment," said Allardyce. "Everybody knows about the clause situation he has - that leaves us in a very poor position as a football club. We have got the player contracted, it does not mean we have got the player and we can decide if we want to sell him or not because there is a get-out clause in that contract.

"We are left in a very precarious position regarding that. All the speculation that is flying around is difficult to cope with, but it is something we will have to try to find out over the next few days. When Oba comes back, we will sit down and say, 'What exactly is the situation?' and if he has any problems, try to resolve them and hopefully persuade him Newcastle is the place for him next season."

Meanwhile, Allardyce, who hopes to seal his move for Paris St Germain defender David Rozehnal later today, has admitted his interest in Chelsea utility man Geremi. "Hopefully we can persuade [Geremi] - if we get the opportunity - to join this football club and not the others who will be chasing him as well as us," he added. "It is a long way from done, but there is an interest there and hopefully we can progress it over the next few days."

Is anyone else hearing more speculation about Barca and Cesc?

Maybe I shouldn't have even mentioned this, but I heard that Barca were going to try to lure him there this season with 15 million pounds. If that's true it's absurd. He has 7 years left on his contract.

But here we go with Barca again, whispering in our players' ears just to let them know "Hey, in a year or two, when you're really starting to look world class, we'll have a spot for you". I am starting to hate Barca.

we have to be careful not to become a farm team it seems. That's one of the bad things that come with having a young squad.

Fabregas will definitely go back to Spain at some point, all we can hope for is that this is a long way off still.

Losing henry was a blow, but the club can still cope without him. In some ways it can improve the team because the play isnt centred around him.

However, losing cesc this summer would be a disaster. He's the player that wenger is creating this new team around. Cesc wont leave this summer. Wenger wont sell both of his best players. The only way I see cesc leaving in the next few years is if wenger leaves.

I feel sorry for allardyce. When he first joined he had a very good upfront with owen and martins, but now it looks like he could lose both of them because he found out about clauses in their contracts, so that means that he's got a whole defence to sort out and now he might have to rebuild the strikeforce.

it's not a great situation for him, but I get the feeling that Owen won't be leaving.

Not because he doesn't want to, but because none of the top 4 are interested in buying him at the moment.

If he can hang on to Owen they still have quite a decent strike force with Viduka, Owen and Ameobi.

Their 13th in 10 years :S In which they won 4 championships, 3 Champions Leagues and 2 World Cups. Here's the list:

2006/2007 Capello
2005/2006 Luxemburgo, López Caro
2004/2005 Camacho, García Remón, Luxemburgo
2003/2004 Queiroz
2002/2003 Del Bosque
2001/2002 Del Bosque
2000/2001 Del Bosque
1999/2000 Toshack, Del Bosque
1998/1999 Camacho, Hiddink, Toshack
1997/1998 Heynckes

Spurs to confirm Bent deal - Report
Tottenham are on the verge of announcing they have signed striker Darren Bent from Charlton, according to reports on Thursday.

The BBC claims that Spurs and Charlton agreed a fee for the striker on Wednesday.

The England international rejected a move to West Ham two weeks ago despite the Hammers offering £17million for his services. According to media reports, the 23-year-old had set his heart on moving to White Hart Lane.

It is thought that Bent is willing to accept up to £20,000-a-week less in wages than was on offer to him at Upton Park to join Spurs.

Should his arrival at Tottenham be confirmed, it is bound to prompt speculation that Jermain Defoe - already third choice behind Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov - could leave the club.

Seems my cat was right again. Been 2 out of 2 so far, look for my Cat's foretelling in the future.

BTW... Liverpool's new stadium?

What?

Looks like a cigarette lighter. The nearest corner is the bit you press down, and the right hand corner gap is where the flame comes out.

I think Imageshack, avatars are still allowed wouldn't risk it though.

Looks like we're buying forwards, although they're ones we probably won't see for a couple of years at least. :(

If you exclude Liverpool and Tottenham, United have spent 3 million pounds less than all the other clubs combined!

Trezeguet reveals that he turned down United and Liverpool to stay at Juve, which is a bit unexpected because arsenal were the club that were linked to him.

Im a bit disappointed that we couldnt get him. He's got such a good goalscoring record with juve; I think its just as good at ruuds. He would have been a good addition to the squad.

Im surprised Liverpool wanted to sign him. I thought their policy this tranfer window was to buy players no one has ever heard of.

hadareud said:
yep, apparently the only candidate to replace him is now Schuster (like I already thought).
And Laudrup apparently.

It's ****ing ridiculous that history is repeating itself with Capello at Madrid, but they use the excuse that he doesn't make the team play the kind of football Real Madrid fans like.

What the hell kind of excuse is that? He may not be Wenger, but in the 2nd part of la Liga, despite all the shortcomings, Madrid became a very agressive and attacking team. With more time it could've only been better.

More Copa America tonight with:
Paraguay vs Colombia on at 6:35 ET
Argentina vs USA at 8:50 ET

There have been a lot of goals so far, 14 in the first 4 games, and the games have been pretty entertaining. Hopefully the US can withstand the Argentinian attack tonight at least for a little while. :D

:lol I agree with it though...Hill-Wood should really just shut the **** up.

hadareud said:
why would any manager want to join a club like Real? No matter what you do, you can only lose.

Which is why the suggestion of Wenger going to Real Madrid is ****ing laughable. Regardless of our budget limitations or his disagreement over Dein's removal, he's got far more power and control at Arsenal then virtually any top club on the planet could offer him. Whereas at Madrid, you're nothing but a puppet with a noose around your neck.

The Beckham excuse is pretty conveniant BTW...far as I recall the Madrid board were fully onside in support Capello on the Beckham benching, and if memory serves me well some of those guys were taking all sorts of shots at Becks after he signed the Galaxy deal. But when you're in power, you can get away with being full of shit.

Hopefully Colombia will make Paraguay's players eat their words, after they claimed Colombia was the weakest team in the group.

Naw, we probably won't see it until an hour before kickoff. Here's one guess, though:

-------------------------Keller------------------------
---------------Conrad-----------DeMerit--------------
Wynne----------------------------------------Bornstein
------------Feilhaber-----------Clark-----------------
Olsen----------------------------------------------Mapp
---------------Twellman--------Johnson-------------

Probably pretty close. There were pictures from training camp, and you can see some players were wearing the blue jersies (and thus would be projected as starters.)

an interesting article on Wenger's purchasing history and why he's bought so few English players

http://www.arsenalvision.co.uk/articles/28062007/wengerenglish.php

a little excerpt:
However, in recent times Wenger's transfer policy has been to sign mainly foreign players. Why, you ask? Wenger has always been priced out of the market for the top class England players. Wayne Rooney, a player who Wenger admired went for a reported £30 million pounds, whereas Wenger found the world class Van Persie for around £2.75 million pounds, less than a tenth of Rooney's cost! Other examples would include £30 million pounds for Rio Ferdinand compared to £150,000 pounds for Kolo Toure, or even £1 million pounds for the prodigious Cesc Fabregas whilst Michael Carrick went for £18.6 million pounds.

I know Man Utd have won the league last year and Arsenal were fourth, but I would think we got a lot better value for money, especially in the long run.

hadareud - I agree as long as Arsenal are capable of winning trophies with the side they put together. If not, they're just a team that makes good deals on the transfer market and never splashed enough cash to get over the hump. I also fear becoming a feeder club for the ones that do have money - buying all of these kids is good economics, but it's not good for team performance if a lot of them leave after becoming successful. Still, overall I'm happy that Arsenal do business the way they do, and obviously it's going to take a while for the current crop of youngsters to develop, so I'll be patient.

One more note - seems as if Arsenal are buying younger and younger these days - I don't think the previous generation (Vieira, Petit, Henry, Pires, Ljundberg etc...) were quite as young as Van Persie, Fabregas, Diaby, etc.... when Wenger picked them up.

Who's gonna get Tevez if not Inter? Interesting...

It wouldn't surprise me to see the other Milan come in for Tevez. They want a striker and they lost out on Suazo, so if they can't get other targets they might switch to him.

That's not a bad lineup now that I look at it. Clark wasn't that great in the final and Twellman and Johnson have problems finishing but I think the lineup is good enough to give Argentina a game. Also, I'd give Guzan the start over Keller. I really didn't like his last performance and while
